World's oceans hit record-high July temperatures-AUG 10,26-Jessica Rawnsley
The
world's oceans hit their hottest ever recorded temperatures for July,
partly fuelled by developing El Niño conditions in the Pacific,
according to the EU's climate monitoring service. The average sea surface
temperature (SST) outside the world's polar regions - between 60
degrees north and 60 degrees south - was 20.96C last month, beating the
previous high of 20.89C, set in 2023.Last month was the joint
second-warmest July globally on record, with temperatures 1.47C above
the estimated pre-industrial average, according to the Copernicus
Climate Change Service.Meanwhile, Western Europe experienced its hottest
ever June and July, with prolonged hot and dry conditions fuelling
extreme wildfires across the region.Elsewhere, the UK is braced for its
fifth heatwave of the year this week, as persistent dry weather puts
further pressure on water supplies and could see more areas officially
declared in drought. What is El Niño and why could it mean record
temperatures? Rhine falls to record low levels as drought strains
Europe's rivers-Around Europe, sea surface temperatures in July reached
record highs along the Atlantic coast and in the western Mediterranean,
contributing to widespread strong and severe marine heatwaves.Sea
temperatures remained exceptionally high across much of the tropical
Pacific, where El Niño conditions are developing and forecast to
strengthen in the coming months.El Niño is a natural weather pattern in
the Pacific that combined with human-driven global warming can cause
temperature spikes and more extreme weather.Oceans are a vital regulator
of the climate, absorbing most of the excess heat generated by
greenhouse gas emissions and producing half of Earth's oxygen. The
greatest effect of ocean warming is on sea level rise. As seawater warms
it expands, and this thermal expansion accounts for roughly a third of
sea level rise recorded by scientists to date. That water encroaches on
low-lying coasts and island nations.Hotter seas are also driving longer
and fiercer marine heatwaves, which have bleached coral reefs on a mass
scale and decimated kelp forests and fisheries.Warmer ocean surfaces
also evaporate more heat and moisture into the air, intensifying
tropical storms and loading them with heavier rainfall.'Climate change
is intensifying heat extremes' Western Europe is experiencing an
exceptional run of extreme heat - with record-breaking temperatures in
June and July, and some areas facing their third or fourth heat wave
since May.The average temperature across western Europe for June and
July was 21.62C - 2.79C above average and the highest for the two-month
period."July 2026 was the third consecutive month of exceptional heat in
western Europe," said Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at
the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.Persistent
high-pressure systems trapped heat over the region, she said, while dry
soils reduced the ability to provide natural cooling."This is a clear
example of how climate change is intensifying heat extremes, with heat
and drought increasingly reinforcing one another," she added.France,
Spain, parts of Germany and the UK recorded exceptionally low rainfall
and/or soil moisture, while soil moisture levels across much of western
Europe were significantly lower than in 2022, when the region
experienced severe drought.River levels have been much lower than
average - in some places exceptionally low -with the Seine, Rhine and
Danube among those particularly affected.Low flows exacerbate pressure
on water supplies and irrigation, aquatic ecosystems, river transport
and energy production. Some rivers in Europe have recorded extremely low
water levels, including the Danube-The prolonged hot and dry conditions
have created favourable conditions for wildfires, with massive wildfires
raging across western Europe last month and "exceptional activity" in
terms of the area burned and smoke and emissions generated."Climate
change is increasingly bringing the kinds of hot and dry conditions that
favour large, high-intensity wildfires in southern Europe while
extended the fire season northwards," said Laurence Rouil, director of
the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service.Larger fires produce more
smoke and inject it higher into the atmosphere, allowing it to travel
much further, he said. That means countries that experience relatively
few wildfires could be increasingly affected by smoke traveling long
distances.Extreme weather 'new normal' In the UK, meanwhile, the
prolonged dry spell is increasing pressure on already-stretched water
supplies.England and Wales recorded their driest July since records
began 190 years ago, according to the Met Office, while large parts of
England and all of Wales have already been officially declared in
drought. The Environment Agency has warned that more areas of England
could be declared in drought if dry conditions persist.Weather that was
once considered extreme is becoming the "new normal", according to the
latest Met Office report on the UK's climate. Its latest assessment found
that the hottest day of the year in southern England is now 4.5C warmer
than it was between 1961 and 1990."We are right now living in a time of
historic and unprecedented change," said Mike Kendon, Met Office
climate information scientist, adding that "evidence shows the climate
of the 20th century has now gone".Scientists say El Niño may temporarily
push global temperatures even higher. Its effects are being felt
against a backdrop of man-made warming, particularly the burning of
fossil fuels. The world is now about 1.4C warmer on average than it was
in the late 19th Century.
