Thousands of Israelis gathered around the country on Monday evening at the end of the second consecutive day of protests in favor of a hostage-release ceasefire deal. The Hamas terror group indicated Monday that it murdered the six hostages whose bodies were recovered by the IDF from a tunnel in southern Gaza’s Rafah over the weekend to prevent Israeli troops from rescuing them.
In a statement, the spokesman for the military wing of Hamas said that following Israel’s successful hostage rescue in Nuseirat in June, new protocols were given to terrorists guarding the abductees that they were to follow should Israeli troops approach.“We say to everyone clearly that after the Nuseirat incident, new instructions were issued to the mujahideen assigned to guard the prisoners regarding dealing with them if the occupation army approached their place of detention,” said Hudhaifa Kahlout, known by the nom de guerre Abu Obeida.Abu Obeida did not provide details regarding the exact nature of the instructions. GENEVA, Switzerland — UN experts voiced alarm Monday at a surge in executions in Iran last month that pushed the country’s total so far this year to over 400.At least 81 people were put to death in Iran in August alone, significantly more than the 45 reported in July, a group of 11 independent United Nations rights experts said in a statement.The reported number of executions since the start of 2024 rose above 400, including those of 15 women, they said.“We are deeply concerned by this sharp rise in executions,” said the experts, who are appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, but do not speak on behalf of the United Nations.Iran executes more people per year than any other nation except China, according to rights groups including Amnesty International.The UN experts, including the special rapporteurs on the rights situation in Iran and on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions, said 41 of the executions last month were of people convicted of drug offenses.“Executions for drug offenses violate international standards,” they said.The experts lamented a substantial rise in executions for drug offenses in Iran since 2021, with more than 400 drug-related executions carried out last year alone.They also said they had received reports indicating that death penalty trials in Iran often fail to meet due-process guarantees.They pointed to the case of Reza Rasaei, a Kurdish protester, who was executed on August 6, for the murder of an Islamic Revolution Guards Corps member at an event where he had brandished a sign reading: “Women, Life, Freedom.”His conviction was based on a confession reportedly obtained through torture, and despite co-defendants retracting their testimonies implicating him in the murder and forensic evidence challenging his involvement, the experts said.“Reports of serious violations of fair trial and due process rights mean that the death penalty as it is currently practiced in the Islamic Republic of Iran amounts to unlawful execution,” they said.The experts said they were “extremely concerned that innocent individuals may have been executed” and called for a halt to executions.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the IDF to prepare for the possibility that it will be required to take over the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza from international welfare organizations, Channel 12 reported on Tuesday.According to the report, Netanyahu recently instructed the IDF to do the necessary staff work to examine the logistics, operational mechanisms and manpower required for the task, which until now has been carried out by international aid organizations.Netanyahu, in answer to a question at his press conference on Monday, said that Israel was “very close” to dismantling Hamas militarily, “but we still need to deprive it of its capacity to rule. That means we need to find an alternative for all or a considerable part of the distribution of humanitarian aid. We are working on that now, and we will achieve that, because it is part of the ‘day after.’”In recent consultations, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Salvagers abandoned an effort to tow away a burning oil tanker in the Red Sea targeted by Yemen’s Houthi rebels as it “was not safe to proceed,” a European Union naval mission said Tuesday.The announcement by the EU’s Operation Aspides leaves the Sounion stranded in the Red Sea, threatening to spill its 1 million barrels of oil.While a major spill has yet to occur, the incident threatens to become one of the worst yet in the Iranian-backed terror group’s campaign that has disrupted the $1 trillion in goods that pass through the Red Sea each year over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. It also has halted some aid shipments to conflict-ravaged Sudan and Yemen.“The private companies responsible for the salvage operation have concluded that the conditions were not met to conduct the towing operation and that it was not safe to proceed,” the EU mission said, without elaborating. “Alternative solutions are now being explored by the private companies.”The EU mission did not immediately respond to questions from The Associated Press about the announcement. The safety issue could be from the fire still burning aboard the vessel — NASA fire satellites detected a blaze in the area the Sounion was anchored on Tuesday.Meanwhile, there’s the threat of attacks by the Houthis, who on Monday targeted two other oil tankers traveling through the Red Sea. The Houthis have suggested they’ll allow a salvage operation to take place, but critics say the rebels have used the threat of an environmental disaster previously involving another oil tanker off Yemen to extract concessions from the international community.The Houthis initially attacked the Greek-flagged tanker on August 21 with small arms fire, projectiles and a drone boat. A French destroyer operating as part of Operation Aspides rescued the Sounion’s crew of 25 Filipinos and Russians, as well as four private security personnel, after they abandoned the vessel and took them to nearby Djibouti.Last week, the Houthis released footage showing they planted explosives on board the Sounion and ignited them in a propaganda video, something the Houthis had done before in their campaign.The Houthis have targeted more than 80 merchant vessels with missiles and drones since Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza began in October following the terror group’s