MANAMA: France deployed an aircraft carrier in the Gulf on Monday (Feb 23) as part of the US-led military campaign against the Islamic State extremist group in Iraq, a defence ministry official said."The integration of the Charles de Gaulle in the operation... (in Iraq) begins this morning," a member of Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian's staff told AFP as his entourage made its way to the carrier.The first Rafale fighter jet took off in the morning from the Charles de Gaulle as it sailed about 200km off the coast north of Bahrain in the direction of Iraq. France launched Operation Chammal in support of the US-led coalition against IS in September.The Charles de Gaulle left its base in Toulon on Jan 13 for a five-month mission that will include several weeks in the Gulf working alongside the USS Carl Vinson as part of the coalition launched after IS seized swathes of Syria and Iraq last year. The French carrier is then to travel to India, where it is due to take part in exercises in mid-April.Carrying 12 Rafale and nine Super Etendard fighters, the carrier will significantly increase French air capabilities in the region.France has nine Rafales in the United Arab Emirates and six Mirage fighters in Jordan operating in Iraq, along with a maritime patrol and a refuelling aircraft.French warplanes have carried out about 100 reconnaissance missions and the same number of strike raids in Iraq since mid-September in support of Iraqi forces and Kurdish peshmerga fighters battling IS on the ground, ministry sources said.France is, along with Australia, one of the main contributors to the 32-member coalition effort aside from the United States, which is carrying out the bulk of strikes.The coalition has carried out more than 2,000 strikes since August, with France and other Western nations conducting operations over Iraq and several Arab nations taking part in strikes over Syria.The campaign aims to support forces in Iraq and Syria, including rebel fighters and Kurdish forces, fighting IS on the ground and to hit infrastructure seized by the extremist group such as oil facilities.While excluding the deployment of ground combat troops, coalition countries have also sent trainers to work with Iraqi forces.US military officials have said they want Iraqi forces to launch an offensive to retake the strategic northern city of Mosul from IS in April or May.The Charles de Gaulle strike group also includes an attack submarine, a French anti-aircraft frigate and the HMS Kent, a British anti-submarine frigate. GEORGE TOWN: The government will continue searching for the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 in the Southern Indian Ocean, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.Liow said so far, the search-and-rescue team had searched 35 per cent of the 60,000 square kilometre area."We hope the plane will be found. We are still searching. Data received from Inmarsat clearly shows that flight MH370 was heading towards the Southern Indian Ocean," he told reporters after the Chinese New Year Open House and official opening of Wisma MCA, here today.He was commenting on a report in the UK Daily newspaper that said flight MH370 was heading towards the Antarctic.Liow said each plane had a different signal and data provided by Inmarsat and the Air Traffic Control Centre showed that MH370 was heading towards the Southern Indian Ocean.Meanwhile, Liow said in conjunction with the first anniversary of the disappearance of MH370, MAS would be holding a ceremony to remember the flight and its passengers.However, Liow said, the government had still not made a decision on what could be done on the day to commemorate the flight and passengers of MH370."The government has not decided anything, all decisions must first be discussed with China and Australia," he said.The Boeing 777 flight MH370 with its 12 crew and 227 passengers disappeared from the radar screen while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, about an hour after departing the KL International Airport at about 12.41 am on March 8 last year.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced on March 24 last year that flight MH370 had ended in a secluded spot in the Southern Indian Ocean.On Jan 29 this year, the Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation announced that the misfortune was an accident based on international aviation rules and all 239 of its passengers and crew perished.Asked on the increase in Penang ferry fares, Liow said the matter was still at the proposal stage and he would be looking at public feedback."Every 10 years, the Penang Port Commission would review the ferry fares, the fares are still low. They were reviewed in 1996, 2005 and now (2015), before we impose any increase in fare, we will first get feedback from the public," he said.
