Tens of thousands flee Aleppo after Russian bombing-By EUOBSERVER-feb 5,16

Today, 09:09-Tens of thousands of Syrians streamed towards Turkey on Friday as regime troops launched a major Russian-backed offensive around opposition-held Aleppo. Some 300,000 people are thought to be trapped in the city. Turkey's prime minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, warned that up to 70,000 people were headed towards his country escaping fighting.

Sweden expects 70-140,000 asylum seekers-By EUOBSERVER-feb 5,16

Today, 09:06-Between 70,000 and 140,000 people could seek asylum in Sweden in 2016 depending on border controls, the migration agency said. Sweden has seen a slowdown in new arrivals seeking international protection since it introduced last month photo identification checks on trains, bus and ferry passengers entering via Denmark and Germany.

Transport to lose billions from border checks By Nikolaj Nielsen-feb 5,16-euobserver

BRUSSELS, Today, 17:37-EUobserver understands transport experts at the European Commission are analysing the potential economic blowback should border controls become more severe throughout the passport-free Schengen area.Arrien Kruyt, vice-chair of the Meijers Committee, a Dutch independent experts' group, told this website the European Commission is analysing possible transport costs should internal borders reappear.Kruyt, who attended a meeting on the issue with commission officials at its transport branch on 28 January, said on Thursday (4 February) conservative figures put forward hover at "around €6 billion".The commission's transport spokesperson neither confirmed nor denied the study or the figure but instead referred back to a speech earlier this week at the European Parliament by EU commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker on safeguarding Schengen.Juncker had previously said at a press conference that border checks in Europe would cost road transport companies €3 billion a year in lost revenue.-Juncker's €3 billion figure comes from the Geneva-based International Road Transport Union (IRU), an association that represents bus, coach, taxi and truck operators. Its branch in Brussels told EUobserver the real figure is likely between 3 to €10 billion, depending on border delays."The potential for just the road transport industry could be as high as €10 billion depending how severe the delays and border crossings become," said IRU spokesperson Stuart Colley.Around 6 million people are employed in land and passenger transport with several million trucks transporting goods throughout the EU on a daily basis.Colley cited estimated costs per vehicle somewhere between €55 and €70 per hour of delay."That is in terms of fuel, lost contracts, in terms of drivers' wages," he said.Other possible factors include penalties for delivery delays, which may force companies to hire out more truckers to provide the same service. Perishable goods like food may also be at risk.Trade between EU states in 2013 was €2.8 trillion. The European Commission, for its part, briefly highlighted the concerns in its 200-page Winter Economic Forecast. The report, out Thursday, says "the long term reintroduction of internal border controls" may disrupt economic growth in the internal market. It notes the public perception of the increased number of refugee numbers may also thwart economic confidence.Economic affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici said any risk to Schengen would be "political and an economic mistake".In a study published earlier this week, French public think-tank France Strategie estimated the total loses throughout the EU at over €100 billion by 2025."Widespread permanent border controls would decrease trade between Schengen countries by a factor of 10 percent to 20 percent," it noted.

German police arrest suspected terrorists By Eric Maurice-feb 5,16-euobserver

BRUSSELS, Today, 09:25-German police arrested a man in Berlin and a woman and a man near Cologne on Thursday (4 February) for what they believe may have been preparation for a terror attack in the German capital.Police raids were also operated in Hannover. Two other men are still being hunted by security forces, which are expected to publish photos on Friday.Documents including fake IDs and telephones were seized, but not weapons.A spokesman for the state prosecutor said that there were "plans for possible attacks in Germany, concrete for Berlin".According to German media, targets could have included Checkpoint Charlie, a former crossing point between East and West Berlin visited frequently by tourists, and Alexanderplatz, Berlin's central square. Police were deployed on both sides Thursday. The suspects were under surveillance, and police and intelligence services decided to act after they appeared to stop communicating with each other."As they did not speak about the attack, we could fear that their plan was finalised," a security official was quoted as saying by the Tagesspiegel. The newspaper said that orders for attacks in Berlin were given by Islamic State (IS) leaders, the same who ordered the Paris attacks in November. One of the two men arrested, a 26-year old Algerian, was already wanted by Algerian authorities for his involvement in IS. The German press agency DPA also said he recently went to Molenbeek, the Brussels neighbourhood where several Paris attackers lived.According to the Berliner Zeitung, he came from Syria through the Balkans and Bavaria and was registered as a refugee. He was arrested in a refugee centre in Attendorn, 80 km from Cologne.-Critics-The arrest, and the reported use of refugee status, could fuel the controversy over the German government's migration policy.Germany's intelligence chief said in the Berliner Zeitung Friday that his services received more than 100 tips-off about IS fighters among refugees, and that many of them proved to be defamation. On Thursday, chancellor Angela Merkel came under more pressure to change the course of her policy. The leader of the Saxony-Anhalt region, Reiner Haseloff from Merkel's CDU party, said there was "at the moment a loss of control that is no longer acceptable".A poll published this week by ARD television said that 81 percent of Germans now think that the government doesn't control the situation.Former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder also critised Merkel on Thursday. In a meeting of his SPD party, he said he would never have used the phrase "we can make it" which Merkel repeated many times since the start of the migrant crisis."I would have said: 'We can make it when we are ready to face the challenges'," Schroeder said.

