Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas
Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. Israeli Hebrew – and English – language media outlets reported early Friday that Hamas’s offensive tunnel network – which is now known to have been composed of over two dozen attack tunnels dug underneath Israel’s border with the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip – was set to be activated during the Jewish High Holidays in the form of a mass terror attack. Israeli security sources, citing information acquired in interrogations of captured Hamas fighters, described a scenario under which hundreds of heavily armed Hamas fighters would have spilled out into Israel in the dead of night and within 10 minutes have been in a position to infiltrate several sparsely populated and lightly guarded Israeli communities. Palestinian terrorists would then – per an assessment conveyed by i24news – have sought to “kill and kidnap as many Israelis as they could.” Details of plot, which were first published by the Hebrew-language Ma’ariv, described it as set to take place when Israelis would have been celebrating the Jewish New Year, on or around September 24. Observers noted that attack scenarios lined up with recently revealed data about the scope and nature of the offensive tunnel network. The IDF recently published a map showing that the tunnels were created to empty out on both sides of nearby communities. Israeli military officials had already reported that the tunnel entrances are stocked with tranquilizers, handcuffs, ropes, and other materials useful for subduing abducted civilians and soldiers. And the known cost of the infrastructure – with each tunnel costing roughly $1 million – implies that Hamas leaders were planning a coordinated mega-attack, since use of even one of the tunnels was likely to trigger an Israeli retaliation against the entire network. Revelations regarding the magnitude of the planned tunnel attack are thought to have played a critical role in the Israeli government’s rejection of a ceasefire proposed late Friday by Secretary of State John Kerry, which would have prohibited the Israelis from degrading remaining attack tunnels.
It was a modest swearing in ceremony for the 10th president of Israel, as the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict rages. Reuven Rivlin officially took the ceremonial role from his predecessor Shimon Peres, who had summed up a seven-year term. Rivlin and Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein announced earlier in the week that the affair would be toned down in light of Operation Protective Edge. “When our IDF soldiers are in battle and Israeli citizens are under rocket fire, we decided to make the swearing-in ceremony a more modest affair,” they said in a statement. There are various reasons why tunnels are used. Here in America we mainly see them as a means of enabling transportation such as mountain tunnels for trains and cars. We also have tunnels that go under water, such as in New York for transportation. Or we even build tunnels beneath cities for mass transportation like Atlanta’s MARTA or the Metro in Washington DC. However, in times of warfare, tunnels can be used for escape prisoners — or for far more nefarious means.Such is the case with the tunnels of Hamas. What Israel knew to be an existing problem has turned out to be sometime quite complex and dangerous – in fact, immensely dangerous. Where did the materials come from and who was behind supporting this intricate plan? Questions I would propose Obama is too busy golfing and celebrating his birthday to be bothered to answer – or even ask. And why would the Obama administration, knowing this information, support a cease-fire with the Hamas terrorist group? The system of tunnels had to cost millions of dollars and the manpower required isn’t trivial, nor is the construction design. One just has to believe this is financed by Qatar and others, and militarily supported by Iran — to whom we are releasing more millions of dollars as sanctions are eased.But how could John Kerry, knowing this battlefield intelligence, promise to give Hamas $47 million American taxpayer dollars? A three-member panel appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will investigate allegations that Israel violated humanitarian law in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge, Bloomberg reported on Monday.The commission of inquiry will be headed by Canada’s William Schabas, an international law professor at Middlesex University in London who served on the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 2002 to 2004, the UN council said in an e-mailed statement to the news website.The other members are Amal Alamuddin, a British-Lebanese lawyer who previously worked at the International Court of Justice, and Doudou Diene of Senegal, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance from 2002 to 2008.Several weeks ago, the UNHRC decided to launch an investigation into the IDF's operations in Gaza as "a travesty". The Turkish group IHH said on Monday it would send a new flotilla of ships to “break Israel's siege of Gaza”, four years after the deadly storming of its vessel by Israeli commandos, according to AFP.IHH, which organized the first flotilla, said in a statement quoted by the news agency that activists from 12 countries had met in Istanbul and taken the decision to send the ships "in the shadow of the latest Israeli aggression on Gaza.""As most governments are complicit, the responsibility falls on civil society to challenge the Israeli blockade on Gaza," it said.The IHH would hold a press conference on Tuesday, it added. The group is considered to be close to the Turkish government.Monday’s statement comes several weeks after the head of the IHH announced that his organization is planning a new flotilla and has embarked on legal procedures and paperwork required to obtain a permit for the trip.In the 2010 flotilla, the Mavi Marmara, which claimed to be providing "humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza," defied orders to turn around and dock at the Ashdod port. Israeli Hebrew – and English – language media outlets reported early Friday that Hamas’s offensive tunnel network – which is now known to have been composed of over two dozen attack tunnels dug underneath Israel’s border with the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip – was set to be activated during the Jewish High Holidays in the form of a mass terror attack. Israeli security sources, citing information acquired in interrogations of captured Hamas fighters, described a scenario under which hundreds of heavily armed Hamas fighters would have spilled out into Israel in the dead of night and within 10 minutes have been in a position to infiltrate several sparsely populated and lightly guarded Israeli communities. Palestinian terrorists would then – per an assessment conveyed by i24news – have sought to “kill and kidnap as many Israelis as they could.” Details of plot, which were first published by the Hebrew-language Ma’ariv, described it as set to take place when Israelis would have been celebrating the Jewish New Year, on or around September 24. Observers noted that attack scenarios lined up with recently revealed data about the scope and nature of the offensive tunnel network. The IDF recently published a map showing that the tunnels were created to empty out on both sides of nearby communities. Israeli military officials had already reported that the tunnel entrances are stocked with tranquilizers, handcuffs, ropes, and other materials useful for subduing abducted civilians and soldiers. And the known cost of the infrastructure – with each tunnel costing roughly $1 million – implies that Hamas leaders were planning a coordinated mega-attack, since use of even one of the tunnels was likely to trigger an Israeli retaliation against the entire network. Revelations regarding the magnitude of the planned tunnel attack are thought to have played a critical role in the Israeli government’s rejection of a ceasefire proposed late Friday by Secretary of State John Kerry, which would have prohibited the Israelis from degrading remaining attack tunnels.