October 7 attack. They seized one vessel and sank two in the campaign that also killed four sailors. Other missiles and drones have either been intercepted by a US-led coalition in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets, which have included Western military vessels as well.The terror group maintains that it targets ships linked to Israel, the US or the UK to force an end to the war in Gaza. However, many of the ships attacked have little or no connection to the conflict, including some bound for Iran.The US State Department has warned a spill from the Sounion could be “four times the size of the Exxon Valdez disaster” in 1989 off Alaska. However, it remains unclear if America itself will get involved in the effort to salvage the vessel.Two US aircraft carriers, the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Abraham Lincoln, along with their carrier groups, are in the Gulf of Oman to counter a threatened Iranian retaliation against Israel for its purported role in the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.There are no American vessels known to be in the Red Sea at the moment as the EU mission has taken charge after the Sounion attack. The USS Dwight D. Throughout its war against Israel in Gaza, Hamas has refrained from publishing the names of its slain operatives, according to a report published Tuesday that delved into the terror group’s intimidation campaign aimed at barring Gazans from any mention of such fatalities.The report, published by the Haaretz daily newspaper, stated that despite no formal ban having been implemented that would prevent Gazans from sharing the names of terror operatives killed by Israeli troops, an unwritten rule upheld in the Palestinian enclave prevents them from doing so.Citing unnamed residents of the Gaza Strip, the report stated that the unofficial rule is implemented to such a degree that even family members of slain operatives will refrain from public mourning.“There is fear to talk publicly about Hamas operatives, including operatives who have been killed,” one Gaza resident told Haaretz, explaining that there was fear of being branded a “traitor” or “collaborator” and of being harassed by the terror group.The report comes in the midst of Israel’s ongoing war against the terror organization following the October 7 onslaught on southern Israel that left 1,200 dead and 251 taken hostage — and as Israel faces heavy international criticism over the level of reported civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.The resident, identified by Haaretz under the pseudonym Issam, said that since the start of the war with Israel, the pressure from Hamas not to publish the names of its operatives has increased significantly, and to do so would be considered treasonous.As such, news of their deaths are only passed on by word of mouth, he said.“The prevailing assumption on the streets is that if the names of slain gunmen are published, people around the world will identify less strongly with the Gazans’ suffering, and this will give legitimacy to bombing Gaza,” a second resident, pseudonymized as Adnan, was quoted as saying. “As long as there are clips and stories about the civilian population, nobody says a thing. But if anyone dares to criticize Hamas or to mention the name of a slain fighter, they will call them a traitor and treat them as such.”While many in Gaza disagree with Hamas’s policy of obfuscation, they don’t have any real choice but to go along with it, Adnan said.“We’re in a state of war and the population is suffering,” he explained. “A lot of people are having a very difficult time and they need support and assistance. There is no desire to get into it with Hamas.”The lack of clarity that shrouds Hamas’s Gaza operations is in direct contrast to the terror group’s strategy in the West Bank, where it proudly publishes the names of its members killed by the IDF. It is also in direct opposition to the strategy of Hezbollah in Lebanon, which maintains a detailed list of that terror group’s fatalities in the near-daily cross-border skirmishes since October.The war with Israel is “a war of survival also for Hamas’s image around the world,” a third source told Haaretz. “When armed operatives aren’t mentioned, when their deaths aren’t mentioned, they don’t exist in the discourse.”In addition to fear of harassment at the hands of Hamas should a family member of a slain operative publicly share information about their death, one Gaza resident said the family members also fear harassment from Israeli forces.Speaking to Haaretz, Bushra (not her real name) said that the fog is so dense that even immediate relatives of Hamas operatives may not know what their loved ones are doing, even after they are killed in the fighting.“The families are displaced, moving from place to place. The children who are Hamas operatives leave their homes ahead of time and leave no information about their whereabouts,” she said. “The news that they’ve been killed spreads from one person to another until it reaches their parents.”Despite this, the report said Gazans still know how to get by under such circumstances, and have their own system of finding out when a terror operative has been killed, including by scouring social media or messaging applications.The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 40,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, yet the ministry’s toll cannot be verified, nor does it differentiate between civilians and fighters.Israel, for its part, says it has killed some 17,000 combatants in battle and another 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7. It has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques.In June, an Associated Press analysis of Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry data showed that the proportion of Palestinian women and children being killed in the Israel-Hamas war appeared to have declined sharply.This trend coincided with Israel’s changing battlefield tactics and contradicted the Hamas-run ministry’s own public statements, and was considered significant because the death rate for women and children is the best available proxy for civilian casualties in the conflict.In October, when the war began, the purported death rate of women and children was above 60 percent. In April, it was below 40%. Yet the shift went unnoticed for months by the United Nations and much of the media, and the Gazan health ministry made no effort to set the record straight.