China evacuates one million from homes as massive storm arrives-AUG 10,26-Kelly Ng
Chinese
authorities have evacuated more than a million people from their homes
in eastern China including the financial capital Shanghai, as Typhoon
Dolphin made landfall. The typhoon brought heavy rain and halted
transportation across the region. Nearly 1,000 flights were cancelled in
Shanghai alone on Monday. While authorities have downgraded Dolphin to a
tropical storm, they continue to warn of torrential rains, severe
flooding and the risk of landslides through to Wednesday as the storm
moves north.Chinese authorities had earlier issued their highest-level
red alert for Dolphin, which is the strongest storm to hit China this
year.It packed maximum wind speeds of 150km/h (94mph) when it first
slammed into Yuhuan in the Zhejiang province at 17:30 (09:30 GMT) on
Sunday before making a second landfall in the city of Wenzhou about an
hour later, meteorological authorities said.Heavy rain was forecast on
Monday for the provinces of Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu,
Zhejiang and the city of Shanghai.Governments have urged people to avoid
outdoor activities, while several top tourist attractions remain
closed, including parts of Disneyland and Legoland, and several viewing
platforms along the Bund in Shanghai.Footage on state media show
ground-floor businesses flooded in the former French Concession in
Shanghai, an area popular with tourists, and people wading through
ankle-deep waters.Several state media outlets have reported that a
nine-year-old boy from Wenling, Zhejiang is missing after being swept
into the sea. Chinese officials have not reported any casualties.Parts
of Zhejiang could receive 250mm to 500mm of rain over the next few days,
forecasters say.Authorities in Hangzhou, Zhejiang's capital city, have
waived parking fees in all public spaces for drivers seeking shelter
amid the strong winds and floodwaters.Elsewhere in the province, Wenzhou
authorities have relocated some 900,000 residents and opened more than
1,000 emergency shelters, while about 390,000 people have been evacuated
from their homes in the city of Taizhou. In the coastal province of
Fujian, maritime authorities have suspended dozens of passenger ferry
routes and halted more than 100 offshore construction projects. The storm
moved over a long distance of 6,000km before making landfall,
suggesting a lifespan of more than three times that of an average
typhoon, according to China's state broadcaster CCTV.It also has a
massive circulation size and intense rainfall capacity, CCTV
reported.Misinformation around the storm has apparently spread rapidly
on the Chinese internet, with state media reporting that two people have
been detained for distributing such content. One of them, a 60-year-old
man, created a fake video with AI that claimed someone in Shanghai had
fallen from a building during the storm.Another man, 32, had re-edited
storm footage posted by other social media users in a way that was
deemed as misleading.Dolphin brought torrential rains to the
Philippines, parts of northern Taiwan and Japan's Okinawa island before
bearing down on ChinaMore than 7,000 people are sheltering at evacuation
centres nationwide in the Philippines-Eight people have died in the
Philippines because of heavy monsoon rains brought on by Dolphin and
storms earlier in the week, says the Office of Civil Defence. More than
7,000 people are sheltering at evacuation centres nationwide. In Okinawa
in Japan, five elderly people suffered non-life-threatening injuries,
according to the prefectural government.Three of them fell because of
the strong winds, it said.Meanwhile in Hong Kong, weather observatory
posted a record high temperature of 36.9C on Sunday as the typhoon swept
warm air over the city.Typhoon season in the western Pacific typically
occurs between May and October, when typhoons are considered more
commonplace. This year is a strong El Niño year, which experts say means
typhoons can grow to be more intense.
