The hyoid is the U-shaped bone of the neck that is fractured in one-third of all homicides by strangulation. On this basis, postmortem detection of hyoid fracture is relevant to the diagnosis of strangulation. However, since many cases lack a hyoid fracture, the absence of this finding does not exclude strangulation as a cause of death. The reasons why some hyoids fracture and others do not may relate to the nature and magnitude of force applied to the neck, age of the victim, nature of the instrument (ligature or hands) used to strangle, and intrinsic anatomic features of the hyoid bone. We compared the case profiles and xeroradiographic appearance of the hyoids of 20 victims of homicidal strangulation with and without hyoid fracture (n = 10, each). The fractured hyoids occurred in older victims of strangulation (39 +/- 14 years) when compared to the victims with unfractured hyoids (30 +/- 10 years). The age-dependency of hyoid fracture correlated with the degree of ossification or fusion of the hyoid synchondroses. The hyoid was fused in older victims of strangulation (41 +/- 12 years) whereas the unfused hyoids were found in the younger victims (28 +/- 10 years). In addition, the hyoid bone was ossified or fused in 70% of all fractured hyoids, but, only 30% of the unfractured hyoids were fused. The shape of the hyoid bone was also found to differentiate fractured and unfractured hyoids. Fractured hyoids were longer in the anterior-posterior plane and were more steeply sloping when compared with unfractured hyoids. These data indicate that hyoids of strangulation victims, with and without fracture, are distinguished by various indices of shape and rigidity. On this basis, it may be possible to explain why some victims of strangulation do not have fractured hyoid bones.

Jeffery Epstein’s died from a suicide by hanging, the New York City medical examiner ruled Friday, a much-awaited final determination that authorities hope will put to rest conspiracy theories that have swirled since the sex offender awaiting trial hanged himself in a Manhattan jail cell last week.A person familiar with the investigation said that autopsy photos showed that the marks around Epstein’s neck did not look like those left by a rope, but instead looked more like those from fabric, which is consistent with reports that he had used a bed sheet that is issued to all prisoners who are not on suicide watch. Epstein, 66, was found unconscious around 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 10 with a bedsheet around his neck at the Metropolitan Correctional Center where he had been held while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges. He was pronounced dead about an hour later after being transported to a nearby hospital.The ruling comes a week after Sampson’s office finished the autopsy on Epstein’s corpse.CAUSE OF DEATH-The medical examiner’s office had been waiting for additional information such as toxicology results and reports from law-enforcement agencies including the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons who are investigating how Epstein was able to kill himself while under heavy security at a jail cell, officials said. Epstein’s death has sparked multiple investigations by the Department of Justice, including the FBI, the Bureau of Prisons and DOJ Inspector General wondering how it happened.Three weeks before he died, Epstein was found in a state of medical distress with marks around his neck in an apparent suicide attempt, according to officials. Epstein was then placed on suicide watch where he was moved to a special cell and subjected to daily psychiatric evaluations. A person with direct knowledge said that Epstein’s body was claimed by his brother Mark.Epstein’s attorneys had hired celebrity pathologist Michael Baden to observe the autopsy on the family’s behalf. A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said that Baden—who often works on celebrity and high-profile deaths—was in the room within eyesight of the examination.“Dr. Baden was able to observe the autopsy, however, he did not participate in the autopsy,” the spokeswoman said, adding that for the sake of transparency, “it’s general practice to allow people in the room.”Reached by phone, Baden said he is bound by a gag order from the medical examiner’s officer and Epstein’s attorneys and currently not allowed to speak about the autopsy.

