Delays and cancellations continue to disrupt flights in and out of Toronto this morning as the U.S. East Coast reels from a massive blizzard.More than 50 of Saturday's flights out of Pearson International Airport — mostly to eastern seaboard destinations including New York, Washington and Philadelphia — were cancelled, and roughly a dozen others had been delayed, by early Saturday morning according to the airport's website. Roughly the same number of arrivals were also cancelled.Travellers are advised to check their flight's status before leaving for the airport. Cities across the northeastern U.S. are under blizzard watches and Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina have declared states of emergency because of the weekend storm that is expected to drop at at least 60 centimetres. Forecasters have also predicted more than a centimetre of ice accumulation in the Carolinas, and potentially serious coastal flooding in the mid- Atlantic. Meanwhile, Porter Airlines says it is still dealing with software problems that caused more than 15 flight cancellations out of Billy Bishop Airport on Friday. The "prolonged systems outage" continues to affect Porter's reservations and other systems, the airline said Saturday in a statement on its website.The airline says passengers whose flights were cancelled on Friday will be rebooked on flights today, provided seats are available.Some Porter flights to the U.S. East Coast have also been cancelled. Air Canada flights from the downtown island airport are not affected by the computer issues.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Maintenance errors by three U.S. airmen damaged a nuclear-armed missile in its silo in Colorado in 2014, triggering an accident investigation, the Air Force said on Friday.The accident occurred in May 2014, to a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile assigned to the 90th Missile Wing in northern Colorado, the Air Force said in a statement.The Associated Press first reported the incident.The missile was damaged while the airmen were troubleshooting a problem with a diagnostic test, the Air Force said."The incident did not result in any injuries, prevent the Air Force from meeting its ICBM requirements, or create a hazard to public safety," the Air Force said.An investigation found that the maintenance team chief did not follow the technical guidance, the Air Force said. DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Senior Saudi and Iranian figures clashed behind closed doors at a private meeting convened by the World Economic Forum in Davos this week to try to promote peace in Syria, participants said.The barbed exchange between Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif at an invitation-only meeting on Wednesday underlined the hostility between the two Gulf rivals, who are waging proxy wars in Syria, Yemen and Iraq.Riyadh broke off diplomatic relations and cut off trade and transport ties with Tehran two weeks ago after protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Iran. The protests erupted following the Saudi execution of a leading Shi'ite cleric that outraged predominantly Shi'ite Iranians.The standoff highlights some of the reasons U.S.-Russian-backed peace talks on Syria may not open as planned in Geneva next week. There is no agreement on who should represent opponents of the Syrian government, and Riyadh-backed rebels are demanding that Russia first stop air strikes in Syria.An official photographer snapped Faisal and Zarif shaking hands outside the room. LA LOCHE — Alex Janvier was walking through the halls of La Loche Community School when he heard a teacher yell, “Shooter in the school.”Alex Janvier, 15, ran back to his Grade 10 class, where fellow students and the teacher were already seated on the floor. He closed the door and the teacher told him to move with them toward the centre of the room.The teacher was texting the principal and telling the students to stay calm.“I was very scared. He was close to us,” Alex Janvier said.FacebookTeacher Marie Janvier, 23, was confirmed as one of the victims.Four people died on Friday, including a teacher and two relatives of the alleged shooter, who were fatally shot in a La Loche home before the shooter entered the school at around 1 p.m. and began shooting. Multiple other victims in the school were injured, but details about the number of victims and the extent of their injuries were not available.Alex Janvier estimates that shots rang out, apparently just feet from their door, every 20 or 30 seconds, for a few minutes, before the shooting stopped. Someone then yelled that the RCMP had entered the school.Alex Janvier and the students then heard, “Stop, please! Stop!”Less than a minute later, police opened their classroom door and told them that the suspect had been apprehended.Alex Janvier knew the two boys who were shot in the residence before the shooter went to the school, as well as the deceased teacher. Maureen Levy said investigators were at two locations: a home in the 300 block of Dene Crescent and the Dene building at the school.After receiving a complaint about an active shooter in the community at about 1 p.m., officers responded to the Dene building and “immediately began searching for the suspect.” At 1:47 p.m., a male was taken into custody outside the school, at which time a firearm was seized. DAVOS, Switzerland - Friday's mass shooting at a school in La Loche, Sask., is casting a shadow over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's final day at an international summit of financial and economic elites.The shooting was the first thing Trudeau talked about with Lebanese Prime Minister Tamman Salam during their meeting Saturday morning at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.The RCMP