Israeli researchers develop gene-editing technology to fight HIV virus-Scientists from Tel Aviv University use CRISPR to modify body’s disease-fighting type B white blood cells, in what may become a treatment for the illness

Israeli researchers have developed a novel technology that engineers disease-fighting white blood cells to combat HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The scientists hope the method, which uses CRISPR gene editing, may lead to an effective one-time treatment for HIV and other diseases.“We developed an innovative treatment that may defeat the virus with a one-time injection, with the potential of bringing about tremendous improvement in the patient’s condition,” said Tel Aviv University’s Dr. Adi Barzel, who led the study with PhD student Alessio Nehmad.The HIV virus attacks the body’s white blood cells, weakening the immune system. There is no established cure for the disease, although it is now usually more of a chronic condition than the death sentence it once was — if proper treatments are available.Researchers from Tel Aviv University, alongside other scientists from Israel and the US, said they have genetically engineered type B white blood cells to secrete anti-HIV antibodies. The technique was found to be effective in animal models.The new treatment involves injecting genetically engineered type B white blood cells into a patient’s body, prompting the immune system to secrete antibodies to combat the HIV virus.The type B cells, a kind of white blood cell, create antibodies that fight viruses, bacteria and other invaders. The Israeli team used CRISPR gene editing technology to get coded antibodies into the body’s B cells.Gene editing is a way to permanently change DNA to attack the root causes of a disease. CRISPR is a tool to cut DNA at a specific spot. It’s long been used in the lab and is being tried for other diseases.Nehmad said in a statement explaining the technology: “When the CRISPR cuts into the desired site in the genome of the B cells, it directs the introduction of the desired gene — the gene coding for the antibody against the HIV virus.”When the engineered B cells encounter the virus in the body, the presence of the virus stimulates the B cells and prompts them to divide.“We are utilizing the very cause of the disease to combat it,” Barzel said. “If the virus changes, the B cells will also change accordingly in order to combat it, so we have created the first medication ever that can evolve in the body and defeat viruses in the ‘arms race.’”“We produced the antibody from the blood and made sure it was actually effective in neutralizing the HIV virus in the lab dish,” Barzel said. “All model animals who had been administered the treatment responded and had high quantities of the desired antibody in their blood.”The researchers hope that in the coming years, the technology will lead to the production of a medication for AIDS and for other infectious diseases, including certain types of cancers.The study was published in the peer-reviewed science journal Nature on Thursday.

A US defense company is reportedly in talks to purchase the technology developed by Israeli spyware firm NSO Group, giving it control over controversial surveillance tool Pegasus.According to a joint report published Wednesday by The Guardian, Washington Post and Haaretz, discussions are being held with L3Harris on a potential sale of NSO’s technology, in a deal that could also include the transfer of some personnel from the Israeli firm to the American contractor.The potential deal would be complicated by the fact that NSO Group has been blacklisted by the US in the wake of reports its technology was used in human rights violations.Any agreement between NSO Group and L3Harris would require the permission of both the Israeli and US governments.The outlets said the discussions on a sale were confirmed by multiple sources. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran acknowledged Wednesday it plans two tests for its new solid-fueled rocket after satellite photos showed preparations at a desert launchpad previously used in the program, even as tensions remain high over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program.The Islamic Republic will launch its satellite-carrying Zuljanah rocket twice more after conducting a previous launch, the state-run IRNA news agency quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Ahmad Hosseini as saying. He did not elaborate on a timeframe for the tests, nor said when the previous launch occurred.Each of the Zuljanah’s three stages will be evaluated during the tests, Hosseini said.Satellite images taken Tuesday by Maxar Technologies showed preparations at a launch pad at Imam Khomeini Spaceport in Iran’s rural Semnan province, the site of frequent recent failed attempts to put a satellite into orbit.One set of images showed a rocket on a transporter, preparing to be lifted and put on a launch tower. A later image Tuesday afternoon showed the rocket apparently on the tower.Though it isn’t clear when the launch will take place, erecting a rocket typically means a launch is imminent. LYSYCHANSK, Ukraine (AFP) — Ukraine pleaded with Western governments Wednesday to decide quickly on sending heavy weapons to shore up its faltering defenses, as Russia said it would evacuate civilians from a frontline chemical plant.The industrial city of Severodonetsk is under intense bombardment as Russia focuses its offensive on the Donbas region in an effort to secure a swath of eastern and southern Ukraine.Moscow’s forces have intensified efforts to cut off beleaguered Ukrainian troops remaining in the city, and have said that they will open a corridor to allow civilians to flee the besieged factory.Western defense ministers, including US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, were meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels, under pressure to step up weapons shipments to Ukraine.