A Divine Word Missionary, 56 year-old Kikuchi is the bishop of Niigata and the president of the Japanese Caritas agency, which has assumed an increasing role and prestige in the country of the Rising Sun thanks to its efforts during the last three years after the earthquake, tsunami and disaster at the Fukushima power plant. Approximately 267 thousand people are living in temporary shelters in the affected areas, and Caritas continues its laudable work of aid, rehabilitation of displaced persons and reconstruction, and has just announced that its support will continue for another three years.On the eve of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's arrival at the Vatican, in an exclusive conversation with Vatican Insider bishop Kikuchi intervenes in the ongoing countrywide debate in the aftermath of the nuclear disaster which, three years from that fateful March 11th, 2011, has once again returned to centre stage. The list is getting longer and the limited quota means a pilgrim has to wait 50 years for his turn to arrive."I consider this as a big challenge. Rome-"We are asking prime minister Shinzo Abe to abandon the way of nuclear energy. But in order to really choose an alternative route to renewable energy our people must be ready to change their lifestyle. Otherwise it is just hypocrisy". The Japanese bishop Isao Kikuchi touches upon a very sensitive point and denounces the risk of a purely ideological approach to the nuclear issue. A Divine Word Missionary, 56 year-old Kikuchi is the bishop of Niigata and the president of the Japanese Caritas agency, which has assumed an increasing role and prestige in the country of the Rising Sun thanks to its efforts during the last three years after the earthquake, tsunami and disaster at the Fukushima power plant. Approximately 267 thousand people are living in temporary shelters in the affected areas, and Caritas continues its laudable work of aid, rehabilitation of displaced persons and reconstruction, and has just announced that its support will continue for another three years.On the eve of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's arrival at the Vatican, in an exclusive conversation with Vatican Insider bishop Kikuchi intervenes in the ongoing countrywide debate in the aftermath of the nuclear disaster which, three years from that fateful March 11th, 2011, has once again returned to centre stage. Also on account of the about-face by the Tokyo-based government; on the emotional wave of the damage caused by the Daiichi plant, the executive branch –then led by Naoto Kan– publicly announced the abandonment of nuclear energy and the launch of a plan for the conversion to renewable energy sources. A year and a half after his rise to power, his successor Abe has clarified the vague promise of "rethinking the national energy policy in the post-Fukushima era". In the new Basic Energy Plan, presented in February 2014, nuclear power is defined as "an important source of electricity" also for the long term, and the reactivation of a dozen of the 50 nuclear reactors still shut down for upcoming renovations is planned.Already in November 2011 the Japanese Bishops officially asked for "the immediate abolishment of all the [nuclear] power plants in Japan" and to "invest in alternative energy sources". Today, faced with the blatant reversal and the nuclear choice of the Abe government, they confirm their position, without hiding perplexity and dissent. "The national debate was serious and in depth", recalls Kikuchi, "and it involved all segments of society. The Christian Bishops and the leaders of other religious communities expressed strong support in the choice of alternative energy sources, to protect humans and the environment. Promoting renewable energy sources is the only choice we have and it is the only responsible path to follow for the good of new generations in Japan". Furthermore, "this idea", he explains, "must go hand in hand with the reform of our lifestyle" in order to not remain a mere declaration of principle. "If we continue to maintain the current lifestyle, with a very high energy consumption, the promotion of alternative energy sources seems to me quite hypocritical. Each person must be truly willing to give up something for the common good of humans, their children and of all of God's creatures".And while the prefecture of Fukushima, an area that is still grappling with the consequences of the nuclear accident, intends to switch to a power supply completely based on renewable energy by 2040 –a choice that is currently contrary to the government's agenda– the bishop does not hide the real problems that can only be addressed with a clear political will: "The idea is good. However, when going in depth with the choice of alternative energy solutions it is still fundamentally important to figure out what to do with the nuclear waste that has accumulated over the years. Do we want to leave this problem to posterity, while we continue to enjoy the comfort of a life that is concerned only with the prosperity of the present? This question touches us deep inside". Therefore, today the entire nation of Japan is "called to a deep examination of conscience to make crucial choices for its future". "Even among the Catholic communities –asserts the bishop– some seem to appreciate the government's decision because they think that it would allow them to maintain their current lifestyle; they are afraid of losing something".But, according to Kikuchi, you just need to look at the hundreds of Catholic and non-Catholic volunteers engaged with Caritas today in the area of Sendai, the most affected by the 2011 earthquake, to understand what the right choice is: "The Catholic Church in Japan wants to walk beside the victims of the tragedy of three years ago, until they return to a normal life. Many of them still live in precarious conditions. Others suffer from anxiety or depression and seem to have lost hope. We are trying to accompany them on their life journey, so that they can regain trust and hope in the future. This is the path of mercy".

The decision will be made official most likely tomorrow, after the meeting of the synod during which the patriarch will present the initiative.It was Pope Francis who invited Bartholomew during the meeting held at the Greek-orthodox Patriarchate on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The patriarch of Constantinople had accepted the invitation, though reserving the right to respond.The presence of the Successor of the Apostle next to the Successor of the Apostle Peter, on the occasion of the arrival of the Israeli and Palestinian presidents at the Vatican, is an important sign of the commitment of Christians for Peace in the Holy Land. It testifies that the “Sister” Churches intend to continue along this path undertaken in Jerusalem.As we recall, the meeting to pray for peace, in the initial intention of Francis, was to be held during the three-day pilgrimage, but political and organizational problems prevented it. For this Sunday, May 25th, from Bethlehem, the Pope announced the initiative after obtaining the approval of Abu Mazen and Shimon Peres.Even Bartholomew, during his stay in Israel and Palestine met the two presidents who will be in the Pope's home on the day of Pentecost. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will plead for additional haj quota from the Saudi Arabian government to allow more Muslims to perform the pligrimage this year.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the reduction in quota last year led to higher number of Tabung Haji (TH) depositors and a longer queue for Muslims wanting to perform the Haj.He said until May, a total of 1.5 million Muslims had registered to perform Haj via TH with a large number comprising young people and children."The economy of Muslims in this country has improved and with it comes high awareness to perform Haj. The list is getting longer and the limited quota means a pilgrim has to wait 50 years for his turn to arrive."I consider this as a big challenge. I will personally plead with the Saudi government for additional haj quota," he said at the launch of Kad Tabung Haji Debit-i Mastercard and Tabung Haji Coffee Table Book, here today.Since 2009, the Saudi government had allocated 27,900 places per year for Malaysians to perform Haj but declined by 20 percent last year due to expansion work at Masjidil Haram."As such, the new Haj quota for Malaysia last year was 22,320."TH will maintain the Haj fee at RM9,980 this year involving total cost of more than RM130 million.Najib said the actual cost for each pilgrim to perform the haj is about RM16,000."If calculated in terms of subsidy, it is the highest subsidy rate ever given to each individual in this country," he added.Kad Tabung Haji Debit Card-i Mastercard provides depositors with 24-hour facilities to make transactions and purchases at over 38 million business locations worldwide.At the event, Najib also launched the TH Coffee Table Book documenting significant events during 50 years of its establishment.TH's book was published in collaboration with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, TH chairman Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim and TH CEO Datuk Ismee Ismail.