confirmed that four people were killed, a number of others were wounded, and that a lone male suspect was arrested after shots rang out at the Dene community's junior and senior high school.Trudeau told Salam the tragedy has seen Canadians pull together yet again for a community needing support. Health authorities have added eight tropical destinations to a travel alert about an illness linked with a severe birth defect and spread by mosquitoes.The updated alert issued Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention brings the total to 22 destinations, most in Latin America and the Caribbean, where there have been outbreaks of the Zika virus.The new locations are Barbados, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Saint Martin and Guyana; Cape Verde, off the coast of western Africa; and Samoa in the South Pacific.Last week's alert included Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Suriname and Venezuela.The CDC says pregnant women should consider postponing trips to these destinations because the virus has been linked with microcephaly. Affected newborns have unusually small heads and abnormal brain development.All travellers to these areas are advised to take precautions, including using repellent and wearing long sleeves and long pants, to avoid mosquito bites.Zika illness can cause fever, rash and joint pain but most people infected by mosquito bites don't show symptoms. Bottom, Special Agent in Charge of the Honolulu Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is seeking the public’s help in providing information leading to the location and arrest of fugitive husband and wife, John and Julieann Dimitrion. The couple will be featured this week on the world premier of the new CNBC program, “American Greed: The Fugitives.” The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to their capture.In April 2009, the Dimitrions pled guilty to operating a fraud scheme in which they used their companies to convince distressed homeowners to relinquish their homes with the promise of improving the victims’ financial position. They promised to invest the proceeds of the home sales, but, instead, the Dimitrions used the victims’ money to fund their own lavish lifestyles. Multiple Oahu families lost their homes as a result of the Dimitrions’ crimes.The Dimitrions were scheduled to be sentenced in Honolulu U.S. District Court on Tuesday July 6, 2010, but they failed to appear at the sentencing. Warrants were immediately issued for their arrests, and an FBI fugitive manhunt is underway.The Dimitrions were last seen by witnesses on the evening of Friday July 2, 2010, at church services held at the Mililani Recreation Center. The FBI suspects that they have joined a domestic extremist group affiliated with the Sovereign Citizen’s Movement who arranged for the couple to be flown to the U.S. mainland on a private jet to escape justice. They were last known to have been hiding in Alabama in 2011. Their current whereabouts are unknown.According to CNBC, “American Greed: The Fugitives” explores the inside world of active white-collar crime cases, telling never-before-heard stories. On a Mortgage Alliance Web site, the company run by John Dimitrion and his wife, Julie Dimitrion, advertises itself as trusted. Both Dimitrions have been charged with fraud.The two top executives of a Honolulu mortgage company were indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly coordinating a scheme that bilked banks and troubled homeowners out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, court documents show.John M. Dimitrion, founder and chief executive of Mortgage Alliance LLC and his wife, Julie A.B. Dimitrion, the firm's chief financial officer, were indicted with Rick Kealoha Pa Jr. and Benjamin Yoshito Thompson after they allegedly defrauded homeowners and lending institutions by promising to stave off foreclosure.The indictments are the result of a more than yearlong FBI investigation into mortgage fraud in Hawai'i. FBI agents made the arrests yesterday."It's part of an ongoing investigation into mortgage fraud crimes in Hawai'i," said assistant U.S. attorney Clare E. Connors, who is prosecuting the case.The four are accused of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements on loan applications to obtain $1.3 million in new loans between 2005 and 2007. Of that money, $139,114 was used at the discretion of John and Julie Dimitrion and an undisclosed amount went to Mortgage Alliance, Pa and Thompson.If convicted, the four face up to 20 years in prison on each charge.They are accused of targeting homeowners on the brink of foreclosure — including some who were members of Calvary Chapel Pearl Harbor — and offering relief if the homeowners agreed to a temporary sale of the house to a third party "investor" who worked for John Dimitrion, according to court documents.The four allegedly told the homeowners they could remain in their homes and their title would be returned to them after a set period of time.Homeowners paid John Dimitrion $20,000 for the service, thinking their mortgage payments would be handled by Dimitrion's company, court documents said. John Dimitrion and his associates applied for larger loans than what the homeowners owed and allegedly stole the proceeds by funneling the money into fake escrow accounts created by Julie Dimitrion, the documents said.In each case the homeowner was unable to make the payments on the larger loan, the documents show.John and Julie Dimitrion took the money from the escrow accounts for themselves and failed to make all the monthly payments for the distressed homeowners, the documents said. When the loan defaulted, the "investors" who worked for Dimitrion initiated eviction proceedings against the homeowners, according to the court documents.