Fall of Syria's Aleppo would hand Russia's Putin elusive prize-Reuters By Andrew Osborn-FEB 5,16-YAHOONEWS

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin thinks Russian air strikes in Syria have helped turn the war's tide but the pace of the Syrian army's advance has frustrated him, some sources say. If Aleppo falls, he could get the military and symbolic prize he has been craving.More than four months of Russian air strikes have stabilized the government of President Bashar al-Assad, the Kremlin's closest Middle East ally, helping his forces find momentum on the battlefield. But the names and strategic significance of the towns and villages they have recaptured have failed to electrify a Russian public more worried about falling living standards. Nor has the Syrian army - backed by Russian air power - yet delivered a major victory that Russia can sell to the wider world as proof of its military might and growing Middle East clout."There has been some frustration with the Syrian army's performance," one source close to the Russian military, who declined to be identified, told Reuters. "Particularly in the beginning they were making slow progress."Retaking full control of Aleppo, Syria's biggest city before the five-year war, would change the narrative, say diplomats and analysts, bringing Putin a step closer to his preferred end-game which envisages a Russia-friendly Syrian government that allows Moscow to keep its naval and air base there."So far we've heard reports of government forces gaining ground here and there and there have been a few notable successes," Dmitry Trenin, a former colonel in the Russian army and director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, told Reuters."But all those successes were rather tactical and not particularly spectacular," said Trenin. "Should Aleppo be placed under full control of Damascus that would be a big psychological boost for Assad and a source of satisfaction for the Kremlin."Aleppo has been divided for years, with government forces controlling a section and other parts in the hands of rebels.Tens of thousands of Syrians fled intensifying Russian bombardment around Aleppo on Friday, and aid workers said they feared the city, which once held two million people, could soon fall under complete government siege.Government troops and their Lebanese and Iranian allies fully encircled the countryside north of Aleppo and cut off the main supply route linking the city to Turkey in the last 24 hours. Ankara said it suspected the aim was to starve the population into submission. As the Kremlin's impatience for a breakthrough has grown, it has bolstered its forces in Syria. Mostly recently, local media reported it had dispatched its most advanced military jet -- the Sukhoi-35s -- to join its strike force of around 40 fast jets.It has also intensified its strike rate.-'USEFUL DISTRACTION'-A victory in Aleppo could help lift morale at home where an economic crisis is eroding living standards and real incomes are falling for the first time in Putin's 15 years in power.Boosted and protected by a loyal state media, a tightly-controlled political system and a dearth of meaningful opposition, Putin's approval rating remains over 80 percent according to opinion polls. But with tentative signs of social discontent bubbling up -- foreign currency mortgages holders, truckers and pensioners have all protested in recent months -- a headline-grabbing Russia-assisted victory in Syria could cheer downcast voters."It would be a useful distraction and a show for people," said Stepan Goncharov, of independent pollster, the Levada Center, saying state media had in the past used Syria to stoke anti-Western feeling and to reinforce the idea that Russia is again a great power."Their trick is to remove themes that stir social anxiety and replace them with ones that unite," said Goncharov. "A military victory (in Aleppo) would be a great power moment, a symbol of military might, and would be used to increase support for the authorities."He said the last time Levada asked, in October, they found that 72 percent of Russians had a broadly positive opinion of Russian air strikes in Syria, but that the subject had since taken a back seat to stories about the economy and what the Kremlin was doing to navigate the economic crisis. There were some signs support for the authorities was slipping a little because of the downturn, he added.Carnegie's Trenin said Russians, despite the Kremlin's flashy media campaign, were not actually that interested in the Syria conflict and with memories of the Soviet debacle in Afghanistan still lingering wanted the Kremlin to limit its involvement there."For most people this is a war in a distant country," said Trenin, saying voters remained nervous about any suggestion that ground forces might be sent. So far, the official Russian military body count has been just four, three of whom were killed in combat. However, Islamic State claimed it blew up a Russian passenger plane over Egypt in October, killing all 224 people onboard, in revenge for Russia's Syria campaign. For Putin, says Trenin, Syria is important but part of a wider play."The ultimate goal of Mr Putin is to restore Russia to great power status," he said. "Syria is part of that. But it's also about wider Russian foreign policy and about Putin's own legacy. Syria is the place where this is being decided."(Editing by Peter Graff)

