Chile expressed “growing worry” on Thursday over escalating violence in
the Gaza Strip after several months of war between Israel and Hamas in a
referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over possible
crimes.Since the October 7 terror onslaught carried out by Hamas in
southern Israel and the subsequent war that Israel launched to eliminate
the Gaza-ruling terror group, there has been increased international
alarm and scrutiny over the mounting Palestinian death toll.Amid the
brutal violence enacted by Hamas across more than 20 communities on
October 7, some 1,200 people were slaughtered, mostly civilians, and
around 240 others were seized as hostages.In Gaza, the Hamas-run health
ministry has said that more than 24,000 people have been killed since
the start of the war, also mostly civilians. These figures cannot be
independently verified, however, and are believed to include both
civilians and Hamas members killed in Gaza, including as a consequence

Palestinian rights groups alike have criticized Khan and the ICC since
the probe was launched in 2021, and more recently since October 7, both
claiming that the international body unfairly favors the other.Israel
has slammed the probe, launched by Khan’s predecessor Fatou Bensouda, as
biased, due to its start date of June 13, 2014, one day after
Palestinian terrorists kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers in
the Gush Etzion area of the West Bank.As a result, the probe will not
look into the killing of the three teenagers, and will only examine
Israel’s response.Palestinian human rights groups refused to meet with
Khan in December, declaring that he was “not handling his work in an
independent and professional manner.”

Tehran's top diplomat said on Wednesday that his country's armed forces targeted an "Iranian terrorist group" in Pakistan the day before, after Islamabad said the strike killed two children."None of the nationals of the friendly and brotherly country of Pakistan were targeted by Iranian missiles and drones," Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland."The so-called Jaish al-Adl group, which is an Iranian terrorist group, was targeted," he added.The raid came late on Tuesday after Tehran also launched attacks in Iraq and Syria against what it called "anti-Iranian terrorist groups".Pakistan denounced the strike near the nations' shared border, recalled its ambassador from Iran and blocked Tehran's envoy from returning to Islamabad.A few hours before the strike, Pakistani caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar met Amir-Abdollahian on the sidelines of the Davos Forum.Amir-Abdollahian said Iran's attack on "Pakistan's soil" was a response to the Jaish al-Adl group's recent deadly attacks on the Islamic republic, particularly on the city of Rask in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan.At attack on January 10 on a police station in the city killed a policeman, almost a month after 11 police officers were killed in a similar attack in the area.Both attacks were claimed by Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice), a Sunni Muslim extremist group that was formed in 2012 and is blacklisted by Iran as a "terrorist" group."The group has taken shelter in some parts of Pakistan's Balochistan province," Amir-Abdollahian said, adding that "we've talked with Pakistani officials several times on this matter".The foreign minister said Iran respected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Pakistan but would not "allow the country's national security to be compromised or played with".

WASHINGTON (AP) — The US military fired another wave of ship- and submarine-launch missile strikes against Houthi-controlled sites Wednesday, US Central Command said, marking the fourth time in days it has directly targeted the group in Yemen as violence that ignited in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war continues to spill over in the Middle East.The strikes were launched from the Red Sea and hit 14 missiles that the command deemed an “imminent threat.” The strikes followed an official announcement Wednesday that the US has put the Houthis back on its list of specially designated global terrorists. The sanctions that come with the formal designation are meant to sever violent extremist groups from their sources of financing.“Forces conducted strikes on 14 Iran-backed Houthi missiles that were loaded to be fired in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen,” Central Command said in a statement posted on X late Wednesday. “These missiles on launch rails presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region and could have been fired at any time, prompting US forces to exercise their inherent right and obligation to defend themselves.”Despite the sanctions and military strikes, including a large-scale operation Friday carried out by US and British warships and warplanes that hit more than 60 targets across Yemen, the Houthis are continuing their harassment campaign of commercial and military ships. And so we’re going to continue to work with our partners in the region to prevent those attacks or deter those attacks in the future,” Ryder said.There have been several incidents since the Friday joint operations. The Houthis fired an anti-ship cruise missile toward a US Navy destroyer over the weekend, but the ship shot it down. Health Canada has approved the first vaccine for
respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for adults age 60 and over, but it may
only be available in "limited" quantities for this fall's respiratory
virus season.RSV is a common but highly contagious virus that appears
like a common cold for most people. In more vulnerable populations, RSV
can cause bronchiolitis — the inflammation of the small airways in the
lung — or pneumonia, say experts. Health Canada approved manufacturer
GSK's new vaccine called Arexvy on Friday. In an email to CBC News, the
federal health body confirmed that it anticipates a limited supply of
the vaccine will be available for the upcoming RSV season. This news
comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave their
approval for the vaccine in May. "It will be a game changer in
significantly preventing severe illness and death, especially amongst
older Canadians," said Dr. Samir Sinha, the director of geriatrics at
Sinai Health and University Health Network in Toronto. Doctors have been
calling for an RSV vaccine for seniors because although the virus is
common, people who are older are more likely to become severely ill and
need hospitalization. First RSV vaccine approved in U.S. after decades
of attempts-"This has been decades long in the making," Dr. Isaac
Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist with the University Health
Network in Toronto, said of the vaccine's approval. "It's a very tough
virus, it can have negative health impacts. It [can] lead to
hospitalization, intensive care unit stays, even death," Bogoch added.
"And it's wonderful to have a vaccine that … appears to significantly
reduce the risk of severe lower respiratory tract disease." Dr. Samir