For the past few weeks, rumors have circulated that she’s 400 pounds and living in Florida, or that she’s living the high life in London or the Continent, but according to the Washington Post, authorities are having a hard time locating her. Those who know her say that it’s possible she is as much of a Houdini as Epstein. Both of them liked having secrets, and the way those secrets kept people off balance. “Jeffrey always wanted to give the impression that he was an international man of mystery—‘I control everyone and everything, I collect people, I own people, I can damage people,’” says an ex-girlfriend.As part of Epstein’s original plea deal, negotiated with Alexander Acosta, the others implicated were also given immunity from prosecution, which is partly why victims like Virginia Roberts Giuffre pursued her and others in civil courts. But Epstein’s death has not stopped the current investigation. “We remain committed to standing for you,” Geoffrey Berman, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, wrote in a statement after Epstein’s death, “and our investigation of the conduct charged in the Indictment—which included a conspiracy count—remains ongoing.” There were rumors on Monday afternoon that indictments of five people were imminent.The nature of the relationship between Epstein and Maxwell, the favorite daughter of embezzling press baron Robert Maxwell, who died when he fell or was pushed from his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, is not well known. Epstein was as a practical joker who liked messing with people he regarded as lower on the food chain. A prominent 1990s Sports Illustrated model who dated Epstein describes meeting Donald Trump at one of Trump’s parties in the penthouse of the Plaza Hotel back then, and Trump goading Epstein to get her number. “Jeffrey said he wouldn’t give it to him and he had to get it from me,” she says. She finally gave it to him on another occasion, but he lost the number. “Trump called Jeffrey trying to get it again, saying ‘She gave it to me! You know she gave it to me! You can give it to me now!’ but Jeffrey wouldn’t do it.” She laughs. “Donald was such a joke to all of the models back then—we all knew he was bankrupt and had no game. I remember Jeffrey once saying he was going to be late to pick me up because he had to drop off food for Donald—he was at home crying under the covers.”Maxwell seemed to adore Epstein, who was a grinning grifter with the gift of gab, and always had a story to tell, even about his home. “He was obsessed with jewelry boxes and very detailed, ornate designs—he told me the Pope actually gave him artisans who teamed up with this one jewelry-box maker from Paris to make his dining room look like a giant version of the inside of a Parisian jewelry box,” says an ex-girlfriend. Epstein also said that his friend Lynn Forester, now married to billionaire Evelyn de Rothschild, needed his financial help during her 1990s divorce from politician Andrew Stein, and that he had graciously floated her. (“100% false,” says a spokesperson for Forester.) He claimed that the producers of The Apprentice had first approached him to make a show about a reclusive billionaire living an extravagant life, but he said no, and then introduced them to Trump. (A spokesperson for Mark Burnett denies this).On the weekends in the 1990s, Maxwell would have her Rollerblades FedExed to Epstein’s island in the Caribbean, and said she got her helicopter’s license so she could transport anyone she liked without pilots knowing who they were. Maxwell also said the island had been completely wired for video; the friend thought that she and Epstein were videotaping everyone on the island as an insurance policy, as blackmail. A source close to Maxwell says she spoke glibly and confidently about getting girls to sexually service Epstein, saying this was simply what he wanted, and describing the way she’d drive around to spas and trailer parks in Florida to recruit them. She would claim she had a phone job for them, “and you’ll make lots of money, meet everyone, and I’ll change your life.” The source continues, “Ghislaine was in love with Jeffrey the way she was in love with her father. She always thought if she just did one more thing for him, to please him, he would marry her.”Maxwell had one other thing to tell this woman: “When I asked what she thought of the underage girls, she looked at me and said, ‘they’re nothing, these girls. Stewart that he knew a “great deal” about rich and powerful figures—including “potentially damaging or embarrassing” information he said they’d divulged to him. “People confided in him without feeling awkward or embarrassed,” the late financier and convicted sex offender reportedly told Stewart on background, suggesting that his checkered history made elites feel comfortable sharing their own secrets.