SURABAYA, 21st JANUARY 2015 – AirAsia Indonesia wishes to inform the latest development on the search and rescue (SAR) operations of QZ 8501 led by The National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) Republic of Indonesia.SAR vessels and divers were mobilized today in order to observe the seafloor, searching for more passengers around the primary focus area. The aircraft fuselage wreckage has yet to be lifted due to continually challenging sea conditions. No additional recoveries were reported today. JAKARTA: Warning alarms in AirAsia flight QZ8501 were "screaming" as the pilots desperately tried to stabilise the plane just before it plunged into the Java Sea last month, a crash investigator said Wednesday. The noise of several alarms -- including one that indicated the plane was stalling -- can be heard going off in recordings from the black box in the Airbus A320-200's cockpit, the investigator told AFP, requesting anonymity."The warning alarms, we can say, were screaming, while in the background they (the pilot and co-pilot) were busy trying to recover," the investigator said, adding the warnings were going off "for some time".The investigator, from Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC), added that the pilots' voices were drowned out by the sound of the alarms.The revelation came a day after Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said that the plane had climbed abnormally fast before stalling and plunging into the sea, during a flight on December 28 in stormy weather from Indonesia's Surabaya to Singapore."In the final minutes, the plane climbed at a speed which was beyond normal," the minister told reporters.The plane crashed in shallow waters with 162 people on board, but so far just 53 bodies have been recovered. Committee head Tatang Kurniadi said that the preliminary report into the crash would be completed on Tuesday, a month after the accident. He said the full report would not be released publicly but the media would be told some of its contents.There was a huge international hunt for the crashed plane, involving ships from several countries including the US and China.All but seven of those on board the flight were Indonesian. The foreign nationals were from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and France.

JAKARTA: Revelations that AirAsia Flight QZ8501 climbed too fast before stalling and plunging into the sea point to "striking" similarities between the Java Sea accident and the 2009 crash of an Air France jet, analysts said Wednesday (Jan 21).Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said the Airbus A320-200 was ascending at a rate of 6,000 feet (1,800 metres) a minute before stalling, as it flew in stormy weather last month from Indonesia's Surabaya to Singapore."In the final minutes, the plane climbed at a speed which was beyond normal," he told reporters Tuesday. That ascent is about two to three times the normal climb rate for a commercial jetliner, according to experts.Indonesian divers recovered the plane's black boxes a week ago, after an arduous search for the jet that crashed on Dec 28 with 162 people on board. The cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder are now being analysed, with a preliminary report due next week.While they stressed the difficulty of drawing conclusions without seeing the full black box data, analysts said the accident had strong echoes of the crash of Air France flight 447 into the Atlantic in 2009, with the loss of 228 lives."The similarities are pretty striking," Daniel Tsang, founder of Hong Kong-based consultancy Aspire Aviation, told AFP. In that case, the Airbus A330 en route from Rio to Paris vanished at night during a storm. The aircraft's speed sensors were found to have malfunctioned, and the plane climbed too steeply, causing it to stall.As with the AirAsia disaster, the accident happened in what is known as the "intertropical convergence zone", an area around the equator where the north and south trade winds meet, and thunderstorms are common.

'PHENOMENAL' CLIMB

The investigation into AF447 found that both technical and human error were to blame. After the speed sensors froze up and failed, the pilots failed to react properly, according to the French aviation authority who said they lacked proper training.Jonan on Tuesday likened the doomed plane's ascent to a fighter jet, although experts noted that warplanes can climb considerably faster - 10,000 feet per minute when at altitude.However, Tom Ballantyne, Sydney-based chief correspondent for Orient Aviation magazine, said the rate of climb of the AirAsia jet was "just phenomenal", adding: "I'm not sure I've heard of anything that dramatic before."He said it would be unusual for weather alone to cause such a rapid ascent, but added it was possible if the jet hit "some bizarre unprecedented storm cell". "It is possible that the aircraft could have got caught in some sort of updraft that lifted it thousands of feet," he said.However, while saying the rapid ascent showed that there was "something very wrong", Gerry Soejatman, a Jakarta-based independent aviation analyst, added it was too early to have a firm read on the cause of the crash. "Although there are similarities with Air France, and the weather seems to be a factor, we can't make any conclusions that this is caused by the weather or icing - it's too early," he said.Nevertheless, Tsang said the probe was unfolding as analysts had predicted, with no explosions or loud bangs registered on the cockpit voice recorder, and thus no indication terrorism played a role. Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, which is probing the crash, said this week they are now focusing on human or aircraft error as probable causes, after analysing the data from the cockpit recorder.A huge international hunt for the crashed plane, involving ships from several countries including the US and China, finally located the wreckage at relatively shallow depth in the Java Sea.Indonesian search and rescue teams have so far recovered just 53 bodies, but hopes that more victims will be found were raised last week when a Singapore navy ship located the jet's main body, with the airline's motto "Now Everyone Can Fly" painted on the side.However, divers have not succeeded in reaching the fuselage despite several attempts due to bad weather, high waves and strong underwater currents. All but seven of those on board the flight were Indonesian. The foreign nationals were from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and France.

