A science satellite dubbed the "Ferrari of space" for its sleek, finned looks will shortly run out of fuel and fall to Earth after a successful mission, the European Space Agency (ESA) says.Launched in 2009, the satellite -- a hi-tech craft designed to monitor gravity and ocean circulation -- is likely to break up in mid-October, its mission manager told AFP on Wednesday. The Gravity Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) orbits at an extremely low altitude of just 260 kilometres (160 miles), where there are lingering molecules of atmosphere.
To reduce drag, it has an arrow-like octagonal shape and two fins to provide extra aerodynamic stability, a departure from the box-like form of satellites that operate in the complete vacuum of space. It stays aloft thanks to an ion engine that began with a stock of 41 kilos (90.2 pounds) of fuel and is now down to about two kilos (4.4 pounds), Rune Floberghagen said from an ESA symposium in Edinburgh, Scotland."We are facing the situation where the electrical propulsion system which keeps the spacecraft flying at this extremely low altitude will stop working somewhere between the end of September and the beginning of November -- the best engineering prediction is in the middle, somewhere in the 16th or 17th October," he said. Most of the 5.3-metre (17.2-foot) spacecraft will break up and burn when it tumbles to an altitude of 75 to 80 kilometres, he said.According to re-entry analysis, about 250 kilos of its one-tonne mass will survive, hitting the surface in a trail of "between 40 and 50 fragments" extending over 900 kilometres, he said.It was impossible right now to say where the trail would be, as the re-entry is uncontrolled, Floberghagen said.
He explained that it was only in 2008, after GOCE was designed and built, that an international agreement required research satellites to have propulsion enabling a targeted re-entry that leads to a breakup over the ocean, thus reducing the risk of impacting inhabited areas."It is much less than other (uncontrolled) re-entries, it is a very small aircraft in fact. We should put this into perspective and not over-dramatise what is happening here," he said, adding that ESA was advising national authorities on the upcoming event.
Floberghagen said the fuel was supposed to last 20 months. But the mission has been hugely helped by extremely low solar activity, which also reduces the density of air molecules at this height. As a result, the 350-million-euro ($465-million) mission, after teething problems, has lasted twice has long as scheduled.
"Everyone is extremely happy with this mission, both in our ability to monitor Earth's gravity field, and also the spinoff achievements, our ability to understand and use the payload onboard," said Floberghagen.
"The science achievements have been rather remarkable and we have demonstrated a lot of new technologies," he said.

STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear,(TORNADOES,HURRICANES,STORMS) and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth:(DESTRUCTION) for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.(FROM QUAKES,NUKES ETC)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

1 dead as flash flooding hits parts of Colo.

