The unicorn’s co-founder Assaf Rappaport said that the firm’s funds will be kept in US accounts, citing uncertainty about independence of institutions in Israel.Zabezhinsky noted that trading volume data shows that foreign investors, or nonresidents, were very active in Israel’s foreign exchange market in February, which he described as having an “excess weight” in the depreciation of the shekel.“According to Bank of Israel foreign exchange trading data, the share of nonresidents in trading increased to 65% in February, compared with an average of 60% in 2022,” said Zabezhinsky. “There was a sharp increase in conversion transactions, particularly by foreign investors.”He noted that “foreign financial institutions sharply increased the number of conversion transactions in shekels,” while among Israeli investors, most of the conversion transactions were performed by non-banking bodies.Daily trading volume in dollar options in February was about 23% higher than the average volume in 2022, and about 35% higher than the turnover in the previous month, according to TASE data.“Trading was affected by the volatility of the dollar’s exchange rate relative to the shekel,” the TASE wrote in its monthly report.The shekel depreciated from NIS 3.475 at the end of January 2023 to about NIS 3.67 against the US dollar toward the end of February, the weakest level since March 2020.The TASE emphasized that shekel weakness relative to the dollar and the euro pushes the cost of imports up and contributes to price increases in the economy. This is also going to be a concern for the Bank of Israel, which is determined to bring inflation hovering above 5% back into its price stability target range of between 1% to 3%.“The Bank of Israel is responsible for maintaining its inflation target and for financial stability in the country,” said Zabezhinsky. “In case these are threatened the Bank of Israel will not sit idle on the sidelines.”The central bank intervenes in the foreign exchange market in order to stabilize the shekel against the basket of currencies when there is high volatility in the exchange rate in order to moderate and calm the market.In 2020, the Bank of Israel intervened in the foreign exchange market by purchasing US dollars in exchange for shekels, in order to moderate the negative impact of an appreciation of the shekel on inflation and economic activity.“The Bank of Israel has about $200 billion in foreign exchange reserves and can intervene in the market if necessary, although it will not want to do that, and instead we could see more verbal intervention,” said Zabezhinsky. “Therefore in our assessment, the rapid depreciation of the shekel will not continue for long.”

If a new industry research paper is correct, digital ID apps are going to boom.Juniper Research says the 2.3 billion digital identity apps being used globally this year will soar to more than 4.1 billion in four years. The impetus, according to the report, will be governments replacing physical documents with third-party applications.Those third-party players are financial service companies and banks, as they try to keep up with new KYC rules and the rise in identity theft.The only real threat to the dominance of ID apps will be digital wallets, primarily because that software combines identity and payment services.At the same time, the death-grip consumers and employers have on passwords might finally be releasing. Juniper researchers say that over the next four years the global market will being adopting in meaningful numbers a zero-trust model incorporating biometric verification and multi-factor authentication.That verification method is exploding, too.According to a Juniper blog post, verification is playing a major role in the digital ID market. Spending on related products and services, will rocket from $9 billion globally in 2021 to $16 billion in 2026.Digital identity vendors will watch their combined revenue grow from $26 billion in 2021 to $53 billion in 2026.Not a lot of that revenue, apparently, will be coming from the United States market, according to Juniper. Meanwhile, 96 percent of the country’s medical units are now accepting the national digital ID card for healthcare access and almost twelve million people have used it.Biometric passports begin journey-The new credentials will store encoded biometric information on the holder – fingerprint, iris and face – along with blood type and biographic details on the inbuilt chip which will enhance the state’s management of the entry/exit system as well allow the country to meet international integration requirements, reports the Saigon Giai Phong News (SGGP).The chip-based travel documents will allow more automation of border controls and help Vietnamese citizens at the borders of other countries.The blue booklet has a barcode on its back cover. Citizens will still have the choice to opt for a passport without the chip.
