Australia PM suggests MH370 search could be scaled back-AFP | Updated: March 05, 2015-astro awani

SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Thursday suggested the search for missing Flight MH370 may be scaled back, while expressing hope the jet would be found a year after it vanished. The Malaysia Airlines plane disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014 with 239 people on board. No trace has been found despite a massive surface and underwater hunt."I do reassure the families of our hope and expectation that the ongoing search will succeed," Abbott told parliament in Canberra."I can't promise that the search will go on at this intensity forever, but we will continue our very best efforts to resolve this mystery and provide some answers."His comments came as a group representing the families of MH370 passengers -- the majority of which were Chinese -- released a statement insisting that the search "must continue".Australia is leading the hunt in the Indian Ocean some 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) off its west coast, with four ships using sophisticated sonar systems to scour a huge underwater area. The vessels are focusing on a 60,000 square kilometre (23,000 square mile) priority zone, with the search scheduled to end in May. More than 40 percent of the ocean floor has been explored to date. The intensive search -- jointly funded by Australia and Malaysia with a budget of Aus$120 million (US$93 million) -- has so far only turned up a few shipping containers. The ships, Fugro Supporter, Fugro Equator, Fugro Discovery and GO Phoenix, are working in one of the world's most isolated locations in treacherous conditions similar to the "Roaring Forties" north of Antarctica -- notorious among mariners for its hostile seas.Weather conditions in the remote region are expected to worsen after May.The agency coordinating the search, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, has previously said a decision on continuing after the current hunt was completed was up to the Australian and Malaysian governments. The high stakes meant the ships' crews were highly focused, Fugro's MH370 search head Paul Kennedy said Thursday."It's a very expensive search. We want to make sure that when we run over (a possible debris field), we know we don't miss it by accident," he said. "Because we'll never go back there again. It's a one-shot deal."

'We are taking every step'

The families of some of the Australian victims were in parliament when Abbott made his statement, as was Malaysian High Commissioner Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Chinese ambassador Ma Zhaoxu and representatives of other nations that lost citizens. Many relatives were incensed when on January 29 Malaysia declared that all on board were presumed dead and that families should seek compensation.Next of kin fear the move means the Malaysian government and airline could declare the matter closed without any resolution. The MH370 passengers' families said in a statement on a Chinese messaging app Thursday that "the search must continue and all options explored if nothing is found in the coming weeks"." We do not accept (Malaysia's) proclamation and will not give up hope until we have definitive proof of a crash and a determination of location -- even if it is just one piece of the wreckage," they said.Abbott said the plane's disappearance "demonstrated a fundamental gap in tracking long-haul flights, particularly over the oceans"."I can't promise that the search will go on at this intensity forever, but we will continue our very best efforts to resolve this mystery and provide some answers."- Tony Abbot-Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia plan to trial a "world first" system that increases the tracking of aircraft over remote oceans to a minimum rate of every 15 minutes from current intervals of 30 to 40 minutes."While it is not a complete answer, it will deliver immediate improvements in the way we track aircraft while more comprehensive solutions are developed and implemented," Abbott said of the system, announced Sunday."We must ensure that no families will ever again have to endure the suffering of the families of the MH370 passengers." Australia last week also said it was developing a "world first" joint civilian-military air traffic control system that could help track MH370-type incidents "more quickly and more precisely".

Delta plane slides off runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport-Reuters-By Laila Kearney-mar 5,15-yahoonews

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Delta Air Lines Inc jet landing during a snowstorm at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Thursday slid off the runway and struck a fence before coming to rest on a snow-covered embankment just feet from the frigid waters of Flushing Bay.None of the 127 passengers and five crew members were seriously injured as Delta flight 1086 from Atlanta skidded on the tarmac at about 11 a.m. EST (1600 GMT). Images on local media showed the plane's nose had pushed through a chain-link fence and was jutting out over an embankment.LaGuardia, the smallest of the New York area's three major airports, was immediately closed after the mishap. By the time its runways started to reopen at about 2:30 p.m. EST, air traffic was snarled throughout the U.S. East Coast and beyond. Hundreds of flights were canceled at LaGuardia, compounding weather-related travel disruptions in many parts of the country."I think the pilot did everything he could to slow the aircraft down," said Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the airport's operator. "Obviously, the pilot's and the co-pilot's good efforts were reflected in the fact that there were only minor injuries."After exit slides failed to deploy properly, passengers were forced to disembark by climbing over a wing with the help of emergency responders, Foye said at a news conference. There were only two minor injuries reported, he said, though that number may change. One of those on board was Larry Donnell, a professional football player with the New York Giants."We were all shocked and alarmed when the plane started to skid, but most importantly, as far as I know, all of the passengers and flight crew were able to exit the plane safely," the tight end said in a statement released by the team.

"GOOD BRAKING ACTION"

Even though the aircraft landed in a driving snowstorm, Foye said two aircraft that touched down minutes before the incident had reported "good braking action."Officials did not make any statement about a possible cause, and experts from the National Transportation Safety Board were en route to the airport to begin an investigation. A spokesman for the NTSB declined further comment.Delta, which operates a hub at LaGuardia, said in a statement that it would work with all authorities to look into what happened. Its shares were down 1.9 percent at $44.28 in Thursday afternoon trading. The airline said it had taken delivery of the MD-88 involved in the incident in 1987, and that it last had a major maintenance overhaul in December 2010. The plane had a routine service check on Tuesday, it said, but declined further comment.LaGuardia Airport, located in the New York City borough of Queens, has in recent history been the scene of two previous crashes involving wintry weather. On March 2, 1994, Continental Airlines flight 705 bound for Denver aborted takeoff during a snowstorm and slid off the runway into a ditch, injuring 29 people. Two years earlier, USAir Flight 405 headed for Cleveland crashed into Flushing Bay during a snowy takeoff at LaGuardia, killing 27 people of the 51 on board. The crash was later blamed on icing on its wings.(Additional reporting by Ellen Wulfhorst and Jeffrey Dastin; Writing by Frank McGurty; Editing by Doina Chiacu, Bill Trott, G Crosse and Lisa Shumaker)
