Tears for MH370 as mystery persists on anniversary-UPDATED: 08 Mar 2015 19:55-CNA

Emotional families marked the first anniversary of the disappearance of flight MH370 on Sunday (Mar 8) as a new report said the battery on its black box locator beacon had expired, but shed no new light on the cause of the disaster.A woman holds a sign during a silent march on March 8, 2015 towards the Elysee Palace in Paris to deliver a petition, signed by 18,000 people, on the first anniversary of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

KUALA LUMPUR: Emotional families marked the first anniversary of the disappearance of flight MH370 on Sunday (Mar 8) as a new report said the battery on its black box locator beacon had expired, but shed no new light on the cause of the disaster.Prime Minister Najib Razak said his nation remained committed to the search for the Malaysia Airlines jet, believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, and was hopeful it would be found.Next of kin, many of whom have criticised Malaysia's handling of the disaster, held ceremonies in Kuala Lumpur and Beijing to remember the missing and urged authorities to never abandon the expensive and arduous search."The only answer I want is where is the plane, then only will we know," said Jacquita Gonzales, wife of the flight's cabin crew supervisor Patrick Gomes. "The whole world has heard what he (Najib) has said, so they can't go back on their word."A report by an international investigative team released Sunday raised no red flags relating to the crew or the aircraft's condition to indicate any cause for the disappearance. But it said the 30-day battery powering the underwater locator beacon on the flight data recorder was due to expire in December 2012.Although the battery on the plane's cockpit voice recorder was up-to-date, this could have contributed to the failure to find the plane, said Gerry Soejatman, a Jakarta-based aviation consultant."My major worry is that (search vessels) may have gone over the aircraft but not heard the pings because of this," said Soejatman, who added that the report otherwise largely restated what is already known about MH370.A year-long hunt in the deep ocean far off Australia's west coast, where satellite data indicate the Boeing 777 crashed, has yielded nothing yet."Together with our international partners, we have followed the little evidence that exists," Najib said in a statement. "Malaysia remains committed to the search, and hopeful that MH370 will be found."

'A MOST PAINFUL YEAR'

The plane inexplicably veered from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing route on March 8 of last year with 239 passengers and crew aboard.Relatives and friends of the missing held an emotional public remembrance in Kuala Lumpur that included prayers and live video links with other next of kin around the world.A temporary wall erected for the occasion contained scrawled messages such as "Never give up hope" and "I miss you so much brother and sister, please come back.""My mother was on MH370. It has been a year so far. It has been a most painful year for many of us, a never-ending battle," said Grace Subathirai. "My mother was my world, everything to me," she added, her voice breaking. In Beijing, relatives who have bitterly criticised Malaysia's national carrier and government for their handling of the crisis, held a small protest near the Malaysian embassy to mark the anniversary.Under a heavy police presence that blocked off the embassy, they shouted slogans including "Fight to the end" and "Malaysian government -- apologise to us!"Earlier Sunday, the relatives visited the Lama Temple, a popular Tibetan Buddhist place of worship and tourist site, to discreetly pay their personal respects. China's ruling Communist Party commonly clamps down on organised gatherings or collective expressions of anger as it seeks to enforce stability. Some families still hope their loved ones are alive, clinging to conspiracy theories of a hijack or kidnapping.Sunday's report said investigators had probed a range of issues including the jet's captain and co-pilot's personal, psychological, and financial profiles, and the backgrounds of the 10 cabin crew. But although some suspicion had fallen on the cockpit crew of pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah and his co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, the report mentioned no evidence suggesting their involvement. It also said that according to available data and maintenance records, nothing alarming was detected in the plane's major mechanical systems. It noted that as investigators still lack any trace of the jet the investigation remained a work in progress. Some next of kin who examined the report rejected its findings. Sarah Bajc, whose partner Philip Wood was on board, ridiculed the report for saying investigators had interviewed 120 people."That's less than our tiny underfunded private investigation has done," she said, referring to an ongoing private probe launched by a group of next of kin.The report, however, said civilian radar had tracked the plane for a short time after it diverted on March 8 of last year. Previous Malaysian statements had indicated that only its military radar had monitored it, though it took no action.Families have said Malaysian inaction allowed the plane to go missing. Malaysian officials could not be reached for comment.Earlier on Sunday, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said that while the current search is expected to be completed in May, it could be extended if there are "reasonable leads".- AFP/ir