11.8 million people use chip-enabled ID cards for healthcare-Vietnam Social Security (VSS) has announced that nearly 11.8 million people have used their chip-based national ID cards to access healthcare services at 12,270 medical centers, 96 percent of the country’s facilities, reports Vietnam News.The population and insurance database reconciliation is progressing. As of 20 February, the data of 74.4 million citizens held in the National Database on Insurance has been cross-checked and verified with that held by the National Database on Population, according to the VSS.The VSS continues to update the National Database on Population with new records. It has shared 96.3 million records on social insurance and health insurance to the population register.The agency had issued 76.5 million citizen identification cards as of the end of December 2022 reports Vietnam News. The population is around 104 million.The Ministry of Health has been urging hospitals and health departments to promote the use of the cards for examinations and treatments covered by health insurance. As of early December 2022, 92 percent of health facilities were using the system. However, only 4.3 percent of medical examination and treatment visits were done via the cards.Children under the age of six could be receiving the ID cards soon following proposals from the Ministry for Public Security under the Draft Law on Citizenship Identity. Biometrics would not be required for the cards, which would not be compulsory. They could be issued alongside birth certificates.

The digital ID eco-system is rapidly expanding, with ID providers going through rigorous certification processes and global initiatives working out the parameters for the safe interoperability of digital IDs across borders. In some places, like Estonia and Singapore, access to government or private sector services is already happening through a single and joined up digital ID.There are, however, many organizations still playing a waiting game. These are the parties that will benefit the most from digital ID adoption, the ones that will come to accept it and for whom it will become a vital part of the way they operate. Our in-depth work with them, as well as governments and trade bodies across various sectors, keeps throwing up the same myths and questions around digital ID. This is stopping many from fully adopting it.“Data will not be as safe in a digital ID.”With fraud levels soaring to levels never seen before, is it any wonder that the safety of data has come into question? But this is one of the biggest myths around digital ID that we are coming across.The question we are being asked is, will the data be as safe in a digital ID as it is under existing methods? The answer is yes, if not improved. This is being is ensured by trust frameworks, through which all ID providers must undergo tough assessments to become certified to global security standards for data access and management. They will require data to be encrypted in transit and, where appropriate, at rest. Organizations that accept digital ID can be confident that the ID providers are proofing users properly and storing their data securely.Another key feature of digital ID is that data will be protected by robust authenticators, such as biometrics, which are inherently difficult to copy or reproduce.Moreover, in many countries digital ID works in a decentralized way, so users’ data is not kept in a central database. It’s distributed and kept in a protected format on the user’s own device or in a user specific space in the cloud. This makes it less vulnerable to attack. Even if a person loses their device, their digital ID is usually securely backed up in the cloud in a distributed way, so it can be easily recovered to a new device. However, it’s best for organizations to look for digital IDs that are not reliant on one device.However, a data breach can still happen, because of course, fraudsters will still look for ways in. The trust framework will require the provider of the breached digital ID, or specifically breached credential, to suspend or close the user’s ID. The ID provider will also be required to notify the real end user and all organizations impacted by the fraudulent use of the stolen ID. Additional ID proofing or authentication may be put in place when the user next uses their ID.Along with the concerns around increased levels of fraud naturally comes questions around the liability position. This will depend on the rules of the specific trust framework or contractual position between the ID provider and the accepting party. In general, if fraud takes place as a result of ID providers not following the trust framework rules, they may be held liable.The positive thing about a market full of certified digital ID providers to choose from is that competition will help ensure that they are always innovating and striving to provide the best service.“Data in a digital ID will be easier to exploit by organizations.”This is also a myth. Local data protection legislation, such as GDPR, will still apply and the use of digital IDs will have to strictly be within them. Ultimately, only the person who owns the data will be able to access and manage it. Only they can consent to its release to third parties and can ask for it to be deleted at any time.If a user updates the data, the new data will firstly be validated and verified, so that there is trust present when that data is shared. Where information cannot be validated, this will be highlighted with each attribute having a validated or un-validated status attached. If information is found to be incorrect, it can be raised with the ID provider who will liaise with the end user.Only the user can then choose which of the organizations that previously had access should receive an update. Organizations can subscribe to update services.