MIT researchers have developed an automated way to design customized hardware, or "brains," that speeds up a robot's operation.Contemporary robots can move quickly. "The motors are fast, and they're powerful," says Sabrina Neuman. Yet in complex situations, like interactions with people, robots often don't move quickly. "The hang up is what's going on in the robot's head," she adds.Perceiving stimuli and calculating a response takes a "boatload of computation," which limits reaction time, says Neuman, who recently graduated with a PhD from the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Neuman has found a way to fight this mismatch between a robot's "mind" and body. The method, called robomorphic computing, uses a robot's physical layout and intended applications to generate a customized computer chip that minimizes the robot's response time.The advance could fuel a variety of robotics applications, including, potentially, frontline medical care of contagious patients. "It would be fantastic if we could have robots that could help reduce risk for patients and hospital workers," says Neuman.Neuman will present the research at this April's International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems. MIT co-authors include graduate student Thomas Bourgeat and Srini Devadas, the Edwin Sibley Webster Professor of Electrical Engineering and Neuman's PhD advisor. Other co-authors include Brian Plancher, Thierry Tambe, and Vijay Janapa Reddi, all of Harvard University. Neuman is now a postdoctoral NSF Computing Innovation Fellow at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.There are three main steps in a robot's operation, according to Neuman. The first is perception, which includes gathering data using sensors or cameras. The second is mapping and localization: "Based on what they've seen, they have to construct a map of the world around them and then localize themselves within that map," says Neuman. The third step is motion planning and control - in other words, plotting a course of action.These steps can take time and an awful lot of computing power. "For robots to be deployed into the field and safely operate in dynamic environments around humans, they need to be able to think and react very quickly," says Plancher. "Current algorithms cannot be run on current CPU hardware fast enough."Neuman adds that researchers have been investigating better algorithms, but she thinks software improvements alone aren't the answer. "What's relatively new is the idea that you might also explore better hardware." That means moving beyond a standard-issue CPU processing chip that comprises a robot's brain - with the help of hardware acceleration.Hardware acceleration refers to the use of a specialized hardware unit to perform certain computing tasks more efficiently. A commonly used hardware accelerator is the graphics processing unit (GPU), a chip specialized for parallel processing. These devices are handy for graphics because their parallel structure allows them to simultaneously process thousands of pixels. "A GPU is not the best at everything, but it's the best at what it's built for," says Neuman. "You get higher performance for a particular application." Most robots are designed with an intended set of applications and could therefore benefit from hardware acceleration. That's why Neuman's team developed robomorphic computing.The system creates a customized hardware design to best serve a particular robot's computing needs. The user inputs the parameters of a robot, like its limb layout and how its various joints can move. Neuman's system translates these physical properties into mathematical matrices. These matrices are "sparse," meaning they contain many zero values that roughly correspond to movements that are impossible given a robot's particular anatomy. (Similarly, your arm's movements are limited because it can only bend at certain joints - it's not an infinitely pliable spaghetti noodle.)-The system then designs a hardware architecture specialized to run calculations only on the non-zero values in the matrices. The resulting chip design is therefore tailored to maximize efficiency for the robot's computing needs. And that customization paid off in testing.Hardware architecture designed using this method for a particular application outperformed off-the-shelf CPU and GPU units. While Neuman's team didn't fabricate a specialized chip from scratch, they programmed a customizable field-programmable gate array (FPGA) chip according to their system's suggestions. Despite operating at a slower clock rate, that chip performed eight times faster than the CPU and 86 times faster than the GPU."I was thrilled with those results," says Neuman. "Even though we were hamstrung by the lower clock speed, we made up for it by just being more efficient."Plancher sees widespread potential for robomorphic computing. "Ideally we can eventually fabricate a custom motion-planning chip for every robot, allowing them to quickly compute safe and efficient motions," he says. "I wouldn't be surprised if 20 years from now every robot had a handful of custom computer chips powering it, and this could be one of them." Neuman adds that robomorphic computing might allow robots to relieve humans of risk in a range of settings, such as caring for covid-19 patients or manipulating heavy objects."This work is exciting because it shows how specialized circuit designs can be used to accelerate a core component of robot control," says Robin Deits, a robotics engineer at Boston Dynamics who was not involved in the research. "Software performance is crucial for robotics because the real world never waits around for the robot to finish thinking." He adds that Neuman's advance could enable robots to think faster, "unlocking exciting behaviors that previously would be too computationally difficult."Neuman next plans to automate the entire system of robomorphic computing. Users will simply drag and drop their robot's parameters, and "out the other end comes the hardware description. I think that's the thing that'll push it over the edge and make it really useful."This research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Computing Research Agency, the CIFellows Project, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