It was a modest swearing in ceremony for the 10th president of Israel, as the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict rages. Reuven Rivlin officially took the ceremonial role from his predecessor Shimon Peres, who had summed up a seven-year term. Rivlin and Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein announced earlier in the week that the affair would be toned down in light of Operation Protective Edge. “When our IDF soldiers are in battle and Israeli citizens are under rocket fire, we decided to make the swearing-in ceremony a more modest affair,” they said in a statement. Rivlin’s initiation speech referred to the IDF operation in Gaza. “We are gathered here today with a very clear message to our enemies: You have not overcome us and you will not do so,” he said. “We are not fighting against the Palestinian people, and we are not at war with Islam; we are fighting against terrorism.” Rivlin spoke about his hope for peace for Israel and its neighbors. “The day will come when we will dwell here in peace and harmony with each other; the day will come when there will be peace between Israel and all its neighbors,” he said. There are various reasons why tunnels are used. Here in America we mainly see them as a means of enabling transportation such as mountain tunnels for trains and cars. We also have tunnels that go under water, such as in New York for transportation. Or we even build tunnels beneath cities for mass transportation like Atlanta’s MARTA or the Metro in Washington DC. However, in times of warfare, tunnels can be used for escape prisoners — or for far more nefarious means.Such is the case with the tunnels of Hamas. What Israel knew to be an existing problem has turned out to be sometime quite complex and dangerous – in fact, immensely dangerous. Some of these tunnels were as deep as 30 meters underground.”As you look at the pictures you must ask yourself, over a five-year period how was all of this financed? Where did the materials come from and who was behind supporting this intricate plan? Questions I would propose Obama is too busy golfing and celebrating his birthday to be bothered to answer – or even ask. And why would the Obama administration, knowing this information, support a cease-fire with the Hamas terrorist group? The system of tunnels had to cost millions of dollars and the manpower required isn’t trivial, nor is the construction design. One just has to believe this is financed by Qatar and others, and militarily supported by Iran — to whom we are releasing more millions of dollars as sanctions are eased.But how could John Kerry, knowing this battlefield intelligence, promise to give Hamas $47 million American taxpayer dollars? I can surely surmise that if Hamas is not completely destroyed, those funds will go to rebuilding these tunnels.What is even more disconcerting, according to the Daily Caller, is that observers note that attack scenarios lined up with recently revealed data about the sophistication, scope and nature of the offensive tunnel network. As previously reported here, this sophistication and know-how is being copied right now by Mexico-based Hezbollah agents along the southern US border. Tunnels in Southern Lebanon, as in our border terrain, are significantly more difficult to detect than those in the sandy terrain of the Gaza Strip.I have stated for quite some time that we have an Islamist threat from Iran right here in our own hemisphere by way of Hezbollah and Al Quds forces. I find it rather interesting that all of a sudden we’re being distracted with Central American “children” flooding across our border and sucking down our U.S. Border Patrol resources — and Obama does nothing, while he’s trying to force Israel to back down off Hamas — and refusing to put our National Guard on the border. A three-member panel appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will investigate allegations that Israel violated humanitarian law in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge, Bloomberg reported on Monday.The commission of inquiry will be headed by Canada’s William Schabas, an international law professor at Middlesex University in London who served on the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 2002 to 2004, the UN council said in an e-mailed statement to the news website.The other members are Amal Alamuddin, a British-Lebanese lawyer who previously worked at the International Court of Justice, and Doudou Diene of Senegal, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance from 2002 to 2008.Several weeks ago, the UNHRC decided to launch an investigation into the IDF's operations in Gaza as "a travesty". The decision to launch an inquiry was made shortly after UNHRC chief Navi Pillay said that there is a "strong possibility" that Israel was violating international law through Operation Protective Edge.The Prime Minister’s Office slammed the UNHRC’s decision, saying it is “a travesty and should be rejected by decent people everywhere"."Rather than investigate Hamas, which is committing a double war crime by firing rockets at Israeli civilians while hiding behind Palestinian civilians, the UNHRC calls for an investigation of Israel, which has gone to unprecedented lengths to keep Palestinian civilians out of harm's way, including by dropping leaflets, making phone calls and sending text messages," the statement continued."The UNHRC should be launching an investigation into Hamas's decision to turn hospitals into military command centers, use schools as weapons depots and place missile batteries next to playgrounds, private homes and mosques," it added, referring to numerous documented incidents in the past few days since the IDF launched the ground phase of Operation Protective Edge.The statement went further, saying that by effectively granting terrorist groups impunity, the UNHRC was indirectly encouraging the continued use of human shields, in a perverse betrayal of its stated mission."By failing to condemn Hamas's systematic use of human shields and by blaming Israel for the deaths that are caused by this grotesque human shields policy, the UNHRC is sending a message to Hamas and terror organizations everywhere that using civilians as human shields is an effective strategy."In 2009, after Operation Cast Lead, the UN appointed Judge Richard Goldstone to head a similar investigation. Goldstone, who accused Israel at the time of committing war crimes in Gaza, later retracted the core accusation of his report.Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman has said that the UNHRC has long ago turned into the rights council for terrorists."We will continue to fight terror and continue to fight the hypocrisy and anti-Semitism of bodies such as the UNHRC,” said Liberman.“When countries such as Cuba, Venezuela and the like, who do not know the concept of human rights, point an accusing finger towards us, it is a sign that we are doing the right things," he added.