experts-It's unclear how many people 60 and older in Canada are
hospitalized or die from the illness, as experts say it's not properly
tracked.According to Sinha, Canada isn't properly screening for RSV and
the illness itself can be hard to detect — making the exact burden
unclear. But he estimates that it can be similar to the rates of
hospitalizations and death seen with influenza — if not worse as the
virus can spread more rapidly and symptoms may take a few days to
develop.In Canada, 12,200 people are hospitalized and 3,500 die from
influenza annually. Vaccine offers more than 80% protection, says GSK-In
a news release issued Friday, GSK said a randomized clinical trial
showed the vaccine has an 82 per cent efficacy in preventing lower
respiratory tract disease caused by RSV, compared to seniors who got a
placebo.The company said it also showed a 94 per cent efficacy in
preventing the illness in seniors with underlying medical conditions."I
think this vaccine will go a long way based on the results that are
available … the vaccine appeared to be safe and appeared to provide very
significant protection," said Bogoch. THE DOSE-It took 60 years, but
RSV vaccines are just around the corner — and could make a big
difference-He added that if the infection spreads to the lower
respiratory tract, it can make it hard for people to breathe so that
they need "supplemental oxygen." This is when people typically end up in
hospital. Sinha said RSV infections can also "trigger other problems in
the body," like a bacterial or viral pneumonia. "So it's not
necessarily that if you get RSV you're going to die of that infection,
but what you might do is trigger other heart or other lung complications
that then can actually cost you your life potentially," he said.
National guidance for the shot expected in 2024.RSV season in Canada
usually starts in the late fall and lasts until spring. Health Canada
said the vaccine is a single dose injection, but it's unclear whether
people will need to get the vaccine every year or a booster. St.
Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton infectious disease physician Dr. Zain
Chagla said available data suggests that people who get the vaccine will
be protected for up to two years. But beyond that, he said further
research is needed. "Hopefully this [vaccine] gets in before RSV season,
but if an older adult accesses the vaccine afterwards, they still could
get a couple years benefit," he said. In an email to CBC News, Health
Canada said that guidance from the National Advisory Committee on
Immunization (NACI) on the use of the vaccine is expected next year.
Drug to help prevent serious RSV illness in babies approved by Health
Canada-It said that based on consultations with Canadian experts, NACI
has "first prioritized (and is currently developing) advice for RSV
products to protect infants before developing advice for older
adults."It added that it will be up to individual provinces and
territories to decide if they will work Arexvy into their existing RSV
programs — and if so, it will work with them individually. Experts like
Sinha say they also hope the Canadian government considers covering the
cost of the vaccine as that can often be a "barrier to access,"
especially in more vulnerable populations. Sinha said that as soon as
the vaccine is made available, he'll be recommending that all his
patients get the shot. What about kids? Last winter was an especially
bad season of RSV in the country, specifically for young kids. In
addition to seniors, infants are at a higher risk of getting very sick
with RSV. There is no RSV vaccine for children, but there are two kinds
of antibody injections that can be given to high-risk babies to help
prevent serious illness. One of them, palivizumab, has often been given
to babies who were born prematurely – but it needs to be injected about
once a month during RSV season to stay effective. A new antibody drug –
nirsevimab, also known by the brand name Beyfortus – was approved by
Health Canada in April. Nirsevimab only requires one injection to
protect babies during the RSV season. It's not yet known how widely it
will be recommended for babies in Canada this fall. On Thursday, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the U.S. recommended
that babies born just before or during the RSV season, as well as
babies who are less than eight months old before the season starts,
should get the nirsevimab shot. The CDC also recommended that the shot
should be given to some eight to 19-month-old babies who are at higher
risk of getting seriously ill from the virus.

