Prostitution bill targets johns and pimps, rather than prostitutes-By Susana Mas, CBC News Posted: Jun 04, 2014 2:39 PM ET Last Updated: Jun 04, 2014 4:33 PM ET-Peter McKay on prostitution bill LIVE

The federal government has tabled proposed prostitution legislation that would target johns and the pimps who sell and profit from prostitution, rather than the prostitutes themselves."The bill recognizes that the vast majority of those who sell sexual services do not do so by choice. We view the vast majority of those involved in selling sexual services as victims," MacKay said. The bill, dubbed the protection of communities and exploited persons act, would put a heavy emphasis on fines for those who purchase sexual services in public places."No model that involves full decriminalization or legalization will ever make prostitution a safe endeavour, MacKay said.MacKay held a news conference on the bill shortly after it was tabled in the House of Commons. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is also expected to hold a news conference to give his party's views on the proposed legislation.
