Herzog: Jerusalem Must Remain United-"Zionist Union" leader says "times have changed" since he welcomed former President Clinton's proposal to split Jerusalem.By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 3/13/2015, 2:12 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

MK Yitzhak Herzog, leader of the “Zionist Union”, said on Thursday that he would not give away parts of Jerusalem as part of a peace agreement with the Palestinian Authority (PA).Speaking to Channel 10 News, Herzog did not rule out that “some sort of arrangements” could be worked out, but stressed, “Jerusalem must remain united as Israel’s capital. Period.”Herzog was asked about the plan proposed by former U.S. President Bill Clinton in 2000, which called for Jerusalem to be divided and for large settlement blocs to be annexed. Herzog at the time served as Cabinet secretary for then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak and, while he was not eligible to vote for the plan in that capacity, he did express support for it.“Many years have passed since then, and the way to deal with an agreement today is to see whether there even is someone to talk to," he explained, adding, “We must examine whether the Palestinian leadership is ready to go for such a move” but admitting that at this point it seems to him that "the Palestinians are not there."Herzog also told Channel 10 he intends to adopt a policy of deterrence against Hamas. He stated that he would not release terrorists and would not negotiate with terrorists and added that he plans to deploy troops in the Gaza Belt communities to provide increased security, and to mobilize the international community towards the demilitarization and reconstruction of Gaza.Herzog several months ago vowed that he would keep the Western Wall under Israeli sovereignty, statements which Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu later dismissed.Shortly after being elected Labor party leader, Herzog made a different statement, saying he envisions land swaps and the division of Jerusalem with the PA.

IDF Expects Major Terror Attack from Sinai-Hundreds of terrorists in Sinai recently expressed allegiance to ISIS – and the IDF is preparing for the worst, including in Eilat.By Kobi Finkler, Gil Ronen-First Publish: 3/12/2015, 7:31 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The IDF is preparing for possible multi-pronged terror attacks from the Sinai, a senior officer has told reporters. The Deputy Commander of the IDF's Border Division, Col. Arik Hen, said Thursday that the IDF is making preparations for scenarios that include infiltration from the sea, infiltration with vehicles rigged with explosives, deployment of human bombs, missile fire and coordinated simultaneous attacks. In a tour with military affairs reporters, Hen said that the threat from Sinai grew since the Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Makdis organization declared allegiance to Islamic State, or ISIS.Several hundred terrorists are thought to be operating in Sinai but there is a lack of intelligence information about their activities, he admitted. He added that there has been a noticeable rise in the volume of drug smuggling across the border, in which Israelis are also involved. The smuggling can escalate into a security incident, he explained: in the course of the past year, there were 28 cases in which shots were fired at IDF soldiers."The Eilat, Nitzana and Dead Sea sectors are the three big centers where millions of people and tourists pass,” Hen said. “Our watershed event was the attack at Ein Netafim, in which eight people were killed. Since then, we have arrived at every event in much stronger forces.”"We do not know something concrete about ISIS,” he said, “but we understand that the basic scenario has changed to a multi-pronged terror attack that will involve dozens of terrorists. This demand a proper response. We are building our forces accordingly.”According to Hen, reports that said the terrorists had recently stopped producing rockets are not necessarily true. The eastern border with Jordan, he said, is a peaceful one, and relations with the Jordanians are “at a high level.”The terror attacks at Ein Netafim took place August 18, 2011. In the first attack, three terrorists ambushed Egged bus #392 about 30 kilometers from Eilat as it traveled on Route 12 from Be'er Sheva towards the city, opening fire with automatic weapons. Most of the passengers in the bus were IDF soldiers heading to the Red Sea resort city on leave. They fired back at the terrorists as the bus kept driving. The terrorists targeted a second Egged bus less than an hour later, and one of them served as a human bomb, blowing himself up and killing the bus's driver. The terrorist then fired at two civilian cars, killing one person in the first car and four in the second. First Sergeant Moshe Naftali of Ofra was killed in a firefight with the terrorists, and a counter-terrorism Border Police officer, Pascal Avrahami, was killed later by sniper fire aimed at him from across the border.

