SURABAYA, 13TH FEBRUARY 201 – AirAsia Indonesia wishes to update on the latest development of search and rescue (SAR) operations of QZ 8501 led by the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) Republic of Indonesia.SAR operation in the primary search area around Karimata Strait and Java Sea continued to be hampered by adverse weather conditions. All SAR vessels are currently docked at Kumai Port, Central Borneo for refueling and will be re-deployed once the weather improves.Meanwhile, SAR operations in Makassar Strait is still underway as SAR personnel and rubber boats were deployed to observe the shoreline in the vicinity of West and South Sulawesi. Earlier this afternoon, the SAR team located additional remains suspected to be that of a QZ 8501 passengers on the shoreline of Barru Regency, South Sulawesi. The joint search and rescue (SAR) team on Thursday stopped the search for victims and plane fragments of the crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501 off West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi, as nothing was found on Tuesday and Wednesday.However, according to Makassar National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) head Roki Asikin, the SAR operation was not brought to an end and only personnel were withdrawn from the search location. Basarnas personnel will continue to work, thanks to the presence of a command post in Mamuju, West Sulawesi.“The search mission has been halted and we have pulled out our personnel, but the alert operation is still ongoing. If there are signs of victims or plane fragments, we will immediately move to the location,” said Roki at his office in Makassar on Thursday.As many as 182 personnel have been deployed to scour and look for victims and plane parts in Majene and Mamuju regencies in West Sulawesi, and later extended to Pinrang and Barry regencies in South Sulawesi. Basarnas suspends AirAsia-search operation-The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | National | Fri, February 13 2015, 8:10 PM

National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) head Air Marshal FH Bambang Soelistyo says the AirAsia flight QZ8501 search operation will be suspended for six days due to bad weather.“We will postpone the operation until Imlek [Chinese New Year]. Basarnas has learned of a report that says bad weather will last until Feb. 19,” Bambang said, referring to high wind speeds and strong sea currents.However, Bambang ensured that search and rescue (SAR) work to find the victims of the crash would continue once the weather conditions were conducive.Bad weather had been persistent in the search area since Feb. 9, causing strong winds and high waves in the Karimata Strait, Central Kalimantan, Soelistyo said as quoted by Antara news agency.The AirAsia flight, bound for Singapore from Surabaya, crashed into the Java Sea on Dec. 28, 2014, carrying 162 people on board, including one infant.(+++)
