This advancement turns traditionally brittle semiconductors like silicon and germanium into flexible fibers, with applications in flexible electronics through photoelectric fiber pn junctions.The flexible and stable "hair" sensors can be used independently or woven into fabric, transforming passive clothing into functional "smart" wear. These fibers have broad application prospects in future intelligent wearables, the metaverse, artificial intelligence, extreme environment sensors, brain-computer interfaces, and other fields.One-dimensional fibers, as a new form of inorganic semiconductor materials, offer advantages of fineness and softness. To enhance high-tech development within the EU and increase industry self-sufficiency, the EU's OBELIX project aims to design innovative technologies based on new concepts. Over the next four years, the European Innovation Council (EIC) will fund OBELIX through its Pathfinder program with approximately EUR 3.9 million. "We are collaborating with renowned institutions in France and Sweden as well as with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) on the development of economical, environmentally friendly microelectronic technologies. This field will be central to our research in the coming years," stated Professor Mathias Klaui of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU).New Technologies for Sustainable Microelectronics-The OBELIX project, an acronym for "Orbital Engineering for Innovative Electronics," will be coordinated by the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and run until 2028. The project's main aim is to develop new technologies that are sustainable and resilient to supply chain interruptions, while also reducing the ecological footprint of the microelectronics sector. "We intend to create particularly efficient magnetic switching, for instance in memory devices by exploiting the new options offered by orbital angular momentum, the motion of particles through space," added Mathias Klaui. Current techniques use the intrinsic angular momentum of particles, known as their spin. The new technique aims to increase efficiency tenfold by reducing energy consumption by a factor of ten or enabling switching at a rate ten times higher at the same energy use. "Secondly, we'll be focusing on systems that require fewer rarer materials," continued Klaui. This involves reducing reliance on rare earth elements, which are scarce and primarily sourced from China or Russia. JTA — A New Jersey district recalled its yearbooks after a photo of a Jewish student group was mysteriously swapped out for a Muslim student group.A suburban Chicago high school launched an investigation after its yearbook went to print with a quote from a student who said the October 7 Hamas atrocities made her “happy.”A Texas school tightened its policy on reviewing student publications after its yearbook published a page titled “Times of Palestine.”And Jewish groups in California and Minnesota have taken local districts to task for how their own yearbooks have described the events of the Israel-Hamas war.This year, US high school yearbooks — which typically are produced by students working with a staff adviser — were tasked with summarizing a tumultuous year, in which the long shadow of the Israel-Hamas war fell over political activism and caused some Jewish students to experience antisemitism in their schools. Some of the yearbooks, their critics say, embodied the year’s themes perhaps too well.“It made everybody assume from the beginning that this is antisemitism,” Brad Cohen, the Jewish mayor of East Brunswick, New Jersey, told the local news this week after the high school yearbook was distributed with a photo of the “Jewish Student Association” replaced with one of a Muslim student group. The names of the Jewish students were also removed.The photo swap went viral after New Jersey rabbi David Schlusselberg shared it on Instagram. “The Jewish parents at the high school are outraged, as they should be,” Schlusselberg wrote. “This is beyond unacceptable, and the staff members who oversee the yearbook should be punished.”Cohen called the photo swap a “blatant antisemitic” act and suggested it could amount to a hate crime. The local Jewish federation described the incident in a statement Tuesday as “seemingly deliberate and malicious alterations of photos and names of Jewish students.” No one in the district has yet taken responsibility for the photo swap.Muslim parents said their students were being targeted despite saying they had nothing to do with the incident. Just be aware and educate yourself.”Outraged Jewish parents, who also objected to the yearbook’s description of Hamas as a “militant” rather than a “terrorist” group, packed a school board meeting demanding an explanation. The board condemned the comments and, as in East Brunswick, launched an investigation; some parents reportedly demanded further consequences, though a local rabbi also cautioned against attacking the student and said the school should have better educated and protected her.An attorney for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights group, said at the meeting that the student had been “mischaracterized” and added, “The family affirms that she was not happy about any act that a certain terrorist group did.”Elsewhere, schools apologized after versions of the contentious phrase “From the river to the sea,” which pro-Palestinian groups say is a nonviolent call for liberation but which many Jews consider to be a call for Israel’s destruction, popped up in their yearbooks. Holding out an ancient and surprisingly heavy silver coin, New York-based philanthropist and antiquities collector George S. Blumenthal explained that it was a shekel piece from 68 CE, the third year of the Jewish Revolt against Rome, inscribed with the words “Jerusalem the Holy” on one side and “Shekel of Israel” on the other.