Pope, Russian patriarch to talk about persecution of Christians-Reuters-feb 5,16-yahoonews

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The patriarch of Russia's Orthodox Church will take part in an historic first meeting with the Roman Catholic pontiff on Feb. 12 because of the need for a joint response to the persecution of Christians in the Middle East, the Orthodox Church said.Senior Orthodox cleric Metropolitan Hilarion said that long-standing differences between the two churches remain, most notably a row over the status of the Uniate Church, in Ukraine. But he said these differences were being put aside so that Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis could come together over persecution of Christians. This issue will be the central item on the agenda for their meeting, in Havana, Cuba, the cleric said."The situation shaping up today in the Middle East, in North and Central Africa, and in some other regions where extremists are carrying out a genuine genocide of the Christian population, demands urgent measures and an even closer cooperation between the Christian churches," Hilarion said."We need to put aside internal disagreements at this tragic time and join efforts to save Christians in the regions where they are subject to the most atrocious persecution."The meeting could be a hugely significant step toward healing the 1,000-year-old rift between the Western and Eastern branches of Christianity, which split in the Great Schism of 1054.Hilarion said the first-ever meeting between the heads of the two Christian churches would not take place in Europe because Patriarch Kirill had objected to this idea from the very beginning."Because it is namely Europe with which this tragic history of divisions and conflicts among Christians is linked," Hilarion said.(Reporting by Dmitry Solovyov; Writing by Christian Lowe; Editing by Alexander Winning)

Progressive candidates make progress on defining progressivism-Meredith Shiner-Political correspondent-February 5, 2016-yahoonews

Progressive. Progressive. Progressive.Thursday night’s Democratic debate was dominated by one word and a fight between two candidates about what “progressive” means and who best represents its definition.Over the course of two hours, the word “progressive” was uttered by the two Democratic presidential hopefuls 19 times. Hillary Clinton far outscored Bernie Sanders in number of uses, 16 to 3, according to a Yahoo News review of a transcript of the debate. In one answer early on, Clinton used the word “progressive” nine times.“I am a progressive who gets things done. And the root of that word, progressive is ‘progress.’ But I’ve heard Sen. Sanders’ comments, and it’s really caused me to wonder who’s left in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Under his definition, President Obama is not progressive because he took donations from Wall Street; Vice President Biden is not progressive because he supported Keystone,” Clinton said immediately before giving a shout-out to New Hampshire’s Democratic senator. “Sen. [Jeanne] Shaheen is not progressive because she supports the trade pact.“Even the late, great Sen. Paul Wellstone would not fit this definition,” she added, invoking the Defense of Marriage Act, “because he voted for DOMA.“You know, we have differences and, honestly, I think we should be talking about what we want to do for the country. But if we’re going to get into labels, I don’t think it was particularly progressive to vote against the Brady Bill five times,” Clinton continued. “I don’t think it was progressive to vote to give gun makers and sellers immunity. I don’t think it was progressive to vote against Ted Kennedy’s immigration reform. So we could go back and forth like this, but the fact is most people watching tonight want to know what we’ve done and what we will do.”It’s unclear how much voters will be swayed by a semantic argument over “progressivism,” but it was apparent that Clinton was trying to make inroads with voters in the Granite State against Sanders, who according to latest polling is up 20 points heading into Tuesday’s primary. One of the cornerstones of Sanders’ appeal, especially with young voters, is his singular focus on economic equality issues and his self-definition as a revolutionary Democratic socialist. The mini-debate on the word progressive felt very forced in the overall context of the larger debate, which touched on topics like the death penalty and Wall Street regulation in a more substantive way. And the trading of barbs on stage was an extension of a protracted Twitter fight earlier between @HillaryClinton and @BernieSanders, which likely got more attention from the Beltway chattering class than it did from actual voters in states where ballots will be cast in the coming weeks. One of Sanders’ “progressive” mentions was almost an exact repeat of a talking point his social media team posted on Twitter Wednesday. “All that I said was there’s nothing wrong with being a moderate,” Sanders said to Clinton on stage Thursday, arguing that you can’t be both a moderate and a progressive at the same time.Of course, the debate was about much more than who could say “progressive” the most, and the two candidates quickly turned to another issue — who was most “establishment.”(Cover tile photo combination: Photos by Mike Segar/Reuters)

