Israel Defense Force troops operating in Gaza have been using Palestinian civilians as human shields, forcing them to enter tunnels and homes ahead of soldiers due to fears that the structures may be rigged with traps, the Haaretz daily reported on Tuesday.According to the report, which cited testimonies obtained from returning IDF soldiers who have regularly witnessed use of the tactic, troops have on multiple occasions scouted out Gazan civilians who they believe will be an asset to them while operating against Hamas in dense urban areas.In most, the “recruited” Palestinians are adult men, the report stated, although soldiers also recounted instances in which elderly men or teenagers were selected. The men are not terror suspects, but are detained specifically to be sent into buildings and tunnels that troops believe may be booby-trapped.“It is better that they explode and not the soldiers,” a soldier quoted in the report recalled being told by his commander, who he said had justified the practice.The Palestinian men are told that they’ll be released after completing one “mission,” another soldier recounted. He said that the Palestinians were kept with the troops for varying lengths of time, ranging from one or two days to a week.The newspaper alleged this practice has been widely employed across the Gaza Strip in recent months, and that senior IDF staff — including Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi —  were aware.The IDF knows “that it’s not a one-time incident of a young and stupid commander who decides to take someone of his own accord,” one of the soldiers said.Meanwhile, troops serving under commanders who decided to test out this method told Haaretz that they were not always aware of the true identities of these men.One of the soldiers recalled an incident in which a man he didn’t know joined their team, wearing an IDF uniform but with sneakers instead of combat boots, and without a protective vest.The soldiers were instructed to guard him at all times, the soldier said, and the reason for his presence wasn’t made clear to them until a day later, when they were required to enter a tunnel inside a combat zone. The Palestinian man was sent in ahead of them while the commander tracked his movements via the bodycam feed, according to the soldier.“We could hear deep breathing, it sounded like he was a bit scared,” a soldier who watched the footage said. “They simply sent him in and he mapped it out for the commanders, with the brigade commander watching on the outside.”One soldier said he was charged with guarding a 16-year-old Palestinian teenager ahead of the mission he’d been selected for.“You keep quiet and try to convince yourself, ‘ok, let’s go, let’s use them,'” the soldier said. “They tried to explain it in a rational way, but at the end of the day, you have a 16-year-old boy sitting inside the house handcuffed, with his eyes covered.”The soldier added that it wasn’t until the teen was released a few days later that he realized he hadn’t been a terror suspect at all.An unnamed source from within the IDF Southern Command attested to Haaretz that Southern Command chief Maj. In the 10 months that have followed, 109 hostages have been released, seven rescued by IDF troops and the bodies of 24 of them recovered by the military.Israeli authorities believe that 111 of those abducted on October 7 remain in the Strip, including the bodies of 39 that the IDF has confirmed are dead — both those killed during the initial onslaught and those since slain in captivity.

Pro-Palestinian college students may choose to stay home from class at the start of the upcoming fall semester as part of a national student strike organized by the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), which hopes to revive the anti-Israel protest movement that gained traction at schools around the United States during the last academic year.A report published Monday by The Free Press found that the YDSA — the youth and student wing of the far-left Democratic Socialists of America — published a new resolution last month in which it encouraged members of its more than 100 university chapters across the country to take part in a “Student Strike for Palestine” at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.The movement’s chapters were encouraged to “organize democratically-run campaigns demanding their school’s divestment from Israel, a ceasefire in Gaza, and free speech on campus,” the report stated, adding that it was not clear how long the strike could last.The planned strike is the latest in a series of actions taken by left-wing groups on American college campuses as they protest Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which began following the terror group’s shock October 7 onslaught in southern Israel.During the previous academic year, anti-Israel groups at universities set up tent encampments to protest the war in Gaza and demand that colleges divest from companies that do business in Israel or with Israelis.The protests were rife with accusations of antisemitism from Jewish students who reported feeling unsafe on campus, and in several instances, the demonstrations led to clashes, including at Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles, and other incidents of violence such as takeover of Columbia’s Hamilton Hall.The anti-Israel action was pervasive and continued throughout the summer months, including at Columbia’s Barnard College, where inverted red triangles — the symbol that the Hamas terror organization uses to identify targets — were spray-painted on buildings.The YDSA has since acknowledged that the campus protests were largely unsuccessful when it came to having their demands met, The Free Press reported, citing an article published by the YDSA, in which a member claimed that the encampments “did not win” despite being the “largest national student movement of our lifetime.”The YDSA publication asserted that unlike the tent encampments, a student strike would pressure the university into meeting the protesters’ demands as “no one can just turn around and plug their ears when the university can no longer call itself a university.”As part of its preparations, the YDSA pledged in its resolution that it would form a “Palestine Committee” to guide and oversee the management of the planned strike.The committee would be required to provide training to “define the nature of a student strike, explain why a student strike is strategic in terms of YDSA winning our demands, and help plan an escalatory campaign timeline for chapters,” according to the Free Press report.Among the schools that host chapters of the YDSA are Columbia University, UCLA and New York University, all of which found themselves at the center of scandals relating to the anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests last year.In July, NYU settled a lawsuit by Jewish students who accused the school of failing to stop antisemitism on campus, and said it had violated federal civil rights law by enforcing its anti-discrimination policies unevenly, including by allowing chants such as “Gas the Jews” and “Hitler was right” while ignoring other bigotry.The students also alleged that the NYU administrators including President Linda