Pump and Dump Fraud-fraudtv
Every year pump and dump scams cause losses estimated at $6 billion.Pump and dump scams can significantly impact investor confidence.
Scenario: You receive an email touting stock in a small mining company. "A real winner" it says. "Expected to go through the roof". Your online stock newsletter also is writing about it. The stock is seeing much activity on the market and the price is rising. You buy on the strength that these people must know what they are doing - right!!!
Scam: At first the price continues to rise. Then suddenly it drops out of sight. No one wants to buy the stock and the promoters are no where to be seen. Your investment is worth nothing.
The rule in the stock market is "to make money you need to buy low and sell high". The trouble is that timing the "buy and sell" accurately is almost impossible. Imagine if you could control the price movements and always buy and sell at the right time. This is exactly what an unscrupulous promoter attempts to do. He may actually own stock in the company himself or he may be working for someone who does, perhaps even the owners of the company. He begins by hyping the stock through bogus emails and self-serving newsletters so that people want to buy. The increase in demand raises the price. This is called the "Pump".
Once the stock price rises to a specific level, or the promoter feels the scam is losing steam, the fraudsters start selling. This causes the price to drop and may even result in the stock being worthless. This is called the "Dump". The promoter and his cronies have made their money and are off to another opportunity, leaving the victim with nothing.
As with most frauds, the con artist takes advantage of people's greed. People want to "get in on the deal". Historically these frauds may see a 50-cent stock go up perhaps 10-fold to $5 before the dump happens. Often the victims are unsophisticated investors out to make a quick buck. However, every now and again there is a big fraud that includes in its victims savvy investors such as banks, insurance companies and major investment firms. The Bre-X mining scandal in 1992 was just that. The stock started at 45 cents CDN and through lies and deceit rose to $286 CDN and was present in the accounts of many major investment firms. Once the fraud had been discovered, the stock price landed at .03 cents and people lost millions. It was an elaborate pump and dump scheme that went far beyond anything anyone could have dreamed.