China evacuates a million from homes as Typhoon Dolphin arrives-By Sarah Shamim-Published On 10 Aug 202610 Aug 2026
Provinces
in eastern China have been inundated with heavy rain and flooding
caused by Typhoon Dolphin, the strongest storm to make landfall in China
this year.Dolphin struck eastern China, including Shanghai, with winds
up to 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour), forcing more than one
million people to evacuate their homes. The storm has disrupted flights
and other transport while bringing heavy rain, flooding and the risk of
landslides across the region.About 40 percent of flights in Shanghai
were grounded on Monday due to the weather. After Dolphin made landfall
late on Sunday, it weakened to below cyclone strength and is forecast to
weaken further as it moves inland. Here is what we know:When and where
did Typhoon Dolphin make landfall? The typhoon made landfall in Yuhuan
in China’s Zhejiang province about 5:30pm (09:30 GMT) on Sunday,
according to China’s meteorological authorities. On Monday, Shanghai was
badly hit with residents circulating the hashtag “Shanghai turns into
the sea” on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.Last month, Typhoon
Bavi also made landfall in Zhejiang, causing the evacuation of 1.7
million people.Where is the storm moving, and how much damage will it
cause? Torrential rain was expected on Monday across Zhejiang, Shanghai,
northern Fujian, northeastern Jiangxi, central and southern Anhui and
much of Jiangsu.Parts of central and eastern Zhejiang could receive
250mm to 500mm (10 to 20 inches) of rain in all, according to
forecasters.China’s Ministry of Water Resources warned that the
Qiantang, Yong, Jiao and Shuiyang rivers could experience major flooding
while smaller rivers in the hardest hit areas could rise above warning
levels.Authorities also warned of a high risk of geological disasters in
parts of Zhejiang with residents in areas under a red mountain-torrent
warning told to follow local evacuation orders.Since making landfall,
Dolphin is forecast to track westwards before slowing over central and
southwestern China and gradually losing strength, Wang Haiping, chief
forecaster at the National Meteorological Centre, told state broadcaster
CCTV.The slower movement could prolong heavy rainfall and increase the
threat of flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas and
along smaller rivers. How have the authorities responded? The
authorities have warned of the risk of severe flooding and landslides as
the storm moves further inland and continues to bring heavy rain to
densely populated areas of eastern China.Shanghai evacuated at least
30,300 people while, in neighbouring Zhejiang province, the city of
Wenzhou relocated more than 900,000 residents and opened more than 1,000
emergency shelters.Authorities also evacuated about 390,000 people in
the Zhejiang city of Taizhou before Saturday evening. In Fujian province,
about 98,900 people were evacuated from high-risk areas after
authorities raised the typhoon emergency response to Level III, the
state news agency Xinhua reported.Authorities moved offshore workers to
safety, ordered vessels back to port and stepped up inspections of
reservoirs, mountain streams, landslide-prone areas, construction sites
and tourist locations.People have been told to avoid going out of doors
and tourist attractions, including parts of Disneyland and Legoland, and
viewing platforms along the Bund in Shanghai have been closed. In
Hangzhou, Zhejiang’s capital, parking fees in public spaces have been
waived for drivers needing to abandon vehicles to seek shelter.Transport
has been widely disrupted across the region. About 1,400 flights have
been cancelled from Shanghai.Fujian maritime authorities suspended 55
coastal passenger ferry routes, halted 115 offshore construction
projects and moved 290 construction vessels to sheltered
waters.Shanghai’s Yangshan port also cleared ships from its berths and
moved more than 500 small and medium-sized vessels to shelter before the
storm. How strong is Typhoon Dolphin, and where did it come from?
