Islamic State in Syria abducts at least 90 Christians: monitor-Reuters-FEB 24,15-YAHOONEWS
AMMAN (Reuters) - Islamic State militants have abducted at least 90 people from Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria, a monitoring group tracking violence in Syria said on Tuesday. The British- based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said they carried out dawn raids on rural villages inhabited by the ancient Christian minority west of Hasaka, a city mainly held by the Kurds.Syrian Kurdish militia launched two offensives against the militants in northeast Syria on Sunday, helped by U.S.-led air strikes and Iraqi peshmerga. This part of Syria borders territory controlled by Islamic State in Iraq, where it committed atrocities last year against the Yazidi religious minority.Islamic State did not confirm the kidnappings. Supporters posted photos online of the group's fighters in camouflage attire looking at maps and firing machine guns. The website said the photos were from Tel Tamr, a town near where the Observatory said the abductions occurred. Many Assyrian Christians have emigrated in the nearly four-year-long conflict in which more than 200,000 have people have been killed. Before the arrival of Kurds and Arab nomadic tribes at the end of the 19th century, Christians formed the majority in Syria's Jazeera area, which includes Hasaka.Sunday's offensive by Kurdish YPG militia reached within five km (3 miles) of Tel Hamis, an Islamic State-controlled town southeast of Qamishli, the Observatory said.At least 14 IS fighters died in the offensive, in which Assyrians fought alongside Kurds, it added. Eight civilians were also killed in heavy shelling by the Kurdish side, which seized several Arab villages from Islamic State control.Last year, Islamic State fighters abducted several Assyrians in retaliation for some of them fighting alongside the YPG. Most were released after long negotiations.
RELIEVING PRESSURE
Military experts said militants were trying to open a new front to relieve pressure on Islamic State after several losses since being driven from the Syrian town of Kobani near the border with Turkey."Islamic State are losing in several areas so they want to wage an attack on a new area," said retired Jordanian general Fayez Dwiri.Since driving IS from Kobani, Kurdish forces, backed by other Syrian armed groups, have pursued the group's fighters as far as their provincial stronghold of Raqqa.A resident of Hasaka, jointly held by the Syrian government and the Kurds, said hundreds of families had arrived in recent days from surrounding Christian villages and Arab Bedouins were arriving from areas along the border."Families are coming to Hasaka seeking safety," said Abdul Rahman al-Numai, a textile trader said by telephone.(Additional reporting by Oliver Holmes in Beirut; Editing by Tom Heneghan)
Boko Haram targets region where powerful empire once reigned-AFP-By Ben Simon-FEB 24,15-YAHOONEWS
Lagos (AFP) - Long before Boko Haram's uprising plunged the region into crisis, the area below Lake Chad was part of a powerful Islamic empire, known for religious piety and unity spanning roughly 1,000 years. The scope of the Kanem-Bornu empire changed repeatedly from its founding in the ninth century to its downfall in the 1890s but at its height the kingdom included modern day northeast Nigeria, as well as parts of neigh bouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger.Boko Haram, which has claimed to be fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria, has widened its insurgency through attacks in Cameroon and, more recently, Chad and Niger, where the group launched its first-ever strikes this month. Those hardest hit by the violence are ethnic Kanuris, a community represented in all four nations and which also led the Kanem-Bornu empire.Experts say that Boko Haram has at times tried to invoke the Kanem-Bornu legacy, recalling a pious pre-colonial empire that transcended European-imposed borders to justify attacks against targets it deems un-Islamic.But that strategy is almost certain to fail as the insurgents' relentless massacres and kidnappings have destroyed any credibility they may have had among the Kanuri, analysts said.Citing the fallen empire to legitimise a modern jihad "will not catch on at all", said Professor Sidiqque Mohammed, of Nigeria's Ahmadu Bello University.Boko Haram's leaders "have no sense of history", he told AFP.
