U.S. storm delays, cancels Saturday flights at Pearson-[CBC]-January 23, 2016-YAHOONEWS
Delays and cancellations continue to disrupt flights in and out of Toronto this morning as the U.S. East Coast reels from a massive blizzard.More than 50 of Saturday's flights out of Pearson International Airport — mostly to eastern seaboard destinations including New York, Washington and Philadelphia — were cancelled, and roughly a dozen others had been delayed, by early Saturday morning according to the airport's website. Roughly the same number of arrivals were also cancelled.Travellers are advised to check their flight's status before leaving for the airport. Cities across the northeastern U.S. are under blizzard watches and Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina have declared states of emergency because of the weekend storm that is expected to drop at at least 60 centimetres. Forecasters have also predicted more than a centimetre of ice accumulation in the Carolinas, and potentially serious coastal flooding in the mid- Atlantic. Meanwhile, Porter Airlines says it is still dealing with software problems that caused more than 15 flight cancellations out of Billy Bishop Airport on Friday. The "prolonged systems outage" continues to affect Porter's reservations and other systems, the airline said Saturday in a statement on its website.The airline says passengers whose flights were cancelled on Friday will be rebooked on flights today, provided seats are available.Some Porter flights to the U.S. East Coast have also been cancelled. Air Canada flights from the downtown island airport are not affected by the computer issues.

(Reuters) - Thick snow covered the Washington D.C. area on Saturday as a potentially record-breaking blizzard paralyzed road, rail and airline travel on the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina to New York.More than 85 million people in at least 20 states were covered by a winter weather warning, watch or advisory, the Weather Channel said, and many stores were left with bare shelves as residents stocked up on food, water and wine, preparing to spend the weekend indoors.At least six people were killed in car crashes due to icy roads in North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee.The governors of several states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia, as well as the mayor of Washington, declared states of emergency. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Maintenance errors by three U.S. airmen damaged a nuclear-armed missile in its silo in Colorado in 2014, triggering an accident investigation, the Air Force said on Friday.The accident occurred in May 2014, to a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile assigned to the 90th Missile Wing in northern Colorado, the Air Force said in a statement.The Associated Press first reported the incident.The missile was damaged while the airmen were troubleshooting a problem with a diagnostic test, the Air Force said."The incident did not result in any injuries, prevent the Air Force from meeting its ICBM requirements, or create a hazard to public safety," the Air Force said.An investigation found that the maintenance team chief did not follow the technical guidance, the Air Force said. The protests erupted following the Saudi execution of a leading Shi'ite cleric that outraged predominantly Shi'ite Iranians.The standoff highlights some of the reasons U.S.-Russian-backed peace talks on Syria may not open as planned in Geneva next week. U.S. storm delays, cancels Saturday flights at Pearson-[CBC]-January 23, 2016-YAHOONEWS
Delays and cancellations continue to disrupt flights in and out of Toronto this morning as the U.S. East Coast reels from a massive blizzard.More than 50 of Saturday's flights out of Pearson International Airport — mostly to eastern seaboard destinations including New York, Washington and Philadelphia — were cancelled, and roughly a dozen others had been delayed, by early Saturday morning according to the airport's website. Roughly the same number of arrivals were also cancelled.Travellers are advised to check their flight's status before leaving for the airport. Cities across the northeastern U.S. are under blizzard watches and Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina have declared states of emergency because of the weekend storm that is expected to drop at at least 60 centimetres. Forecasters have also predicted more than a centimetre of ice accumulation in the Carolinas, and potentially serious coastal flooding in the mid- Atlantic. Meanwhile, Porter Airlines says it is still dealing with software problems that caused more than 15 flight cancellations out of Billy Bishop Airport on Friday. The "prolonged systems outage" continues to affect Porter's reservations and other systems, the airline said Saturday in a statement on its website.The airline says passengers whose flights were cancelled on Friday will be rebooked on flights today, provided seats are available.Some Porter flights to the U.S. East Coast have also been cancelled. Air Canada flights from the downtown island airport are not affected by the computer issues.