“It’s material culture. You put it in someone’s hand and they feel the connection,” Blumenthal said, before nonchalantly slipping the 2,000-year-old shekel back into his satchel.This connection, provided by a physical object attesting to the ancient Jewish presence in Israel, has been a central theme of Blumenthal’s philanthropic efforts.Often working in concert with Israeli photographer and imaging technology expert Ardon Bar-Hama, Blumenthal, through what he called a series of “serendipitous” encounters over the last 20 years, ended up funding the groundbreaking high-resolution digitization of the Dead Sea Scrolls and also of the Aleppo Codex, one of the oldest surviving Torah scrolls, dating from the early 10th century CE, among other projects.He has also worked closely with The City of David, financing a series of animated films about the history of Jerusalem, and is currently partnering with the Central Zionist Archives to digitize the original diaries of Theodor Herzl. Blumenthal: Archaeologists and professors, they go very deep. Professors tell me that to get a PhD today, you have to drill down to one object and write a thesis about it. But it’s not a broad view. All that we’ve done is collect the work of these prominent, important people, all the things that they have found.Is this project in direct response to October 7?No, it was happening before. But October 7 made it suddenly more relevant.We in the United States do not feel your pain [in Israel]. We are empathetic, but every Israeli knows someone who was affected. What’s happening in the US is that we have a new pain of antisemitism. It’s always been there, below the surface. Look, I was called “Christ killer” when I was a kid. We were the only Jewish family in my neighborhood of Parma, Ohio. And I always felt there was antisemitism. But now… what’s happening on campus?I live in New York, near Columbia. I live in Trump Tower. There were marches outside. I took my tennis racket and I started yelling “rapist” at these people. I did it three times, but the police shooed me away.We, the Jewish community in the United States, are just galvanizing. When such a tragedy happens… both in Israel and on campus, no one was sitting there prepared for this. We have to galvanize. I believe we can do this through archaeology and history.We are talking about biblical archaeology, about proving the historicity of the Bible. Many people have their own ideas about the truth of the Bible, one way or another. It’s historical, but it’s also mythology, it’s also legends. I hope it’s an issue of facts, not ideas. With ideas, you have an opinion and I have an opinion. When you can provide a fact that goes against an opinion, then you can assert something. I believe we are in a position to assert our relationship with the land, where we are obviously indigenous. I am not going to accept the BS from the Palestinians saying otherwise. There is a big story, in the United States, that they are the indigenous people.But this site documents our presence. Let’s say, Ahab [one of the kings of ancient Israel]. A lot of people in the United States know the name Ahab. There is proof of Ahab! Who is defining it? The Assyrians. [King] Shalmaneser tells us that Ahab came up against him with 10,000 soldiers and 2,000 chariots.In the Tel Dan stele, we are defined by Aram, which is Syria. It was found over 30 years ago. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken harshly criticized Hamas’s response to Israel’s hostage deal proposal on Wednesday, saying it included some changes that were impractical and suggesting the terror group will be responsible for prolonging the war if it sticks to its current positions.“Hamas has proposed numerous changes to the proposal that was on the table… Some of the changes are workable, some are not,” Blinken said in what was the first US reaction to Hamas’s response submitted a day earlier.Speaking at a press conference with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Doha, Blinken reiterated that the Israeli proposal Hamas received on May 30 was “virtually identical” to the terror group’s own last offer submitted on May 6.“Hamas could have answered with a single word: ‘Yes.’ Instead, Hamas waited nearly two weeks and then proposed more changes — a number of which go beyond positions that had previously taken and accepted,” Blinken said.“As a result, the war — [which] Hamas started on October 7 with its barbaric attack on Israel… will go on,” the top US diplomat said.He did not explicitly characterize the Hamas paper as a rejection, as Israel did on Tuesday evening, and said the mediators were still committed to bridging the gaps, even though the terror group’s position had complicated matters.