- A 'great empire' -
Kanem-Bornu was a centre of Islamic scholarship, attracting visitors from across the Sahel and Arab areas further east, according to Vincent Hiribarren, a professor at King's College, London, and author of the forthcoming book, "A History of Borno".The empire's remarkable cohesion over a millennium was partly forged through a commitment to Islam, he said."It is something (the Kauri) are very proud of", he said, adding that people in the region often speak of "the great empire".A source of particular pride was the empire's continued independence in the face of advances by a neighbouring caliphate founded by Usman Dan Fodio, a revered 19th-century jihadist. In carving out what was one of the largest states in West Africa, Dan Fodio conquered most of modern-day northern Nigeria and chunks of neighbouring states. His caliphate based in the city of Sokoto fell to British colonialists in 1903.But Sokoto's attempt to topple Kanem-Bornu was eventually repelled by the empire's mostly Kanuri forces. Some experts say this bitter history still strains relations between the Kanuri and the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups that dominate the rest of northern Nigeria. But it also complicates efforts to understand the recent rhetoric used by Boko Haram.A video message from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, believed to be Kanuri, released on February 17 included a celebratory reference to Dan Fodio.
- Confused messages -
Hiribarren and other academics said there is evidence of Shekau and the group's late founder Mohammed Yusuf citing Kanem-Bornu as part of their ideological rejection of the Nigerian state. The precise record is unclear with respect to public messages, including Yusuf's sermons which were widely distributed before his 2009 death and videos released by Shekau. But most agree that some Boko Haram commanders have invoked the great Kanuri Islamic legacy in trying to attract or indoctrinate new fighters."It is a reappropriation of a glorious past," said Hiribarren.Yan St-Pierre, who heads the Modern Security Consulting Group, agreed that Boko Haram has used Kanem-Bornu to create "historical legitimacy".But, he noted, the insurgency has demonstrated an "ideological devolution" since its founding in 2002 and this use of history probably has limited impact now.The Islamist movement which began under Yusuf, partly drawing members from those frustrated with Nigeria's woeful governance, has over the last five years morphed into a ruthless rebellion that deliberately targets defenceless civilians, including children.Any claim by Shekau or his deputies to be fighting for the reclamation of Kanem-Bornu is also undermined by Boko Haram's multiple assassination attempts against the empire's living heir, Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, known as the Shehu of Borno, who is Nigeria's number three Islamic cleric.Cross-border attacks have little to do with empire restoration and more to do with revenge against the militaries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger who are now cooperating with Nigeria to crush the insurgency, St-Pierre said. For Hiribarren, the spreading conflict means the Nigerian militants are being exposed to a wider network of Kanuri people who share "a cultural community of people who speak the same language and who used to be part of the same kingdom."Is Boko Haram capitalising on this? I'm not so sure," he said.
Spain breaks up online network recruiting young women for IS-POSTED: 24 Feb 2015 20:08-cna
The arrests came as European nations scramble to halt a surge in young people wanting to travelling to Iraq and Syria to fight with the extremists.MADRID: Spain said Tuesday (Feb 24) it had broken up an online network accused of recruiting young women to join Islamic State militants fighting in Iraq and Syria and arrested four suspects. The arrests came as European nations scramble to halt a surge in young people wanting to travelling to Iraq and Syria to fight with the extremists. Two of the suspects were arrested in Melilla, the Spanish enclave neighbouring Morocco, in the latest operation by Spain's authorities targeting such recruiting networks. The others were detained in Girona and Barcelona in Spain's northeast. The two arrested in Melilla were said to be behind the creation and operation of several internet platforms spreading propaganda, particularly for the Islamic State group, the interior ministry said in a statement."In line with the strategy of the Daesh terrorist group, they focused on the recruitment of women who, after a process of indoctrination, would end up joining the terrorist group in conflict zones," it said, referring to the Arabic name for IS.Private home visits were also organised for recruiting purposes and a number of young people had begun preparations to travel to war zones, the ministry said. One of those arrested ran a "virtual community" with Islamic State propaganda and more than 1,000 subscribers, it said.On Facebook, he