(Reuters) - Thick snow covered the Washington D.C. area on Saturday as a potentially record-breaking blizzard paralyzed road, rail and airline travel on the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina to New York.More than 85 million people in at least 20 states were covered by a winter weather warning, watch or advisory, the Weather Channel said, and many stores were left with bare shelves as residents stocked up on food, water and wine, preparing to spend the weekend indoors.At least six people were killed in car crashes due to icy roads in North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee.The governors of several states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia, as well as the mayor of Washington, declared states of emergency. Officials warned people not to drive.The Washington and Baltimore metro areas were expected to bear the brunt of the storm. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Maintenance errors by three U.S. airmen damaged a nuclear-armed missile in its silo in Colorado in 2014, triggering an accident investigation, the Air Force said on Friday.The accident occurred in May 2014, to a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile assigned to the 90th Missile Wing in northern Colorado, the Air Force said in a statement.The Associated Press first reported the incident.The missile was damaged while the airmen were troubleshooting a problem with a diagnostic test, the Air Force said."The incident did not result in any injuries, prevent the Air Force from meeting its ICBM requirements, or create a hazard to public safety," the Air Force said.An investigation found that the maintenance team chief did not follow the technical guidance, the Air Force said. Istanbul (AFP) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday expressed alarm over reports of a build-up of Russian troops in northern Syria near the Turkish border, saying such movements would not be tolerated."We have said this from the beginning: we won't tolerate such formations (in northern Syria) along the area stretching from the Iraqi border up to the Mediterranean," Erdogan told reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul.Britain-based monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had said that Russia had sent a number of engineers to the Syrian border town of Qamishli to strengthen the runway and increase the capacity of an airport there.Russia's reported move into Qamishli comes as Ankara and Moscow are experiencing their biggest crisis in years over the shooting down of a Russian war plane by Turkey on November 24."We maintain our sensitivities on this issue," added Erdogan, citing reports that Russia had deployed some 200 soldiers and stating that he would raise the issue Saturday in talks with visiting US Vice President Joe Biden.Observers have said that Russia, which has for years been at loggerheads with Turkey over the Syrian conflict, may want to refit the airport as a Russian base, as happened in Hmeimim in Latakia province.Qamishli lies just south of the Turkish border town of Nusaybin."I can say that Turkey is closely watching every military movement on its borders and especially the border with Syria," the government source told AFP, asking not to be named.- 'Prevent this formation' -The Turkish army has already reinforced security by digging trenches in the border zone, the Hurriyet daily said.It quoted Turkish security sources as saying that a Russian military delegation, headed by a general and including members of the Russian military intelligence service GRU, had flown into Qamishli on January 16 to inspect the airport.The Kremlin and Iran are the chief remaining allies of President Bashar al-Assad who Turkey wants to see ousted as the key to ending Syria's almost five year civil war.Turkey has repeatedly expressed alarm about Russia's deployment of troops to Syria which Moscow says is aimed at fighting jihadists but is widely seen as buttressing the Assad regime.Education Minister Nabi Avci, speaking in parliament, claimed Russia's forces in Qamishli were working with both the regime as well as Kurdish militia of the Democratic Union Party (PYD).The People's Protection Units (YPG) have established control over much over the northern Syrian border region in the past months after pushing out Islamic State (IS) jihadists.But Ankara accuses the PYD and YPG of being the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and has been alarmed by an apparent tightening of ties between Moscow and the Kurds after the plane downing."For us, there is no difference between PYD, YPG, PKK or Daesh (IS)," said Erdogan."We will discuss this with Biden tomorrow... DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Senior Saudi and Iranian figures clashed behind closed doors at a private meeting convened by the World Economic Forum in Davos this week to try to promote peace in Syria, participants said.The barbed exchange between Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif at an invitation-only meeting on Wednesday underlined the hostility between the two Gulf rivals, who are waging proxy wars in Syria, Yemen and Iraq.Riyadh broke off diplomatic relations and cut off trade and transport ties with Tehran two weeks ago after protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Iran. The protests erupted following the Saudi execution of a leading Shi'ite cleric that outraged predominantly Shi'ite Iranians.The standoff highlights some of the reasons U.S.-Russian-backed peace talks on Syria may not open as planned in Geneva next week. There is no agreement on who should represent opponents of the Syrian government, and Riyadh-backed rebels are demanding that Russia first stop air strikes in Syria.An official photographer snapped Faisal and Zarif shaking hands outside the room. The picture was not distributed and any warmth evaporated when they sat around the table with U.N. and other senior officials.
