COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A gunman opened fire on a Copenhagen cultural center, killing one man and wounding three police officers in what authorities called a terror attack against a free speech event featuring an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad. A second shooting near a synagogue hours later wounded three, and police said it wasn't clear whether the incidents were linked.After searching for the first gunman for hours, police reported the second shooting in downtown Copenhagen after midnight Sunday. One person was shot in the head and two police officers were shot in the arms and legs, police said. The gunman fled on foot.Sebastian Zepeda, a 19-year-old visitor from London, said he didn't want to leave his hotel room after hearing of the first shooting and was text messaging with his mother when the second shooting happened on the street below."I was on my bed and I heard gunshots. And my heart raced," Zepeda said. "All of a sudden the road was packed with police."Witnesses in a bar across the street from the synagogue said they saw special police teams moving in with automatic rifles."We looked out the window and saw this guy lying on the street," said Rasmus Thau Riddersholm, 33. "We were told by police to stay in the back of the room, away from the windows and doors."The earlier shooting came a month after extremists killed 12 people at a satirical newspaper in Paris that had sparked Muslim outrage with its depictions of Muhammad.There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the first shooting, which took place shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday. Danish police said the gunman used an automatic weapon to shoot through the windows of the Krudttoenden cultural center, which TV footage showed were riddled with bullet holes. The gunman then fled in a carjacked Volkswagen Polo that was found later a few kilometers (miles) away, police said.They said the victim was a man about 40 who was inside the cultural center. He has not yet been identified. COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - One civilian was killed and three police were wounded on Saturday in shooting at a public meeting in the Danish capital Copenhagen attended by the controversial Swedish artist Lars Vilks, police and the Danish Ritzau news agency reported.Danish police confirmed one civilian had been killed in a shooting and said the suspects had fled in a car.Ritzau said both Vilks and the French ambassador, who was also attending, were both unharmed, but that three police had been wounded. The gathering was billed as a debate on art and blasphemy.Just over a month ago, 17 people were killed in France in three days of violence that began when two Islamist gunmen burst into the Paris offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, opening fire in revenge for its publication of satirical images of the Prophet Mohammad.Vilks stirred controversy in 2007 with published drawings depicting Mohammad as a dog which sparked threats from Islamist militant groups.He has received numerous death threats and has lived under constant protection by the Swedish police since 2010. HALIFAX - Two people have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder after allegedly plotting to open fire at a popular Halifax shopping mall in a Valentine's Day attack that police say could have resulted in mass casualties.Police said Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath, 23, of Geneva, Ill., and Randall Steven Shepherd, 20, of Halifax, will be in court Tuesday to face the charges after an intense investigation that began with a tip to Crime Stoppers.A third person, a 17-year-old boy from the Halifax area, has been released without being charged due to a lack of evidence, but police said he remains under investigation. They said he was previously known to them, but offered no details.A fourth suspect, a 19-year-old man, was found dead by police early Friday morning in the Halifax suburb of Timberlea.RCMP Asst. Commissioner Brian Brennan said Saturday there is no indication the four suspects have any links to terrorist organizations, and that their motivation remains unclear."This group of individuals we would not define as a terrorist group," he said."Their friendship is not based on culture or ideology. They were four individuals who formed a friendship and decided to plan and commit a heinous crime."Police Chief Jean-Michel Blais said the Halifax Shopping Centre in the west end of the city was the target of the alleged plot.Brennan said three long-barrelled rifles were seized from the home where the deceased man was found, but wouldn't reveal what types of weapons they were.None of the allegations made by police or other officials about the case have been heard or proven in court.The investigation kicked into gear following a single, anonymous call to Crime Stoppers on Thursday morning from a Canadian source. