Hundreds of anti-Israel protests planned worldwide around October 7 anniversary-Diaspora Ministry says demonstrations scheduled across 37 countries, with more than 100 set for the weekend of October 10-11 By Zev Stub 5 October 2026, 8:05 pm

As Israeli and Jewish communities around the world mark the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led invasion and massacre in southern Israel, 262 pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel protests and events have been identified in 37 countries, the Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Ministry said. The events are planned through October 14, with 121 scheduled for October 10-11, the ministry said, citing data from its J-SOC (National Center for Combating Antisemitism). On October 7 itself, 75 demonstrations are planned worldwide. The events come after three years of frequent anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations in many cities and a sharp increase in antisemitic incidents worldwide. Authorities have repeatedly warned that such protests can create heightened security risks for Israelis and Jews. The United States has the largest number of planned events, with 45, followed by Spain with 40, the ministry said. Australia expects to see 21 protests, the UK 19, and Italy 16. Germany and Canada each will have 14, while France will have 10, and the Netherlands eight.Of the 262 events, 21 have been classified as high-risk and 66 as medium-risk.Around 45 protests are expected to take place near Israeli embassies, consulates, or other known Israeli assets, including 10 classified as high-risk.High-risk demonstrations are scheduled to take place directly outside Israeli diplomatic missions in Seoul, Bogotá, Mexico City, and Bangkok. Other high-risk locations include Amsterdam’s Dam Square, 220 meters (720 feet) from an aircrew hotel; a rally at Helsinki’s Rautatieasema, 300 meters (985 feet) from the Israeli embassy; and a demonstration on Ottawa’s Parliament Hill, 350 meters (1,150 feet) from the embassy.High-risk urban rallies in Milan, Rome, Paris, London, and Berlin are also expected to draw heightened police monitoring.Canada has the highest concentration of high-risk protests, with four planned in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa. The United States, Italy, Australia, and Greece each have two high-risk demonstrations. High-risk gatherings have also been identified in major international hubs, including London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Istanbul, Santiago, Bogotá, and Bangkok.Further pro-Palestinian solidarity actions are planned across every major continent, including in South Africa, Uruguay, Malaysia, Ecuador, South Korea, and New Zealand. Local police and security services are preparing crowd-management measures ahead of the peak demonstration dates. The ministry said the protests are part of a strategic effort to maximize media exposure and public participation. It urged Israelis abroad to remain vigilant and follow local security advisories.

Russia Plague alert: Second death allegedly reported, WHO says no cases recorded-The reports have nevertheless triggered concern because of the nature of Shipilova’s workplace and the use of quarantine measures in the region-Business Today Desk-Updated Oct 6, 2026 8:42 PM IST

Russia Plague alert: Second death allegedly reported, WHO says no cases recordedA reported second death has intensified concerns over a possible plague outbreak in Russia’s Irkutsk region-A reported second death has intensified concerns over a possible plague outbreak in Russia’s Irkutsk region, although Russian authorities have not confirmed that plague is responsible for either death.According to a report published by the Daily Mail, citing Russian media reports, a second person has allegedly died at a hospital in Shelekhov, where health authorities introduced quarantine measures following the death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker. The report comes amid growing international attention over the suspected infection. The first death involved Darya Shipilova, a laboratory employee at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. She died on October 2 after developing severe pneumonia of unexplained origin. Shipilova had worked at an institute that studies dangerous pathogens, including Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for plague. The Daily Mail reported that hundreds of people who may have come into contact with Shipilova were placed under observation. It also cited Russian media reports alleging that a second patient had died at an infectious-diseases hospital in the region. However, the reported second plague death has not been independently confirmed by Russian health authorities or the World Health Organisation (WHO).Russia’s consumer health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, has repeatedly rejected claims of a confirmed plague outbreak. Reuters reported on Tuesday that the agency said extensive testing had found no infectious disease among contacts of the deceased laboratory worker and no plague microorganisms linked to her work. The WHO also said Russian authorities had informed the organisation that no plague cases had been recorded in Irkutsk. According to Reuters, Russian authorities said people who had been in contact with the deceased had been identified, and tests for dangerous infectious pathogens were negative. The reports have nevertheless triggered concern because of the nature of Shipilova’s workplace and the use of quarantine measures in the region. Local reports have also described people wearing protective equipment and heightened precautions around medical facilities. The Kremlin has urged the public to rely on official information rather than rumours and speculation. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the situation was being handled by Russia’s health authorities. The WHO has said the risk to the wider population currently appears low, while experts note that pneumonic plague can be serious but is treatable with antibiotics when detected promptly.