Living with hope every single day, but need answers - MH370 passenger's husband-Astro Awani | Updated: March 08, 2015

PRAHLAD: The entire world needs to know what happened to that flight as the safety of millions of people is at stake.PUNE: Prahlad Shirsath vividly remembers this day last year. He was in North Korea and his wife Kranti was living with their sons in Pune, India. She spoke to him from India and told him she was ready to travel alone to meet him.She spoke about their sons and described flowers growing in their backyard too. Then, she left to travel thousands of kilometres to meet and spend time with her husband.A year later, Prahlad is still hoping to be reunited with his wife Kranti. And, this time he has made the journey back to India."I was slated to leave North Korea and come back to Pune so Kranti decided to come to spend a few days there before I came back," Prahlad reminisced. He even spoke to her just as she got on board the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight. It was midnight in Korea and she asked him to sleep well.Next morning when Prahlad woke up, he thought the plane was delayed. Only later did the news break that MH370 was missing. He collapsed hearing it."I remember calling the embassy and several friends. Since there was no flight to Beijing from North Korea that day, I travelled by road. In Beijing, a few friends were waiting for me. Malaysia Airlines did everything to make me and other relatives of passengers comfortable but it meant nothing to us," he said. After getting no concrete response in Beijing, Prahlad travelled to Kuala Lumpur. "Even in KL I got no answers, so I decided to come back to India to be with my children," he said.A year later, he said he knows exactly the same information that was given to him in the first few days. "How can a whole Boeing disappear with no trace? There has to be an explanation."For Prahlad, life has moved in fast motion. He has now moved back to India to be with his sons and stays home looking after them."I am surviving on my savings. I cook, clean and do most of the house work. Hopefully soon I will be able to go out and work. I still pray for my wife. I ask God for answers. But I don't beg him. I am hopeful." As MH370's disappearance completes one year, Prahlad wants the truth no matter how hard it is."We want the truth, but we want evidence for it. Not just the family, the entire world needs to know what happened to that flight. The safety of millions of people is at stake here."

Speculate all you want, I know my son is alive, says MH370 passenger's mum-Astro Awani | Updated: March 08, 2015

NORMAH: The speculations are all empty talk, there is still no proof of anything concrete.
KUALA LUMPUR: “You can say what you want, you can pay me millions of ringgit in compensation, you can announce whatever you like or speculate on anything, I know my Amri is still around.”  Normah Jaafar’s voice breaks as she says this, but she is steadfast in her belief that her son, Mohd Khairul Amri Selamat, 30, is not lost.“Let people say that he’s no longer there. For me Amri is still around, I know he is. Why are people saying that he’s gone?” she asks.“I’ve heard people saying so many things, that the plane is not missing, that it is being hidden, but all these are empty talk, there is no proof of anything,” the 57-year-old tells Astro AWANI.There has been much speculation surrounding the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370, one of the more recent ones being a conspiracy involving Russia, and that the plane has been taken to Antarctica. On January 29 this year, the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) had declared Flight MH370 as an “accident” and that all passengers and crew members are presumed dead.Just days before the anniversary of the MH370 disappearance, MAS in a statement expressed hope that the search mission could solve the mystery surrounding the missing aircraft and find the much-awaited answers.Said Normah, her health began to shake a little after the DCA’s latest announcement about the flight.“I contracted a fever and have yet to fully recover ever since. I don’t feel well, am still in shock and I’m missing my son tremendously,” she said, sobbing furiously.Meanwhile, another next-of kin who wished to remain anonymous, described the various speculations are “rubbish”.“The speculations are never ending. It’s all rubbish. I’m tired of all this nonsense, I’m tired of commenting. I’m just tired,” he said.Another MH370 passenger relative, who also declined to reveal his identity, is calling for all Malaysians to continue to pray for everyone on board the ill-fated flight.“Hopefully the search mission will find closure. I hope the truth will be discovered, insha'Allah (God willing),” he said. The Boeing-777 aircraft was ferrying 239 passengers including 12 crew members from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China when it went off radars on March 8 last year.