February 2, 2016-Ted Cruz’s Vice President Choice A Ben Carson Ticket? Donald Trump Possible, Marco Rubio A Cabinet Pick-Patrick Frye-YAHOONEWS-INQUISITR

With the 2016 Iowa caucus results behind us, Ted Cruz’s vice president choice may soon become the topic of the hour. Donald Trump and Marco Rubio trailed close behind Cruz, with both grabbing seven GOP delegates to Cruz’s eight. Ben Carson also managed to pull in three delegates, putting him ahead of most of the Republicans, including Jeb Bush and Rand Paul, who each only secured one delegate a piece. At this point in time, all of the Republican candidates are tossing verbal mud at each other, which is not unusual for this portion of any American election cycle. As time passes, one winner will emerge, and then it will be time to forgive and forget. Assuming the Iowa results are an indicator for the future, it’s possible that Ted Cruz’s vice president pick may come from one of the major runner-ups in the field. In the fall, Laura Ingraham asked about Donald Trump’s vice presidental pick, and it seemed almost certain that a Trump/Cruz ticket would emerge since he responded, “Ted Cruz is now agreeing with me 100 percent… I like him. He’s backed everything I’ve said.” According to the Hill, the two Republicans do seem fairly compatible, since their positions on illegal immigration, Mexican border security, the Iran nuclear deal, and other issues are largely the same.At the same time, Trump admitted that “we’ll have to go to war” if Cruz’s polls and delegate results began to catch up with Trump’s then-leading position. With war declared, the recent mud-slinging has included Trump calling Cruz a “total liar” since a recent Cruz ad claimed a “vote for Donald Trump is a vote for Obamacare.”“Look, Ted Cruz is a total liar. I am so against Obamacare. I’ve been saying it for two years in my speeches, I’m going to repeal and replace Obamacare,” Trump said, according to ABC. “I don’t even know where he gets this.”Trump’s attacks have even included calling Cruz an “anchor baby” over the whole birther scandal, which took the election bickering to a whole new low.Was the inevitable fallout between the leading Republicans enough to remove Trump as a potential choice for Ted Cruz’s vice president pick? It’s too early to say, but in the past Cruz has suggested Trump could help him with trade negotiations and be put in charge of constructing the planned Mexican border wall. Cruz hasn’t specified whether Trump would fulfill these responsibilities as VP or as part of Cruz’s administration, but the opportunity remains.Based upon the Iowa results, the second VP possibility is Marco Rubio. Ted Cruz has not discussed Rubio as a potential vice president pick yet, but he has stated that he would “of course” put Rubio in a cabinet position within his administration.“Marco is a very, very talented leader. He’s a friend of mine, he’s charming, he’s an incredible communicator,” Cruz said back in December, according to the New York Daily News.Rubio, on the other hand, did not reciprocate the compliments and went on the attack, so it’s hard to say whether he would be open to considering a VP offer on a Cruz/Rubio ticket. In November, Rubio also made it clear that his VP brainstorming did not include Cruz. Instead, Marco Rubio’s vice president choice would be Republican New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, which would help with both Latino and female voters. [It’s also been speculated that Donald Trump may consider Martinez for VP.]-I Ben Carson's Presidential campgin on borrowed time? Back in September, the Washington Examiner says Donald Trump would be open to having the retired neurosurgeon as a 2016 running mate since they had a “very good relationship,” despite having a “different style”.“I have some great assets and he has some great assets,” Trump said at the time. “But we are both resonating, there is no question about that.”By October, the polls of time had the media asking about Ben Carson’s vice president choices, but Carson believed he and Trump were not “compatible” enough.“I believe that Donald Trump has been very useful because he brought in a lot of people, a lot of curiosity and enthusiasm,” Carson said, according to Time magazine. “And whoever the eventual nominee is will benefit from that. But in terms of Vice President, I would obviously want somebody who is compatible with me.”The question is whether Ted Cruz would also find Carson compatible at this time. Based upon the number of Iowa delegates, Carson represents a distinct middle ground in GOP popularity, but that doesn’t mean Cruz’s campaign won’t target Carson. In fact, yesterday Carson accused Cruz supporters of telling caucus voters that Carson dropped out entirely from the race.“I was reasonably happy today, until I, you know, discovered the dirty tricks going on — spreading rumors I had dropped out,” Carson said, according to MSNBC. “That’s the reason I got into this race, looking at the level of deceit and distrust going on in country.”Otherwise, compatibility between the two Republicans seems to be high. Both men hold their Christian values in high regard, so it could be argued they would compliment each other as running mates. Reuters reported that socially conservative Republicans “have their eye on Senator Ted Cruz of Texas for the party’s presidential nod and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson for the Republican vice presidential nominee.” They would also have the potential to draw a diverse set of demographics since Cruz is half-Cuban and Carson is African American. The retired doctor rose to popularity years ago based upon his comments about Obamacare, but his lack of political experience, and his willingness to speak frankly about hot button issues like homosexuality, has caused him to go from front-runner to fourth place. Conservative website Human Events claims Carson’s lack of experience holds him back from being POTUS, but they also argue Carson would be the best option for vice president, since “droves” of evangelical Christians would be excited to support him. “Despite his lack of political know-how, Carson has a lot to offer on a presidential ticket—just not at the very top of it. Carson has an incredible personal narrative much of the nation will admire and relate to. He’s perhaps the only candidate on the Republican ticket in the past 30 years or more who can walk into devastated urban environments such as Detroit, Carson’s hometown, and deliver a message of hope and prosperity. He can also sell himself as an expert on health care reform and the need to provide an alternative to Obamacare.”Who would you pick as Ted Cruz’s vice president assuming he wins the Republican nomination?

