Li-ion batteries loaded as cargo onto MH370 without additional security screening-Bernama | Updated: March 09, 2015-astro awani

KUALA LUMPUR: The shipment of Li-ion batteries transported from Penang to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) did not undergo additional security screening before being loaded as cargo onto MH370.According to the factual information released by the Malaysian ICAO Annex 13 Safety Investigation for MH370, the batteries from Motorola Solutions Penang were "not regulated as dangerous goods because the packing adhered to the guidelines as per Lithium Battery Guidance Document"."The shipment did not go through security screening in Penang but was inspected physically by MASKargo personnel and went through Customs inspection and clearance before the truck was sealed and allowed to leave the Penang Cargo Complex," the information said. The factual information was released together with the interim statement of the investigation.According to the information, the batteries which were assembled on March 7, 2014 were transported to KLIA by MASKargo truck and arrived at the KLIA Cargo Complex on the evening of March 7, 2014.There were two different models of Li-ion battery consignment on MH370 on March 8, 2014, namely the PMNN4073AR Li-ion batteries rated at 7.4V, 11.8Wh and PMNN4081BRC Li-ion batteries rated at 7.4V, 11.1Wh.Of the total consignment of 2,453 kg, only 221 kg were Li-ion batteries, while the rest were chargers and radio accessories. It was noted that there were 99 shipments of lithium-ion batteries on MAS flights to Beijing from January to May 2014.There was also a special load of 4,566 kg of mangosteen carried on board MH370, which originated from Muar in Johor and Sumatra in Indonesia.According to the factual information, the mangosteens were packed in plastic baskets of eight to nine kg per basket before being loaded on to the trucks which proceeded to the MAS Cargo Complex at KLIA.The baskets were loaded into four Unit Load Device (ULD) containers that were then inspected by the Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) of Malaysia."After obtaining the clearance, the forwarding agent handed over the consignments to the MAS loaders to load them into the aircraft," it said.It also stated that there were a total of 85 shipments of mangosteen to Beijing, China from January to May 2014.

Factual report on MH370 gives convincing details flight ends in Indian Ocean-Bernama | Updated: March 09, 2015-astro awani

KUALA LUMPUR: The Factual Information on the investigation of Malaysian Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 provides a clearer picture and more convincing information that MH370 ended in the Indian Ocean.Principal Specialist at Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology, University Kuala Lumpur Ahmad Maulan Bardai said the collected satellite data had shown detailed path of the flight before it lost contact completely."Now we are more convinced that it had ended in the Indian Ocean. Analysis of data from the Inmarsat has shown the flight had changed course after flying passed the tip of Sumatra and heading to the southerly direction."And based on that information, it is right that the search and rescue team search in the Indian Ocean," he told Bernama. The report, released by Malaysian International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 13 Safety Investigation Team for MH370 on Sunday detailed records of preparations for the flight, communications between cockpit and air traffic control, flight path collected from various satellite data, its crew and cargo on that ill-fated flight.Aircraft information and flight history of MH370 was also recorded in the report. The Beijing bound flight MH370 disappeared from radar screens with all 239 passengers and crew on board on March 8, 2014.It had made an air turn back from its intended flight path an hour after it took off from KL International Airport (KLIA) at 12.42am.Ahmad Maulan said that the fuel capacity of the aircraft on that ill-fated flight had enabled it to travel towards the south. The report had revealed that MH370 carried 49,100 kilogrammes of fuel that gave an endurance of seven and an half hours. The planned flight duration was five hours and 34 minutes, it said."The aircraft can travel 900 kilometers per hour. From the time it made an air turn back, it can still fly for another 5,400 kilometres," Ahmad Maulan said, adding that it could have glided for another hour without fuel before it ended in the Indian Ocean. On another matter, he said that underwater locator beacon (ULB) battery of the solid state flight data recoder (SSFDR), which was reported expired 14 months before the accident, had no major impact on the recording as SSFDR was operated by aircraft power."The only unfortunate thing when the battery expired was that it would not be able to emit beacon when the plane crashed," he said. However, he noted that the fact how the expired battery was not changed and that it had been overlooked by aircraft safety auditing report was rather questionable.

AirAsia X flight makes emergency landing in Australia-AFP | Updated: March 10, 2015-astro awani

SYDNEY: An AirAsia X flight made an emergency landing in Australia on Tuesday after the aircraft developed a problem with its map navigation display, regulators said. The flight, listed on tracking websites as an Airbus A330, left Sydney en route to Kuala Lumpur but turned back and landed in the southern Australian city of Melbourne."They had some kind of problem with their map navigation display system in the cockpit," a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority told AFP.The long-haul, low-cost Malaysian airline confirmed the diversion but was unable to immediately say how many people were on board the flight."There was a technical difficulty," an airline spokesman said."The plane has now been rectified and has now been cleared for take-off."Air Services Australia, which oversees the country's air traffic control, said it understood that Flight XAX223 diverted to Melbourne rather than return to Sydney because the weather was better. The Malaysian group suffered its first fatal incident in late December, when AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crashed in stormy weather with 162 people on board off Indonesia. That followed two Malaysia Airlines incidents last year which left more than 500 people dead, raising concerns among some travellers about the safety of the country's carriers.