“We’re determined to try to bridge the gaps, and I believe those gaps are bridgeable. He just came back a fragile and different person.”While Hamas has denied mistreating the hostages, the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday cataloged the repeated physical and psychological abuse the hostages suffered during the eight months in Gaza, citing the abductees’ relatives as well as Israeli security and medical officials.According to the Journal, Jan, Ziv and Kozlov were held in a single dark room for six months and had no contact with the outside world except for their interactions with their captors.Punishments for failure to comply with their captors’ strict orders included being locked in the bathroom and being buried under blankets in the intense heat, the Journal said. Since the October 7 attack, Hamas's leaders have been managing the war from Doha, Qatar, and conveying their messages mostly via the Qatar-owned Al-Jazeera TV channel. The network has been operating as a propaganda outlet in the service of Hamas 24/7, with hardly any coverage of other topics. It expresses unreserved support for Hamas, justifying the deadly attack, showing footage from it obtained from the terrorists' bodycams, and celebrating it as a victory that has brought pride and honor to the Islamic nation.[1] It therefore comes as no surprise that it was in the home of Al-Jazeera journalist Abdullah Al-Jamal, in Nuseirat in the Gaza Strip, that three Israeli hostages were held captive. Some Al-Jazeera journalists have recently been "outed" as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters. A Palestinian journalist working for Al-Jazeera, Muhammad Wishah, appears to have also been a commander in the military wing of Hamas, according to documents on a laptop found by the Israeli army in a Hamas base in northern Gaza. Wishah, from Al-Buriej in the central Gaza Strip, has featured in Al-Jazeera broadcasts in recent months, with the station identifying him as one of their journalists. According to Israeli military sources, however, Wishah is a prominent commander in Hamas's anti-tank missile unit, who in late 2022 began working in R&D for the terror group's air unit. The dramatic and audacious operation conducted on Saturday to rescue four Israeli hostages from the clutches of Hamas was lauded and celebrated across Israel, providing a rare moment of hope and good news for the country following eight months of grinding war and often depressing military campaign.However, the operation was also roundly condemned by numerous international parties due to the high number of Palestinian casualties.UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed “condemnation” for what he claimed were the deaths of “hundreds of Palestinian civilians,” and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell described the events as “a bloodbath.”Unverified claims by Hamas put the death toll at 274, though they did not distinguish between civilians and combatants. The IDF said it was aware of “under 100” Palestinian casualties, but provided no source for the estimate or breakdown between civilian and combatant deaths.Numerous Palestinian eyewitnesses told media outlets they saw many dead bodies scattered around the Nuseirat area and described hundreds of people hurt with missing limbs and other severe injuries.A local man by the name of Abdel Salam Darwish told the BBC he was in a market buying vegetables when he heard fighter jets and the sound of gunfire.“Afterwards, people’s bodies were in pieces, scattered in the streets, and blood stained the walls,” the BBC quoted him as saying.The rescue mission-The four hostages, Noa Argamani, 26, Almog Meir Jan, 22, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 41, were being held captive in two residential apartment buildings in the densely populated Nuseirat refugee camp.The operation was carried out during the day by the Israel Police’s elite Yamam counter-terrorism unit, together with the IDF and the Shin Bet intelligence agency. One eyewitness, who was interviewed by an Arabic outlet and then broadcasted by Kan News, said “there was fire at a crazy rate; airplanes began attacking from the sky from all fronts.”Proportionality and precaution-In light of the circumstances of the operation and the deadly consequences it wrought, can the IDF be said to have complied with the laws of armed conflict?Several legal scholars and human rights experts have raised concerns over the legality of the mission.Kenneth Roth, the former director of Human Right’s Watch and longtime, ardent critic of Israel, said that since the operation was deliberately conducted during the day, it increased the anticipated harm to civilians.“The problem with operating during the day is civilians are all about, and some of the bombs clearly fell either on or adjacent to a market in Nuseirat which was filled with people,” he told Al Jazeera.“In those circumstances you predictably will get larger numbers of civilian casualties then if it would have been a nighttime operation. That is inconsistent with the duty to take all feasible precautions to spare civilian harm.”Customary International Humanitarian Law as set out by the International Committee of the Red Cross stipulates that “all feasible precautions” must be taken to avoid or minimize civilian casualties when conducting military operations.Roth, however, noted that Hamas opened fire on the rescue forces and it was not known how many of the Palestinian casualties were civilians and combatants.On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the UN human rights office also called into question the legality of the operation on the basis of the same principles mentioned by Roth.