Bennett: If We're Not Big Enough, We Won't be in the Coalition-Jewish Home chairman calls on voters who are disappointed by Netanyahu to remain on the right and not vote for the left.By Ido Ben Porat and Elad Benari-First Publish: 3/13/2015, 12:12 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett on Thursday evening called on voters who were disappointed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to vote for Jewish Home instead of choosing a left-wing party.
Speaking to Channel 10 News, Bennett warned that if the Jewish Home does not win enough seats in Tuesday’s elections, it will be left out of the coalition."We've proven that it is possible to be right-wing, Zionist and social," he said. Asked about the State Comptroller's report which revealed that his party did not report about some of its sources of funding during the previous election campaign, Bennett replied, "These questions do not interest the people of Israel. What bothers the people of Israel is how to bring down prices. These hallucinatory questions are being asked only because we are going up in polls."Bennett explained that his main objective at this point is to prevent votes from going from the right to the center-left."I've recently seen people who went from Netanyahu to Kahlon. What I say is this: Those who are angry at Netanyahu that he is not social, vote for me. Stay in the rightist bloc and don’t go left,” he said.Bennett estimated that despite the gap in the polls between the Likud and the “Zionist Union”, Netanyahu is the one who will head the next government."Buji is unable to form a government. Maybe among you in the media there is a great desire for him to replace the right, but Netanyahu will be the next prime minister,"  Bennett said, though he expressed concern that "if we are too small, we will not be brought into the government."A new poll released earlier Thursday continues to show Likud falling behind Labor and Hatnua's "Zionist Union" a week before elections, with the distance between the two remaining at 21 seats to Likud and 24 to Labor. The poll, which was conducted by the Maagar Mochot Institute for the haredi radio station Kol Barama, confirms findings by several recent polls in the last several days showing Likud trailing by 21 to 24. However it is estimated that Likud has a better chance of forming a coalition, and therefore may be given the nod to try creating a government first even if it falls behind Labor.Meanwhile, Netanyahu launched a media blitz Thursday, granting interviews to Israeli television channels as well as other news sources, in a last-minute attempt to shore up support ahead of Tuesday's national elections. In one of the interviews, Netanyahu told Channel 2 that he would not agree to a rotation government with Labor: "I will not be a prime minister in rotation, and that should be prevented," he stated.

Public Warned: Don't Believe the Polls-Netanyahu in media blitz says Labor could defeat him, but could the polls be fabricated? By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 3/12/2015, 9:25 PM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu launched a media blitz Thursday, granting interviews to Israeli television channels as well as other news sources, in a last-minute attempt to shore up support ahead of Tuesday's national elections.Netanyahu cited polls that show Likud's main rival, Labor under Yitzhak Herzog, leads over Likud by several MKs. While most of the public wants a right wing government, he said – if Labor defeats Likud, the president could task it with creating the next government with the support of the Arab MKs.However, News1 editor Yoav Yitzhak warned readers that the polls are not necessarily accurate.“ Guys, don't believe the polls,” he wrote. “Some of them are purposely slanted. Yedioth Aharonoth refrained from publishing a poll last weekend whose results indicated that Likud is gaining strength.” Netanyahu gave interviews to Channels 2 and 11. He agreed to give an interview to Channel 10, too, but his condition was that Raviv Drucker, a journalist who has been attacking him and his wife ferociously for years, not be the interviewer. Channel 10 decided to forego the interview.Netanyahu told Channel 2 that he would not agree to a rotation government with Labor: "I will not be a prime minister in rotation, and that should be prevented," he stated.Netanyahu also lashed out against foreign-funded elements seeking to unseat him, to force Israel into making concessions against its good."There are vasts amounts of funds flowing from abroad, millions of dollars," he said, claiming that "European states and left wing people from outside" Israel were funding non-governmental organizations that encourage Arabs and left wing Israelis to vote.According to Netanyahu, this was "because they understand that if Tzipi and Buji reach (the premiership), they'll give everything up, and withdraw to the 1967 borders and divide Jerusalem," he said, using Herzog's nickname.AFP contributed to this report.

Shimon Peres Expresses Support for Yitzhak Herzog-Former president Shimon Peres says Thursday he endorses 'responsible' and 'dedicated' Yitzhak Herzog for prime minister.By Hezki Ezra, Cynthia Blank-First Publish: 3/12/2015, 12:34 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Former President Shimon Peres announced Thursday that he is endorsing Labor leader Yitzhak Herzog for Israel's next prime minister.Peres is himself a former Labor leader, who served as acting prime minister on three different occasions in three different decades. He left the party in 2005 to join Ariel Sharon's Kadima, under which he was elected Israel's 9th President in 2007.In a memo, published only five days before elections, Peres said "Israel's democracy is approaching election day. It is natural that people of different opinions will vote according to their consciences.""As for me - I support Yitzhak Herzog for prime minister. I have known Yitzhak Herzog and his family for many years. I saw him from up close excellently performing senior positions and taking part in discussions and making serious decision for Israel's future.""This is a considerate leader who has maintained his integrity and is filled with responsibility for and dedication to the Israeli public," Peres continued."I am convinced that Yitzhak Herzog will make a suitable prime minister and that he will be a leader who will know how to bridge gaps, and connect Israeli society with the glue of solidarity and hope."Two days ago, Channel Two reported that Herzog had been in contact with Peres' associates about the former president expressing his support for prime ministerial candidate.Herzog denied the report, calling it nonsense, and claiming he had nothing to do with it.

