PARIS: Parasites resistant to the frontline malaria drug have spread westward from southeast Asia to just short of the Indian border -- a gateway to Africa, researchers warned Friday.A spread into India "would pose a serious threat to the global control and eradication of malaria," said a statement that accompanied the study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases."If drug resistance spreads from Asia to the African sub-continent, or emerges in Africa independently as we've seen several times before, millions of lives will be at risk."Since the Plasmodium parasite developed resistance to other drug types, artemisinin is the best and safest medicine to treat the estimated 198 million malaria infections that occurred worldwide in 2013.There were about 584,000 deaths, according to the UN's World Health Organization (WHO) -- 90 per cent of them in Africa.Artemisinin resistance has not yet been detected in Africa, but is a growing problem in southeast Asian nations like Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, and is suspected, though not proven, to have taken hold in South America.Myanmar, which carries the region's highest malaria burden, is considered the parasite's main route from southeast Asia to India and beyond.
International effort needed
For the study, researchers collected samples from patients at 55 treatment centres across Myanmar and border regions of Thailand and Bangladesh in 2013 and 2014, and examined them for telltale mutations in the K13 or "kelch" gene.Thirty-nine percent of 940 malaria samples carried a mutation, they found.The team then used the data to produce a map of estimated regional prevalence, and predicted resistance as far west as Homalin in Myanmar -- 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) from the frontier with India."This study highlights that the pace at which artemisinin resistance is spreading or emerging is alarming," said study co-author Philippe Guerin, director of the Worldwide Antimalarial Resistance Network."We need a more vigorous international effort to address this issue in border regions."The malaria parasite is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes.It multiplies in the human liver and infects red blood cells, and can be deadly if untreated.There have been two examples in history of malaria drugs becoming less effective due to the emergence of resistance -- costing millions of lives.From the 1950s to 1970s, chloroquine-resistant parasites spread from Asia to Africa.Chloroquine was replaced by sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), resistance to which emerged in western Cambodia and spread to Africa.SP was then followed by artemisinin, a drug derived by Chinese scientists from a herb called sweet wormwood.
Thousands at risk
"The new research shows that history is repeating itself with parasites resistant to artemisinin drugs, the mainstay of modern malaria treatment, now widespread in Myanmar," said Mike Turner of the Wellcome Trust which co-funded the study."We are facing the imminent threat of resistance spreading into India, with thousands of lives at risk."The team stressed there was no evidence that artemisinin resistance has indeed reached India, "however, few data are available".The WHO has recommended artemisinin-only treatments be withdrawn from the market in favour of combination therapies to protect against the spread of resistance, but they remain available in many countries.

Doctor Abdul Aziz bin Saeed, who heads the center coordinating the ministry's response to MERS, warned in early February that a rise in cases typically occurs around this time of year, when there are more juvenile camels circulating.The World Health Organization (WHO) has cited the preliminary results of studies indicating that people working with camels are at increased risk of infection from MERS-CoV, and young camels are particularly susceptible.But representatives of the WHO and other UN agencies who concluded a visit to the kingdom this week said there was an urgent need for greater understanding of the "animal/human interface"."There are so many aspects of the virus that are still unknown," said Berhe Tekola, of the Food and Agriculture Organization.The mission urged "improving disease prevention, especially in health facilities that continue to experience avoidable infections".Saudi Arabia has implemented a public education campaign about MERS but the statement said "efforts to educate professionals and the public are urgently needed." According to health ministry figures, a total of 916 people have been infected with MERS since it was first identified in the kingdom in 2012. INDIA: Married six times in the past six years.This was what happened to a 17-year-old girl from Hafeezbabanagar, India who was forcibly married off by her parents, reported Malaysian Nanban.The girl was married off by her father, Mohammed Akhbar who owned a pawnshop, together with the help of his third wide Niloufer, sister Mehrun-nisa and a marriage broker for Rs30,000 (RM1,600) to a man named Basheer in 2012.Three months later, Basher abandoned her, and girl was married off to a London-based man in Pune for RS30,000 (RM1,600).Her third and fourth marriage last year were in Mumbai to Saudi sheikhs for amounts ranging from Rs 50,000 (RM2,668) to Rs1 lakh (RM5,337) where the victim spent three months with each of her exploiters.Her fifth marriage was in Hyderabad to a Bahrain national for the sum of Rs1 lakh (RM5,337).On February 14, the girl was married off to a 50-year old man from Sudan, but managed to escape and approached the Hyderabad police with the help of a representative from a non- governmental organization on Wednesday.According to The Times of India the qazi who performed the latest marriage of the 17-year-old girl is on the run.This epidemic of buying young brides from poverty-stricken families is not only restricted to nationals of Arab countries, but the average Indian man too.It also reported that this was not a one-off case as several Indian nationals are paying money to poor families to enter into ‘contract marriages’ with ‘good looking girls’.Areas such as Talabakata, Vattepally, Nawabsabkunta, Amannagar, Shaheennagar and Yakutpura are some of the areas from where thousands of girls have been married off on contract basis, the portals sources said.For many of these girls, the future is dire, with nowhere to go- many of these girls decide to end the agony and the shame by committing suicide.

