But what changes for patients and health-care workers may not be clear-cut, as the lifting of mandates doesn't mean an end to masking altogether — and health officials stress that mandates could return to health care in the future, if COVID levels take a turn for the worse."Clearly masks are important in health-care settings, we've used them always, and I've been a big supporter of mask wearing when it's appropriate," Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. provincial health officer and chair of the council of chief medical officers of health, told CBC News. "Nobody is telling you not to wear a mask, what we're saying is it's no longer mandatory by a provincial health officer order that everybody do it all the time."Canadians can expect many areas of hospitals to still encourage masking in emergency rooms and departments with particularly vulnerable patients, like burn units and cancer wards — and health-care workers will still likely wear them in many patient-facing settings."If you want to or your provider wants to, masks will certainly be available. So I think it's going to be a gradual transition," Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan's chief medical health officer, told CBC Saskatchewan last week."We really hope outbreaks won't rise as a result of this policy … but it's something that I think all of us have a role to play in minimizing that risk."But reaction to the policy change has been mixed, with some health-care worker unions and advocates arguing the move will shift public health responsibilities onto individuals and could even equate to a violation of human rights for high-risk patients.A nurse readies a bag on a hospital stand for a patient.Lifting mandates could reduce health-care burnout Part of the reasoning behind the shift in policy is to remove the need for health-care workers, who have faced severe burnout throughout the pandemic, to constantly mask in every area of the hospital — while also still allowing them the freedom to continue to do so."We know that most of our staff, when they got infected, weren't getting infected at work, they were getting infected in the community," said Dr. Michael Gardam, an infectious disease specialist and CEO of Health P.E.I."And so really the time has kind of come and gone for this and we need to get to a new state where we are masking when we need to — but not routinely, everyday, everywhere."Provincial government defends decision to lift mask mandates at Sask. Health Authority facilities-Dr. Alon Vaisman, an infection control physician at Toronto's University Health Network (UHN) and assistant medical professor at the University of Toronto, said removing universal mask mandates in all health-care settings would likely help to ease health-care worker burnout."I absolutely see the reasoning there, because it seems like a very low-risk manoeuvre. I think it's important to recognize that if you take health-care workers, for example, they've been working extremely hard the last three years," he said."And if there's anything we can do to try to alleviate the stress, if you could remove masking where it's no longer necessary and where the risk is extremely low, I think if you could do that it's very helpful to reduce burnout."Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Baltimore, said hospitals should be able to independently set policies on masking depending on local COVID levels and expert advice."When you're talking about non-patient facing activities, I don't think that there's much benefit in having masks in place," he said."There is benefit in patient-facing activities to having people wear masks, but I think it's something that each hospital needs to make a determination on based on the local metrics and not really something for the government to necessarily be involved in."Alberta is still requiring masks in patient-facing settings, Quebec and Ontario are leaving masking rules up to individual hospitals, while Manitoba has opted to still require masks in health-care settings for the time being. "If you're in an immunocompromised-facing service, these policies make sense," said Dr. Abraar Karan, an infectious diseases fellow at Stanford University and physician and researcher in Stanford, Calif."Now whether we should keep mask mandates in place at all hospitals, for all patients, in all services, that's more debatable."Ethical debate over removing mask mandates in hospitals-B.C.'s Human Rights Commissioner Kasari Govender raised concerns about the decision to lift mandatory masking in health-care settings, saying they are the one space vulnerable people should be able to rely on to prioritize their safety — particularly in long-term care facilities. "The