Struggling Republican Bush brings out the big gun: his mom-Reuters By Doina Chiacu-FEB 5,16-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Jeb Bush brought out his famous family four days before the crucial U.S. presidential primary in New Hampshire, tapping his mother on Friday to scold Republican front-runner Donald Trump over his use of profanity and treatment of women. In a last ditch attempt to make a mark on a Republican primary campaign he was supposed to own, Bush lashed out at both Trump and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, the one-time protege who has eclipsed Bush as the party's establishment candidate in the 2016 White House race.New opinion polls following Monday's Iowa caucuses showed Trump retaining a double-digit lead in New Hampshire's primary next Tuesday with Rubio rapidly rising into second place in the state as Republicans battle for the nomination in November's presidential election.Bush, the former governor of Florida, leaned on his well-known family for support. While former President George W. Bush appeared in a new ad praising his brother as having "a good heart and a strong backbone" and being able to unite the country, Jeb Bush sat with his mother for an interview with CBS show "This Morning."The two attacked Trump as misogynistic and vulgar after he used a four-letter word in a recent campaign appearance."I don't think a president would have ever shouted profanities in a speech in front of thousands of people with kids in the crowd," Jeb Bush said. "He does it all the time."His mother lambasted Trump for criticizing Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly after she had quizzed him at a Republican debate in August. Trump made comments widely interpreted as referring to her menstrual cycle."I don't know how women can vote for someone who said what he said about Megyn Kelly," Mrs. Bush said. "It's terrible. And we knew what he meant, too."Much loved by today's Republicans, the former first lady herself raised eyebrows in 1984 when she reportedly made a derogatory reference to Democratic vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman on a major party ticket, saying, "I can't say it, but it rhymes with rich.""ALMOST TOO POLITE"-Trump has dismissed Jeb Bush as a "low-energy" loser. The son and brother of U.S. presidents who was expected to glide to the Republican nomination, Bush has struggled to seize the offensive and trails in the single digits in many national polls.Mrs. Bush, who was campaigning for her younger son in New Hampshire, said "America needs" Jeb and drew an implicit contrast to the brash swagger of Trump. "He's got the same values that America seems to have lost. He's almost too polite."While rivals took aim at him, Trump was forced to miss a rally on Friday in Londonderry, New Hampshire because of a snow storm. He returned to New York and Thursday, a spokesman said, and could not get back to the state. Trump has eschewed much of the one-on-one retail politicking of typical campaigns in favor of large rallies. But in New Hampshire, where voters are used to having candidates' close attention, the strategy could hurt.Jeb Bush seized the opportunity to make fun of Trump on Twitter, pointing out that even his mother was able make it out despite the weather."My 90 year old mother made it out to campaign,” he wrote in response to Trump's tweet that he was moving a campaign event to Monday due to a "big storm." An attached photograph showed Mrs. Bush, wearing a pearl necklace, shaking hands with a five-year-old girl in New Hampshire.Jeb Bush also stepped up attacks on Rubio as lacking in experience and accomplishments, saying on MSNBC the first-term Florida lawmaker had done "nothing" in the U.S. Senate.Rubio got a bounce from his Iowa performance with a WMUR/CNN poll showing him rising 7 points to 18 percent. Trump held steady at 29 percent, while Cruz gained 1 point for 13 percent. An NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist survey showed Trump with 30 percent, Rubio at 17 percent and Cruz 15.For the Democrats, opinion polls show U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont with a double-digit lead in New Hampshire over rival Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state. Clinton went on the attack against Sanders on Thursday in their most contentious presidential debate yet.(Additional reporting by Emily Stephenson in New Hampshire, Amy Tennery in New York, Mohammad Zargham in Washington; Editing by Bill Trott and Alistair Bell; For more on the 2016 presidential race, see the Reuters blog, “Tales from the Trail”; http://blogs.reuters.com/talesfromthetrail/)