Russia plague outbreak scare: Pneumonic or bubonic? Key differences, symptoms & risksThe disease can progress extremely rapidly. Following inhalation of infectious droplets, symptoms can begin in as little as one day.SUMMARY-Pneumonic plague is the only form of plague capable of spreading directly from person to person-If treated promptly with appropriate antibiotics, plague can be cured-Russian authorities have so far stopped short of publicly confirming pneumonic plague-A mysterious death in Russia’s Siberian region of Irkutsk has triggered quarantine measures and contact tracing, reviving fears of a disease many associate with the medieval Black Death. The case involves a 28-year-old employee of an anti- plague research institute who developed severe pneumonia and died shortly after being hospitalised. Nearly 200 people have reportedly been placed under medical bservation.Russian authorities have so far stopped short of publicly confirming pneumonic plague as the cause of the illness. Reports have, however, pointed to a possible laboratory exposure involving Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague. The circumstances of the reported exposure have not been independently confirmed. That distinction matters because bubonic and pneumonic plague are not two different diseases. Both are forms of plague caused by the same bacterium, but they affect different parts of the body and have very different implications for transmission. What is bubonic plague? Bubonic plague is the most common form of plague. It generally occurs when a person is bitten by a flea infected with Yersinia pestis. The bacteria travel to nearby lymph nodes, where they multiply. The classic symptom is a bubo — a swollen, extremely painful lymph node, usually in the groin, armpit or neck. Other symptoms can include: Fever, chills, headache, weakness, painful or swollen lymph nodes.Symptoms generally appear within 2-8 days after infection. If treated promptly with appropriate antibiotics, plague can be cured. But untreated bubonic plague can progress as bacteria enter the bloodstream or spread to the lungs. What is pneumonic plague? Pneumonic plague is plague that affects the lungs. It can develop when Yersinia pestis spreads to the lungs from another form of plague, or when a person inhales infectious droplets from an infected person or animal. Its symptoms are markedly different from the classic bubonic form: fever, headache, weakness, rapidly developing pneumonia, shortness of breath, chest pain, cough and sometimes bloody or watery mucus. The disease can progress extremely rapidly. Following inhalation of infectious droplets, symptoms can begin in as little as one day; the CDC's 2026 guidance puts the typical incubation period at 1-3 days. The CDC says pneumonic plague is the only form of plague capable of spreading directly from person to person. Such transmission generally requires close contact with a person suffering from pneumonic plague, particularly while they are coughing. That is why a suspected pneumonic-plague case can lead to isolation, contact tracing and respiratory precautions much more quickly than an isolated bubonic-plague infection. Why is pneumonic plague more dangerous? The danger is not simply that pneumonic plague affects the lungs. It is the combination of rapid progression and potential human-to-human transmission. With bubonic plague, the usual chain is: infected rodent → infected flea → human With pneumonic plague, another chain becomes possible: infected person → respiratory droplets → another person. A person who inhales infectious droplets can develop primary pneumonic plague without first having a flea bite or bubonic infection.Untreated pneumonic plague can therefore become fatal very quickly. But this does not mean every suspected case represents the beginning of a large outbreak. Early identification, isolation of suspected cases, monitoring of contacts and antibiotic treatment can substantially reduce the risk.So what does the Russia case tell us? The reported Irkutsk case is particularly concerning because the deceased woman reportedly worked at an anti-plague research institute. Reports have suggested a possible laboratory accident involving plague bacteria, but those details have not been officially established.Russian authorities have instead described the situation in more cautious terms, referring to a suspected “particularly dangerous infection” and saying contacts were being monitored.Reports have put the number of people under observation at close to 200, with some hospitals placed under quarantine. Importantly, the available reporting does not establish that there is a widespread pneumonic-plague outbreak in Russia. The key question for public-health authorities is whether the deceased had pneumonic plague and, if so, whether anyone else was infected through respiratory exposure. Is plague still treatable? Yes. Plague is dangerous, but it is not an untreatable disease. The CDC says plague can be treated with commonly available antibiotics and that treatment should begin as soon as possible when the disease is strongly suspected. Close contacts of a person with pneumonic plague may be placed under observation and can receive preventive antibiotics depending on the nature and timing of their exposure.