removal of mask mandates has a disproportionate impact on marginalized people, seniors, and those who are clinically extremely vulnerable," Govender said in a statement this week. "This represents a violation of their rights to equal participation in our communities." B.C. is ending its universal mask mandate in health care settings, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Thursday. Visitors to long-term care and assisted living facilities will also no longer need to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination.The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents over 200,000 health-care workers across the country, said in a statement to CBC News it's not acceptable for governments to allow employers to "download workplace safety onto front-line workers.""That ignores the fundamental responsibility of employers to provide a safe work environment," CUPE's National President Mark Hancock said. It's especially concerning in a health-care setting where people are already ill and at risk."Second Opinion-Why Canada avoided a severe winter COVID waveVaisman said the overall benefit derived from universal mask mandates in all health-care settings at this point in the pandemic isn't as strong as it once was."What we've seen throughout the pandemic is that the morbidity and mortality associated with COVID, the likelihood that you'll be admitted to hospital if you get COVID, has substantially fallen over the last few years," he said."Our primary objective is always to keep patients safe … but it's important to recognize that the risk to patients has dramatically changed over the last few years because of vaccination, because of previous infection, because of therapeutics."Vaisman said masking will remain in all traditionally high-risk areas in UHN hospitals, and patients entering emergency departments will still need to mask up — but fewer people will likely be wearing them in common spaces such as lobbies, hallways and elevators."So in certain settings where we think the risk is lower, you won't see health-care workers masked as often as you did in the past," he said. "I think the Canadian public will start to notice that masking is becoming less and less common in health-care settings."Second Opinion-Omicron completely changed the pandemic. Are we prepared for what's next? Henry said the changing COVID landscape has led to a decreased need for universal masking policies, much like the shift away from mask mandates in the public last year."We no longer need that additional level of protection all the time, because of what we're seeing with the epidemiology in the community and our health-care settings — we don't have any outbreaks in long term care right now of influenza or COVID [in B.C.]," she said. "So the setting is different and we need to adapt to that, we need to get back to a more normal way of interacting."Mask mandates could return if COVID levels worsen-Canada avoided a severe winter COVID-19 wave despite a lack of most of public health restrictions, a busy indoor holiday season and a rapidly mutating virus — largely thanks to high levels of hybrid immunity from vaccination and prior infection.A Canadian study of health-care workers in Quebec published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases in January found that two doses of an mRNA vaccine and a previous Omicron infection offered substantial protection against future infection from Omicron subvariants.Bivalent vaccines, which were designed to target the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants, were also associated with a lower risk of severe infection with several later members of the Omicron family, researchers wrote in new correspondence in the New England Journal of Medicine. "It's going to be really important when we get to next respiratory season, that we'll be looking again at whether universal masking through that period of time when the risk is high, not just for COVID, but for influenza, for RSV, for other respiratory viruses as well." Analysis-Masks could be here to stay in Canada — even as provinces ditch mandates-Gardam said that while it makes sense to lift mask mandates in hospitals for now, a worsening situation with COVID or other respiratory illnesses later could change that."If we have a large outbreak of influenza or RSV or COVID in the future as we get into the winter seasons, I think it'll be quite reasonable to bring back masking in hospitals in certain areas, then taking it away again when the epidemiology suggests that it's safe," he said. "There's no doubt masks had benefit during the pandemic, along with the other pandemic control measures that we had … we need to figure out what that middle ground is."

