Nepal quakes deadliest ever to hit country, kill over 8,500-The number of people killed in earthquakes in Nepal on April 25 and May 12 exceeded 8,500, making it the deadliest disaster on record in the Himalayan state.According to RT, the previous deadliest earthquake in the country was in 1934, which took at least 8,519 lives.The death toll from the recent quakes now stands at 8,583, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing Nepal's Home Ministry. SALGAR, Colombia (AP) — Rescuers searched for more bodies Tuesday as the death toll from a deadly flood and mudslide that swept through a Colombian town rose to 62.The avalanche of mud and debris roared through the mountain town of Salgar before dawn Monday, taking away homes and bridges. Authorities said the death toll, which had risen to 62, was likely to grow throughout the day as an undetermined number of people, perhaps as many as 100, remain missing.Survivors recalled being stirred from their beds by a loud rumble and neighbors' shouts, barely having enough time to gather their loved ones as modestly built homes and bridges plunged into the Libordiana ravine."The river took out everything in its path," said construction worker Diego Agudelo, adding that the back part of his home was lost to the river.Dozens of rescuers supported by Black Hawk helicopters on Monday evacuated residents near the ravine for fear of another mudslide. A red fire truck could be seen hauling away several bodies, their bare feet dangling from an open trunk.President Juan Manuel Santos, who traveled to the town to oversee relief efforts, said several children lost their parents and the bodies of those killed needed to be transported to Medellin for identification. Nepal quakes deadliest ever to hit country, kill over 8,500-The number of people killed in earthquakes in Nepal on April 25 and May 12 exceeded 8,500, making it the deadliest disaster on record in the Himalayan state.According to RT, the previous deadliest earthquake in the country was in 1934, which took at least 8,519 lives.The death toll from the recent quakes now stands at 8,583, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing Nepal's Home Ministry. Dozens of people are still missing, as many of the badly affected areas are remote rural regions, cut off from emergency workers.Fifty-eight foreigners died in the two earthquakes, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala told reporters on Sunday, adding that over a hundred are still unaccounted for.MG

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The El Niño climate phenomenon is almost certain to last through the Northern Hemisphere summer, the U.S. weather forecaster said, raising the chance of heavy rain in the southern United States as well as South America, and scorching heat in Asia that could devastate crops of thirsty food staples like rice.El Niño also reduces the likelihood of a busy hurricane season, which lasts from June to November and can disrupt energy operations in the Gulf of Mexico.In its monthly report released on Thursday, the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said El Niño, a phenomenon which warms sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific, had a 90 percent likelihood of continuing through the summer. In April it estimated the odds at 70 percent.El Niño conditions will likely last through the end of the year, the CPC said, pegging the chance at 80 percent."[El Niño]'s definitely upon us and it should remain so for the next few months," said Don Keeney, a meteorologist with Maryland-based MDA Weather Services. A strong El Nino last appeared in 2009-2010 and resulted in significant spikes in sugar, cocoa and wheat prices.If a strong El Niño does develop the likely U.S. impacts include wetter conditions across the southern U.S., from drought-stricken California through Texas to Florida, said Jeff Masters, a meteorologist for Weather Underground.Recent rains across the central and southern Plains and reaching as far as southern California "could be seen as a sneak preview," he wrote on his blog.But the El Niño effect did not guarantee drought relief for the Golden State, he said. SALGAR, Colombia (AP) — Rescuers searched for more bodies Tuesday as the death toll from a deadly flood and mudslide that swept through a Colombian town rose to 62.The avalanche of mud and debris roared through the mountain town of Salgar before dawn Monday, taking away homes and bridges. Authorities said the death toll, which had risen to 62, was likely to grow throughout the day as an undetermined number of people, perhaps as many as 100, remain missing.Survivors recalled being stirred from their beds by a loud rumble and neighbors' shouts, barely having enough time to gather their loved ones as modestly built homes and bridges plunged into the Libordiana ravine."The river took out everything in its path," said construction worker Diego Agudelo, adding that the back part of his home was lost to the river.Dozens of rescuers supported by Black Hawk helicopters on Monday evacuated residents near the ravine for fear of another mudslide. A red fire truck could be seen hauling away several bodies, their bare feet dangling from an open trunk.President Juan Manuel Santos, who traveled to the town to oversee relief efforts, said several children lost their parents and the bodies of those killed needed to be transported to Medellin for identification. He vowed to rebuild the lost homes and provide shelter and assistance for the estimated 500 people affected by the calamity."Nobody can bring back the dead ... but we have to handle this disaster as best we can to move forward," Santos said.By Monday evening, Carlos Ivan Marquez, head of the National Disasters Unit, said 58 people had been killed and 37 injured. More than 150 disasters have struck the country over the past 40 years, claiming more than 32,000 lives and affecting more than 12 million people, according to the Inter-American Development Bank.The tragedy in Salgar appeared to be the single deadliest event since a 1999 earthquake in the city of Armenia that left hundreds dead. A wave of flooding during the 2011 rainy season left more than 100 dead."I said to my wife 'let's hold each and hope that God saves us,'" said Jorge Quintero, a local resident, describing to RCN TV how he was trapped between two raging currents that had taken with it two homes on either side of his own.