“The manner in which the raid was conducted in such a densely populated area seriously calls into question whether the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution — as set out under the laws of war — were respected by the Israeli forces,” said Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.“All these actions, by both parties, may amount to war crimes,” he added.The ‘military advantage’ of rescuing the hostages-Dr. Tammy Caner, a researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University, said that the key principle at play in evaluating the legality of military operations is that of proportionality.Additional Protocol I of the Geneva Convention states that an attack which may be expected to cause civilian casualties and damage “which would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated” is illegal.In other words, if a military commander anticipates that the number of civilian casualties or injuries from an operation targeting a lawful military target would be disproportionate to the military advantage to be gained from the attack, that attack would be illegal.But the equation of what might be considered “excessive” civilian casualties can vary, depending on the value of the target.“Rescuing the hostages did not just constitute a significant ‘military advantage’ but [the operation] achieved one of the war’s overarching goals — the release of the four hostages,” argued Caner.“So, while there may have been significant collateral damage to civilians, it was not considered excessive under these circumstances.”She also said that the assessment of an attack’s legality does not depend on an assessment of the actual civilian harm that occurred after the attack, but rather on “harm that is reasonably foreseeable — that is, expected to result from the attack in the ordinary course of events.”Caner noted that the hostages were placed by Hamas in civilian apartment buildings amid a densely populated civilian neighborhood, and that the IDF extraction forces came under heavy fire, reportedly including from heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.Emanuel Gross, an emeritus professor from Haifa University’s Faculty of Law and an expert on international law relating to combatting terrorism, argued that Israel had a clear legal obligation toward the hostages, as its citizens, to do everything possible to rescue them ”either by negotiation or by force.”Once the operation was underway, Israel had a right to defend both the rescue force and the hostages from the oncoming assault by the Hamas combatants.
“If they use force against you it is clear you have to react to their fire to protect the hostages and the soldiers extracting them, even if you will hit many civilians in so doing. You can’t escape these consequences,” said Gross.Yuval Kaplinsky, a former head of the State Attorney’s Office’s International Law Department, said that since the hostages were Israeli civilians who were unlawfully abducted from the sovereign territory of their country by an illegal terrorist organization, there might be greater leeway under the laws of armed conflict for civilian casualties during an operation to rescue them.“The situation of a hostage is different from that of a regular civilian. You’re trying to stop a very dramatic war crime against civilians [when conducting a rescue operation],” said Kaplinsky.“Because the operation was to save the civilian hostages, you could say that there is more room for maneuver than when just attacking [an ordinary] military target, in terms of proportionality.”Kaplinsky added that there had never been a case brought to any international court or legal tribunal prosecuting a hostage rescue mission, and that these kind of circumstances were unprecedented and therefore difficult to evaluate.In a similar vein, Gross opined that the laws of armed conflict, largely drawn up in the first half of the twentieth century, and even earlier, were not formulated considering the sort of war Israel is currently facing.“The kind of war we are conducting is not the classic war that international humanitarian law was created to address,” said Gross.“International law was not designed to address the manner in which Hamas conducts war, or to provide answers to these wars.“Such laws were created for wars between two nations, not a nation against a terror group. The international community should try to adopt different and new laws to respond correctly to the new phenomenon that we are facing now, which is states facing non-state actors like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.”