had a "multitude of subscribers" outside Spain, including Latin America and countries such as Belgium, France, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States, the statement said. One of the suspects arrested in Spain's northeast was described as an Islamic State sympathiser-turned-propagandist. The other was said to have published video to recruit potential militants.Authorities were working to establish links between the two in Melilla and those in Spain's northeast.Spain has dismantled several similar networks, particularly in Melilla and its other African enclave, Ceuta. The two enclaves constitute the only land borders between Africa and Europe. Authorities estimate that around 100 Spanish nationals have joined extremist fighters in Iraq and Syria, a lower number than those from France, Britain and Germany.Britain says some 500 people have travelled from the country to join militant groups, while France says about 1,400 residents have either joined the extremist cause in Syria and Iraq or were planning to do so.France on Monday announced that it had confiscated the passports of six suspected would-be extremists and would ban another 40 from travelling.- AFP/dl
02/23/2015-“Beware not to fall into the trap of ISIS's threats”-Sako, the Chaldean Patriarch of Baghdad-In an interview with Zenit the Chaldean Patriarch of Baghdad, Louis Raphaël I Sako, said: “It’s better not to start a war, which then has no end”-Domenico Agasso jr
Rome-“Faith is not to believe in an ideology. ISIS also has an ideology, but to believe means to love and to love means to live. This touches my heart. I think that today we are in need of an experience of faith as love rather than a speculative faith.” Mgr. Louis Raphaël I Sako, Chaldean Patriarch of Baghdad said this in an interview with Zenit during his brief stay at Padre Pio's Hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo where he underwent minor surgery.During the interview, Sako described today’s wars, tensions and - as far as Christians are concerned - persecutions as such: “There is meaning -- the priority of faith. These people sacrifice themselves for love of what lives. This blood has a very great and profound meaning. As Jesus said: “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Jesus is the model for them. The blood of the martyrs is a great strength and a source of hope for us. As Tertullian said: “The blood of martyrs is the seed of new Christians.” So we can say that it’s death, but it’s also life. As the Lord also said: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul” (Matthew 10:28). In my opinion, the West must see in the model of these martyrs a call, an appeal to conversion, to religiosity and to faith. If there are problems here today it’s because there is a void. Western society is losing its religious values; there is a culture of individualism, of pleasure, of money that does not satisfy man who has a tendency to the absolute.”Sako then went on to talk about the approach to the Koran: “In the Koran, there are the so-called “verses of the sword,” which in a certain way motivate the use of violence. Let us recall that Mohammed himself turned to the conquest of Mecca with an army. And the same dimension of the jihad goes from a mere spiritual, interior struggle – we think in the Christian realm of the Desert Fathers --, to a struggle that singles out the enemy outside. Muslims must read these texts in a symbolic way. They must be able to engage in exegesis. They don’t have a hermeneutic. When ISIS decapitates someone, it does so according to an interpretation of the Islamic law. For them, God has said this. Everything is divine and somewhat magical. They do it in keeping with their faith.”The Patriarch then spoke about the dialogue situation between Christians and Muslims in the diocese of Baghdad and in the Iraqi Church in general: “The dimension of suffering, on the purely human plane, brings the two religions close. For instance, in Baghdad there is a Hospital, “Saint Raphael’s,” where Muslims and Christians are received. And in every room of the hospital there is a cross and also an image of Our Lady. Padre Pio is also a reason for encounter between Muslims and Christians. In the Palestinian neighbourhood of Baghdad, in the Parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary -- where Auxiliary Bishop Warduni is the parish priest --, there is a statue of Padre Pio. People know him. Both Christians and Muslims pause to pray there. These are small examples that show us that dialogue is possible. It is up to us Christians to take the initiative. The Christian presence in Iraq is important. We help Muslims to open themselves.”Sako also commented on the Libyan crisis, the advance of the Caliphate and the strong impact the reference to Rome had within its communication strategy (“We’re south of Rome,” ISIS said): “It’s a trap. Italy must be careful not to engage in war. One can choose to control the border but, perhaps, it’s more important to monitor those who are