Dolphin originally grew out of a tropical depression on July 26, moving
at 45km/h (30mph) over the open waters of the Central Pacific Ocean as
it embarked on a journey of several thousand kilometres.Over the course
of its journey, Dolphin strengthened to a tropical storm and then to a
severe tropical storm before burgeoning into a typhoon and then a very
strong typhoon on July 28.As it came ashore in China on Monday, the
storm packed maximum sustained winds of 151km/h (93mph) near its centre,
equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest category of
hurricane.Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are all essentially the same
thing. The main difference is where they originate. All three are storm
systems with winds exceeding 118km/h (73mph).Typhoons occur in the
northwestern Pacific Ocean and frequently hit the Philippines and Japan.
Typhoon season is most common between May and October, but the storms
can form year-round. The strength of a typhoon has various
classification scales with the most severe storms named super
typhoons.Cyclones occur in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, often
impacting countries from Australia all the way to Mozambique. Cyclone
season typically runs from November to April.Hurricanes occur in the
Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Pacific and often affect the East Coast of
the United States, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The strength of
a hurricane is measured on a wind scale from 1 to 5. A Category 1
hurricane will bring sustained winds of 119-153km/h (74-95mph) whereas a
Category 5 storm can exceed 252km/h (157mph).Different agencies use
different wind scales. China does not use the Saffir-Simpson hurricane
category scale in its official domestic forecasting or national
standards. Will Typhoon Dolphin become stronger or weaker now? Since
making landfall on Sunday, Dolphin has weakened and is expected to
further weaken. As of Monday, Dolphin is a remnant low, or a weakened,
post-tropical cyclone that has lost the organised thunderstorm activity
required to qualify as a tropical storm. It is expected to continue to
dissipate and lose energy on Tuesday to 35km/h by 17:00 GMT.Where else
has Typhoon Dolphin hit? The typhoon battered the outer Japanese
Ogasawara Islands, also called the Bonin Islands – the first part of
Japan it reached – with strong winds on August 4.Dolphin then swept
through Japan’s southern Okinawa prefecture over the weekend, injuring
at least six people and cutting power to more than 50,000 buildings. The
outer bands of Dolphin brought heavy rain to northern Taiwan, including
the capital, Taipei, from Saturday. Dozens of ferry services were
suspended, and more than 180 flights were cancelled as the storm brought
strong winds and downpours. In the Philippines, Dolphin intensified
seasonal monsoon rains that triggered flooding and landslides in parts
of the country.Five people were rescued and seven were still missing
after a landslide struck three houses in the northern mountain resort
city of Baguio on Sunday, according to officials.Flooding also affected
large parts of the main northern island of Luzon, including the densely
populated Manila metropolitan region, displacing more than 12,000 people
and forcing several northern cities and towns to close schools on
Friday and Saturday. The monsoon rains followed a tropical storm that
killed at least six people last week, including four people killed in a
landslide and rockslide in the provinces of Benguet and Rizal,
Philippine officials said. Why is this storm called Typhoon Dolphin? The
typhoon has been named after Hong Kong’s Chinese white
dolphins.Individual hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are named by the
Typhoon Committee at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which
maintains premade, rotating lists of names. For hurricanes originating in
the Atlantic Ocean, these lists comprise typically male or female first
names that are easy to remember. The WMO’s lists of names for the
western North Pacific’s storms include local animals, plants and
cultural items. Dolphin was Hong Kong’s contribution.Where to track
Dolphin-You can track Dolphin on Zoom Earth, an online platform with
satellite imagery that shows weather patterns and is useful for tracking
storms.