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A gunman opened fire on a Copenhagen cultural center, killing one man and wounding three police officers in what authorities called a terror attack against a free speech event featuring an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad. A second shooting near a synagogue hours later wounded three, and police said it wasn't clear whether the incidents were linked.After searching for the first gunman for hours, police reported the second shooting in downtown Copenhagen after midnight Sunday. One person was shot in the head and two police officers were shot in the arms and legs, police said. The gunman fled on foot.Sebastian Zepeda, a 19-year-old visitor from London, said he didn't want to leave his hotel room after hearing of the first shooting and was text messaging with his mother when the second shooting happened on the street below."I was on my bed and I heard gunshots. And my heart raced," Zepeda said. "All of a sudden the road was packed with police."Witnesses in a bar across the street from the synagogue said they saw special police teams moving in with automatic rifles."We looked out the window and saw this guy lying on the street," said Rasmus Thau Riddersholm, 33. "We were told by police to stay in the back of the room, away from the windows and doors."The earlier shooting came a month after extremists killed 12 people at a satirical newspaper in Paris that had sparked Muslim outrage with its depictions of Muhammad.There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the first shooting, which took place shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday. Danish police said the gunman used an automatic weapon to shoot through the windows of the Krudttoenden cultural center, which TV footage showed were riddled with bullet holes. The gunman then fled in a carjacked Volkswagen Polo that was found later a few kilometers (miles) away, police said.They said the victim was a man about 40 who was inside the cultural center. "What other motive could there be? It's possible it was inspired by Charlie Hebdo," he said, referring to the Jan. 7 attack by Islamic extremists on the French newspaper."At first there was panic. UPDATE: According to Fox News interview with a reporter in Denmark, Lars Vilk was unharmed. There are two suspects at large. They were driving a black Volkswagen, which was recovered.Danish police are treating the shooting at the cafe as a “likely terrorist attack.”Danish special police had been placed outside the café during the event because of Vilks’ presence. COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - One civilian was killed and three police were wounded on Saturday in shooting at a public meeting in the Danish capital Copenhagen attended by the controversial Swedish artist Lars Vilks, police and the Danish Ritzau news agency reported.Danish police confirmed one civilian had been killed in a shooting and said the suspects had fled in a car.Ritzau said both Vilks and the French ambassador, who was also attending, were both unharmed, but that three police had been wounded. The gathering was billed as a debate on art and blasphemy.Just over a month ago, 17 people were killed in France in three days of violence that began when two Islamist gunmen burst into the Paris offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, opening fire in revenge for its publication of satirical images of the Prophet Mohammad.Vilks stirred controversy in 2007 with published drawings depicting Mohammad as a dog which sparked threats from Islamist militant groups.He has received numerous death threats and has lived under constant protection by the Swedish police since 2010. HALIFAX - Two people have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder after allegedly plotting to open fire at a popular Halifax shopping mall in a Valentine's Day attack that police say could have resulted in mass casualties.Police said Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath, 23, of Geneva, Ill., and Randall Steven Shepherd, 20, of Halifax, will be in court Tuesday to face the charges after an intense investigation that began with a tip to Crime Stoppers.A third person, a 17-year-old boy from the Halifax area, has been released without being charged due to a lack of evidence, but police said he remains under investigation. They said he was previously known to them, but offered no details.A fourth suspect, a 19-year-old man, was found dead by police early Friday morning in the Halifax suburb of Timberlea.RCMP Asst. Commissioner Brian Brennan said Saturday there is no indication the four suspects have any links to terrorist organizations, and that their motivation remains unclear."This group of individuals we would not define as a terrorist group," he said."Their friendship is not based on culture or ideology. They were four individuals who formed a friendship and decided to plan and commit a heinous crime."Police Chief Jean-Michel Blais said the Halifax Shopping Centre in the west end of the city was the target of the alleged plot.Brennan said three long-barrelled rifles were seized from the home where the deceased man was found, but wouldn't reveal what types of weapons they were.None of the allegations made by police or other officials about the case have been heard or proven in court.The investigation kicked into gear following a single, anonymous call to Crime Stoppers on Thursday morning from a Canadian source.
