WASHINGTON — As israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu landed in the US, and thousands of pro-Israel activists in town readied to go to bat for greater Congressional oversight on any Iran deal, the White House went on the attack, publishing a blog post plugging President Barack Obama’s positive record toward the Jewish State.A blog-post titled “five key facts you need to know about the US-Israel relationship under President [Barack] Obama” sent around by the White House Sunday evening touted Obama’s credentials as a supporter to Israel, and also emphasized that the United States has had a long history of support with Israel.The post comes after a week of intense back-and-forth between Israel and Washington over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Tuesday speech before both houses of Congress, and as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual policy conference got under way.“Under President Obama’s leadership, American engagement with Israel has grown and strengthened to an unprecedented degree,” the fact-sheet read. “From meeting frequently with Israeli leaders to ensuring that Israel remains the largest recipient of U.S. foreign assistance, the President is deeply committed to helping Israel maintain its strength and security.”The blog post highlighted that “the first country to recognize Israel, the United States has forged a deep and unshakable bond with Israel through a multifaceted relationship that reflects the depth and breadth of the ties between our people and the values that we share.”Last month, a Netanyahu campaign commercial compared the current prime minister to founding father David Ben-Gurion, noting that then-US secretary of state George Marshall opposed the creation of the state of Israel.Describing Obama as “a strong defender,” the post noted that “President Obama has strengthened Israel’s defense in concrete and unprecedented ways.” It cited numerous budgetary benefits that Israel has received since 2009 as evidence, as well as the continued regularly scheduled joint military exercises between the nations’ armies.It went on to emphasize Obama’s role in “leading global efforts to defend Israel’s legitimacy on the world stage” as well as describing him as an “economic partner.”While many of the bullet points emphasized policies that were carried out through the administration and legislative initiatives, the blog highlighted Obama’s personal role as “a proponent of peace.”“The President has strongly supported Israel in its quest for peace with its neighbors,” the fact-sheet read, emphasizing that “President Obama has repeatedly stood up for a two-state solution that ensures the peace and security of Israelis and Palestinians.”It also ascribed a high level of presidential involvement in the failed attempts to broker a comprehensive peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority that ultimately collapsed last spring.“Under the President’s direction, Secretary [John] Kerry initiated an intensive, collaborative effort to facilitate negotiations for a comprehensive peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians,” the blog asserted. “The President prioritized Israel’s security by asking one of our foremost military experts to help develop security arrangements that ensure a two-state solution leaves Israelis more secure, not less.”The fifth point of the blog noted that “under President Obama, the US has invested millions in helping Israeli immigrants.” It continued that “in the last 6 years, US humanitarian assistance to refugees and migrants travelling to Israel totaled $140 million.”The funds, the blog said, “is used to help transport eligible migrants to Israel, transitional shelter, intensive Hebrew-language programs that focus on newly-arriving immigrants, or youth programming in Israel.”The blog concluded with a curt instruction to “share this information with everyone who needs to know.” Aside from the fact-sheet, Obama will speak to Reuters for an on-camera interview on Monday, in which he is expected to address tensions with Netanyahu.Earlier Sunday, the administration signaled it would soften its stance toward the Israeli leader’s speech, with Kerry saying that Netanyahu was welcome to speak in the US and that the administration did not want the event “turned into some great political football.”Before speaking to Congress, Netanyahu will address the AIPAC conference on Monday.The annual confab launched Sunday with a record-breaking 16,000 activists in attendance and a legislative focus on two bills that seek increased congressional involvement in the nuclear talks underway between Iran and the major powers.Activists who visit Capitol Hill on Tuesday, the last day of the conference, will seek co-sponsorship for a bill that adds new sanctions on Iran should it walk away from the talks. Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu will reveal details from an emerging nuclear deal to “uninformed” US lawmakers during his controversial speech to Congress on Tuesday, a senior official traveling with him said early Monday, as Netanyahu landed near Washington.The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told reporters covering the prime minister’s trip that Israel knows more about the agreement with Iran than many members of Congress.“We know many details from the agreement being put together, details that we feel members of Congress are unaware of,” the official said, according to Haaretz. “According to the information we have, the deal currently taking shape will leave Iran with the capability to build a nuclear weapon, if Khamenei make a decision to do so.”The official said Netanyahu would reveal some details of the agreement during his speech before both houses of Congress on Tuesday, according to Ynet.“We are not here to offend President Obama whom we respect very much,” said a Netanyahu adviser, who was not authorized to be identified. “The prime minister is here to warn, in front of any stage possible, the dangers” of the deal that may be taking shape.A report late last month that the US was pursuing a deal with Iran that would freeze the ability to produce a nuclear weapons for 10 years before allowing it to ramp up enrichment activities was quickly denied by the White House and State Department.However, Israeli officials, including Netanyahu, have said the deal being put together is a bad one that will be dangerous for Israel and the Western world.The invitation to speak to Congress extended by House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, and Netanyahu’s acceptance have caused an uproar that has exposed tensions between Israel and the US, its most important ally.By consenting to speak, Netanyahu angered the White House, which was not consulted in advance, and Democrats, who were forced to choose between showing support for Israel and backing the president.“I will do everything in my ability to secure our future,” Netanyahu said before flying to Washington.