PLO's Barghouti: Our Greatest Hope is for Netanyahu to Lose-In a revealing interview, Mustafa Barghouti says that given everything, the PA prefers Yitzhak Herzog over Binyamin Netanyahu.By Moshe Cohen-First Publish: 3/12/2015, 2:58 PM

Just after Labor leader Yitzhak Herzog received an endorsement from former President Shimon Peres on Thursday, top Palestinian Authority official Mustafa Barghouti also advocated - albeit indirectly - for the leftist candidate.“We all truly desire that Binyamin Netanyahu fall and be replaced, and that his administration come to an end,” Barghouti told the NRG news site in an interview. With that, he said, he did not expect an administration led by Herzog to be much different than the one currently led by Netanyahu.Barghouti, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization's Central Committee who is considered a leader of both the First and Second Intifadas, said that the PA does not expect major changes in Israeli policy, regardless of who is elected.“We have no expectations from these elections,” he said. “The comments made by both Herzog and his partner Tzipi Livni that they will never compromise on Jerusalem and Gush Etzion are indications of their attitudes, which does not leave room for hope among us.”Barghouti said that from the PA's perspective, all of Israel has turned to the Right, and the campaigns by various political parties reflect this shift in viewpoint.“Most of the Zionist parties are using harsh expressions and the incitement has reached record levels in order to get voters. The only parties not acting in this manner are Meretz and the Joint Arab List.”Addressing the latter party, Barghouti called its formation “a great development for the Palestinians, because it will build more and better connections between Palestinians in the West Bank and in Israel proper. It is wonderful that they united despite the differences in ideology, and I see this as a historic move for Palestinians in Israel.”Besides the success of the Joint Arab List, Barghouti said, the best the PA could hope for was that Netanyahu would no longer be Prime Minister.“We are not interfering in the Israeli election, but we truly hope that Netanyahu will no longer run the government. The period of his rule was the darkest ever for Palestinians.""The failure of the Oslo Accords has caused a rift between Israeli and Palestinian societies, and a misunderstanding among the Israeli public that without the establishment of a Palestinian state, Israel will either become an apartheid state, or a democratic state of all its citizens in which the Jews will no longer be a majority.”

Report praises Israel’s effort to prevent civilian casualties in Gaza-IDF went far beyond its legal obligations, says panel of former senior US military officials and legal experts-By JTA March 13, 2015, 2:17 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — Israel’s military went far beyond its legal obligation last summer during its Gaza operation to prevent civilian casualties, according to report by a panel of former senior U.S. military officials and legal experts. The Gaza Conflict Task Force report, which was released Wednesday, was commissioned by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, or JINSA.The task force called the conflict “Hybrid Warfare: where non-state actors equipped with advanced weapons operate in densely populated urban areas, disregarding the safety of civilians and capitalizing on its enemy’s efforts to comply with the law.”The report praised the Israel Defense Forces for its effort to limit civilian casualties, such as alerting residents in a targeted area through phone calls, leaflets and low impact explosives, but also emphasized that the United States and Israel should study the conflict in order to find a balance between mitigating civilian casualties and achieving mission objectives.Michael Makovsky, JINSA’s chief executive officer, said the task force compiled the report after making a fact-finding mission to Israel, where they met with Israeli, United Nations and Palestinians officials, as well as analyzing primary and secondary research.JINSA, a Washington-based nonprofit group, advocates for a strong U.S. military relationship with Israel.Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have accused Israel of committing war crimes and violations of the laws of war during its Operation Protective Edge against Hamas in Gaza.

Netanyahu warns of ‘real danger’ he won’t be re-elected-Likud leader claims ‘foreign governments’ seeking to oust him; Herzog says he’s ready to be PM; Lapid: March 17 must be Netanyahu’s last day in power By Times of Israel staff March 12, 2015, 9:15 pm 28