PARIS: Parasites resistant to the frontline malaria drug have spread westward from southeast Asia to just short of the Indian border -- a gateway to Africa, researchers warned Friday.A spread into India "would pose a serious threat to the global control and eradication of malaria," said a statement that accompanied the study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases."If drug resistance spreads from Asia to the African sub-continent, or emerges in Africa independently as we've seen several times before, millions of lives will be at risk."Since the Plasmodium parasite developed resistance to other drug types, artemisinin is the best and safest medicine to treat the estimated 198 million malaria infections that occurred worldwide in 2013.There were about 584,000 deaths, according to the UN's World Health Organization (WHO) -- 90 per cent of them in Africa.Artemisinin resistance has not yet been detected in Africa, but is a growing problem in southeast Asian nations like Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, and is suspected, though not proven, to have taken hold in South America.Myanmar, which carries the region's highest malaria burden, is considered the parasite's main route from southeast Asia to India and beyond.
International effort needed
For the study, researchers collected samples from patients at 55 treatment centres across Myanmar and border regions of Thailand and Bangladesh in 2013 and 2014, and examined them for telltale mutations in the K13 or "kelch" gene.Thirty-nine percent of 940 malaria samples carried a mutation, they found.The team then used the data to produce a map of estimated regional prevalence, and predicted resistance as far west as Homalin in Myanmar -- 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) from the frontier with India."This study highlights that the pace at which artemisinin resistance is spreading or emerging is alarming," said study co-author Philippe Guerin, director of the Worldwide Antimalarial Resistance Network."We need a more vigorous international effort to address this issue in border regions."The malaria parasite is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes.It multiplies in the human liver and infects red blood cells, and can be deadly if untreated.There have been two examples in history of malaria drugs becoming less effective due to the emergence of resistance -- costing millions of lives.From the 1950s to 1970s, chloroquine-resistant parasites spread from Asia to Africa.Chloroquine was replaced by sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), resistance to which emerged in western Cambodia and spread to Africa.SP was then followed by artemisinin, a drug derived by Chinese scientists from a herb called sweet wormwood.
Thousands at risk
"The new research shows that history is repeating itself with parasites resistant to artemisinin drugs, the mainstay of modern malaria treatment, now widespread in Myanmar," said Mike Turner of the Wellcome Trust which co-funded the study."We are facing the imminent threat of resistance spreading into India, with thousands of lives at risk."The team stressed there was no evidence that artemisinin resistance has indeed reached India, "however, few data are available".The WHO has recommended artemisinin-only treatments be withdrawn from the market in favour of combination therapies to protect against the spread of resistance, but they remain available in many countries.

Ten more people in Saudi Arabia have died from MERS over the past week, health ministry figures showed on Friday, after an international mission urged extra measures to combat the virus.Saudi Arabia is the country worst-hit by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).The latest deaths occurred between Feb. 20 and 26, adding to a surge of cases which has killed 27 people since the start of the month. Doctor Abdul Aziz bin Saeed, who heads the center coordinating the ministry's response to MERS, warned in early February that a rise in cases typically occurs around this time of year, when there are more juvenile camels circulating.The World Health Organization (WHO) has cited the preliminary results of studies indicating that people working with camels are at increased risk of infection from MERS-CoV, and young camels are particularly susceptible.But representatives of the WHO and other UN agencies who concluded a visit to the kingdom this week said there was an urgent need for greater understanding of the "animal/human interface"."There are so many aspects of the virus that are still unknown," said Berhe Tekola, of the Food and Agriculture Organization.The mission urged "improving disease prevention, especially in health facilities that continue to experience avoidable infections".Saudi Arabia has implemented a public education campaign about MERS but the statement said "efforts to educate professionals and the public are urgently needed." According to health ministry figures, a total of 916 people have been infected with MERS since it was first identified in the kingdom in 2012. Of those, 392 have died.More than 20 countries have been affected by the virus but most cases have been linked to the Middle East. (+++++)

GUIUAN, Philippines: French President Francois Hollande on Friday met victims of the biggest-ever typhoon to make landfall and promised them he would secure an international agreement to limit climate change.Hollande toured the Philippine fishing town of Guiuan in the east of the archipelago where, in 2013, Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,300 people."I promise you, we'll succeed in France because we must obtain agreement," Hollande told a crowd at a town school, referring to a UN conference on climate change late this year in Paris.The goal of the conference is a legally binding, global agreement on climate change, to keep a rise of global temperatures to a minimum to prevent sea level rise, the melting of ice caps and severe weather."The world will act for you ... we want success in Paris," Hollande said.Typhoon Haiyan caused extensive destruction and left about a million people homeless. Thousands are still living in tents and other shelters.Climate scientists have cautioned against blaming individual storms such as Haiyan on climate change.