DENVER (AP) — Flash flooding in Colorado's Boulder County has left one person dead and the widespread high waters are keeping search and rescue teams from reaching stranded residents and motorists in Boulder and nearby mountain communities, as heavy rains hammered northern Colorado on Thursday.
Boulder Office of Emergency Management spokeswoman Gabrielle Boerkircher said volunteers are trying to help stranded people until emergency crews can arrive because many roads are impassable.Boerkircher told The Associated Press that one person was killed when a structure collapsed in Jamestown. She said no details were available on the collapsed building."We're trying to get to Jamestown. A lot of towns need assistance, and we cannot get through," she said. Many roads were closed because of flooding and debris. Coal Creek Canyon northwest of Denver was closed because of a washed-out highway. The Larimer County office of emergency information said an earthen dam in the Big Elk Meadows area southeast of Estes Park gave way and residents of Pinewood Springs and Blue Mountain were ordered to be ready to evacuate.
Residents of the Big Elk Meadows area were told by a recorded message they "should be seeking higher ground immediately."Capt. John Burt of the Colorado State Patrol said damage was being reported in four counties, including Boulder, Larimer and Jefferson northwest of Denver and El Paso County around Colorado Springs.Burt said a heavy storm cell moved through during the night, dumping heavy amounts of rain, spread east causing flooding on the Eastern Plains, then turned around and headed back."It's a different weather cell than we have seen in the past," he said.Rainfall in recent days that dramatically increased on Wednesday caused the flash flooding that also triggered mudslides and prompted evacuations. The Weather Service said early Thursday that more than four inches of rain had fallen in some areas since noon Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for the county and northwest Jefferson County, while a mandatory evacuation order was in effect for the tiny community of Jamestown and the Fourmile area."The rains have been sitting over that area," Boerkircher said. The Weather Service said that county officials reported some homes had collapsed in Jamestown, where dozens of people live, according to a report by The Denver Post. The office said there have been no other reports of any deaths or injuries. An evacuation center for the mountain residents has been sent up in nearby Nederland, officials said.
Meanwhile, about 400 students at the University of Colorado housing in Boulder were evacuated and classes canceled Thursday because of the flooding, Boekircher said."We've asked people in low-lying areas all through the county to evacuate," said Andrew Barth, another Emergency Management spokesman.
In addition to the two counties where there were flood emergencies, the Weather Service posted flash flood warnings for parts of Broomfield, Adams, Weld, Larimer, and El Paso counties.Mudslides and rockslides were reported in several areas, with parts of U.S. 6, Boulder Canyon, Colorado 14 and U.S. 287 all reporting problems and temporary blockages during the evening, the Denver Post said. Lefthand Canyon was reported blocked by one of the many slides.Boulder police dispatchers were receiving calls of flooding basements and homes and of flooded streets and submerged cars. Authorities said the flooding has made many Boulder streets impassable.Emergency Management Director Mike Chard.said people should avoid creeks and waterways, and not attempt to cross flooded intersections in their cars."We're also asking people who are OK to shelter in place Thursday, just because the roads are so bad," Barth said.As the flooding began Wednesday evening, the city of Erie was the hardest hit in the county with up to a foot of water across Erie Parkway, according to a report by KCNC.As the rains continued, conditions deteriorated early Thursday across the region.

Severe thunderstorms, possible tornadoes, roll through Ontario, Quebec

By | Geekquinox – 9 hours ago-yahoonews-SEPT 12,13

Severe storms with intense lightning swept across southern Ontario on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The hot and sticky weather from the past two days has come to an end now, but in its wake, thunderstorms have been tracking across the southern half of the province since this afternoon, spawning some severe weather and possibly even a few funnel clouds and tornadoes. The stormy weather started at around 4 p.m., as an approaching cold front stirred up the hot, humid air into a line of powerful storms that stretched from the shores of Lake Huron all the way to southwestern Quebec. This line of storms brought torrential rainfall, frequent lightning and thunder, strong winds and dime to quarter-sized hail to many regions, and some areas apparently even experienced funnel clouds and possible tornado touchdowns.

Some of the the strongest storms were seen in southwestern Ontario. One storm cell in particular spawned tornado warnings from Strathroy, though London and continuing on through Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, Woodstock and east towards Brantford. Forecasters had noted rotation on radar images of the cell, and there were some reports of tornado touchdowns, with one possibly at the junction of Highway 401 and Highbury Ave in London, and according to one rather shaken caller, another in Ingersoll to the east.
Numerous reports and pictures showed up on Twitter of hail stones, down trees and branches, and storm damage to vehicles and property.Reports also came in from eastern Ontario this afternoon of funnel clouds near Havelock and Cornwall. There were no reports of tornado touchdowns or any damages. The storms continued into the evening, with more heavy rain, dime-sized hail, and intense lightning. Ontario Hydro is reporting blackouts near Windsor, Strathroy, London and Hamilton, and according to Toronto Hydro, customers in Rexdale, York, North York, downtown Toronto, and several parts of Scarborough are also without power. Apparently the lightning even set fire to one home on Agricola Road in Brampton. This intense weather is expected to persist throughout the day on Thursday, with showers in the morning and more thunderstorms expected in the afternoon. Temperatures will be significantly cooler, though, with afternoon highs reaching into the low 20s across the province.(Photo courtesy: Aaron Vincent Elkaim/Canadian Press) Geek out with the latest in science and weather.Follow @ygeekquinox on Twitter!
