NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has arrived in Washington D.C. to begin a week-long visit to the United States. Today (26 May 2015), Mr. Stoltenberg will meet US President Barack Obama for talks on the Alliance’s adaptation in the face of new security challenges. Tomorrow, the Secretary General will meet with Secretary of State John Kerry; National Security Advisor Ambassador Susan Rice; Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, and other senior officials.On Wednesday, Mr. Stoltenberg will deliver a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington D.C., and meet with key international security experts and opinion leaders.The Secretary General will travel to Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday to visit the 125th Fighter Wing, Florida Air National Guard. The same day, he will also visit the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia.Mr. Stoltenberg will finish his trip to the United States on Friday with a visit to Naval Station Mayport in Florida, where he will tour the destroyer USS Carney.

During the two-day Military Committee meeting, the 28 Allied Chiefs of Defence exchanged views on the current and future security challenges facing the Alliance, and provided clear and decisive military advice to North Atlantic Council ahead of the NATO Defence Ministers meeting next month.The 173rd Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session took place at an important time for the Alliance, amidst the “new and constantly evolving security environment which I believe has become the new norm” General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee emphasised during his press conference.The NATO Chiefs of Defence discussed the challenges emanating from both the Eastern and Southern flanks and the need for NATO to continue to adapt and ensure all Allies were secure against any threat. “We have improved our situational awareness and intelligence, we are speeding up our decision making, exploring new ways of working with our international partners and we are implementing the biggest reinforcement of our collective defence since the end of the Cold War with the Readiness Action Plan (RAP). And we are also increasing the readiness and availability of the whole of our Armed Forces, spearheaded by the VJTF which will become fully operational in 2016”, added General Bartels.The NATO Chiefs of Defence used the opportunity of the meeting with Ukraine to reiterate their full support for the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as there was continued concern with the increase in ceasefire violations by Russian backed separatists, the use of heavy weapons and the continued Russian support for separatists. The meeting with NATO’s partner nations allowed the 28 Defence Chiefs to highlight the importance of strengthening NATO’s partnerships by working and exercising together in order to increase the interoperability. “Partnerships are, and will continue to be, essential to the way NATO works. Partners have served with us in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and other operations, sacrificing alongside Alliance troops, and work with us in combating terrorism and piracy”, noted the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.Finally, the Defence Chiefs reaffirmed their solid commitment to the current NATO missions, commending the KFOR mission on its progress and discussing the challenges that still lay ahead in Afghanistan, the ongoing Resolute Support Mission to train, advise and assistant the Afghan security forces and institutions,. “NATO is the strongest military alliance in the world and its missions and operations have, and continue to, contribute to global peace and stability”, concluded General Bartels.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation-I just met with Foreign Minister Lavrov and we discussed different issues, among them of course the situation in Ukraine and I re-stated the very strong NATO position on the illegal annexation of Crimea, but also on the very serious situation we see in eastern Ukraine. I underlined the importance of full implementation of the Minsk Agreements meaning respect for the ceasefire, full implementation of the ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons and of course full access for the OSCE monitors so they can monitor the implementation of the ceasefire.I also called on Russia to withdraw all its troops and support for the separatists. We also discussed the importance of transparency and predictability especially in a situation where we have increased military presence along our borders. And for NATO it is important to do whatever we can to avoid that the incidents and the situation is spiralling out of control. And therefore we are very focussed on transparency related to all our exercises and we are fully transparent when it comes to when and where we are going to conduct exercises.I also very much underline that we should strive for even more transparency and predictability and we are concerned about the large numbers of snap exercises conducted by Russia because this decreases transparency and predictability. Therefore the snap exercises, the numbers but also the size of the snap exercises, reduce predictability and transparency along our borders and I think we should try to change that by also the Russians being more transparent when it comes to their military activities.We also addressed the question of lines of communications – military lines of communications. I stated that these lines of military communication between NATO and Russia – we keep them open and we check them. It is important to have these lines of communication and also they can contribute to more predictability and avoiding any misunderstandings.So these were the main issues we discussed and NATO’s position remains unchanged. We have suspended all practical cooperation with Russia as a response to their behaviour in Crimea and Ukraine. But we are keeping the lines of political contact open and we will continue to do so. I met Foreign Minister Lavrov in Munich and now I met him here and there are regular contacts on both the diplomatic and political level between NATO and Russia. CAMP DOIRON, Romania — Would Canadians have reckoned 16 months ago infantrymen from a base in the Ottawa Valley would be climbing a hill on the edge of the Transylvanian Alps to attack a Romanian position in war games aimed at deterring Russian aggression? But there they were, a platoon from the Royal Canadian Regiment in Petawawa, Ont., dressed in war paint and combat camouflage exchanging fire with a Romanian heavy machine gun mounted on a Soviet-era armoured personnel carrier as U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters patrolled nearby.The Canadian army has maintained a modest, but persistent presence in eastern Europe since soon after Russian forces invaded Crimea last March, then sent spies, soldiers, weapons and tanks to to help feeble separatists forces seize parts of eastern Ukraine.The Royals have had slightly more than 200 soldiers in eastern Europe since last July, and have conducted joint exercises in Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. This month they decamped from Glebokie, Poland, to western Romania, a 1,721-kilometre trek that took three days. There, they established a tent camp named after Sgt. Andrew Doiron, who was killed in a friendly fire incident in Iraq in March.