Carly Fiorina cut from debate: ‘The game is rigged’-Michael Walsh-Reporter-February 5, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina harshly criticized the political system as rigged after she was cut from Saturday night’s debate.Despite outperforming Ohio Gov. John Kasich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in Iowa, Fiorina will be the only major candidate not onstage in Manchester, N.H. — something the former Hewlett-Packard CEO clearly took issue with.“I’ve been telling you the game is rigged. And here’s even more proof: The people of Iowa voted in an election this week, and I beat the establishment’s guys,” she said in a statement on her Facebook page Friday. “Tens of thousands of you stood with us yesterday to demand a fair debate. But Disney’s ABC and the RNC have decided to keep me off the debate stage this weekend, caving to pressure from the same establishment candidates we beat who are afraid to debate me.”To qualify for the debate, candidates had to place in the top three in Iowa or in the top six on average in recent New Hampshire or national polls. The network, which is not hosting an undercard debate, revealed its final lineup on Thursday: Kasich, Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, businessman Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and retired doctor Ben Carson.“This isn’t about me. It’s about you. It’s about the people of New Hampshire who are about to vote,” Fiorina continued. “This is emblematic of the power that is being taken away from you every day — by the political class, the media establishment, and the bureaucracy. They don’t want your votes to count. They don’t want your voice to be heard. The network of George Stephanopoulos wants to tell you to sit down and shut up and elect Hillary Clinton.”The reference to ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos is undoubtedly meant to evoke his failure to disclose contributions to the Clinton Foundation in recent years. Many viewers saw a conflict of interest because he had been reporting on the Clintons and their foundation without mentioning his support.According to Fiorina, keeping her off the debate stage is just the latest example of media bias for establishment candidates.“Well, guess what? ABC and the RNC and other candidates may keep me off that stage. But I will not be silenced. Our government is broken, and we know the establishment isn’t going to fix it. It’s time to stand together and say we won’t back down.”Major Republican figures spoke out against Fiorina’s exclusion from the debate. She thanked rival Cruz for “standing for the fair debate the American people deserve.”“Hey @ABC: put @CarlyFiorina on the debate stage! She got more Iowa votes than John and Chris. Don’t exclude only woman,” former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney tweeted.“.@ABC should put @CarlyFiorina in the new hampshire debate. she came in ahead of kasich and christie. She has earned a spot,” tweeted former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. In Iowa, Fiorina also finished ahead of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Donald Trump: Nobel laureate?-Caitlin Dickson-Breaking News Reporter-February 4, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign took a beating in Iowa earlier this week, but his bruised ego should be healing nicely with the news that the real estate tycoon has apparently been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. During his bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination so far, Trump’s foreign policy platform has included promises to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, crack down on trade with China and “bomb the s*** out of ISIS,” as well as a proposed ban on all Muslim travel to the U.S.The latter, in particular, has earned Trump international scorn. And yet, the AFP reported Monday that the belligerent billionaire is being considered for the most prestigious international accolade, alongside the likes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, American whistleblower Edward Snowden, Pope Francis and residents of the Greek islands who have welcomed thousands of refugees to their shores. The AFP report cites Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of Oslo’s Peace Research Institute and avid Nobel watcher, who said he’d received a copy of Trump’s nomination letter. Harpviken has declined to reveal the name of the person who submitted Trump for the Nobel Committee’s consideration, but he wrote on the Peace Research Institute’s website that he’d confirmed the nomination with the letter’s U.S. author, who wrote that Trump should get the prize for “his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China.” Harpvikan told the U.K.’s Telegraph that he received a copy of the letter from the anonymous nominator himself and that “the nominator has a position which gives him the right to nominate, and that I consider it valid.” According to the Nobel Foundation rules, qualified nominators for Peace Prize contenders include government officials, professors, directors of foreign policy institutes and peace research organizations, former Nobel laureates, members of international courts and members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Though Harpvikan said he has “committed not to reveal the identity of the nominator,” the Telegraph suggested it was probably a U.S. politician who put Trump’s name in the running. It is the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s policy to keep the official nominee list a secret, which is why Olav Njølstad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told Newsweek he could “neither confirm nor disconfirm” Trump’s nomination. Those who nominate, however, are free to disclose their picks. Harpvikan’s organization publishes an annual list of confirmed Nobel nominees as well as a shortlist for potential winners. That list does not include Trump, who will likely join the list of history’s most unexpected Nobel nominees, which includes Russian President Vladimir Putin, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

