This project is the largest First Nations economic partnership and the largest loan from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) in Canadian history.These funds will support Sen?á?w, an on-reserve residential and commercial development project that will be owned and operated by S?wx_wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). Sen?á?w, “the place inside the head of False Creek,” is located on land that was forcibly taken away from S?wx_wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) in the early 1900s and returned by the courts in 2003. An Israeli project to use nesting boxes to attract barn owls and kestrels to control rodents instead of using chemicals is set to spread its wings to North Africa and the United Arab Emirates.Veteran ornithologist Yossi Leshem, director of the International Center for the Study of Bird Migration, told a conference on Wednesday that the project, established in 2002, was being adopted by Prof. Imad Cherkaoui, a Moroccan ornithologist and landscape ecologist and former Morocco director for BirdLife International.Cherkaoui is slated to serve as the project’s ambassador in North African countries with which Israel has no diplomatic relations, Leshem said.He added that the United Arab Emirates’ climate change and environment minister had indicated that his country would also adopt the project, after meeting with Leshem at the Dubai Expo, which ended earlier this year.“This is about how we want to see the Middle East,” Leshem told the confab on nature restoration (also known as rewilding), organized at Ramat Hanadiv by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, in partnership with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the Konrad Adenauar Foundation.“We failed with the dove of peace. And statistically speaking, that’s not particularly unusual.On Sunday, Nadal Ighbaria, a, journalist, was gunned down in his car in the northern city of Umm al-Fahm, reportedly as he made his way home from mosque.A day later, Manar Hajaj and her daughter Khadra, 14, were shot dead as they unpacked groceries outside their home in Lod, near Tel Aviv. Khadra’s twin sister, Maryam, was shot in the leg as she fled, and is believed to have survived only because the killer’s gun jammed.Not much more than a year ago, Lod was wracked by some of the worst Arab-Jewish violence Israel has experienced in decades, an accompaniment to a major, Hamas-initiated conflict between Israel and Gaza. This week’s killings, by contrast, were by all accounts “internal” Arab gangland murders. Overall, they are reported to be the 73rd, 74th and 75th fatalities this year in a relentless wave of killings directly afflicting the Arab community, horrifying and potentially endangering all Israelis.The three victims, it is believed by police, had no criminal connections but were fatally entwined nonetheless. And that has been the case with numerous such murders, where innocents have been targeted in acts of revenge against other criminals, as messages of deterrence, or been in the wrong place at the wrong time and caught in gangland crossfire — as was the case in January for Ammar Hujayrat, a 4-year-old who was fatally hit by a stray bullet in a playground.Nowhere is safe.-This week’s fatalitiesJournalist Ighbaria, ironically, had reported on crime in his city, and had previously been targeted for assassination.The writing was on the wall,” his bereaved father lamented on Monday. Visiting Lod on Tuesday, Shabtai announced the establishment of a 300-strong police task force in the city, to “carry out substantive and offensive operational missions in the sector.”The wider struggle-Israel’s Public Security Minister Omer Barlev on Tuesday noted that crime in the Arab community has been skyrocketing for years, and referenced years of relative neglect by previous governments and police in tackling it. He also stressed the complexity of the task — for a police force trying to bring law and order to a community part of which is too terrified to help and a small part of which, he intimated, glories in the violence.“The fight against crime in Arab society is difficult, complex and requires a very long period of aggressive and determined police and enforcement activity,” Barlev said. “This goes hand in hand with large investments in, among other things, education, welfare and employment, along with a change in cultural perception; treating the scourge of violence in Arab society does not only amount to thwarting and solving.”The government has over the past year prioritized and directed resources to tackle the blight, with Barlev’s deputy Yoav Segalovich, a redoubtable former senior police officer, at the forefront of the effort. TIRANA, Albania (AP) — The last staff of the Iranian Embassy in Tirana left the building Thursday after they were given 24 hours to leave Albania over a major cyberattack that the Albanian government blames on Iran.It is the first known case of a country cutting diplomatic relations over a cyberattack.The final two embassy cars with about 10 passengers left the compound Thursday near noon after much movement inside the building overnight.Albanian special police forces and officers were seen surrounding the compound, which still flew the Iranian flag, immediately after the Iranians left.Movement inside the Iranian embassy in Tirana had been nonstop overnight. An empty barrel was seen taken into the compound and later a fire was started in it, apparently burning documents. A diplomatic car went in and out, while an Albanian police officer communicated with the embassy before two officers entered and left after a few minutes.On July 15, a cyberattack temporarily shut down numerous Albanian government digital services and websites. Prime Minister Edi Rama said Wednesday that there was “undeniable evidence” that the Iranian government was behind the attack.The United States supported the move by Albania, a NATO member, and vowed unspecified retaliation against Iran for what it called “a troubling precedent for cyberspace.”Iran condemned the diplomats’ expulsion, calling the action ill-considered and short-sighted, according to Iranian state TV. We see that the Ukrainians have been able to fight back, to strike back and regain some territory," he said.Hardest of all is the task facing the Ukrainian armed forces, more than six months into a conflict once seen by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a military intervention likely to last a few days, but which has now turned into a grinding war of attrition.While Ukraine has sought weapons and ammunition, it now needs winter equipment. During Thursday’s meeting, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said her country would deliver electricity-generating equipment, tents and other material. But more is needed.“Winter’s coming, and winter’s going to be hard on the battlefield in Ukraine.