Russia's military defence has taken to the skies for a massive - and unexpected - air force exercise.In a sign of ongoing tensions over Ukraine, 250 aircraft and 12,000 service personnel are involved in the drill, according to its defence ministry.The ministry described the four-day practice - ordered by President Vladimir Putin - as a "massive surprise inspection" to check combat readiness.It comes as one of Putin's closest aides, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, issued a chilling warning to the West.He said: "It is our territory, it is our shelf, and we'll provide its security. And we will make money there."I have always joked about it, that they will not give us visas."They will put us on a sanctions list - but tanks do not need visas." It will involve 115 fighter planes and 3,600 troops from nine countries.The Arctic Challenge Exercise will also involve troops and planes from the US, Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands - all Nato members - as well as neutral Switzerland.The exercise is the second of its kind, following similar tests in 2013.The defence ministers of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark, along with Iceland's foreign minister, signed a joint declaration in April in which they called Russia's military aggression "the biggest challenge to European security".

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has arrived in Washington D.C. to begin a week-long visit to the United States. Today (26 May 2015), Mr. Stoltenberg will meet US President Barack Obama for talks on the Alliance’s adaptation in the face of new security challenges. Tomorrow, the Secretary General will meet with Secretary of State John Kerry; National Security Advisor Ambassador Susan Rice; Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, and other senior officials.On Wednesday, Mr. Stoltenberg will deliver a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington D.C., and meet with key international security experts and opinion leaders.The Secretary General will travel to Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday to visit the 125th Fighter Wing, Florida Air National Guard. The same day, he will also visit the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia.Mr. Stoltenberg will finish his trip to the United States on Friday with a visit to Naval Station Mayport in Florida, where he will tour the destroyer USS Carney.

During the two-day Military Committee meeting, the 28 Allied Chiefs of Defence exchanged views on the current and future security challenges facing the Alliance, and provided clear and decisive military advice to North Atlantic Council ahead of the NATO Defence Ministers meeting next month.The 173rd Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session took place at an important time for the Alliance, amidst the “new and constantly evolving security environment which I believe has become the new norm” General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee emphasised during his press conference.The NATO Chiefs of Defence discussed the challenges emanating from both the Eastern and Southern flanks and the need for NATO to continue to adapt and ensure all Allies were secure against any threat. “We have improved our situational awareness and intelligence, we are speeding up our decision making, exploring new ways of working with our international partners and we are implementing the biggest reinforcement of our collective defence since the end of the Cold War with the Readiness Action Plan (RAP). And we are also increasing the readiness and availability of the whole of our Armed Forces, spearheaded by the VJTF which will become fully operational in 2016”, added General Bartels.The NATO Chiefs of Defence used the opportunity of the meeting with Ukraine to reiterate their full support for the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as there was continued concern with the increase in ceasefire violations by Russian backed separatists, the use of heavy weapons and the continued Russian support for separatists. The meeting with NATO’s partner nations allowed the 28 Defence Chiefs to highlight the importance of strengthening NATO’s partnerships by working and exercising together in order to increase the interoperability. “Partnerships are, and will continue to be, essential to the way NATO works. Partners have served with us in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and other operations, sacrificing alongside Alliance troops, and work with us in combating terrorism and piracy”, noted the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.Finally, the Defence Chiefs reaffirmed their solid commitment to the current NATO missions, commending the KFOR mission on its progress and discussing the challenges that still lay ahead in Afghanistan, the ongoing Resolute Support Mission to train, advise and assistant the Afghan security forces and institutions,. “NATO is the strongest military alliance in the world and its missions and operations have, and continue to, contribute to global peace and stability”, concluded General Bartels.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation-I just met with Foreign Minister Lavrov and we discussed different issues, among them of course the situation in Ukraine and I re-stated the very strong NATO position on the illegal annexation of Crimea, but also on the very serious situation we see in eastern Ukraine. I underlined the importance of full implementation of the Minsk Agreements meaning respect for the ceasefire, full implementation of the ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons and of course full access for the OSCE monitors so they can monitor the implementation of the ceasefire.I also called on Russia to withdraw all its troops and support for the separatists. We also discussed the importance of transparency and predictability especially in a situation where we have increased military presence along our borders. And for NATO it is important to do whatever we can to avoid that the incidents and the situation is spiralling out of control. And therefore we are very focussed on transparency related to all our exercises and we are fully transparent when it comes to when and where we are going to conduct exercises.I also very much underline that we should strive for even more transparency and predictability and we are concerned about the large numbers of snap exercises conducted by Russia because this decreases transparency and predictability. Therefore the snap exercises, the numbers but also the size of the snap exercises, reduce predictability and transparency along our borders and I think we should try to change that by also the Russians being more transparent when it comes to their military activities.We also addressed the question of lines of communications – military lines of communications. I stated that these lines of military communication between NATO and Russia – we keep them open and we check them. It is important to have these lines of communication and also they can contribute to more predictability and avoiding any misunderstandings.So these were the main issues we discussed and NATO’s position remains unchanged. We have suspended all practical cooperation with Russia as a response to their behaviour in Crimea and Ukraine. But we are keeping the lines of political contact open and we will continue to do so. I met Foreign Minister Lavrov in Munich and now I met him here and there are regular contacts on both the diplomatic and political level between NATO and Russia.