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department received an anonymous tip from a former member of the cult. He had received videotapes in the mail telling him by the time he watched the tapes, the group would have moved on.Retired Captain Don Crist was the department’s public information officer at the time. He remembers driving to the scene.“I’m approaching the area, I see a glow in the distant and I thought, that’s odd.” Odd because it would be dark, given there is a lot of distance between homes in the Ranch. “I come over the hill and every news truck in the world is already there,” That included crews from Germany and Japan in town to cover the Oscars in Hollywood.Thirty-nine people had committed mass suicide inside the mansion. Each had taken poison, each was dressed in a jogging suit, wearing black Nike running shoes, and covered with a purple shroud. A website described their belief: they would be transported in the back of a passing comet to a better place.Marshall Applewhite was the leader and can be seen on video saying, “They’re about to leave and they’re excited about leaving.” A member is seen on video saying, "I can hardly wait and I’m ready to go.”The fascination with Heaven’s Gate continues, 25 years after 39 people died by suicide inside a Rancho Santa Fe mansion. NBC 7's Rory Devine reports.“Yes, I knew… many of those people, most of them intimately and loved them dearly, had a lot of respect for them. I was sad for their families," said former member Amanda Johnson, who knew those who died.She said at the age of 19 she signed on for what she called "The Program," then called "The Classroom," for a journey of transformation. She left 17 years later, seven years before the suicides.“I left when they started talking about different ways of making the transition and different willingness, different levels of willingness to do whatever it takes to make the transition to the next level," she said.In all, 21 women and 18 men between the ages of 26 and 72 died."No way Gail would have taken her own life if she wasn’t in that state, brainwashed state,” said one family member in 1997.The deaths left behind grieving and incredulous family members, a stunned community, and captured the attention of the world, heightened when media were given unusual access to the video.“We felt, well, you could describe this all you want but actually pictures are worth a thousand words, and when people saw what they saw, they believed what we were telling them," Don Crist said.Generally reluctant to release evidence until after the investigation is done, the sheriff’s department made the controversial decision to release the video of the scene the day after the bodies were found, wanting to calm fears in the neighborhood that this was the work of a mass murderer.“Releasing the video in that big giant room in Crosby Hall, you could hear a pin drop," said Don Crist. “It was pretty amazing. I was watching it and it was dead silence and there were hundreds of people in there.”Johnson was hiking with friends the day she heard about the suicides.“I just started trembling and went back to my car, drove home, and turned on the news, and it was like ‘My God, they did it,'" she said.  Don Crist heard when he got a call from a reporter. “When she told me, I said, 'That just doesn’t seem possible,' I mean, it’s just one of those things you don’t believe when you first hear it, and then within seconds, my pager – that’s how old it is – my pager filled up," he said.Twenty-five years later, and still, nothing makes any more sense now than it did back then.The mansion is no longer there. It was demolished and even the street name was changed.

The Voice of Healing Church in Houston, Texas held an event last Monday in conjunction with Boneh Israel and the Israel Guys focusing on the recent efforts to reinstate the Biblical commandment of the Red Heifer.The event was broadcast and recorded. It was hosted by VOH’s Pastor Michael Petro. Rabbi Itzchak (Tzachi) Mamo, Mo Bareli, and Byron Stinson representing Boneh Israel. “The one thing we kept hearing, over and over, was that everyone felt so much love at the event,” Pastor Petro told Israel365 News. “Christians and Jews, we were all working towards the same vision with the same hopes which is remarkable since this event could never have taken place ten years ago. The Lord is pulling us together for a common purpose.”The pastor has always been strangely drawn to learning about the Biblical sacrifices and, in particular, the ritual of the Red Heifer. Pastor Petro emphasized that the ritual has special significance for Christians and is described in the New Testament  (Paul 13). “Paul connects the red heifer to the Messiah,” Pastor Petro said. “He describes Jesus as going outside of the camp and this is a reference to the Red Heifer which was sacrificed outside of the camp. God kept his promise and brought the Jews back to Israel so now, whether you are on the Jewish side or the Christian side, we are clearly in a period of getting ready. The heifers are an essential part of that. The coming together of Jews and Christians is part of that as well.”Moriel (Mo) Barelli, the representative from Boneh Israel, was inspired by the level of dual-faith cooperation manifested at the event.