With his Likud party trailing in the polls ahead of Tuesday’s elections, Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged Thursday that “there’s a real danger” he would be ousted as prime minister. If his Likud party “can’t close the gap in the polls in the next few days,” he told Channel 2 news, “there’s certainly a danger that Tzipi Livni and [Isaac] Herzog will be prime minister,” he added — referring to the two leaders of the merged Zionist Union opposition. Still, he said, he didn’t regret calling the elections, “because the [previous] government couldn’t function any more.”Acknowledging that “I didn’t do enough” to bring down housing prices, a key election issue, Netanyahu said he was certain, however, that most of the “national camp” and “most of the public” want to keep him in office. He urged those Israelis not to give their votes to other satellite parties. “If they want me as prime minister,” Netanyahu said, “the only certain way of ensuring this is to vote Likud.”The interview came as Netanyahu launched a media blitz on Thursday, speaking to several Israeli outlets — though notably not Channel 10 — in a last ditch bid to bolster his party’s position after several polls showed Likud slumping behind the surging Zionist Union. While recent polls have Herzog’s Zionist Union beating the ruling Likud party by three or four seats, analysts still say the party has a potentially harder task than Netanyahu of assembling a majority coalition.Netanyahu protested to Channel 2 that tens of millions of dollars had been funneled from European states and from left-wingers overseas to prevent his re-election. “There are governments that want to bring down the right; they oppose me,” he said.He also spoke of a major “coalition” of forces, including parts of the Israeli media, who were seeking to oust the Israeli right from power and install a government that would relinquish territory to the Palestinians. “Any land relinquished will be grabbed by Islamic extremists,” he warned. He ruled out the notion of sharing the prime minister in a unity government with Zionist Union. “I won’t rotate the premiership,” Netanyahu vowed. “It must be prevented.”Asked if he would quit politics if he loses on March 17, he said: “I’m not dealing with the question of quitting. I’m dealing with winning.”Herzog, whose party is polling at 24-25 seats compared to 21 for Netanyahu’s Likud, said in an interview on the same news program that, “I don’t intend to rotate the prime ministership with Netanyahu; I intended to replace him… Netanyahu has acknowledged that he has failed.”“I intend to win,” Herzog said, urging Israelis to “vote for the Zionist Camp… and enable me to build a strong coalition… If you want change, if you want hope, come with me.”Asked whether he had the experience for the post, Herzog stressed that he had succeeded in five ministerial positions, and was “ready for the job… We’ve seen that a prime minister with experience has achieved almost nothing.”Herzog said his promise to rotate the prime ministership with Livni after two years stood, and that their partnership had “engendered the political revolution that you see unfolding before your eyes now.”Questioned over whether he would cede sovereignty to the Palestinians anywhere in Jerusalem, Herzog said Netanyahu had “weakened Jerusalem” while he stood for “a unified Jerusalem… My father was the first governor of Jerusalem in 1967. Netanyahu shouldn’t preach to me about Jerusalem… The man who placed the division of Jerusalem, heaven forbid, on the agenda was Netanyahu.”He said he would seek to resume peace talks with the Palestinians, however, in the context of dealings with moderate Arab states.Responding to Netanyahu’s complaints about foreign funding of efforts to oust him, Herzog noted that American billionaire Sheldon Adelson funds a free daily newspaper deeply supportive of the prime minister. He dismissed the claim of foreign governments seeking to oust the prime minister. In a Channel 1 interview, Herzog said the Etzion Bloc of settlements was “as important” as Tel Aviv and that “all the settlement blocs will come under Israeli sovereignty in a permanent accord” with the Palestinians. Nonetheless, settlements outside the blocs would have to be evacuated, and there should not be further investment in them, Herzog said.Earlier Thursday, Herzog hit the campaign trail in Tel Aviv’s Carmel Market, while other candidates stepped up their various battles to shore up support in the course of the day.Orthodox-nationalist Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett, for instance, castigated Moshe Kahlon of Kulanu for ostensibly shifting to the left: “To be social, you don’t have to be a leftist,” Bennett declared.Kahlon, for his part, went to the southern town of Kiryat Gat, to expose what he said were false claims from centrist rival and former finance minister Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid about thousands of housing starts in the area.He had the camera pan across open fields. Yesh Atid immediately released footage of trucks at work nearby in the early stages of construction. At a campaign event attended by what Yesh Atid said were more than 2,000 people Thursday evening, Lapid said that next Tuesday “needs to be Netanyahu’s last day as prime minister of Israel. Not because he’s right wing, not because he’s from the Likud, but because he doesn’t care. Because he stopped caring about the citizens of Israel and all he cares about is his job, and his motorcade and to keep a bullet proof glass wall between him and the real problems of the people of Israel.”Lapid said “the streets are burning” with support for Yesh Atid, and that it would fare better than the 12-14 seats polls are predicting. “It’s even stronger than last time. It happened under the radar again… We’ve all felt it over the past two weeks. The people who said, ‘I’ve come back to you,’ the people who say ‘I didn’t vote for you last time, but this time we’re with you,’ and the people who say ‘it’s time to change Israel.'”Also Thursday, former president and prime minister Shimon Peres threw his support behind Herzog for prime minister. In a statement announcing his endorsement, Peres, who spent most of his political career in the Labor Party, hailed Herzog as a “levelheaded leader who is reliable, and full of responsibility and dedication to the Israeli public.”In response, the Likud party said in a statement: “It’s obvious that Peres, an avowed leftist, supports [Herzog] and Tzipi. He is the architect of the Oslo Accords, an enthusiastic supporter of the disengagement, and a proponent of withdrawal from the West Bank.”