Hezbollah launched some 215 rockets and several more missiles and drones at northern Israel on Wednesday, in what it said was a response to the killing of a senior commander in the terror group by an Israeli airstrike a night earlier.The barrages marked the largest attack carried out by Hezbollah during ongoing fighting on the Lebanon border amid the war in the Gaza Strip.And the terror group vowed to ramp up its attacks in retaliation for Israel’s elimination of top commander Taleb Abdullah. At a funeral procession in Beirut, senior Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine said the group would increase the intensity, force and quantity of its operations against Israel.“If the enemy is screaming and moaning about what happened to it in northern Palestine, let him prepare himself to cry and wail,” Safieddine said.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a security assessment Wednesday evening “in light of the developments in the north,” his office said.The successive Hezbollah attacks began on Wednesday morning with a barrage of at least 90 rockets fired at several areas in northern Israel, including Tiberias — for the first time amid the war — Safed and Rosh Pina, sending tens of thousands of people to shelters, as Jewish Israelis celebrated the Shavuot holiday.The Israel Defense Forces said another 70 rockets were then launched at the Mount Meron area, home to a sensitive air traffic control base. The incident was under investigation.Police said they were looking into reports that the soldier, along with other off-duty troops, were involved in a violent incident with the suspect before shots were fired. GENEVA — Both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes in the early stages of the Gaza war, a UN inquiry alleged on Wednesday, saying Israel’s actions also constituted crimes against humanity because of the immense civilian losses, and that they included acts of “extermination.”The findings were from two parallel reports by “independent experts,” one focusing on the Oct. 7 Hamas assault on Israel and another on Israel’s military response, published by the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI). Women and women’s bodies were used as victory trophies by male perpetrators,” the report said.Many children who witnessed their relatives being killed were “also filmed for propaganda purposes,” with the commission finding it “particularly egregious that children were targeted for abduction.”Hamas did not respond to requests for comment.The report also said Israeli authorities “failed to protect civilians in southern Israel on almost every front.”Longstanding UN bias against Israel-The report is due to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council next week. Presenting the Western governments as party to a colonialist and imperialist conspiracy against their own young people, with the aim of depriving them of the light of Islam – the light that Iran's revolutionary regime is spreading as a revolutionary message – Kayhan stated that the present protests were the practical implementation of Khamenei's messages in his 2015 letters to the young people of the West. For this reason, American students have now grasped the roots of the West's violence and double standards, from thinking about and considering these letters, and they have made the #United_States_of_Israel hashtag go viral because of their country's occupation by the Zionist lobby."The Leader once made two predictions regarding the American protests against the corrupt [American] administration, and now both predictions have come true. First, in response to the anti-racism movement in 2020, he said that 'the fire under the ashes has begun to burn... they [the American government] will likely suppress it and extinguish it temporarily, but the fire will remain under the ashes, will not be extinguished, and will continue to burn. [Eventually,] it will destroy the current American regime, and this is because it is a mistaken regime.' Now, this fire has been rekindled, at a greater and more comprehensive scale, this time taking the form of the student movement."Second, in one of those two letters to the young Westerners, the Leader also predicted, and warned about, today's police violence against the students: 'A big mistake is any emotional, hasty move, and, particularly if a legal basis is found, it will not only not solve the problem, but will also deepen the gaps, increase the closemindedness, expand the existing rifts, and pave the way for future crises. It will have no other effect."Thus, America's absolute support for the Zionists is a naked expression of the institutionalized capitalism in that country's governing body, and this brutality and violence against the students are a manifestation of Israel's attacks on the children and women of Gaza. It is no surprise that a government that supports Israel's brutality against Gaza in all these ways uses this same brutality against young people and students, even in its own country, as it did when it stood on George Floyd's neck and prevented him from breathing! But the important point is that the audacity of America's double standards has now been exposed to all, and they [the American authorities] do not hesitate to act openly in a way that contradicts their claims – to the extent that besides the students and university professors, even the Green Party's presidential candidate who participated in the anti-Israel protests at the University of Washington [sic, Washington University in Saint Louis] was arrested!"This awakening of public opinion in light of the dialogue between Iran's Supreme Leader and the young people of the West is more dangerous and costly to the American governing body [i.e. the administration] and to Israel than hundreds of missiles, and it opens the path for the people of America and Europe [to join this awakening]. According to American professor Richard Falk, '[Khamenei's] letters can be considered the spiritual and moral cornerstone of societies, and they can be spread to all of humanity.'