“The theme of the event was redemption and how the red heifers play a major role in that,” Mo told Israel365 News. “It amazed me that when it came to redemption and the Third Temple, we all had so much in common. The people we met were connected to Torah and felt strongly that they wanted to be a part of the prophetic things happening in Israel right now. Of course, Christians and Jews have significant differences but it was very easy to focus on the important things we have in common.”In September, Boneh Israel succeeded in bringing five red calves that were born in Texas to Israel with the intent of raising them to perform the commandment of the Red Heifer. The red heifers are now between 1 ½ and 2 years old. To replicate the ceremony mentioned in the Bible, they need to be at least two years old. “The heifers will, God willing, be ready by Pesach next year,” Mo said. “All of the elements necessary, the land and the kohanim, are being made ready in the meantime.” The flight to Israel and preparations cost over $250,000 dollars. Now that they are in Israel, the heifers will need to be raised until they are at least two years old. There are five heifers and the cost to feed them is $10 a day per cow. $50 feeds the entire group of cows for one day.Boneh Israel is currently building a Research and Educational Center in Ancient Shiloh where the heifers will be raised. Visitors will be able to see the Heifers, as well as experience and learn about the commandment of the Red Heifers. The site will also serve as a research center where a team of researchers and Rabbis will explore the possibilities to breed other pure Red Heifers. BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts Air National Guardsman accused in the leak of highly classified military documents appeared in court Friday as prosecutors unsealed charges and revealed how billing records and interviews with social media comrades helped pinpoint the suspect.Among the revelations: That the platform Discord provided information that helped lead the FBI to guardsman Jack Teixeira, and that Teixeira used his government computer to search for the word “leak” on the day last week when news media reports revealed that classified documents had been improperly disclosed.US President Joe Biden said the government was working to determine “the validity” of the leaked documents. In the meantime, he said in a White House statement, “I have directed our military and intelligence community to take steps to further secure and limit distribution of sensitive information, and our national security team is closely coordinating with our partners and allies.”Friday’s new details about the highest-profile intelligence leak in years shed light on how investigators came to zero in on Teixeira, 21, even though a motive for the disclosures remains publicly unexplained. By the end of 2023, European countries have promised to offer their citizens the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI), an application available at the tap of your mobile phone that promises to store and share identification data, grant access and sign documents, and much more. But experts are warning that the digital ID project will also face security challenges – from malware and vulnerabilities to hacking. At stake are millions of identities that will be used to access not only digital services but also digital travel credentials, driver’s licenses, university diplomas, and potentially personal information such as bank and medical records. While identity theft and data leaks could impact users, another consequence may be a loss of trust in service providers.A major risk in the current version of EUID is the liability derived from issuing and managing identities and ensuring they can be shared with third parties, says Guillaume Forget, executive vice president at Cryptomathic, a digital security solutions provider based in Denmark.“Currently, I see very few people that actually would be able to take this level of liability,” says Forget, adding that the liability is likely to fall on large government organizations. “If you are to manage the identity of potentially millions of end users, and this has been compromised, then it’s fairly easy for a small company to get out of business.”Forget explains that the EUDI Wallet has four stakeholder groups, the first one being the users, which are central to the solution. The second stakeholder is the source of trusted identities and trusted digital assets. And the third is the issuer of the European Digital Identity Wallet itself, or the operator of the ID Wallet scheme. The latter will rely on the framework that will be provided by the European Commission. The last group are relying parties, i.e. public and private companies that rely on the credentials or attestations that are being shared through the EUID Wallet to grant access to a product or service.“Many institutions are strong in managing backends serving millions of users, and they have certain procedures in place to mitigate risks,” says Forget. “But when you look at the audit framework around managing a large-scale scheme based on mobile apps, except maybe for the banking industry, I do not know of any other sector that issues apps with this level of sensitivity.”The threats surrounding the EUDI Wallet, a part of the eIDAS2 regulation aimed at offering a digital identity to all EU citizens, have been studied by offices such as the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA). Although the deadline is approaching, challenges still exist, including achieving full interoperability and setting technical standards. In a recent report, industry group DIGITALEUROPE highlighted issues such as fraud prevention, user accessibility, and implementation timeframes.