Committed to find the truth, says partner of MH370 passenger-Linawati Adnan, Astro Awani | Updated: March 08, 2015-ASTRO AWANI

KUALA LUMPUR:Philip Wood was one of three Americans who were on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.An enthusiastic traveller, the 50-year-old IBM executive had been transferred to Malaysia from Beijing, China, with his partner, Sarah Bajc. The trip to Beijing on March 8 last year was his last planned trip before settling down in Kuala Lumpur.A year on, Bajc, who teaches economics and business in one of the international schools here, said she is slowly coming to terms with the ambiguity of this whole ordeal. Speaking to Astro AWANI, the 49-year-old said she was shocked at first when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that the Boeing-777 jet shockingly made its stop in the Indian Ocean. The shock soon turned into anger, caused by the uncertainty of the actual scenario. The pain of losing somebody important in her life has been further aggravated by the chaos, conspiracy theories, the media and the seemingly lack of information from Malaysian officials."I continued to work full time, I still have three kids to raise, and I have a great family as well as friends who are extremely supportive. But on an emotional level, it's really hard to move on because we have no answers," says Bajc. She said she expected the Declaration of Loss (D.O.L.) by the Malaysian government, but it surprised her more that it was made that soon – on January 29 – barely a year since the plane disappeared."To me, the announcement seems suspiciously convenient – it's like a 'wishful statement' on their part," she said.Bajc said there was not a day from that fateful March 8, 2014 that she didn't think of Wood. She says she will stay in Malaysia for as long as necessary to find a resolution to her partner's disappearance. - Facebook/Sarah Hamil Bajc-Bajc says, for her and her family, everyday is a sad day. Not a single day has gone by that she hasn’t thought of Wood. She says this March 8 will be particularly difficult for her and that all she wants to do is to spend time alone and reflect on the good times she had with her partner."I am committed to finding the truth, I will stay another year. I will stay here as long as I need to find a resolution," she says.

MH370: Families not ready to accept authorities' official line By Maria Siow, Channel NewsAsia UPDATED: 08 Mar 2015 21:15

BEIJING: A year after Malaysia Airlines MH370 disappeared, search teams are no closer to unearthing the mystery. And it's meant that family members of the 239 people on board still have no idea what's happened to their loved ones.Family members in China, who represent two-thirds of the people on the plane, have refused to accept the official line that the airplane crashed.Jiang Hui lost his 70-year-old mother who was travelling back to the Chinese capital after a holiday in Malaysia. He says what aggravated his grief is the way Malaysia Airlines and the Malaysian government have handled the situation.According to him, there has been a lack of support, information and co-operation. Jiang represents all Chinese family members, and has flown to Malaysia three times in the past 12 months to speak on their behalf. But so far, he has been unable to get any clarity from Malaysia Airlines (MAS)."Whoever we approached put the blame on others and shirked responsibility,” said Jiang. “Malaysia Airlines blamed Civil Aviation. The Transport Ministry blamed Malaysia Airlines. No one listens to anyone else. We spent our first night at the airport terminal hall. The second night was spent sleeping by the roadside outside the Airline headquarters."Jiang and other relatives have also taken MAS to task for calling the US$50,000 given to families 'compensation". The money was meant to help defray their travelling expenses. But the families argue that the term "compensation" implies the case has been categorised a mishap, even though search teams have not found any wreckage or evidence the plane crashed."At the Beijing service centre, they do not behave like the responsible party or the offender in solving problems or comforting family members,” he said. “The tables are turned. They are like the lords and we the criminals.“Whatever we do or say we have to be careful. Any small mistake will lead to them calling the police. At least 20 to 30 family members have already been sent to the police station.“We have to speak in a pleasant manner before they will help with simple matters. If we are slightly emotional, they will accuse us of having a poor attitude and will threaten to cease all communication with us."Families have released an official statement questioning the airline's suggestion that they should accept that their loved ones are dead. They say it is "cruel and inconceivable" and have insisted that the search operation goes on until answers are found.Even though the search for the missing plane cannot continue at its past or even current intensity, aviation experts say the search must still continue until the plane is found because without knowing what happened, the international community cannot take the necessary safeguards and mechanisms to prevent a similar incident from happening again.Relatives like Jiang Hui certainly share this opinion.- CNA/ek

