OTTAWA - Canadian special forces got into a firefight with Islamic State fighters last week while on a training mission with Iraqi forces.Special forces commander Brig.-Gen. Mike Rouleau said Canadian snipers took out an ISIS mortar position after coming under fire near the front lines last Monday."A week ago we went up to the front lines and were fired upon and returned fire by sniper positions," Rouleau told reporters Monday.He said it was the first time Canadian trainers have come under fire, and he still considers the risk to the 65-70 Canadians on the ground in Iraq to be low.Canada joined the United States-led international coalition to fight ISIS back in October.The Canadian mission was to include airstrikes in Iraq, with some troops in the country to help train Iraqi forces.In December, the defence department denied Canadian snipers armed with long-range rifles, accompanied by Kurdish and Iraqi snipers, participated in operations against Islamist fighters from positions away from the front lines.Maj.-Gen. Michael Hood said the Canadians were only there to observe and train."We made it clear that this mission does not involve sending ground troops in a combat role," he said at the time.Also on Monday, Lt.-Gen. John Vance indicated Canadian troops are well-prepared to continue the mission beyond April if Parliament wants to extend it.He said defeating the ISIS ideology will take time.Vance also confirmed Canadian special forces troops are targeting Islamic State positions with lasers to guide the bombs dropped by coalition aircraft."This government gave us a job to do and we're doing it," Vance said.NDP defence critic MP Jack Harris said "Canadians have been misled.""What we are seeing now is mission creep," he said. "When you join the Iraqi forces on the front lines you will directly be involved in a combat role."PMO spokesman Jason MacDonald said the mission "is one in which they are providing advice and assistance to Iraqi forces only."We have always been clear that while this is a low-risk mission, it is not without risk and our forces on the ground will protect themselves if fired on in the course of carrying out their mission," MacDonald said.Defence expert and associate professor at the Royal Military College of Canada Christian Leuprecht noted the firefight "was not a forward offensive operation.""This was a defensive reaction in response to a direct threat to Canadian support elements on the ground," he said.Vance and Rouleau said the special forces advisers spend 20% of their time at or near the front lines, and 80% "behind the lines."Both disputed reporters' suggestions that the firefight amounted to "ground combat," which was not authorized in the motion passed by Parliament.Join SUN FORCE today.

TORONTO - New $650,000 signs will light up Ontario highways in full colour/couleur.Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca formally unveiled the bilingual energy-efficient highway signs Tuesday at Ledstar, a factory just north of Toronto where they are manufactured.Twenty-one signs have already been installed around the province.Del Duca said the signs will relay safety messages to drivers in easily understood images and symbols and with less text so people of all languages can comprehend their meaning and react quickly if necessary."This is the first bilingual, image-based sign plan developed and executed provincewide in Canada," Del Duca said. "These signs will help improve road safety, manage congestion on provincial highways and keep people and businesses moving."Each sign costs an eye-popping $650,000 to manufacture and install, but new signs will be added only as needed to replace existing signage, he said.

The earlier models cost $450,000.

The signs will provide road and weather conditions, traffic information and road safety tips like "No texting or dialing."Del Duca said he doesn't believe the new full-colour and extra bright LED signs will be a distraction for drivers."This has gone through a rigorous process to make sure that we arrive at the final product that will help traffic on the roads remain safe but also make sure that the information is conveyed so that traffic flow can be where it needs to be," Del Duca said.Progressive Conservative Transportation Critic Michael Harris said the province already has plenty of message signs on its highways."At a time when this government is struggling under a $12.5-billion deficit, do we really need to be spending more on shiny new colour TVs for our roadways?" Harris said in an e-mail. "Seriously, if the minister wants to have an impact on road safety, why does he continue to ignore winter road maintenance problems that have closed down the QEW and led to accidents and transportation headaches across the province, specifically in northern Ontario?"

Delayed budget conveys 'confusion'

Deputy leader Ralph Goodale said the government is sending the wrong message to Canadians by delaying the budget until at least April."It sends a message of real confusion on their part, a lack of confidence, a lack of direction. They've run out of gas and it doesn't seem that they know quite who is steering the bus." Employment Minister Jason Kenney told CBC Radio's The House on Saturday that the government would have to further restraint spending in the next budget.But the Canadian Press is reporting that a federal official is distancing the Conservative government from Kenney's remarks."Mr. Kenney was out making pronouncements over the weekend and government officials were very busy yesterday contradicting him," Goodale said before Tuesday's caucus meeting. "It really is entirely the wrong message to come from a government at a time of economic challenges."The Liberals have said they would reverse the government's promise of income splitting to pay for infrastructure investments as a way to create jobs.Goodale would not say on Tuesday morning whether a Liberal government would also scrap planned increases to the Universal Child Care Benefit.Today is the first time Liberal MPs will hear from Trudeau since Parliament rose in December for a six-week break.In the evening, Trudeau will give a speech at a rally organized by the party.