Mills had “ignored, slow-walked, or met with gaslighting” Jewish students’ complaints.Meanwhile at UCLA, a federal judge ordered the university to craft a plan to protect Jewish students following a lawsuit alleging that they experienced discrimination on campus.The scenes that played out at the California university became some of the most prominent of the tent protest movement, after counter-demonstrators attacked the encampment, injuring at least 15 protesters and causing the police to order the demonstration be disbanded. Dozens were then arrested after they tried to set up a new encampment.At Columbia, unrest has threatened to break out before the school year has even started. In June, the Manhattan District Attorney dropped charges against a majority of anti-Israel protesters who broke into and occupied Hamilton Hall in April, claiming insufficient evidence as the protesters had concealed their faces with masks and covered security cameras.Earlier in August, Columbia’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) announced that it would be back at the start of the academic year.“We recommit to continue strategic, targeted attacks on all aspects of university life. Hamas launched rockets toward Tel Aviv on Tuesday for the first time in months, as Israeli troops continued to operate in Gaza and Palestinian medics claimed at least 19 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes throughout the Strip.According to the Israel Defense Forces, the terror group fired two rockets toward central Israel on Tuesday afternoon, with one falling in the sea and the second failing to cross the border and falling short inside Gaza.No sirens were set off as neither rocket threatened any populated areas, though some residents reported hearing a loud boom from the underwater explosion.Hamas claimed responsibility for the rockets, its first attack on Tel Aviv since late May.The projectiles were launched from the Khan Younis area in Gaza, not far from where the 98th Division is operating.Hamas later released footage of the failed attack, which showed operatives using makeshift rocket launchers instead of the standard launch pits that the terror group would normally use for long-range rocket fire on Israel.The IDF has assessed that Hamas still possesses the capability to carry out attacks on central Israel or Jerusalem, but the terror group does not have many long-range rockets or launchers left to use.Several hours after the rocket attack, the military issued a new evacuation order for Palestinians in Khan Younis, with the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman publishing a list of the zones that need to be cleared.The announcement by Col. PORTO, Portugal — Since the Hamas onslaught of October 7, Nufar Bar, an Israeli immigration lawyer living in Porto, has seen a nonstop flow of requests from Israelis seeking refugee status.“We get them almost every day,” said Bar, who works with the Portuguese law firm Cotarelli e Rodrigues helping Israelis move abroad.Portugal offers many options for those seeking to immigrate, but Bar has found that many Israelis choose to apply as refugees through the asylum application process in Portugal as detailed by the UNHCR.For one 28-year-old Israeli woman who requested anonymity, applying for refugee status was the natural choice when the outbreak of the conflict caught her off guard.“I was on vacation in Europe when the war started, and I did not want to return to Israel,” she told The Times of Israel. “I was thinking of going to Berlin, but the visa application times were too long. My tourist visa was going to expire, so when a friend told me about this option, I didn’t hesitate for a single second.”Since October, however, she has had to renew her status with the Portuguese authorities every two months. “It’s a lot of paperwork, but it’s a pretty simple process,” she said.Lawyer Bar explained how straightforward the system is: “When you arrive in Portugal, you can declare that you want to apply for refugee status at the airport or later at an AIMA [Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum] office. You say you’re from Israel and want to apply for asylum. They give you a form to fill out and collect your biometric data.”Applicants are called for an interview within six to nine months, after which a decision is made about their application. In the meantime, they get support from the Portuguese authorities.“So basically they get immediate rights. Some of them can work immediately, bring their kids to school, have access to healthcare and if they need they can have food and accommodation from the government,” said Alex Bayer, another immigration lawyer at Cotarelli e Rodrigues.A temporary solution to permanent problems-No official information about the number of Israelis applying for asylum in Portugal can be found online and repeated requests for comment from the Portuguese authorities went unanswered. However, it is a topic of widespread discussion on Israeli blogs and Facebook groups.“If you do not have any other options like EU or Portuguese citizenship and your income in Israel has stopped and you were evacuated from your home and you need a solution, this is an option,” said Bar. “I’ve also seen young people who see it as an opportunity to try living in Europe.”Such is the case of another young Israeli, who at 27 years old, sees it as a chance to start a new life.“I had the impression that with the war, my future was compromised in Israel,” said the refugee seeker, who like the others interviewed for this story wished to remain anonymous.“I lost my job and I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “So when I saw this possibility, I took the opportunity and saw it as the start of a new life, as I had nothing to lose.”According to the hopeful emigre, most people discover the asylum option through word of mouth; several of her friends decided to follow suit after seeing her experience.Asked if she would encourage others to do the same, she replied, “If you have nothing to lose in Israel, of course, I recommend it 100 percent.”It’s unclear whether other European countries offer the same ease of entry — each one has its unique list of countries deemed dangerous to return to. The European Commission’s Department for Migration and Home Affairs said in an email only that “the EU remains a safe haven for many of those forced to leave their homes due to persecution, wars, conflicts or natural disasters,” adding that “member states… decide on asylum applications on the basis of an individual assessment.”Bar points out that as attractive as it may seem, asylum represents at best a temporary solution.“It’s not the ideal visa. Actually, it’s not really a visa — it’s an application for a visa and it has limitations. It has no future on its own. You need to change to another type of visa that has a permanent future if you want to stay,” said Bar, who discourages applicants from going this route, though she does help those who do choose it.“This is not what asylum is meant for. If you have other options, you should explore them,” she said.-Rise of the far right and antisemitic incidents-The results of Portugal’s parliamentary elections this past March could change the situation.