THE CASE-The case is part of ongoing investigations of mortgage fraud in Hawai'i that the FBI's Honolulu division has been handling for more than a year.In May 2008, five people — John Gilbert Mendoza, Antonio Alcantara Jr., Ira Altwegg, Albert A. Alimoot Jr. and Evan M. Koizumi — were indicted as a result of the same investigation. Mendoza and Altwegg were former employees of Mortgage Alliance LLC.Phone calls to Mortgage Alliance's Alakea Street office seeking comment for this story were not answered yesterday.At the time of the earlier indictments, John Dimitrion told The Advertiser that his company was aboveboard."We don't tolerate any of that in our company," he said in a May 29, 2008, interview. "I've fired several people after catching them in fraudulent activity, but with so many transactions going through, you kind of have to trust our loan officers."Mortgage Alliance LLC was founded by John Dimitrion in 2001 and at one time employed between 60 and 80 people.In 2007, Hawaii Business magazine ranked it the fourth-best small company to work for in the state, ahead of the local offices of American Express, Edward Jones and Deloitte and Touche LLP.The company's Web site, www.mortgagealliancehawaii.com, has a picture of John and Julie Dimitrion holding an award from Hawaii Business magazine.Thompson made his initial appearance in front of U.S. Magistrate Kevin S.C. Chang yesterday afternoon. He entered a plea of not guilty and was released on $25,000 bail.John and Julie Dimitrion are in federal custody and are scheduled to make their initial appearance in U.S. District Court today. Pa is on the Mainland and is being sought by FBI agents.

THE SCHEME-Using online advertising and first-person solicitations, John Dimitrion and his crew sought out homeowners facing foreclosure and enlisted them in their foreclosure bailout program, according to the federal indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court yesterday.John Dimitrion charged the homeowners $10,000 to pay the "investor" who would buy their home but not take possession, court documents said. He charged another $10,000 to put the majority of the proceeds from the loan transaction into an account maintained by Global Financial Holdings LLC., an unlicensed escrow company created by Julie Dimitrion, according to the court documents.By agreement between the fake investor and the homeowner, the money in the Global Financial bank account was supposed to be used to cover monthly mortgage payments, taxes, association fees and other costs associated with the properties, according to court documents.When the homeowner ran into difficulty making payments on the new mortgage, the homeowner was told the money in the Global Financial account would cover it. John Dimitrion told the homeowners that when they got their title back, they would get the leftover loan proceeds from the Global Financial account, court documents said.For the fake investor to get a new loan for the property, he or she had to lie to the bank by saying they intended to live in the home.The fake investor, aided by employees of Mortgage Alliance, prepared and submitted fake documentation to the banks, the documents said.The banks then transferred the loan proceeds from their Mainland accounts to the accounts of escrow companies in Hawai'i responsible for closing the fraudulent real estate transaction, according to court documents.In each case, the amount of the new loan taken out in the name of the allegedly fake investor was larger than the original loan owed by the homeowner, which resulted in large loan proceeds.John Dimitrion controlled the escrow accounts and decided how the money was distributed, according to court records. In each case the homeowner was unable to make their payments and Dimitrion and his associates attempted to evict them.

THE HOMES-The indictment against Dimitrion and his associates outlines fraud that resulted in eviction proceedings against two 'Ewa Beach homeowners and the owner of a condominium in Kapolei.In the first 'Ewa Beach case, on July 28, 2005, John Dimitrion met with the owner of the home at 91-1033 Kaiakua St. who was struggling to make monthly mortgage payments, according to court documents. Dimitrion introduced the homeowner to Thompson and said that because Thompson had good credit, he could take title to the property until the homeowner's credit was repaired, the documents say.Dimitrion told the homeowner that because his home value had increased significantly since he first bought it, the new loan in Thompson's name would dig into the equity in the home. The loan proceeds from the transaction would be put into Global Financial's account and would be used to pay the monthly mortgage payments.Dimitrion told the homeowners the service would cost $20,000, according to the indictment.Dimitrion and Thompson signed two loan applications for the Kaiakua Street house and sent them to Fremont Investment and Loan.The applications misrepresented that Thompson intended to occupy the house and included false information about Thompson's employment, bank account balances and tax returns, according to court documents.On July 29, 2005, Fremont Investment and Loan funded the two loans and made two wire transfers totaling $701,387 from a California bank to the escrow company's account in Hawai'i.John Dimitrion decided how to disburse the money from the escrow company by giving $10,000 to Thompson, $68,000 to Global Financial, and $16,000 in fees to Mortgage Alliance, according to the indictment.Reach Peter Boylan at pboylan@honoluluadvertiser.com.