“We are concerned that time and procedural pressure could result in immature products being pushed to the market without adequate time for testing and development through large-scale projects. This would hurt security and healthy competition for vital EU infrastructure,” the group states in the report.Forget notes, however, that if EUDI aims to be widely adopted and have high usage rates as the European government plans, it will need lessons learned from a live deployment of the technology. Companies that take too long to launch projects may find themselves overcome by large tech sectors.“If you look at successful schemes in the past, they didn’t start with millions of users from day one,” says Forget. “They started and grew and adapted and they built on functionality.” The EUDI wallet will have to work offline and store sensitive data like personal identity documents, cryptographic keys and other private information on a mobile platform exposing it to loss, hardware failures, malware, hackers and thieves. According to Cryptomathic’s white paper ‘EUDI: Implementing Best Practice Security for a High Risk Asset,’ the wallet will face broadly two types of attacks: The first are those against the mobile app itself, including reverse engineering tools, exploiting device memory, altering the user interface or creating similar apps to confuse the user. The other type targets APIs and communication channels. Such attacks will focus on the interfaces between the EUDI wallet and the participants in the wallet ecosystem primarily to expose personal data.Without mobile security, EUDI will not be able to stay ahead of the curve in terms of potential attacks, says Forget, whose company offers its own security solutions. Iran has reportedly been rallying militant groups in allied countries and regions to launch attacks against Israel, and coordinated recent Hamas rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip and from areas controlled by Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, earlier this month.According to a Friday report in The Wall Street Journal, Iranian General Esmail Ghaani, the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, held a series of covert meetings with militant groups in the Middle East in recent weeks, including some operating in Syria and Iraq, to discuss attacks on Israel on multiple fronts and with renewed determination, supported by Iran. The IRGC, including the Quds Force, is a US-designated terrorist organization.Last week, Ghaani was in Beirut to meet with senior leaders of Palestinian terror groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as well as Hezbollah, at the Iranian embassy in the Lebanese capital, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing “people familiar with the discussions.”Soon after, a barrage of 34 rockets was fired from southern Lebanon into northern Israel, with 25 intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system. A meteor exploded over northern Israel in an astronomical event that was heard all over the country on Saturday afternoon, at around 5:16 PM. The airburst was reported by the Israeli Astronomical Association. The IAA described it as a bolide, meaning an exceptionally bright meteor. The light is caused by the ionized atmosphere, heated up by the meteor’s impact.“Meteors are observed every night, but seeing one from an inhabited place, in daylight, and over Israel is very rare,” Igal Pat-El, a member of the International Astronomical Union, said about the event. “No debris has been found, and it is likely nothing survived the trip to the ground.” Dr. David Polishook, an asteroid expert at the Weizmann Institute of Science, told the Jerusalem Post that the meteor was likely one meter in diameter based on his own observations of images and video taken.“It’s larger than a common meteor, but smaller compared to the Chelyabinsk event,” Polishook told the Jerusalem Post.In fact, major meteor impacts are rare, but they have occurred with dramatic results in recent years. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Friday it was temporarily keeping in place federal rules for use of an abortion drug, while it takes time to more fully consider the issues raised in a court challenge.In an order signed by Justice Samuel Alito, the court put a five-day pause on the fast-moving case so the justices can decide whether lower court rulings restricting the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug, mifepristone, should be allowed to take effect in the short term.The justices are being asked at this point only to determine what parts of an April 7 ruling by US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Texas, as modified by an appellate ruling Wednesday, can be in force while the case continues. The order expires late Wednesday, suggesting the court will decide that issue by then.The court finds itself immersed in a new fight involving abortion less than a year after conservative justices reversed Roe v. Wade and allowed more than a dozen states to effectively ban abortion outright.US President Joe Biden’s administration and New York-based Danco Laboratories, the maker of the pill, asked the justices to intervene.White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement Friday evening that the administration continues “to stand by FDA’s evidence-based approval of mifepristone, and we will continue to support the FDA’s independent, expert authority to review, approve, and regulate a wide range of prescription drugs.”She added, “The stakes of this fight could not be higher in the face of ongoing attacks on women’s health, and we will continue to fight to restore the protections of Roe v.