“More people will struggle to access their services or be excluded entirely.”This myth is driven by concerns around whether digital ID will be available to everyone, or work everywhere. The last thing organizations want is to make existing access and inclusion challenges even worse.There has been a lot of progress to ensure that anyone who wants a digital ID can get one. Where individuals can’t establish a digital ID because they do not have digitally presentable evidence, such as a driver’s license or passport, or need assistance presenting it, initiatives are underway to make secondary options available to them. Our proposal for a Digital Vouch with Photo capability, for example, would enable users with no documentation to be included by a voucher acting on their behalf. Not everyone will want a digital ID, so there will still need to be alternative methods, such as direct proofing and account issue by service providers, as happens today, to access services. A good trust framework will ensure that.Digital ID is maturing, it’s time to get on board-The reality is that many of the perceived ‘problems’ either have or are being addressed. Digital ID is proving far more effective in enabling trust, which in today’s world has become so complex, than the IDs issued directly by organizations. When combined, they ensure authentication through biological characteristics that are much harder for fraudsters to steal, duplicate or manipulate. For example, iris, voice or fingerprint recognition tools can be used for anything requiring a confirmation of identity, from authorizing consumer payments to providing access to secured buildings.In general, biometric verification is more secure and reliable than traditional security techniques. Within a biometric payments system, different technologies work to measure various authentication factors, meaning the effectiveness of using one specific indicator over another varies for different circumstances. With that said, let’s further explore biometrics within payments.Are there weaknesses within biometric payment systems? Within biometric payment systems, there are three authentication factors to validate a user’s identity in a transaction. The first is ownership – something the user possesses (card). Next is knowledge, which is something the user knows (PIN number to their card). Finally, there’s inherence, or something the user inherently possesses (fingerprint, facial features).Firstly, the ownership factor can be compromised if the physical card is stolen. Fraudsters are skilled at phishing attacks, skimming, and camera manipulation to trick cardholders into surrendering sensitive information necessary to authorize purchases.However, inherence is more secure because the method of verification is physiological, making it much harder to copy someone’s physical features like a fingerprint than to replicate a plastic card or a password.Biometrics: an edge in payments security-There are a few biometric payment methods that are currently available to authenticate eCommerce purchases:1- Device fingerprinting, a tool that uses a scanner to image the user’s fingerprint digitally; the original image is destroyed, while a print mapping is saved. Facial recognition works like digital fingerprinting, with the technology mapping dozens of different points on the user’s face to create a unique impression of the individual rather than saving the user’s actual picture.Voice recognition compares the user’s voice pattern to a pre-recorded sample. Voice isn’t necessarily as distinct as a face shape or fingerprint, but it does have certain advantages like being cost-efficient and non-intrusive compared to other methods.Iris recognition, much like our unique fingerprints, uses the random pattern of the human iris to help identify different individuals. This technology is highly accurate at close range and can work with the cameras installed on most modern smartphones to map your eye, just like a fingerprint.Palm recognition. A palm vein scan uses infrared lighting to map the unique vein structures in your palm and converts the data points into encrypted code. Palm mapping is relatively new and hasn’t been widely adopted. However, this is likely to change with the recent development of IOS and Android applications.Why aren’t biometrics used more widely? It’s an obvious question but despite all the potential benefits of adopting biometric security, the technology still features several vulnerabilities and weak points. First, it cannot be relied upon for a fingerprint scanner or smartphone camera to be available at every transaction. While consumers can use biometric authorization on most mobile devices, desktops still make up a large portion of eCommerce sales.Additionally, companies will need to adopt hardware capable of reading and interpreting this data to accept biometric payments. The price of this hardware could be cost-prohibitive, depending on what is needed and how far a company wants to take contactless payments.Finally, we cannot forget the consumer factor. They are more anxious about their privacy and where personal data goes than ever before. Even if biometric scans do not actually save or store their biometric information, many consumers might still refuse to provide these identifiers.A broader strategy to fight fraud and chargebacks-Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how advanced biometrics technology is. Businesses will need more than one method to fight fraud and chargebacks. No single tool can be 100 percent effective, but a strategic mix of multiple tools can increase consumer protection and a business’s overall security. Other fraud tools to consider include CVV verification, AVS, 3DS technology, geolocation, and fraud blacklisting, just to name a few. Companies need a coordinated, carefully planned strategy to make the most of the authentication tools at their disposal.