Alien abduction? Stolen by Russia? MH370 theories keep coming BY Jane Wardell, Reuters-First posted: Wednesday, March 04, 2015 04:25 PM EST | Updated: Thursday, March 05, 2015 07:53 AM EST-One year on, MH370 theories abound-TORONTO SUN

SYDNEY – A year on from the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, an extraordinary amount of key data remains unknown - fuelling conspiracy theories and heated online debate about one of aviation's biggest mysteries. An information vacuum has nourished a cottage industry of experts and amateurs in cyberspace who continue to exhaustively pick the case apart in a bid to find out just what happened to the plane and its 239 passengers and crew. The resulting theories range from the wild - alien abduction, MH370 and its doomed fleetmate MH17 were the same plane - to sober, science-based arguments that the plane is in the southern Indian Ocean, but not necessarily in the current search area. What they all agree on is that some key pieces of the puzzle are missing."It's amazing how much information we don't have after looking at this case for all this time," said Jeff Wise, an aviation expert whose recently published Kindle book 'The Plane That Wasn't There' reached No.1 on Amazon's bestseller lists. The Boeing 777 lost contact with air traffic control shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, bound for Beijing, early on March 8, 2014, as it flew across the Gulf of Thailand close to a navigational waypoint called Igari.Just about everything that happened thereafter is hotly debated.Malaysia's air force said its radar tracked the plane as it turned back, re-crossed the Malay Peninsula and flew out of range off the northwest coast.Official investigators used analysis from British firm Inmarsat of "pings" to its satellite from MH370 to plot two vast arcs - one to the north and one to the south - across which it may have flown. Combining those faint pings with data from the plane, they concluded it had turned south and flown for hours before crashing into the southern Indian Ocean. That conclusion has been challenged by aviation bloggers and freelance investigators, who have questioned key radar plots and assumptions about the speed and fuel burn of the jet.Lending credence to some of the sceptics, Tim Clark, head of Emirates Airlines, said last November he believed information was being withheld and questioned the Malaysian military's assertion that it took no action because it identified MH370 as "friendly" when it suddenly reversed course. The Malaysian government, which is due to release an interim report on the investigation before the March 8 anniversary, has always denied withholding information and said its position was unchanged.

HEATED DEBATE

New York-based Wise, like many others, confessed to becoming somewhat obsessed, even buying additional satellite data in an attempt to confirm his theory the plane flew north along national borders to avoid radar before landing in Kazakhstan.Another independent investigator, retired legal investigator John Fiorentino, whose early challenges to reports of sightings of wreckage in the Indian Ocean were taken up by families' group Voice370, has pressed on despite ill-health.That level of devotion has led to bad blood between supporters of rival theories. The Independent Group (IG), comprised of around a dozen satellite, data, maths and aviation experts, expelled Wise this week following articles linked to his book."It's a bunch of garbage," said New Zealand-based IG member Duncan Steel.Wise, a former pilot, has himself banned anybody who uses the word "lightning" from his website. Fiorentino has been blocked from several blogs for, he says, questioning theories. And those theories run the gamut.Alongside Wise's Russian theory is the suggestion by the boss of former French regional airline Proteus, Marc Dugain, that the plane flew towards the U.S. Navy base at Diego Garcia and was shot down.

RIGHT TO KNOW

IG, perhaps the most credible of the groups, has maintained that the plane is in the southern Indian Ocean, near the so-called "7th arc" currently being searched by an Australian-led international team, with whom it has been in regular contact. But the group stresses that missing data would more clearly pinpoint the resting place and that it may well be outside the current search area. Many of the bloggers cite the right for relatives and loved ones of the missing to know what happened as a driving factor.Sarah Bajc, the partner of passenger Phillip Wood, is thankful for the persistence of those who continue to pursue their own investigations into what happened."I'm exceedingly grateful for the efforts put forth by the IG ... they are invaluable to point out the inaccuracies of the fabricated story we have been told," Bajc said by email.Bajc, however, does not subscribe to IG's theory, believing that the plane is not in the southern Indian Ocean at all."I want an independent investigation ... perhaps led by the U.N.," she said. "Despite extensive efforts we still have no idea why MH370 went silent at Igari, or where the plane is now.

ALLTIME