At
least 47 dead after 7.4-magnitude earthquake hits western Colombia-By
Manuel Rueda, Astrid Suárez And Megan Janetsky The Associated
Press-Posted August 10, 2026 12:18 pm
At least 47 people were
killed and dozens of buildings collapsed in cities across western
Colombia on Monday after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the
South American nation. The quake trapped residents under debris, leaving
more injured and forcing people to evacuate their homes as far as the
capital of Bogotá.The epicenter was in San Jose Del Palmar, a community
of about 4,800 people in the Choco region about 250 miles (400
kilometers) west of Bogota, the U.S. Geological Survey and Colombia’s
counterpart reported. The USGS said it struck at a depth of 66 miles
(107 kilometers). The quake also was felt in neighboring Ecuador and
Panama, though minimal damage was reported there.Local officials
confirmed that at least 18 people had been killed in the city of
Pereira, two in the city of Manizales, and 27 people in the Valle de
Cauca department, where Colombia’s third-biggest city, Cali, is
located. The quake left cities across the west of the country — Pereira,
Quibdo, Cali and Manizales — ravaged. A mix of residents and search
teams picked through the rubble of collapsed buildings amid concerns by
authorities of aftershocks. Colombia’s interior minister said more than
20 municipalities across the country had been hit.People stand outside
their homes after a quake was felt in Bogota, Colombia, Monday, Aug. 10,
2026.Jorge Moncayo, a 64-year-old taxi driver in Cali, said he saw
plumes of dust shoot up across the city from his home in hills of the
city as buildings collapsed. Residents in the city and rescue workers
were searching the rubble for survivors.“My entire house shook,” he
said. “I’ve never lived through such a powerful earthquake.”Colombia’s
Geological Service said Monday that it had been “the highest magnitude
earthquake registered in Colombia in the last decade” and that it had
been followed by two 2.8 and 4.8 magnitude aftershocks. Authorities also
reported that flights were suspended in the airports of Manizales,
Quibdo, Armenia, Cartago y Buenaventura and Pereira. The earthquakes left
many in the Andean nation unnerved after two back-to-back quakes
devastated neighboring Venezuela in late June, destroyed hundreds of
buildings and killed more than 5,000 people. At the same time the quake
brought down buildings in Colombia, desperate families in Venezuela
continued to search the ruins for the bodies of their loved ones.In
Pereira, photos and videos published by local media showed pieces of the
airport ceiling falling down on travelers taking shelter and screaming,
and people running through rubble in a panic.Pereira’s mayor, Mauricio
Salazar, told a local radio station that at least 18 people had died and
that many more were trapped under “a massive quantity of collapsed
buildings.”In nearby Manizales, a city nestled in the coffee-producing
mountains of Colombia, one of the towers of the neo-Gothic cathedral
collapsed and fell on the nave. Jorge Eduardo Rojas, the mayor of
Manizales said two people had died in the city “because of the quake”
and asked residents to stay outside in case of aftershocks.Authorities
in the rural state of Choco, the epicenter of the quake, reported
injured people and damaged buildings in the capital, but provided few
details. In Cali, a city 2 million people, Mayor Alejandro Eder said that
residents were trapped in at least 19 buildings that had
collapsed.Small earthquakes, known as “temblores,” are common in central
and western Colombia, but those above 6.0 magnitude are rare. In 1999, a
6.2 magnitude quake near the city of Armenia, killed more than 1,100
people.Colombia’s newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella
said Monday that he had personally taken charge of the government’s
response to the emergency in San José del Palmar following the
earthquake that struck the country.“You are not alone. The state is
present and taking action,” he said.
Matthew 8:1-4-King James Version
8:1 When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4
And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew
thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a
testimony unto them.