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio — As Norfolk Southern's cleanup efforts continue at the site of its freight train derailment in East Palestine, a rail union leader says workers there have fallen ill.In a letter sent to government leaders including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, the head of the American Rail System Federation (ARSF) of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters pleaded for officials to "use your influence and power to stop NS's (Norfolk Southern) reckless business practices that endanger the public and their Workers."Specifically, Jonathon Long says many Norfolk Southern employees at the East Palestine derailment site are reporting that they are experiencing migraines and nausea. One worker told Long that he asked his supervisor to be transferred out of the derailment site because of his symptoms, but never heard back from his supervisor and was left at the job site. Long also says that workers cleaning up the wreckage in East Palestine were not provided with personal protective equipment, including respirators, eye protection, and protective clothing. "When some of the NS (Norfolk Southern) Workers inquired about the appropriateness of their personal protective equipment and the safety of their working conditions, they would receive little or no response from NS officials."The revelation of Long's letter comes as CNBC reports that leaders from 12 rail unions met with Buttigieg and Amit Bose, administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, in Washington, D.C., Wednesday to discuss the derailment, aftermath and needed safety improvements. UNITED NATIONS — Earthquakes, floods, storms — the world is not adequately prepared to face increasing disasters, a report published Tuesday said, calling for a rethink on global risk management.Since 1990, more than 10,700 disasters have affected over six billion people worldwide, according to data from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.In 2015, the international community adopted global goals to lower casualties and damage by the year 2030 by investing in risk evaluation and reduction, as well as disaster preparedness, in a declaration known as the “Sendai Framework.”However, it is “highly unlikely we will meet the Sendai Framework goals by 2030 given current trends,” said a report by the International Science Council, which includes dozens of scientific organizations.Floods and storms, which have been exacerbated by climate change, top the list of disasters and account for 42 percent of the total.The cascading disasters are “setting back hard-won development gains in many parts of the world,” the report said.“Far too little attention and investment is put to long-term planning and prevention, from strengthening building codes to adopting hazard alert systems,” said Peter Gluckman, president of the ISC.This lack of preparedness comes even as the international community is quick to mobilize after disasters like the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria, he added.Mami Mizutori, UN special representative for disaster risk reduction, said “the multiple challenges of the last three years have laid bare the fundamental need for greater global readiness for the next disaster.”“We need to reinforce our infrastructure, communities, and ecosystems now, rather than rebuild them in the aftermath,” she added.The report additionally drew attention to resource allocation issues. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has instructed PA security forces to confront Israeli troops and settlers if they enter Palestinian-controlled areas of the West Bank, a senior PA official said on Tuesday.“President Abbas instructed the security services to confront the occupation forces and settlers,” Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of the executive leadership of the Fatah party and the Palestine Liberation Organization told the Palestinian Satellite Channel. “We stress the importance of the national resistance,” he added.“If they enter our lands, don’t hesitate to confront them,” al-Ahmad said, apparently referring to Abbas’s instructions regarding Area A of the West Bank.“The best example is what is going on in Nablus [where battles between IDF soldiers and Palestinian gunmen have taken place in the northern West Bank city], and even in Huwara,” the site of a violent extremist settler riot, he said.“Not long ago, they [PA security forces] fought with them [Israeli soldiers] in Huwara,” he claimed, without giving details.The Israeli security establishment has long hailed coordination with PA forces as critical for combating terror and maintaining stability in the West Bank. Abbas recently cut ties following a deadly Israeli military raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank that killed nine Palestinians, including at least one civilian.At a summit in the Jordanian port city of Aqaba on Sunday, Israeli and Palestinian officials agreed to take steps to resume coordinationWhile the talks were ongoing, a deadly Palestinian terror attack near Nablus on Sunday killed two Israeli brothers. After that, settlers ran riot through Huwara and nearby towns, with the violence leaving one Palestinian dead and several others badly injured, as well as torching homes and cars, and killing sheep.The military has bolstered the West Bank with four additional infantry battalions following the attack and subsequent settler rioting in Huwara.Last Wednesday, 11 Palestinians were killed and more than 80 wounded in a gun battle when Israeli troops raided Nablus to arrest terror operatives. Palestinian terror groups said at least seven of those killed were their operatives. Another three were confirmed to have been civilians.Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have been high for the past year, with the IDF conducting near-nightly raids in the West Bank amid a series of deadly Palestinian terror attacks.There has also been a rise in settler violence toward Palestinians in recent months.Emanuel Fabian contributed to this report.
