"And I take this opportunity to reiterate Israel's commitment to peace, and my commitment to peace."
"Over the last few weeks, we’ve taken some concrete tangible steps to benefit the Palestinian population," he continued. "We’ve taken economic steps, added measures for reconstruction and development and ensuring ongoing humanitarian support. We’ll continue with those practical steps, but at the same time we will continue to work towards peace.""Israel wants peace," he emphasized. "I want peace. We want a peace that would end the conflict once and for all. My position has not changed."Netanyahu then stated that he supports a two-state solution, i.e. the creation of a Palestinian state."I don’t support a one state solution – I don't believe that’s a solution at all," he said. "I support the vision of two states for two peoples – a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish state, and I look forward to discussing with you how we can advance that vision forth in a practical, secure and responsible way. He then shifted focus to Iran.
"But if I look around at our region and the world, the most dangerous enemy of peace is Iran," Netanyahu stated. "Iran is arming and training Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, and Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Iran is opening a third terror front against Israel in the Golan and it is pursuing its nuclear program, which I believe poses the greatest threat to the region and to the world.""I’m afraid the Lausanne program will not block Iran's path to the bomb," he continued. "Iran's emerging deal with the world powers facilitates and legitimizes Iran's continued development of the capabilities of forming nuclear weapons.""And by prematurely easing sanctions, the deal will give Iran many billions of dollars with which to fund its aggression and its worldwide terror campaign.""Because of Lausanne, the sanctions are already eroding," he added. "In recent weeks, Airbus aircraft have been sold to Iran in direct violation of the sanctions.""If pressure is being lifted today, what leverage will remain to ensure that Iran complies tomorrow when there is no pressure when the sanctions are removed?," he said. "And the answer, the honest answer is: nothing. Nothing will be left to ensure that Iran complies with the deal or that Iran ceases its aggression and its terror.""If we want to know what will happen with Iran as a result of this deal, just look at what happened with North Korea as a result of that deal," he noted. The city was united, and will never be divided again,” Netanyahu said at the Jerusalem Day celebration at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva on Sunday.He made similar comments on Monday during a special Knesset session in honor of Jerusalem Day, saying Jerusalem will remain united regardless of any future negotiations with the PA."Jerusalem will not be divided again, it will not return to becoming a battlefield and a city of storybooks," Netanyahu said, adding, "We are building all over the city, including in the Arab neighborhoods. We do not build in Jerusalem to confront the international community, we do it responsibly and judiciously and that is our natural right."Later Monday, both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Hamas terrorist movement slammed Netanyahu over his remarks, according to the IANS news agency.Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas, said in a press statement that Netanyahu's remarks contradict UN resolutions and violate international conventions."There will be no peace or settlement in the Middle East without having east Jerusalem as the capital of Palestinian state," Abu Rudeineh declared, according to IANS.He also slammed earlier remarks made by an Israeli minister in Netanyahu's cabinet, who stated that the Jews would soon pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem."Such remarks will lead to a big fire that will be very hard to control either by the Arabs or the Muslims all over the world," warned Abu Rudeineh.Meanwhile, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in an emailed press statement that Netanyahu's remarks that Jerusalem would not be divided "shows the failure of the so-called peace process"."Talking about the resumption of the so-called peace talks with the Israeli occupation while these remarks are mad is like thirsty people looking for water in the desert," Abu Zuhri said, according to IANS.Recently, Israel approved construction of 900 homes in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, a haredi neighborhood in the eastern part of the capital.The European Union later criticized the Israeli plans, saying “Israel's determination to continue its settlement policy despite the urging of the international community not only threatens the viability of the two state solution but also seriously calls into question its commitment to a negotiated agreement with the Palestinians.”The State Department in Washington also condemned the move, calling it "disappointing" and "damaging".

Jerusalem (AFP) - Two Israeli policewomen were injured in annexed east Jerusalem on Wednesday when they were hit by a car driven by a Palestinian who was then shot dead, police said.It was the latest in a string of lone-wolf attacks by Palestinians using cars to ram pedestrians or police, a trend which began in Jerusalem in October but has also spread to the West Bank.The incident took place in A-Tur on the Mount of Olives, with police spokeswoman Luba Samri saying the driver veered off the road and struck two border police officers, both of them female.They had earlier been identified as male officers."Another border policeman opened fire at the terrorist and neutralised him," Samri said, confirming that the driver had died.The two policewomen were moderately injured and taken to different hospitals in the city, she said.The driver was identified by relatives as 41-year-old Imran Abu Dheim from the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Jabal Mukaber."We're absolutely stunned by what's happened," a cousin of the driver told AFP, describing him as a very quiet man with five adult children."It was an accident and when he tried to reverse, they killed him," he said, citing eyewitnesses.Israel seized the eastern Arab sector of the city during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community.The Palestinians want east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday canceled a plan that would have banned Palestinian laborers from riding on the same buses with Jewish settlers in the West Bank, just hours after it was announced — an embarrassing about-face that reflected the tensions enveloping Israel's new government.The inauspicious start for Netanyahu's hard-line government illustrated the difficulties that loom as it tries to advance a pro-settler agenda in the face of rising global outrage and domestic criticism.
The reversal came as the European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, was in town. The EU has taken a tough stance against settlements built on lands claimed by the Palestinians.As the bus plan was unveiled, Israeli critics across the political spectrum derided it as racist, with one opposition politician comparing it to "apartheid." Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, a member of Netanyahu's Likud Party, called the plan "unthinkable" and said there had been "great damage" to Israel.Netanyahu's new coalition, which was sworn into office last week, is dominated by settler sympathizers, and the busing plan, launched late Tuesday on a trial basis, had sought to separate settlers and Palestinians from traveling together through the West Bank.The plan's mastermind, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, said it was connected solely to security. "And I take this opportunity to reiterate Israel's commitment to peace, and my commitment to peace."