“Brussels, we are waiting for a decision,” Mykhaylo Podolyak, senior aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on social media, warning that Ukraine’s artillery is outgunned by 10 to one.“Daily, I receive a message from the defenders: ‘We are holding on, just say: when to expect the weapons?'” he said. ‘Critical situation’But NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, hosting the meeting of around 50 allies and partners, warned it would take time to get the latest hardware into service with trained Ukrainian troops.“Ukraine is really in a very critical situation and therefore, it’s an urgent need to step up,” Stoltenberg told journalists ahead of a gathering of NATO ministers.tThe West has poured arms into Ukraine, but Kyiv complains it has only received a tenth of what it needs and is clamoring for heavier weaponry.Stoltenberg said the allies had moved from sending older equipment to delivering “more long-range, more advanced air defense systems, more advanced artillery, more heavy weapons.”But he added “there will also be some time needed to just make the Ukrainians ready to use and operate these systems.”He said NATO members, such as the Netherlands, plan to offer training to Ukrainian forces to get them up to speed on the new heavy guns going in.Stoltenberg said alliance leaders should agree a “comprehensive assistance package” for Ukraine at a summit in Madrid later this month.About 500 civilians are taking shelter in Severodonetsk’s Azot chemical plant, according to the head of the city’s administration.The Russian defense ministry announced a humanitarian corridor would be established on Wednesday for evacuations from the plant, saying it was “guided by the principles of humanity.”Evacuees would be transported to the city of Svatove in the separatist-held region of Luhansk, Moscow said, urging those holding out at the plant to cease their “senseless resistance.”There was no response from Kyiv to the announcement, and in a video address Tuesday, Zelensky lamented “painful losses” in the ongoing fighting.“But we must stay strong. This is our nation… Hanging in there in Donbas is crucial. Donbas is the key to deciding who will dominate in the coming weeks.”After its February invasion, Russia was repelled from Kyiv, prompting it to focus its offensive on Donbas, a mainly Russian-speaking region partly held by pro-Kremlin separatists since 2014.Capturing Severodonetsk has become a key goal, as it would open the road to Sloviansk and another major city, Kramatorsk.-NATO urges heavy weaponsKyiv’s forces face an increasingly desperate situation in Severodonetsk, with Ukrainian authorities estimating the Russians now control up to 80 percent of the city as they seek to encircle it.From an elevated position in Lysychansk, an AFP team saw black smoke rising from the Azot factory in Severodonetsk and another area in the city.The Ukrainian military is using the high ground to exchange fire with Russian forces fighting for control of Severodonetsk, just across the water.Lysychansk pensioner Valentina sat on the porch of her ground-floor apartment, where she lives alone, her two walking sticks to hand.“It’s scary, very scary,” said the 83-year-old former farm worker.“Why can’t they agree at last, for God’s sake, just shake hands?”Along the road from Lysychansk to Kramatorsk, Ukrainian forces were transporting more weapons systems to the front, while specialist vehicles carried tanks for repair.In the town of Novodruzhesk, close to Lysychansk, there was still a smell of burning and smoke from houses that had been destroyed by fire from shelling over the weekend.“It’s not safe anywhere, it just depends on the time of day, that’s all,” said a soldier standing at a fire station with a skull logo on his sleeve.The Kremlin, meanwhile, said it had not received a request from London to intervene in the case of two Britons sentenced to death by pro-Moscow separatist authorities in eastern Ukraine.Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, along with Moroccan Brahim Saadun, were convicted of acting as mercenaries for Ukraine by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid called on Wednesday morning for the United Nations Security Council’s “snapback” sanctions on Iran to be implemented over its resurgent nuclear program.“We’ve arrived at the point at which the Iranian nuclear issue needs to return to the UN Security Council and all sanctions need to be reactivated,” said Lapid, speaking mostly in Hebrew to Israeli and international journalists at a press conference highlighting Israeli diplomatic achievements since his government with Naftali Bennett took office last June.According to the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the world powers, UN Security Council sanctions could be reimposed on Iran — without Russia or China being allowed to veto — if one of the parties to the agreement lodges a complaint.With a renewed nuclear deal in Vienna looking less likely by the day, Israel is hoping that the Iran nuclear issue will be transferred from the International Atomic Energy Agency back to the Security Council. Last week, a senior Israeli official said that the diplomatic pressure mounting on Iran from a frustrated West could result in the issue being referred to the UN body, an outcome Israel would welcome.“This is the next step in the diplomatic struggle against the Iranian nuclear program,” Lapid said. “The previous steps failed, and the IAEA decision says that they failed.”Lapid said that Israel presented its position on referring the nuclear issue back to the Security Council to the relevant countries, and that the UK was an “intensive partner” in the presentations.The IAEA’s Board of Governors adopted a resolution last Wednesday censuring Iran for failing to adequately explain the previous discovery of traces of enriched uranium at three sites that Tehran had not declared as having hosted nuclear activities.Lapid argued Wednesday that his government’s improved ties with Europe and the Biden administration had helped Israel influence Western positions on Iran.