BEIJING: For families of passengers who were on board the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, the coming Chinese New Year festive season will only heighten their grief as there is still no word on the whereabouts of their loved ones.For 11 months, Dai Shuqin's life has been in limbo. She has lost her appetite and is unable to sleep, still desperate for news on the missing Malaysia Arlines Flight MH370. Three generations of her sister’s family were on that flight."Our families have been missing for missing for 11 months without any reason,” she said. “We’ve lost contact for close to a year and in our search for our families, we’ve had to pay for our own transportation costs and telephone bills. I’ve had a lot of phone calls, and also I've had to hire legal experts and also aviation experts."Dai and many other families of the affected passengers have rejected the recent declaration that the disappearance of MH370 was an accident. She will be flying to Kuala Lumpur along with some 20 other next-of-kin to seek answers from Malaysian Airlines as well as the Malaysian government on the fate of MH370.Most of them have only purchased one-way tickets and will stay on till their 30-day visas expire or until they get the answers they seek."I have no idea what I want to achieve in Malaysia,” said Dai. “We just want to say that we don’t accept the Jan 29 declaration. We still want to search for our families. We believe they are still alive. Be it four years or five years, or 10 or 20 years, as long as I am still alive, I will keep searching for answers."Jiang Hui, whose mother was on board MH370, will also be flying to Kuala Lumpur. Like many of the other families, he has blasted the Malaysian government for declaring the passengers and crew dead without any evidence of the plane’s fate.He has also rejected compensation offers. "Now that Malaysia Airlines made the announcement, I don’t think any of the Chinese families can sit still in their house,” said Jiang. "It’s like being in a prison; we might as well go to Malaysia to seek some answers. It's probably better if there’s no festive mood."Since MH370 vanished, Jiang has removed all pictures of his mother from his house in a bid to lessen his grief, but support has come from the other families involved in the mystery. "We help each other, and support each other when the going gets tough so we’re like a big family now," he said.Upon their arrival in Malaysia, the Chinese families will be meeting up with the Malaysian next-of-kin. Together, they are hoping to speak to the authorities who have declared the disappearance of MH370 as an accident.- CNA/ec
