Domenico Agasso jr Rome At today’s Angelus in St. Peter’s Square Francis asked faithful not to be “fooled by false messiahs” and invited them to think of their “many Christian brothers and sisters who suffer persecution because of their faith. There are more Christians being persecuted today than in the early centuries. After the Marian prayer, Francis reminded those present that today was the “day of road deaths”, praying for respect of the rules of the road. And as the Year of Faith has drawn to a close, Francis recommended faithful a “medicine for the soul” which roused waves of applause.Today’s Gospel passage described how Jesus addressed the people of Jerusalem who were commenting on the temple and how beautiful it was and urged them to pay attention to the “real issues” and not to secondary aspects. The Pope highlighted the pertinence today of the words pronounced by the Son of God “even for us who live in the XXI century.” Francis called for “discernment” and urged faithful to “understand the difference between the spirit of the Lord and the spirit of evil.” “Take heed that you not be deceived. Many will come in my name," Francis said.“Even today, in fact, there are false “saviours", who attempt to substitute leaders of this world, holy men , even sorcerers for Jesus, people who want to attract hearts and minds, especially of young people, to themselves. Jesus warns us: "Do not follow them". And the Lord also helps us to not be afraid when faced with wars, revolutions, but also to natural disasters, epidemics, Jesus frees us from fatalism and false apocalyptic visions.”Then Francis spoke about the challenge for us as Christians and the Church: “Jesus speaks of the painful trials and persecutions that his disciples will have to suffer because of Him. an EU-US trade deal concluded on Friday (15 November) with negotiators
playing down suggestions that an accord would undercut a raft of rules
on consumer protection and environmental standards.Despite fresh revelations about the extent of phone-hacking and
surveillance by the US National Security Agency, data protection was not
on the agenda of the second round of talks, which was delayed by the US
government "shutdown" in October.The meeting instead focused on energy and raw materials, together
with more general discussions on regulatory and technical standards.Earlier, a number of consumer groups and NGOs had voiced fears that
an agreement could water down EU standards on environmental protection
and food safety, including genetically modified products.Magda Stoczkiewicz, director of Friends of the Earth Europe, said
that she was “more concerned than ever that big businesses see the deal
as a chance to get rid of laws that have been put in place to protect
citizens and the environment."
She added: “It is unbelievable that the EU and US are discussing plans to allow companies to sue governments if they see their profits affected by a democratically agreed decision. Storms sweep across Midwest, kill 6 in Illinois

Uninjured, the pair looked out moments later to find the house gone and the sun out "right on top" of them, Zehr said. Their home, on the outskirts of Washington, Ill., was swept up and scattered over hundreds of yards by one of the dozens of tornadoes and intense thunderstorms that swept across the Midwest on Sunday, leaving at least six people dead and unleashing powerful winds that flattened entire neighborhoods, flipped over cars and uprooted trees."They saw (the tornado) right there and got in the basement," said a stunned Zehr, pointing to the farm field near the rubble that had been his home.Early Monday, Washington Mayor Gary Manier estimated that from 250 to 500 homes were either damaged or destroyed in the storm and that it wasn't clear when residents would be allowed to return."Everybody's without power, but some people are without everything," Manier told reporters in the parking lot of a destroyed auto parts store and near a row of flattened homes."How people survived is beyond me," he said.The unusually powerful late-season wave of thunderstorms brought damaging winds and tornadoes to 12 states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and western New York.Bill Bunting, forecast operations chief of the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said the storms all belonged to the same system and would be "moving rapidly to the east and continue east overnight and into the morning."Illinois was the hardest struck with at least six people killed and dozens more injured.An 80-year-old man and his 78-year-old sister were killed by a tornado that hit their farmhouse near the rural southern Illinois community of New Minden, coroner Mark Styninger said. Just how many tornadoes hit was unclear.