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday that his country will need more US military aid because of the nuclear deal with Iran.Israel is currently negotiating a new 10-year military aid package with Washington that it says will need to grow beyond the $3.1 billion yearly currently provided by the United States.The figure excludes US spending on projects including Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system.Netanyahu reiterated his argument that the nuclear deal that has seen sanctions lifted against its regional rival Iran would require Israel to increase spending to maintain its military edge.The influx of cash, he said, would allow Iran to further back proxy militants, including Israeli enemies Hezbollah.Netanyahu said it would be important to "resist Iranian aggression in the region, which continues and might even accelerate given the amount of funds that they're going to get with the lifting of sanctions". "And the strongest way to stop Iranian aggression is to bolster America's allies, first and foremost (of) which is Israel," he said.The Israeli leader added that "we're talking about a bigger package. But remember that even over a 10-year period, it pales in comparison to the enormous funds that Iran gets".The United States has unblocked an estimated $100 billion of Iranian assets held abroad and settled a long-running international dispute that will see Iran get $1.7 billion directly from Washington following the implementation of the nuclear deal.Netanyahu, whose country is believed to be the sole nuclear power in the Middle East, though it has never declared it, strongly opposed the accord and labelled it a "historic mistake". Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel's Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said Thursday he has revoked the permanent residency permits of four Palestinians from east Jerusalem who allegedly killed Israelis in Jerusalem in recent attacks.The rare move is yet another Israeli attempt to stem the nearly four-month wave of Palestinian attacks against Israeli civilians and security forces, many of which were carried out by east Jerusalem residents.The interior ministry named three of the Palestinians as Walid Atrash, Mohammad Abu Kaf and Abed Dawiat.They are accused of stoning a car driven by 64-year-old Alexander Levlovich on September 13, causing it to veer off the road and into a tree, leading to his death.The fourth Palestinian was Bilal Ghanem, who together with another Palestinian is accused of shooting and stabbing passengers on a bus on October 13.That attack killed Chaim Haviv, 78, and Alon Govberg, 51, and fatally wounded Richard Lakin, a 76-year-old American-Israeli."This is a rare measure, but the severity of the deeds committed by the four justifies my decision," Deri said."During the attacks, the terrorists took advantage of the freedom of movement they were entitled to as permanent residents with Israeli identification cards."From now on, all terrorists will know that their terror attacks will have consequences beyond imprisonment," he said in a statement.An interior ministry spokeswoman said that in the past decade, only four Palestinians from east Jerusalem had their residency permits revoked for deadly attacks on Israelis.The spokeswoman said it was yet to be decided what the legal status of the four affected by Thursday's decision would be, noting options such as a tourist or temporary work visa.Twenty-four Israelis, an American and an Eritrean have been killed in Palestinian attacks including stabbings, car rammings and gunfire targeting security forces and civilians since October 1.At the same time, 155 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, most while carrying out attacks and others during clashes and demonstrations.Israel recently reinstated its controversial practice of demolishing homes of Palestinian attackers in east Jerusalem, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called "one of the most efficient tools" in discouraging Palestinian attacks.

For the second day, Palestinian workers will not be allowed into some Jewish settlements in the West Bank on Wednesday, following two stabbing attacks in two separate communities.“Security measures will continue in the Israeli communities in the areas of Bethlehem, Hebron, Nablus, and some of the communities in the area of Ramallah,” an army spokesperson said Tuesday.The head of the IDF’s West Bank division, Brig. Gen. Lior Carmeli, first decided to keep Palestinian workers out of all settlements in the West Bank on Monday evening, following the terror attacks in Otniel and Tekoa.Carmeli opted to renew the policy “following the daily situational assessment and in light of recent terror attacks,” the army spokesperson said.“These measures will be evaluated on a daily basis, and additional security measures in other parts of Judea and Samaria have already been removed,” the army official said.In addition, Hawara checkpoint outside of Nablus will be closed to south-bound traffic for several hours on Wednesday for renovations, an IDF spokesperson told The Times of Israel.The closure is unrelated to the current security situation, she added.In its place, traffic will be directed through a temporary checkpoint a few meters away, the spokes person said.Though the IDF did not wish to state when exactly the checkpoint would be closed, as it may be subject to the change, Osama Mansour, head of the Palestinian military liaison in Nablus, told the Palestinian Ma’an news service that the closures would occur between 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.On Sunday, a Palestinian terrorist stabbed 38-year-old Dafna Meir to death at the entrance to her home at Otniel, in the Hebron Hills. Meir, a mother of six, was laid to rest on Monday.On Monday morning, a Palestinian teenager stabbed and moderately injured Michal Froman, who is 18 weeks pregnant, inside the Bethlehem-area settlement of Tekoa. Following the stabbing, Palestinian workers were barred from the settlement.Froman was out of danger in the hospital after surgery later Monday, and the fetus was stable and unharmed, doctors said. She spoke to the media from her hospital bed on Tuesday.Palestinian laborers are occasionally banned from settlements in response to security incidents or Jewish holidays.Thousands of Palestinians — as many as 20,000 by some estimates — are employed inside settlements, mostly in construction, manufacturing and agriculture.In June 2014, thousands of Palestinian workers were barred from settlements in the Etzion settlement bloc and elsewhere during a search for three kidnapped Israeli teens, who were later found murdered by Hamas terrorists.That move, which was seen as a way of putting pressure on the Palestinian population, drew the ire of some settlers, who said the directive harmed their businesses.