there. The sleeper fundamentalist groups are more dangerous. It’s better not to start a war, which then has no end as the Americans did in Iraq. And now we also have the war in Syria of four years.”Sako quoted Pope Francis: “Today we find ourselves before a wounded man. We have nine spiritual pathologies. It is no accident that Pope Francis speaks of a Church as a field hospital after a battle. The intervention of Western military forces in Iraq entailed the destruction of everything, thinking that it would be possible to begin something new. But how? Perhaps the question wasn’t studied well. There was the change of regime, but the people expected something more. Where is the security? There is no life without security. It is necessary to educate people to freedom and to responsibility, to democracy. A war is always something evil and it opens new wounds, many of which are not yet healed.” And speaking of Francis, Sako said he felt the Pope’s closeness to the Iraqi people: “I have met with him three times. He has always encouraged me and given me strength. He also sent two messages, a video message and a letter. The letter was read in the presence of Cardinal Barbarin; there was a procession and more than 5,000 Christians gathered in church. He is very close; he prays for us. Recently he also sent Cardinal Filoni as his Special Envoy.”Sako also explained how the Iraqi Church is looking after its suffering people: “Service to the poor and the least among us; protection and preservation of the Christian identity and then dialogue with the Muslim religion. Then we must give priority to displaced families. We have close to 120,000 Christians and more than 2 million Muslims. We ask ourselves how we can be close and present in the midst of the suffering people. We give them to eat, to drink, we give them medicines, we do what we can. The Church alone does this. The CEI [Italian Episcopal Conference] has helped us, also the Vatican and Caritas. The people are very struck when the Church is close. In the same way, however, we are called to defend and protect the Christian presence, the rights of Christians. On this point, an effort is being made with the Iraqi central government, because the Christian presence is important historically. Then we seek dialogue with the representatives of the Muslim religious authority.”
Iraqi Army Downs 2 UK Planes Carrying Weapons for “ISIL”-February 24, 2015 by Jack Blood
Iraqi Army Downs 2 UK Planes Carrying Weapons for ISIL –Iraqi lawmaker says US prefers chaotic situation in Anbar Province — which is near cities of Karbala and Baghdad — as it does not want ISIL crisis to come to an end | 23 Feb 2015 | Iraq’s army has shot down two British planes as they were carrying weapons for the ISIL terrorists in Al-Anbar province, a senior lawmaker disclosed on Monday. “The Iraqi Parliament’s National Security and Defense Committee has access to the photos of both planes that are British and have crashed while they were carrying weapons for the ISIL,” Head of the committee Hakem al-Zameli said, according to a Monday report of the Arabic-language information center of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq. He said the Iraqi parliament has asked London for explanations in this regard. The senior Iraqi legislator further unveiled that the government in Baghdad is receiving daily reports from people and security forces in al-Anbar province on numerous flights by the US-led coalition planes that airdrop weapons and supplies for ISIL in terrorist-held areas.ISIS plans to capture Lebanese territories, declare emirate – report | 23 Feb 2015 | Islamic State militants are planning to extend their positions to Lebanon and declare an “Islamic emirate” there, Lebanese media says. 02/23/2015-vatican insider-Schevchuk: “What is going on in Ukraine is biggest catastrophe since World War II”-Russian vehicles seized in battle-Interview with the Archbishop Major of the Greek Catholic Church who speaks of at least two million displaced, thousands of victims, many children among the refugees and about a possible intervention from the Pope-Francesco Peloso
Rome-“The Pope may take concrete action” regarding the conflict that is devastating Ukraine, an international initiative to bring an end to the fighting. This is according to His Beatitude Svjatoslav Shevchuk, Archbishop Major of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.Bishops representing Ukraine’s Greek Catholic and Latin Churches were recently in the Vatican for their ad limina visits.Mgr. Shevchuk met the press and answered questions put to him by journalists. Amongst other things he stressed that the humanitarian situation is worsening as a result of the war and he reiterated that what is being witnessed in Ukraine “is not a local conflict, but an external assault”. He also said he informed Francis that the expression “fratricidal war” which he used in recent days “has hurt the sensibilities of the Ukrainians” as it seemed to echo what the Russians said about the war in Ukraine