"Over the last few weeks, we’ve taken some concrete tangible steps to benefit the Palestinian population," he continued. "We’ve taken economic steps, added measures for reconstruction and development and ensuring ongoing humanitarian support. We’ll continue with those practical steps, but at the same time we will continue to work towards peace.""Israel wants peace," he emphasized. "I want peace. We want a peace that would end the conflict once and for all. My position has not changed."Netanyahu then stated that he supports a two-state solution, i.e. the creation of a Palestinian state."I don’t support a one state solution – I don't believe that’s a solution at all," he said. "I support the vision of two states for two peoples – a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish state, and I look forward to discussing with you how we can advance that vision forth in a practical, secure and responsible way. He then shifted focus to Iran.
"But if I look around at our region and the world, the most dangerous enemy of peace is Iran," Netanyahu stated. "Iran is arming and training Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, and Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Iran is opening a third terror front against Israel in the Golan and it is pursuing its nuclear program, which I believe poses the greatest threat to the region and to the world.""I’m afraid the Lausanne program will not block Iran's path to the bomb," he continued. "Iran's emerging deal with the world powers facilitates and legitimizes Iran's continued development of the capabilities of forming nuclear weapons.""And by prematurely easing sanctions, the deal will give Iran many billions of dollars with which to fund its aggression and its worldwide terror campaign.""Because of Lausanne, the sanctions are already eroding," he added. "In recent weeks, Airbus aircraft have been sold to Iran in direct violation of the sanctions.""If pressure is being lifted today, what leverage will remain to ensure that Iran complies tomorrow when there is no pressure when the sanctions are removed?," he said. "And the answer, the honest answer is: nothing. Nothing will be left to ensure that Iran complies with the deal or that Iran ceases its aggression and its terror.""If we want to know what will happen with Iran as a result of this deal, just look at what happened with North Korea as a result of that deal," he noted. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s pledge during Jerusalem Day that the capital will never be divided again was not well accepted by Palestinian Arabs.“I pledge that as Prime Minister I will continue to develop the city. The city was united, and will never be divided again,” Netanyahu said at the Jerusalem Day celebration at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva on Sunday.He made similar comments on Monday during a special Knesset session in honor of Jerusalem Day, saying Jerusalem will remain united regardless of any future negotiations with the PA."Jerusalem will not be divided again, it will not return to becoming a battlefield and a city of storybooks," Netanyahu said, adding, "We are building all over the city, including in the Arab neighborhoods. We do not build in Jerusalem to confront the international community, we do it responsibly and judiciously and that is our natural right."Later Monday, both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Hamas terrorist movement slammed Netanyahu over his remarks, according to the IANS news agency.Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas, said in a press statement that Netanyahu's remarks contradict UN resolutions and violate international conventions."There will be no peace or settlement in the Middle East without having east Jerusalem as the capital of Palestinian state," Abu Rudeineh declared, according to IANS.He also slammed earlier remarks made by an Israeli minister in Netanyahu's cabinet, who stated that the Jews would soon pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem."Such remarks will lead to a big fire that will be very hard to control either by the Arabs or the Muslims all over the world," warned Abu Rudeineh.Meanwhile, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in an emailed press statement that Netanyahu's remarks that Jerusalem would not be divided "shows the failure of the so-called peace process"."Talking about the resumption of the so-called peace talks with the Israeli occupation while these remarks are mad is like thirsty people looking for water in the desert," Abu Zuhri said, according to IANS.Recently, Israel approved construction of 900 homes in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, a haredi neighborhood in the eastern part of the capital.The European Union later criticized the Israeli plans, saying “Israel's determination to continue its settlement policy despite the urging of the international community not only threatens the viability of the two state solution but also seriously calls into question its commitment to a negotiated agreement with the Palestinians.”The State Department in Washington also condemned the move, calling it "disappointing" and "damaging".

Jerusalem (AFP) - Two Israeli policewomen were injured in annexed east Jerusalem on Wednesday when they were hit by a car driven by a Palestinian who was then shot dead, police said.It was the latest in a string of lone-wolf attacks by Palestinians using cars to ram pedestrians or police, a trend which began in Jerusalem in October but has also spread to the West Bank.The incident took place in A-Tur on the Mount of Olives, with police spokeswoman Luba Samri saying the driver veered off the road and struck two border police officers, both of them female.They had earlier been identified as male officers."Another border policeman opened fire at the terrorist and neutralised him," Samri said, confirming that the driver had died.The two policewomen were moderately injured and taken to different hospitals in the city, she said.The driver was identified by relatives as 41-year-old Imran Abu Dheim from the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Jabal Mukaber."We're absolutely stunned by what's happened," a cousin of the driver told AFP, describing him as a very quiet man with five adult children."It was an accident and when he tried to reverse, they killed him," he said, citing eyewitnesses.Israel seized the eastern Arab sector of the city during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community.The Palestinians want east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday canceled a plan that would have banned Palestinian laborers from riding on the same buses with Jewish settlers in the West Bank, just hours after it was announced — an embarrassing about-face that reflected the tensions enveloping Israel's new government.The inauspicious start for Netanyahu's hard-line government illustrated the difficulties that loom as it tries to advance a pro-settler agenda in the face of rising global outrage and domestic criticism.
The reversal came as the European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, was in town. The EU has taken a tough stance against settlements built on lands claimed by the Palestinians.As the bus plan was unveiled, Israeli critics across the political spectrum derided it as racist, with one opposition politician comparing it to "apartheid."
