Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. The Chief of the Northern Command, Major General Yair Golan, met last month with the mayors of communities near Lebanon and addressed concerns from residents that Hezbollah is actively digging tunnels toward Israel.Golan said that the IDF is prepared to deal with any attempt to act against the inhabitants of the region, including against Hezbollah. However, no security protocols have been enacted yet to actively combat the problem.But despite statements by military leaders, sources say that, quietly, the IDF acknowledges a very real threat from terror tunnels in southern Lebanon and has not ruled out the possibility of their existence, Arutz Sheva learned Wednesday.Reservists who have recently arrived to serve the Lebanese border told Arutz Sheva that their own IDF officers have great concern for the presence of tunnels from Lebanon to Israel, and that instructions were given along the northern borders to dig to search for such tunnels.The IDF decided to contact the local military outpost on the Lebanese border as well, due to high fears of the presence of a tunnel just below the military post and that Hezbollah terrorists could decide to blow up the tunnel, causing mass casualties.Soldiers also stated that Hezbollah terrorists have come very close to Israel's borders before, during infiltration attempts, and that "they know everything they need to know" to launch an attack. IDF rejected the claims and said that "the IDF does not specify about preparations on the border." Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel is to supply Jordan with natural gas from its vast Leviathan offshore gas field over a period of 15 years, US giant Noble Energy announced Wednesday.A source close to the deal said it was worth $15 billion (11.4 billion euros) -- a significant chunk of some $60 billion which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said will come from Israel's offshore gas exports.Noble announced in a statement the "execution of a non-binding letter of intent to supply natural gas from the Leviathan field, offshore Israel , to the National Electric Power Company Ltd (NEPCO) of Jordan.""Noble Energy and the Leviathan partners will supply a base gross quantity of 1.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from the Leviathan field over a 15-year term," it said.Leviathan is majority-owned by three Israeli companies, with 40 percent owned by Noble.A source close to the deal, who asked to remain anonymous, said it was worth some $15 billion, and hailed the deal as "important for Israel geopolitically to establish our relationship with Jordan and other Arab countries."Export plans for the eastern Mediterranean have been taking shape over the past five years since Noble discovered the Leviathan field in Israeli waters.The Leviathan field's size is estimated at 18.9 trillion cubic feet (535 billion cubic metres) of natural gas, along with 34.1 million barrels of condensate, and has been hailed as the largest gas deposit found in the world in a decade.Netanyahu has said exports from Leviathan and another field, Tamar, would bring in some $60 billion to state coffers over the next 20 years.Israel's natural gas finds are expected to sharply reduce its dependence on imports.

Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas
Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

The Chief of the Northern Command, Major General Yair Golan, met last month with the mayors of communities near Lebanon and addressed concerns from residents that Hezbollah is actively digging tunnels toward Israel.Golan said that the IDF is prepared to deal with any attempt to act against the inhabitants of the region, including against Hezbollah. However, no security protocols have been enacted yet to actively combat the problem.But despite statements by military leaders, sources say that, quietly, the IDF acknowledges a very real threat from terror tunnels in southern Lebanon and has not ruled out the possibility of their existence, Arutz Sheva learned Wednesday.Reservists who have recently arrived to serve the Lebanese border told Arutz Sheva that their own IDF officers have great concern for the presence of tunnels from Lebanon to Israel, and that instructions were given along the northern borders to dig to search for such tunnels.The IDF decided to contact the local military outpost on the Lebanese border as well, due to high fears of the presence of a tunnel just below the military post and that Hezbollah terrorists could decide to blow up the tunnel, causing mass casualties.Soldiers also stated that Hezbollah terrorists have come very close to Israel's borders before, during infiltration attempts, and that "they know everything they need to know" to launch an attack. IDF rejected the claims and said that "the IDF does not specify about preparations on the border." The concerns are made particularly real given the IDF's controversial decision earlier this year to remove guards posted near several Gaza belt communities over budget cuts, a decision made the more alarming given the extensive terror tunnel system exposed in Operation Protective Edge which resulted in numerous IDF casualties.Those tunnels were revealed in reports to have been planned for use in a massive incursion on Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, during which the Hamas terror group planned to commit a large-scale massacre of Israelis living in communities near Gaza.Geologist and res. Col. Yossi Langotsky last month told Arutz Sheva that he had tried to warn the security establishment about the tunnel threat from Gaza for nine years, but that his warnings fell on deaf ears.Langotsky indicated that a similar threat exists on the Lebanese border. UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. peacekeeping chief strongly denied on Wednesday allegations from the Philippines' army chief that Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights were ordered to surrender their weapons to Islamist militants who had trapped them.Filipino army chief General Gregorio Catapang said his soldiers had defended themselves against Islamist rebels last weekend in defiance of an order from their U.N. force commander to surrender their weapons, a move that would be highly controversial in the six-nation, blue-helmeted force.The U.N.'s under-secretary-general for peacekeeping, Herve Ladsous, denied that any such order was given.The back-and-forth underlines a rise in tensions in the U.N. peace keeping force following weekend skirmishes with Islamist militants in Israeli-controlled territory on Syria's southeastern border.Islamist fighters battling the Syrian army overran last week a crossing point in the line that has separated Israelis from Syrians in the Golan Heights since a 1973 war, the most recent escalation of Syria's civil war, now in its fourth year.The fighters then turned against U.N. blue helmets from a peace keeping force that has patrolled the ceasefire line since 1974. After 45 Fijians were captured on Thursday, 72 Filipinos were besieged at two other locations for two days by militants before they escaped.The militants, believed to be part of an al-Qaeda-linked group known as Nusra Front, are still holding the 45 Fijian members of the United Nations' UNDOF Golan Heights force.Catapang said that at one point while the Filipinos were trapped, UNDOF Force Commander General Iqbal Singh Singha of India ordered the soldiers to surrender their arms to prevent harm from befalling the captured Fijians.Asked what order was given to the Filipinos, Ladsous replied, "Never to hand over weapons."The order was simply "not to shoot," he said.One U.N. official told Reuters that no force commander would order his troops to hand over weapons to rebels. Israel to supply offshore gas to Jordan in new deal-AFP-SEPT 3,14-YAHOONEWS
Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel is to supply Jordan with natural gas from its vast Leviathan offshore gas field over a period of 15 years, US giant Noble Energy announced Wednesday.A source close to the deal said it was worth $15 billion (11.4 billion euros) -- a significant chunk of some $60 billion which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said will come from Israel's offshore gas exports.Noble announced in a statement the "execution of a non-binding letter of intent to supply natural gas from the Leviathan field, offshore Israel , to the National Electric Power Company Ltd (NEPCO) of Jordan.""Noble Energy and the Leviathan partners will supply a base gross quantity of 1.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from the Leviathan field over a 15-year term," it said.Leviathan is majority-owned by three Israeli companies, with 40 percent owned by Noble.A source close to the deal, who asked to remain anonymous, said it was worth some $15 billion, and hailed the deal as "important for Israel geopolitically to establish our relationship with Jordan and other Arab countries."Export plans for the eastern Mediterranean have been taking shape over the past five years since Noble discovered the Leviathan field in Israeli waters.The Leviathan field's size is estimated at 18.9 trillion cubic feet (535 billion cubic metres) of natural gas, along with 34.1 million barrels of condensate, and has been hailed as the largest gas deposit found in the world in a decade.Netanyahu has said exports from Leviathan and another field, Tamar, would bring in some $60 billion to state coffers over the next 20 years.Israel's natural gas finds are expected to sharply reduce its dependence on imports.