The world's political and business elite gather for their annual meeting in the glitzy Swiss ski resort of Davos from Wednesday, with the shadow of recent attacks in France and ongoing global conflicts looming large.French President Francois Hollande and US Secretary of State John Kerry will be among the 2,500 movers and shakers thrashing out the burning issues of the day next to the frozen slopes, exactly two weeks after the deadly attacks on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.The bloodshed in France, which left 17 people dead, and Western countries' efforts to prevent returning jihadists planning attacks on home soil will be high on the agenda of the four-day Davos meeting.Alongside top European and US leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel -- whose country recently foiled an attack -- the topic will be broached at a global level with Iraqi leaders including Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and Kurdish leader Massud Barzani.The raging Ukraine conflict will also feature high on the agenda, with President Petro Poroshenko addressing the gathering, after Kiev accused Russian forces of attacking its soldiers in the country's separatist east and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also making the trip up the mountain."Both terrorism and geopolitics are likely to cast their shadows on this year's meeting. Officially, the meeting is called the "World Economic Forum" and it comes as storm clouds gather over the global economy, with the International Monetary Fund slashing its world growth forecasts.A gloomy survey by consulting group PwC released on the eve of the meeting showed global business leaders are downbeat on the potential for economic growth in 2015.The European Central Bank's much-awaited likely decision on Thursday to introduce a form of Quantitative Easing -- a huge buy-up of government debt in the euro area -- will also focus attention among the assembled financial elite.And the looming Greek elections and renewed fears that the debt-wracked country could be forced to leave the eurozone will also feature prominently, as will the recent plunge in the price of oil.China's Li Keqiang, the country's first premier to attend the forum since 2009, will on Wednesday seek to shore up international confidence in the Chinese economy and allay fears that the Asian giant's growth is slowing.Ahead of the meeting, a report by charity Oxfam that wealth accumulated by the richest one percent will exceed that of the rest of the world in 2016, made headlines around the world.Opening the event, organiser Klaus Schwab said: "We are here to be passionate and to show our compassion. PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has rejected the application made by the Roman Catholic Church to re-evaluate the preliminary decision made in June 2014.The decision stated that the church is not allowed to make a plea against the decision made by the Home Affairs Ministry in banning the use of the word “Allah” in its Bahasa Malaysia weekly edition of The Herald.Chief of panel and Federal Court judge, Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong said a re-evaluation could only be made in several circum stances.“Re-evaluation of a judgement could only be made if there appears to be a bias situation, fraud or procedural unfairness and quorum failure in making a decision.“The court has found none of the criteria was met for the judgement to be re-evaluated,” he said at the Federal Court in Putrajaya today.Other judges in the panel are Tan Sri Ahmad Maarop, Tan Sri Hasan Lah, Datuk Ramly Ali and Datuk Azahar Mohamed.The Roman Catholic Church had applied for a re-evaluation of the judgement made by the Federal Court on June 23 which died its application to be allowed to appeal the decision made by the Home Affairs Ministry which prohibited the usage of the word “Allah” in The Herald. Meanwhile, the lawyer of the plaintiff Datuk Dr Cyrus Das said the plaintiffs respected the decision.“To fight for this issue (usage of the word “Allah”) I believe it should be done using other methods,” said Cyrus when met by reporters.