“The American decision not to remove the definition of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard-Corps as a terror organization is a victory of Israeli diplomacy,” said Lapid.Major gaps remain in the Israeli and American positions on Iran’s nuclear program, Lapid acknowledged: “We have a fundamental disagreement. They still think the JCPOA is the right thing and we don’t.”The divergent stances have not gotten in the way of deep and ongoing collaboration and discussion between the two countries on the issue, he stressed.Lapid added that the censure of Iran by the IAEA Board of Governors was also, at least partially, the result of work by Israeli diplomats in the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia and China.Lapid laid out Israel’s approach to countering Iran’s nuclear program, saying it focused on “causing Iran to feel surrounded.”“We want to isolate Iran in the international arena,” Lapid said. “We have tools, both multilateral and with the Americans.”A centerpiece of this approach was the government’s ties with Washington, Lapid explained. “There are differences in worldview between Israel and the US administration,” he acknowledged. “At the same time, a dialogue is being held at the highest levels, and there is attention to our positions. We are talking and will continue to talk, and there are disagreements between friends even when the goal is the same.”Greeting Biden-Turning to US President Biden’s planned July 13 visit, Lapid said “I don’t know if I’m confident” that Israel’s current government will still be in place to greet the president, as it faces a growing parliamentary crisis.But he said he’d “do everything I can to make sure it will, and I estimate it will be we who greet him on the red carpet.”Lapid added, “The president is a true friend of Israel and has been his whole life. This visit will be an opportunity to showcase the unbreakable ties between our two countries, the strength and depth of our bilateral relationship.“But it will also have an impact on regional security and economic ties in the Middle East. I am sure that the president’s visit to Israel and Saudi Arabia will have a lasting, positive impact.”Biden’s trip, announced Tuesday, will begin in Israel, where the president will meet with Israeli leaders, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.An Israeli official told The Times of Israel that Biden will meet with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, President Isaac Herzog, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and Defense Minister Benny Gantz. The official added that Biden is also slated to visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and East Jerusalem.He will also visit the West Bank and Saudi Arabia.A senior Biden administration official briefing reporters on Monday said the president would likely tour a US-funded missile defense system in Israel in order to highlight White House efforts to secure an additional $1 billion in funding for Iron Dome battery replenishments after the May 2021 Gaza war. Biden will also “discuss new innovations between our countries that use laser technologies to defeat missiles and other airborne threats.”The administration official said the Israel visit will also focus on the Jewish state’s “increasing integration into the region through the Abraham Accords — normalization agreements Jerusalem signed with the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco — through the strengthening of Israel’s ties with Israel and Egypt and through the creation of a new forum established by the Biden administration that includes the US, the UAE, Israel and India — the I2U2.”After meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, likely in Bethlehem, Biden will then fly directly from Israel to Jedda — a rarely used route that requires Saudi approval and possibly a tiny step toward normalization with the Jewish state. While in Jedda, he will participate in the annual GCC+3 summit with Gulf Cooperation Council leaders from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar in addition to Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan.-‘The right side of history’In his Wednesday press conference, Lapid reviewed the Foreign Ministry’s achievements over the past year. He pointed at three main accomplishments – rehabilitating ties with the US and Europe; strengthening relations with Middle Eastern countries, including those who normalized ties with Israel as part of the Abraham Accords; and improving the ministry’s standing in the Israeli policymaking process.Lapid revealed that Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita would be visiting Israel this summer in order to open Morocco’s embassy in Israel. His UAE counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed is also slated to visit, said Lapid.Addressing the unexpected challenge of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Lapid stressed that “We stood on the right side of history.”Israel has sought to maintain open communication with both Russia and Ukraine since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his forces to invade on February 24. Bennett held a handful of calls during the war’s first weeks with both Putin and Zelensky as he sought to exploit Israel’s working ties with both countries to help mediate a ceasefire to end the war.At the same time, Israel has rejected requests from Kyiv and the West for military equipment such as anti-missile batteries, part of a policy meant to preserve ties with Russia.
