JTA – It seemed like a headline out of the 19th century: a warning of “Jew-free zones” at the University of California-Berkeley.That’s the phrase being employed by some prominent pro-Israel groups this week to describe a dispute at UC Berkeley’s law school, where nine student groups recently voted to adopt by-laws that state they will not invite any visiting speakers to campus who “hold views in support of Zionism, the apartheid state of Israel, and the occupation of Palestine.”But is the “Jew-free” label accurate? Not according to Jewish leadership at the university. Here’s a rundown of the controversy, and where people have come down on it.How did the UC Berkeley situation start? In August, nine student groups at the UC Berkeley law school (out of more than 100) signed a statement authored by the group Berkeley Law Students for Justice in Palestine.Under the justification of “protecting the safety and welfare of Palestinian students,” the statement pledges not to invite “speakers that have expressed and continued to hold views… in support of Zionism, the apartheid state of Israel, and the occupation of Palestine,” as reported by J. The Jewish News of Northern California.The student groups who backed the pledge include Women of Berkeley Law, Berkeley Law Muslim Student Association, Asian Pacific American Law Students Association and the Queer Caucus, according to the organizing group.Opposition was swift and came from the highest office at the law school. But the reactions to it could be a signal of something more.The forceful public tactics being employed by pro-Israel groups well versed in campus controversies are a sign that their approach to UC Berkeley may follow a by-now familiar playbook, much to the chagrin of Jewish faculty on campus who would prefer to keep things quiet.StandWithUs, which is threatening to file a Title VI complaint, brings to mind several similar investigations that the US Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights has opened up against schools in recent years for allegedly fostering antisemitic environments on campus.Most recently, the Brandeis Center and campus antisemitism watchdog group Jewish On Campus succeeded in opening an investigation at the University of Vermont by filing a complaint about ad-hoc student groups that said they wouldn’t admit Zionist students, among other things. The school’s administration has vigorously denied the allegations.Marcus declined to tell JTA whether the Brandeis Center would also be looking to file a complaint against UC Berkeley. But the organization argues that any campus anti-Zionist speech or activity is tantamount to discriminating against Jewish students, and that universities have an obligation to oppose such speech by any legal means. Sciutto had since recovered, and CNN directed Sciutto to deal with a “personal situation,” the report said.CNN has since given him leave, The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday. He accordingly did not appear on Tuesday’s or Wednesday’s editions of CNN Newsroom, the 9 a.m. ET show he anchors alongside Poppy Harlow. CNN did not respond to a request for comment, according to The Daily Mail report.Sciutto has traveled to Ukraine three times for CNN since the start of the Russian conflict and ensuing invasion to report on the war. It has been damaged in the fighting, prompting international alarm, and its head was detained by occupying forces through the weekend before his release Monday.Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom shut down the last of the plant’s six reactors on September 11 because Russian military activity had cut reliable external power supplies for cooling and other safety systems, threatening a potentially catastrophic meltdown.But now the company faces a different problem.In an interview with The Associated Press, Energoatom President Petro Kotin said the company could restart two of the reactors in a matter of days to protect safety installations as winter approaches and temperatures drop.“If you have low temperature, you will just freeze everything inside. Amini was detained by the country’s “morality police” in Tehran for allegedly wearing her hijab loosely, going against the government’s strict religious dress code for women. Iranians have since protested the government and police, calling for women to be able to choose whether they wear the hijab.Women have gone out in public without their hijabs, burned their hijabs, and documented police violence to share with people outside the country through virtual private networks, due to the government shutting down online communication. The protests have resulted in dozens of people killed and more than 1,000 people arrested. (AP) — Even though a destructive hurricane tore through his community just days earlier, nothing was going to stop Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz from holding prayer services Tuesday night for the start of the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.Throughout a southwest Florida devastated by Hurricane Ian, Jews prepared to hold worship services for Yom Kippur, a day in which they fast for 24 hours and ask forgiveness for the wrongs they have committed during the year, although many were doing so with plans drastically modified by the storm.Some congregations were skipping in-person attendance for the all-important Kol Nidre service Tuesday evening out of concern it would be too dangerous to drive at night with debris piled up on roads and traffic lights out. Others were holding it online.At Minkowicz’s synagogue, the religiously traditional Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers, members planned a community dinner before fasting to start at sunset Tuesday, with the help of caterers from South Florida, on the other side of the state.Some buildings on the 5-acre (2-hectare) campus were flooded. But the main building, where 50 or so people sheltered during the hurricane, was comparatively unscathed because of its higher elevation.Power returned Sunday night, and the campus had turned into a community center of sorts, with food trucks and a food pantry. A large tent was erected in the parking lot where members of the synagogue — or anyone from the community — could stop by for a meal.“The most important thing we have is to make God happy,” Minkowicz said. “If God is happy, everything works out.”In need of resources, and of community-At Temple Beth El in Fort Myers, congregants planned to have in-person Yom Kippur services Wednesday, with Kol Nidre services available only online Tuesday night. However, plans had been in flux at the congregation, which is part of the progressive Reform movement, since utility trucks were using the parking lot as a rest area for utility worker breaks. The trucks were expected to be gone by Wednesday’s services.Electricity was restored to the synagogue, whose property was littered with fallen trees and debris, but traffic lights were still down in the neighborhood, so Rabbi Nicole Luna said congregants should consider their safety when deciding whether to attend in person. Compared with other parts of the state, the Jewish community in southwest Florida is relatively new, with the oldest congregation, Temple Beth El, formed only in 1954 with 22 families.Rather than making them question their religious convictions, the ferocious storm has renewed the faith of many members of their congregation, said Lawrence Dermer and his wife. During the 10 days between the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur, Jews traditionally say to one another, “May you be inscribed in the Book of Life,” in what is almost an entreaty that they be blessed with another year of life.“Yom Kippur is about the fragility of life. Over 100 people have now died as a result of Hurricane Ian as officials continue to search for missing persons in the southeast U.S.CNN reported that 102 people have been declared dead due to the tragedy as of Tuesday, while CBS News has confirmed that the number is at least 106.The bulk of the confirmed deaths have been reported in Lee County, Fla., which had experienced 55 related deaths as of Tuesday.Three people died in Cuba before the hurricane made its way to the U.S., and four people have been reported dead in North Carolina.Meanwhile, almost 2,000 people in Florida have been rescued since Ian’s arrival in the state, and 500,000 people remain deprived of electrical power and some others still lacking access to clean tap water.The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced on Tuesday that it has approved more than $70 million for recovery efforts among Florida survivors of the hurricane.“Teams are visiting shelters now to help survivors apply for assistance,” FEMA wrote in a statement, adding that disaster recovery centers will begin opening on Tuesday in the state.While many die directly due to the ruthless winds and flooding that result from hurricanes, more people die from indirect causes, according to a recent analysis by The Hill.Indirect hurricane deaths are “casualties that cannot be ascribed directly to the storm’s brutal assault but that would not have happened without it,” and happen more commonly than direct deaths by a margin of 371 to 324.The analysis by The Hill examined deaths from the nine deadliest hurricanes in the past 12 years, not including Hurricane Ian, which will likely be among their number.