The Convention obligates an occupying power to “import the necessary medical supplies, including medicaments, vaccines, and sera, when the resources of the occupied territory are inadequate.”Israel rejects claim that it occupies the West Bank, saying the territories it has ruled since 1967 are “disputed,” rather than occupied. It also notes that it has pulled out of Gaza. Archaeologists have determined that foundations found beneath an ancient mosque in Tiberias are from an even older mosque, making it one of the oldest such buildings available for excavation in the world, the Hebrew University said.The unusual manner in which the earlier structure was built enabled archaeologist Katia Cytryn-Silverman to determine that it was likely constructed during the seventh century CE.Cytryn-Silverman, of the Hebrew University, said it is the oldest mosque in the world that can be excavated. Other ancient mosques are either still being used or have had other mosques built on top of them, hindering research.It has been difficult to know exactly what the original buildings looked like, Cytryn-Silverman said in a press release from the universe.The discovery of such an old building offers a rare opportunity to examine the original foundations.Cytryn-Silverman estimated the mosque was 22 by 49 meters in size, with a courtyard, making it smaller than the slightly more recent mosque discovered on top of it, which is 78 by 90 meters and dates from a hundred years later, between 720 CE and 740 CE.A clue to when the older mosque was built came from earth used as filling in the foundation, which was brought in from elsewhere. By consulting with an archaeologist in Yemen, Cytryn-Silverman was further convinced that “the construction technology used at the ancient mosque, a simple and pragmatic style uncharacteristic of the region, apparently first came to Israel at the start of the Arab conquest in the seventh century.”She said the technology itself may have originated in the Arabian Peninsula.Cytryn-Silverman presented her findings earlier this month at a joint Hebrew University and Ben-Zvi Institute conference to mark 2,000 years since the founding of Tiberias. It is known as the The Al-Juma (Friday) Mosque, getting its name from the Friday sermons that would have been delivered at the mosque when it was in use.Only the lower foundations of the older building remain and it took years of study before the full significance of the site was understood, with archaeologists able to determine the years the mosque was active from coins and pottery shards found at the site.The presence of remains at the location, in the south of Tiberias near the bottom of Mount Berenice, has been known since 1952, though scholars initially thought they were from a Byzantine marketplace.Cytryn-Silverman began excavating the site in 2009 ago and was able to determine that a structure at the center of the site was in fact a mosque from the 8th century. Further study determined that below the mosque were the remains of the older mosque.Following the Arab conquests of the region in the 7th century, Tiberias became the capital of Jund al-Urdun, the Jordanian military district, making it a political and economic center.The site is close to the remains of a Byzantine church that was in use from the fifth to the 10th centuries, and which archaeologists say was the largest in the Galilee. They believe a large synagogue may have stood alongside it.“This was an area that was multi-religious and a very moving symbol of regional coexistence,” Cytryn-Silverman said in the statement. “It is important to remember, tt the time that these monumental structures stood in the center of the city, the time when they were active is considered the city’s peak period. It was the time of famous and impressive Jewish activity here…including the writing of the Aleppo Codex in the first half of the 10th century.”Work at the mosque site is to restart in the near future, in a collaborative dig between the Hebrew University and the German Protestant Institute of Archaeology on the Mount of Olives.The previous oldest mosque to be excavated was in Wasit, Iraq, and built in 703 CE, Cytryn-Silverman said, but the mosque in Tiberias is decades older.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the official spokesman for Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas, on Wednesday condemned the Israeli government's decision to build more than 2,500 new housing units in "occupied Palestinian lands."Abbas’ spokesman stressed that the Israeli decision, which is contrary to international legitimacy, including UN Security Council Resolution 2334, calls for a firm international stance and a shift from condemnation to effective pressure on the Israeli government to stop challenging international law and the decisions of international institutions."The continuation of settlement policy and the theft of Palestinian land by the Netanyahu government and the support and biased position of the [outgoing] US administration will not lead to security and stability," Abu Rudeineh said."The Palestinian people are capable of opposing this occupation policy and they will not allow their land to be stolen and exploited as part of the Israeli election campaign for Netanyahu or any other element," he stated.