being internal conflict.Archbishop Shevchuk also mentioned the words the Pope addressed to Ukraine’s bishops - “I am at your side and at your service” - and pointed out that the Pope has undoubtedly played an important role in calling for an end to the Ukraine crisis, also in his recent conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Greek Catholic bishop said he asked the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity to encourage dialogue among the churches in favour of peace and praised the initiative taken in this direction by the World Council of Churches. He had some harsh words in store for Putin and Russian propaganda: “The chains of falsehood need to be broken the leader of the Greek Catholic Church said. “In Russia nothing is being said about the thousands of soldiers who have died in Ukraine,” he added.Mgr. Shevchuk, what is going on in Ukraine? “There is a war going on in Ukraine; it is a foreign invasion, a war that was imposed on us from the outside. It is not a civil conflict, a disagreement among Ukrainian citizens, what we have is an undeclared war. There are thousands of refugees in our dioceses and eparchies, 6,000 people have been killed in armed conflict, more than 12,000 have been wounded and numerous people have been affected by what specialists call ‘post-traumatic stress disorder’.” What did you ask the Pope for during the recent ad limina visit? “We asked him to come to Ukraine, we know it might be too much to ask for but it really would be such a prophetic gesture. The Holy Father listened to us very carefully and immediately asked the bishops of Donetsk and Crimea to talk about their experiences. The bishops felt that the Pope made them feel welcome, they felt encouraged and reassured by him about the fact they made the right choice: the choice to stand by our people, to listen carefully to the voice of our people.”The Pope talked about respect for international law but he also asked bishops not to get involved in politics and spoke out against those who get rich by exploiting the crisis. How do you view this advice? The Holy See defends Ukraine’s sovereignty and integrity, international law; if a country annexes Crimea it violates international law. This cannot be called an internal conflict. We haven’t come to represent political parties, we are the voice of civil society. We aren’t telling the president what he should do. We are also asking for social justice, the Ukrainian people are asking for reform, justice reforms for example, because we have unfair judges. There is still talk about the oligarchs, a revolution of dignity has broken out against them ; this oligarchical system has led Ukraine to disaster.”There is a war going on in Ukraine, but what are the consequences on a humanitarian level? “The war always brings destruction and misery. The Ukrainian economy is really flopping and is facing a crisis. Officially, the UN has declared that there are a million displaced in Ukraine but church bodies tell us that this figure is in actual fact double. Almost 600,000 people have been forced to flee to other countries. The Ukrainian government is unable to manage this situation. I call this situation a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale that has not been witnessed in Eastern Europe since World War II. For this reason I have asked the Holy Father and various bodies of the Roman Curia to launch an appeal for humanitarian aid on an international level. We have managed to provide shelter to 40,000 people in our Ukrainian Caritas centres, but this is not enough: there are 140,000 children among the displaced and then there are the wounded. So in order to really save human lives we need solidarity on an international level."What concrete actions are you taking as a Church, as Christians? “Even in these tough war conditions we need to remain Christian. A Christian is a person who trusts in God because hope comes not from politicians but from our Lord. At the same time we must turn our faith into action. I told the Holy Father that we have an immense treasure to protect in Ukraine now: religious freedom. Even in these tragic conditions there is solidarity among the various denominations – Orthodox, Catholics, Protestants -, there is a practical ecumenism, because we are all doing the same thing: saving human lives. No one asks these people in need: are you Catholic, Orthodox or Muslim? No, that is not what we do. We are united in order to serve.”What was your reaction to the Pope’s appeal for possible peace? “We welcomed it as a big challenge and we welcomed it with trust. Because we really are working for peace to stop the war. We certainly need to use all means possible in order to achieve this. We are waiting for an agreement to be reached on an international diplomatic level. We have seen that the Minsk agreement failed because it was not a ceasefire. Let us hope that the Holy Father’s appeal will be heard by everyone, not just the victims in Ukraine but also the powerful around the world.”