The Shin Bet security agency on Monday revealed attempts by Iranian intelligence services to spy on Israeli defense officials and gather information on civilians by using fake social media pages related to the ongoing war and the hostages held by terrorists in the Gaza Strip.According to the Shin Bet, Iranian operatives, using fake online profiles, tasked Israelis with photographing the residences of Israeli defense officials and other officials who appear frequently in the media and speak out publicly against Iran.Using fictitious social media pages and websites, the Iranian operatives also initiated gatherings near the homes of the families of the hostages kidnapped by Hamas and had bouquets of flowers and messages sent to their homes, the Shin Bet said.The agency said that the Iranian operatives had taken advantage of the protests in support of the hostages by having Israelis hang signs relating to the issue that had been written by them, as well as asking them to photograph the demonstrators.The pages also asked Israelis to fill out surveys, which would require victims to give out personal information. The Shin Bet said this was an attempt to collect further information on Israeli civilians, to later use them to carry out various tasks.The social media profiles — on Instagram, Telegram and TikTok — included pages posing as those of far-right activists and supporters of releasing the hostages, as well as a page named Kan+, impersonating the Kan public broadcaster.The operation revealed on Monday was run by the same Iranian network behind attempts uncovered last month to recruit Israelis over social media to carry out spying missions, including an assassination, in exchange for money.In that operation, individuals affiliated with Iranian security services contacted Israelis on various platforms and sparked an initial conversation using various deceptions. They then asked their marks to perform tasks such as photographing various sites and verifying addresses.The attempts to recruit the Israelis are a “well-known method of operation of the Iranian security agencies,” the Shin Bet explained.It added that since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip in October, the agency has identified that “the activity efforts of Iranian security forces have greatly intensified, while using digital space for the purposes of intimidation, conveying messages or advancing terror activity.”“Its purpose is to assist Hamas in its war and to damage Israel’s national resilience and war effort, sowing demoralization and deepening social divisions,” the agency said.The plans recently uncovered by the Shin Bet are not the first instances of Iranian operatives trying to target Israelis via social media.In July of last year, the Shin Bet said it had uncovered an Iranian phishing campaign against Israeli civilians, mostly targeting state employees and researchers, in a bid to obtain intelligence on state policy.According to the agency, Iranian operatives would contact Israeli targets on LinkedIn while posing as acquaintances, and the conversation would move to an email, where the operatives would either invite them to a conference by sending them a document with further details or sharing a research paper.In 2021, something similar was attempted, and Iranian operatives were found to have attempted to lure Israeli academics, business people and former defense officials abroad, in an effort to kidnap or otherwise harm them.At the time, the Shin Bet said the operatives used spoofed emails, pretending to be academics, journalists, businessmen and philanthropists.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

An elderly woman was killed and at least 17 people were injured, including at least seven children and teenagers, in a multipronged Palestinian car-ramming and stabbing terror attack in the central Israel city of Ra’anana early on Monday afternoon.During the attack, the perpetrators — two West Bank Palestinians working in Israel illegally — seized at least three vehicles and rammed pedestrians in several locations in the city, also stabbing one or more of their victims, according to police, medics, and eyewitnesses.Meir Hospital said a woman in her 70s, who arrived in critical condition, succumbed to her wounds. She was not immediately named.The two suspects were named as Ahmed Zidat, 25, and Mahmoud Zidad, 44, both residents of the southern West Bank town of Bani Naim, close to Hebron. Houthi rebels fired a missile, striking a US-owned ship Monday just off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden, less than a day after they launched an anti-ship cruise missile toward an American destroyer in the Red Sea, officials said.The attack on the Gibraltar Eagle, though not immediately claimed by the Houthis, further escalates tensions gripping the Red Sea after American-led strikes on the rebels. The Israel Defense Forces on Monday began to withdraw its 36th Division from Gaza for an R&R and training period, leaving three other divisions fighting Hamas in the Strip.The withdrawal of the division comes as part of the IDF’s plans for a long war against Hamas, as well as a potential escalation in the fighting against the Lebanese Hezbollah terror group in northern Israel, while maintaining the troops’ competence.The division’s units will be given a short break, then will return for a training period, after which the IDF will decide if and where to redeploy them based to its latest assessments.Over the past 80 days, the 36th Division operated in Gaza City’s Zeitoun, Shati, Shejaiya, and Rimal neighborhoods, where the IDF dismantled all of Hamas’s battalions. The Israel Defense Forces has confirmed the deaths of 25 of those still held by Hamas, citing intelligence and findings obtained by troops operating in Gaza.Israel also believes that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is hiding in a tunnel somewhere in Khan Younis.