Moses_breaking_the_Tablets-Spiritual Leap-Lofty teachings cannot be revealed to those who are unsuitable or not ready for them. The enlightenment itself risks becoming debased and twisted when it is associated with sordid individuals. There are, however, exceptional cases, when the current spiritual-moral level of the receiver may be disregarded, and a spiritual ‘leap’ may be accomplished.God’s revelation to the Israelite slaves in Egypt will forever stand out as an example of such a miraculous “leap.” This is the inner significance of the Passover offering, the korban Pesach, which literally means to “leap” or “skip.” The Jewish people in Egypt had sunken to the lowest levels of degradation and idolatry. In the words of the Midrash, they were on the 49th gate of tum'ah - just one before the lowest state of impurity. For God to be revealed to them during their redemption from Egyptian bondage required a spiritual jump of historic dimensions.Nonetheless, even the leap of Passover has its limitations.“This is the law of the Passover offering: no foreigner may eat of it.” (Exodus 12:43)-Who is a “foreigner” who may not partake of the korban Pesach? The Sages taught that this refers not only to Gentiles, but even to Jewish apostates who have abandoned God. These are Jews have forsaken the Torah’s principles to such an extent that they now fall under the category of “foreigners” (Zevachim 22b).In other words, even the spiritual leap of the Passover redemption was not boundless in its scope. It could not encompass those Jews who had so completely assimilated into their surrounding idolatrous culture that they lacked even an elementary faith in God.Rescuing the Light of the First Luchot-This understanding of God’s revelation during the redemption from Egypt sheds light on another historic event.Moses’ act of breaking the luchot habrit (the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments) took tremendous courage. How did Moses dare destroy such a uniquely holy object? How did he know that this was the correct thing to do?The Talmud suggests that Moses’ act was based on the above-quoted law of the Passover offering. “The Passover offering is just one of the 613 mitzvot, and yet an apostate may not share in it,” he reasoned. “Certainly the Jewish people, after they have sinned by worshiping idols, are unworthy of the Torah in its entirety!” (Shabbat 87a)-In light of our previous comments, Moses’ a priori reasoning becomes even more forceful. What is the inner message of the Passover offering? That God revealed Himself to the Jewish people, despite their spiritual poverty. Nonetheless, even this mitzvah cannot encompass those who reject the fundamental tenets of monotheism. Certainly the Torah as a whole could not be bestowed to the Jewish people in their idolatrous state after worshipping the Golden Calf.Had Moses in fact given the first set of luchot to the Jewish people, this would have bound the Torah to the state of spiritual impoverishment that enveloped the Jewish people at that time. This would have brought a terrible spiritual danger - to the world, to Israel, and to the Torah itself. Only by hiding that great light, by breaking the physical vessel that bound it to the material world, was Moses able to ensure the spiritual development of the Jewish people and the entire world.The first luchot, however, were not lost forever. Moses’ act rescued that lofty light, so that it may be revealed at the end of days with a pure and eternal illumination.(Adapted from Ein Eyah vol. Israel’s cabinet approved its side of the deal, waiving visas for Emirati citizens, in late November. The UAE launched tourist visas for Israeli citizens last month as a stopgap measure until it ratified the exemption agreement.Israeli travelers continue to use the tourist visas in the meantime.Health officials have long complained that lax treatment of UAE arrivals was contributing to new infections, but politicians reportedly feared angering Emirati officials by applying new restrictions so soon after the two countries normalized their ties.In addition to the two Gulf states and Morocco, Israel has recently also reached normalization agreements with Sudan.Na’eh served as envoy to Turkey from 2016 to 2018, until he was expelled by Ankara in protest of the deaths of dozens of Palestinians in violent clashes with Israeli forces on the border with the Gaza Strip.Israel and Turkey have not exchanged ambassadors since the falling-out in May 2018.

As green-fingered Israelis prepare for the new gardening season, marked by the festival of Tu Bishvat which begins on Wednesday, the Environmental Protection Ministry has for the first time published a map and list of commercial nurseries (in Hebrew) infected by the little fire ant.Listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as one of the 100 invasive alien species that most threatens the environment and biodiversity, the orange-red ant, with its painful, burning sting, spreads mainly between plants, plant pots and soil.The ministry on Sunday called on the public to isolate newly purchased plants for several hours in a carton, with a bait in the corner, such as peanut butter, to draw any potential insects out. If the insects are found, people should inform the local authority’s hotline as well as the ministry’s pest control unit, return the infected plant to the nursery and seek guidance on prevention methods.First identified in Israel in the Jordan River Valley at the end of 2005, the fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata), which is native to South America, measures one millimeter (0.03 inches) in size, although the queen ant can grow to 2 millimeters.