HERE
AT THE VILLAGE IN HANOVER I AM A BIT OF A BRAT TO THE LADY WORKERS.WHEN
I AM NOT WORKING ON MY STORIES FOR MY SITES, RACE PREDICTIONS OR HOCKEY
STATS, OR YAHTZEE WITH MY TWIN SISTER.AT MEAL TIMES WHILE THE LADIES ON
THE COFFEE CART OR COLD DRINKS. I MOVE MY CUP WHILE THEY POUR THE DRINK
TO PRETEND I WANT THEM TO SPILL MY DRINK. OK SO SAT AUG 8,26. I WENT
FOR LUNCH IN THE MEAL ROOM. AND THE COFFEE LADY JUST HAPPENED TO BE AT
MY TABLE WHEN I CAME IN. SHE SAID STAN. WOULD YOU LIKE A COFFEE. I
SAID.NO, COULD I PLEASE JUST HAVE HOT WATER IN MY CUP. SINCE I HAVE HOT
CHOCOLATE POWDER IN MY ROOM. AND I LIKE IT FOR A CHANGE INSTEAD OF
COFFEE. OK SO I TAKE THE LID OFF MY CUP. AND SHE STARTS POURING THE HOT
WATER IN IT. I WAS A BRAT AND STARTED MOVING THE CUP SLOWLY BACK AND
FORTH. BUT THEN I DONE A BIG PUSH. AND THE SCALDING HOT WATER WITH STEAM
FLOWING FROM IT. MISSED THE CUP AND ALL OVER MY LEFT HAND. THE SCALDING
WATER DID COVER THE WHOLE LEFT HAND. AND THE COFFEE GAL WENT AND GOT A
TOWEL TO CLEAN UP ON THE TABLE ALL THE HOT WATER THAT SPILT. MY HAND WAS
INSTANTLY RED AND SORE. THE WORKER SAID YOUR HAND WILL HAVE BLISTERS
FROM THE HOT WATER. I THEN ATE MY MEAL AND WENT BACK TO MY ROOM. MY HAND
WAS STILL SORE. SO I DECIDED TO HAVE AN AFTERNOON SLEEP BEFORE I GET
READY TO DO THE MOHAWK RESULTS AT 5.45PM (PREGAME SHOW) AND 6.40PM (THE
1ST RACE STARTS). SO FROM 1PM TO 5.30PM. I SLEPT. I GOT UP AND PUT MY
PREDICTIONS ON MY COMPUTER. TO GET READY FOR THE PRE GAME RACE SHOW. I
NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT MY SCOLDED HAND TILL THE RACES WERE OVER
SATURDAY NIGHT. AFTER THE RACES I SUDDENLY JUST REMERED. MY SCOLDING HOT
WATER HAND HAD NO REDNESS, NO PAIN OR NO BLISTERING. I SAID TO MYSELF.
THIS HAS TO BE A MIRACLE OF HEALING BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. THERES NO PAIN.
MY HAND WAS SORE WHEN I FELL TO SLEEP. BUT NO SORENESS AT ALL NOW. OF
COURSE I GIVE GOD ALL THE PRAISE AND GLORY FOR THIS HEALING MIRACLE.AS
WE CHRISTIANS SHOULD ALL REALIZE. GOD KNOWS EVERY THING THAT WILL HAPPEN
TO US BEFORE IT HAPPENS. AND EVEN WHAT WE SAY AND OUR THOUGHT BEFORE WE
DO THEM.SO ALL I CAN FIGURE IS JESUS INTERCEEDED FOR ME TO THE
FATHER.AND THE FATHER ALLOWED THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HEAL MY SCOLDED WATER
HAND. SO I COULD GIVE THE FATHER GOD, JESUS THE JEWISH SON AND THE HOLY
SPIRIT ALL THE PRAISE AND GLORY FOR THE MIRACLE HEALING. AND I GLADLY DO
GIVE OUR GOD (TRINITY) ALL THE PRAISE AND GLORY FOR THE MIRACLE
HEALING. NO REDNESS, NO BLISTERING ON MY LEFT HAND.AND NORMAL NOT SORE
AT ALL. BUT I WILL NOT BE PLAYING WITH GIVING THE COFFEE GALS A MOVING
CUP AGAIN. I PLAYED WITH SCOLDING WATER. AND IT NEVER PAYED.I JUST GIVE
GOD ALL THE PRAISE AND GLORY FOR THE MIRACLE HEALING AGAIN.THIS MORNING
THE SAME COFFEE GAL WAS ON. AND I TOLD HER THIS IS A MIRACLE NO LOK OF
ANY SCALDING AT ALL. SHE BRUSHED OFF THE MIRACLE. BUT SAID YOU'VE GOT
TOUGH SKIN.