“One of my first thoughts on hearing of Mr. Epstein’s suicide,” Stewart wrote days after Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell after apparently hanging himself, “was that many prominent men and at least a few women must be breathing sighs of relief that whatever Mr. Epstein knew, he has taken it with him.”Stewart’s recounting of an afternoon in Epstein’s enormous Manhattan mansion last August doesn’t provide any new revelations about the financier, whose famous friends included Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. But it does paint a profoundly creepy portrait of a predator completely at ease, seemingly confident that he’d never be held accountable. The purpose of Stewart’s interview was to ascertain whether Epstein was advising Elon Musk, who was being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission after tweeting he had secured funding to take Tesla private; the S.E.C. would eventually sue him for making “false and misleading statements” that impacted markets and investors. After their meeting, Stewart said, Epstein invited him to two dinners—one with Allen; another with journalist Michael Wolff and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon. "Screencap this.”The original poster added further information about the procedures allegedly used to attempt to revive Epstein, 66, after he was found, according to BuzzFeed."The FDNY reviewed the alleged information and determined it did not come from the Department," Deputy Press Secretary Myles Miller told USA TODAY. BuzzFeed initially reported the department was opening an investigation, but Miller described the article as "inaccurate" and noted that "at no time was there an investigation."Conspiracy theories surround Epstein's death: Epstein was found "unresponsive in his cell shortly after 6:30 a.m. Saturday and was rushed to a hospital." Rashida Tlaib said Friday she would not visit her grandmother in the occupied West Bank, despite being granted an Israeli permit on humanitarian grounds, saying Israel's "oppressive" conditions aimed to humiliate her.Israel barred Tlaib and another Democrat, Rep. Ilhan Omar, from visiting Jerusalem and the West Bank over their support for the international boycott movement following an unprecedented appeal from President Donald Trump to deny them entry.Israel had said Tlaib could visit relatives in the West Bank on humanitarian grounds. Sex worker dead in Sydney stabbing and woman injured in attack -Richard Hartley-Parkinson-metro-Tuesday 13 Aug 2019 6:25 am

A woman was murdered and another was left with injuries after a man went on a knife rampage in Sydney. The body of a sex worker was discovered in a block of flats just yards from where the man emerged in the street covered in blood with a foot-long knife. The alleged knifeman has been named as Mert Ney, 21, from the Marayong to the west of the city. His victim, a woman, 21, was found with her throat cut. He is then believed to have gone into the street and started stabbing another woman, 41, in the back at a hotel in the city’s business district. Soon after that he was chased through the streets by men in suits and firefighters armed with axes. People nearby helped pin the man to the floor using a chair from a nearby cafe and a milk crate. The attacker, who was covered in blood, allegedly shouted ‘allahu akbar’ – Arabic for God is great – and ‘shoot me’ during the incident but was swiftly taken into custody by police. People were urged to avoid the area around King and Clarence Streets at the heart of the central business district (CBD) while police were carrying out investigations. The alleged attack took place at around 2pm local time, around 5am BST, near Wynard Station just as people were finishing their lunch breaks. Marco, who was working at Batch Cafe, said he saw a man in his 20s and he had a blade that was about a foot long. He said: ‘He was trying to smash a driver side window of a random car with the knife. He was unsuccessful.‘People were chasing him by that stage. There was fireys [firefighters] chasing him with axes and he went around the corner.’ A witness from a nearby Subway said: ‘We saw the person with a knife over there bleeding.’ ‘The cops are here and they blocked the road right now, so we can’t go outside. They said: “It’s a crime scene, you can’t come out”.’ He said he saw that traffic had stopped and people were running, telling Nine News Sydney: ‘All of a sudden this guy appeared with a knife in his hand covered in blood, down the front shirt, and next thing I thought OK well obviously I can’t go through all these cars. ‘As I’m thinking about doing something the guy jumps on the front of the car which was on the bonnet over here and then he goes up to the very top.’ He added: ‘I froze for probably a split second but then I thought I’m hoping that he’s not covered in any explosives or anything, so I quickly accelerated so he can get off the car.’ He said he drove left and then took a right turn where he could see the suspect again being chased by police and public. ‘He was fearless. He was completely fearless,’ he said, adding that he had ‘a big scary knife’ in his hand. NSW Police Superintendent Gavin Wood, speaking to reporters near the scene, said: ‘A number of members of the public actually physically restrained the offender. ‘And I want to acknowledge those people, those members of the public who got involved. They are brave, and I can only use that word seriously. They are significantly brave people. They approach the person… with clear evidence of a stabbing previously. ‘These people are heroes, and I want to acknowledge that. ‘These members of the public going about their day-to-day business have jumped into a situation which was extremely dangerous, extremely hostile, and they have brought a person – who we will be alleging stabbed an innocent person for no specific reason – into custody and allowed us to do our job.