Economics Minister Naftali Bennett, who is a member of the Diplomacy-Security Cabinet, said Monday that in the end, there will be no alternative to decisively defeating Hamas in Gaza."At this point, the Cabinet took the turn that it took, but in the end, Hamas's declared aim is the destruction of Israel, so sooner or later we will have to go inside, into Gaza,” he told Channel 2.As for cooperation with Palestinian Authority (PA) chief Mahmoud Abbas, aka Abu Mazen, and the possibility that control of Gaza will be handed over to the PA, Bennett said that “Abu Mazen is a partner for terror, he is a partner in a unity government with Hamas, which fired 3,400 rockets at us, and he funds Hamas terrorists in jail."The entire direction of a Palestinian state is over,” Bennett emphasized. “Hamas have ascertained the death of the Palestinian state. All of Israel's citizens know that a Palestinian state would crush Israel's economy and bring tunnels to Kfar Saba and rockets on central Israel.”Bennett reminded viewers that the PA chairman is leading international lawsuits against Israel, and has turned to UN institutions in order to harm Israel.Bennett implicitly criticized cabinet members for being overly optimistic at a certain point in the military operation. “I think there was a very big and baseless optimism in the initial phases, as if Hamas is down for the count. In the end, a decisive victory needs to be brought about, forcefully and continuously, without letup and without lulls.”"I am leading a policy of victory, strength and deterrence, and not all sorts of technologies, but rather, a policy that will cause Hamas and all of our surroundings to understand that you do not mess with Israel," he said. "This has to be brought back, the deterrent approach, or we will not be here.”

The Foreign Press Association on Monday lodged a strong protest accusing the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas of harassment and of threatening foreign reporters working in Gaza.The association for journalists working in Israel and the Palestinian territories said Hamas authorities and their representatives employed "blatant, incessant, forceful and unorthodox methods" against visiting international journalists covering the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.The FPA, in a statement, protested "in the strongest terms"."The international media are not advocacy organizations and cannot be prevented from reporting by means of threats or pressure, thereby denying their readers and viewers an objective picture from the ground," it said."In several cases, foreign reporters working in Gaza have been harassed, threatened or questioned over stories or information they have reported through their news media or by means of social media."Hundreds of foreign journalists travelled to Gaza during more than a month of fighting between Israel and the Hamas, with perhaps 10 percent reporting difficulties from the authorities, FPA said.Those who experienced threats were reluctant to speak publicly for fear of repercussions.It said one photographer spoke of being beaten up and having a camera smashed; a news photographer had a camera confiscated for three days and Hamas also asked people to remove tweets and YouTube videos.A European company was also threatened in the middle of the street when filming an anti-Hamas demonstration.The FPA said Hamas was also trying to put in place a "vetting" procedure that would, in effect, allow for the blacklisting of specific journalists."Such a procedure is vehemently opposed by the FPA," it said.Several news organizations reported receiving a request Monday from Hamas for the name of journalists, their company, where they are based, their contact details and the name of their translator to "facilitate and organize" their work.More and more reports emerging from Gaza in recent days back the Israeli government's claims that Hamas is deliberately carrying out attacks from within densely-populated civilian areas.An Indian TV report exposed terrorists setting up and launching a rocket just meters away from a hotel where members of the international media were staying, in the middle of a crowded residential area.Like the tiny handful of other journalists who have defied Hamas orders not to report anything negative about them, the NDTV report was only aired after the news team had left the Gaza Strip and were free from any risk of intimidation or worse at the hands of Hamas's security forces.A France 24 TV journalist - who famously ducked for cover during a live interview when a Hamas rocket was fired right next to him - has also gone on the record to report how the rocket which caught him off guard was launched in a crowded civilian area and right in front of a UN building.