U.S. Air Force says plans test F-35 deployment this month-Reuters By Andrea Shalal-FEB 5,16-YAHOONEWS

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nevada (Reuters) - The U.S. Air Force will deploy four Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jets to a different U.S. air base this month as it assesses whether the new warplane can be declared combat-ready by August as planned, a senior officer told Reuters on Thursday.Major General Jay Silveria, who heads the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center at Nellis Air Force Base, said the F-35 jets would be sent from the Nevada base to Mountain Home Air Force Base in southwestern Idaho later this month. The deployment would include pilots, mechanics, spare parts, equipment and the plane's computerized logistics system to test the ability to deploy the plane for combat, he said. The test would help the Air Force assess its ability to send the jets to other locations and ensure that they can be repaired and maintained, Silveria said."What we’re trying to do is exercise the deployment concepts and to learn from maintenance and learn from (operations)," Silveria said.Like any warplane, maintenance of the F-35 requires specialized tools and materials, and it was critical that all those tools travel with the jet when it deployed, he said.Silveria said the test deployment was part of an assessment of whether an initial squadron of F-35 jets was ready for combat. He said the warfare center was due to deliver that "operational readiness assessment" to General Hawk Carlisle, head of Air Combat Command, in July.Carlisle would use the assessment to help decide whether an initial squadron of F-35A fighter jets was ready for combat.Silveria, a pilot who also flies the F-35, said the 12 F-35s based at Nellis Air Force Base were performing well in regular exercises with other aircraft, and had proven their ability to share data and communicate with fourth-generation jets.He said the jets were now also able to share data within a formation of four F-35 jets flying together - a capability he experienced during a flight in the past week. The Air Force hoped to declare that it had an "initial operational capability" of F-35s between August and December. The U.S. Marine Corps declared an initial squadron of 10 of its F-35B model jets ready for combat last July. The F-35B can take off from shorter runways and land like a helicopter,Two Air Force F-35s are slated to have their first international deployment when they fly to Britain in July to participate in two British air shows.(Reporting by Andrea Shalal; Editing by Paul Tait)
