WALKERTON — A major fire destroyed a popular sports bar yesterday and blanketed Walkerton's downtown core in smoke.Crowds gathered to watch as flames ripped through the building housing Rob's Sports Bar on Scott St. The fire call came in at about 12:30 p.m.Firefighters from Walkerton, Paisley, Mildmay, Elmwood and Kincardine were brought in to fight the blaze.Police said no injuries were reported at the scene, but the building was destroyed.Several downtown streets were closed as crews worked to douse the flames in the three-storey brick building, which stands at the corner of Scott and Jackson streets, across from the landmark Victoria Jubilee Hall.South Bruce OPP is investigating the fire along with the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Both Britain and Turkey said on Monday that it would be possible to
respond to the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime, even
without the unanimous backing of the United Nations Security Council.
‘So, is it possible to act on chemical weapons, is it possible to respond to chemical weapons without complete unity on the UN Security Council?", asked rhetorically British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "I would argue, yes it is. Otherwise, of course, it might be impossible to respond to such outrages, such crimes and I don’t think that is an acceptable situation."It is possible to take action based on great humanitarian need and humanitarian distress, it’s possible to do that under many different scenarios,” Hague said in an interview for BBC radio. “I’ve pointed that out in Parliament over recent months before, but again, anything we propose to do on this, the strong response that we’ve talked about, whatever form that takes, will be subject to legal advice, must be in accordance with international law so I can be very clear about that."
Hague refused to “rule anything in or out” regarding the various methods of action than can be used. As for consulting Parliament, the Foreign Secretary was also vague:“That will depend on the timing and nature of what we propose to do,” he explained. “We have a good record on consulting Parliament, having a vote in Parliament if we decide to take any military action and, of course, we’re conscious of the views of Parliament on these matters and the need to be consulted, so we’re very conscious of that but our decisions on that will depend on the timing and nature of what we propose to do.”Turkey also said it would join any international coalition against Syria even if a wider consensus on action cannot be reached at the UN Security Council.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted by the newspaper Milliyet as saying on Monday: “We always prioritize acting together with the international community, with United Nations decisions. If such a decision doesn’t emerge from the UN Security Council, other alternatives ... would come onto the agenda.”
“Currently 36-37 countries are discussing these alternatives. If a coalition is formed against Syria in this process, Turkey would take its place in this coalition,” he said.

As tensions in Syria rise to unprecedented heights, Israelis, fearful
of a possible chemical attack by its northern neighbor, have been
flocking to gas mask distribution stations. Distribution of updated
masks and chemical protection kits have been going on for several years,
but on Sunday hordes of Israelis who have neglected to get their
updated kits flocked to post offices, which are responsible for the
distribution.According to the Israel Post Office, requests for kits were quadruple those of a regular Sunday.
Israelis have also been cleaning out safe rooms and neighborhood bomb shelters, most of which serve older neighborhoods where houses were built without safe rooms. In many neighborhoods, the shelters have long been used for community activities, to run after-school programs, or as synagogues. In a recent campaign, the Homefront Security Ministry has been checking the status of shelters and found many of them to be wanting.Israel, meanwhile, has called for international action to halt the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons. Speaking Sunday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that Israel “expects this to end. The most dangerous regimes on earth must not have the most dangerous weapons on earth.”Speaking with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius Sunday morning, President Shimon Peres said that “Syria has a ruler who kills people with no compunction, and in a horrible manner. No one can ignore the deaths of children. This is the time for an international effort to remove chemical weapons from Syria. We will not allow those weapons to remain there, not in the hands of Bashar al-Assad, or anyone else,” Peres said.

Walkerton sports bar destroyed by fire
WALKERTON — A major fire destroyed a popular sports bar yesterday and blanketed Walkerton's downtown core in smoke.Crowds gathered to watch as flames ripped through the building housing Rob's Sports Bar on Scott St. The fire call came in at about 12:30 p.m.Firefighters from Walkerton, Paisley, Mildmay, Elmwood and Kincardine were brought in to fight the blaze.Police said no injuries were reported at the scene, but the building was destroyed.Several downtown streets were closed as crews worked to douse the flames in the three-storey brick building, which stands at the corner of Scott and Jackson streets, across from the landmark Victoria Jubilee Hall.South Bruce OPP is investigating the fire along with the Office of the Fire Marshal.

A massive wildfire racing through the Yosemite wilderness --
fueled by high winds -- is threatening San Francisco's fresh water and
power supply as well as California's famous giant sequoias.It's one of several fires statewide being fought by more than 8,000
firefighters across nearly 400 square miles. The fire has consumed
approximately 225 square miles of picturesque forests. Officials
estimate containment at just 7 percent."This fire has continued to pose every challenge that there can be
[in] a fire: inaccessible terrain, strong winds, dry conditions," Daniel
Berlant of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
said on Sunday. The fire continues burning in the remote wilderness area of Yosemite,
but park spokesman Tom Medena told the Associated Press it's edging
closer to the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, the source of 85 percent of San
Francisco's famously pure drinking water, as well as power for a number
of key city buildings, including the airport. The city has issued
assurances that the water quality remains good, but the San Francisco
Public Utilities Commission has shut two hydro-electric stations fed by
water from the reservoir and cut power to more than 12 miles of lines.
The city has been buying $600,000 worth of power on the open market to
ensure San Francisco doesn't go dark. Meanwhile, park officials are clearing brush and setting sprinklers
to protect two groves of giant sequoias. The iconic trees can resist
fire, but dry conditions and heavy brush are forcing extra precautions
to be taken in the Tuolumne and Merced groves. About three dozen of the
giant trees are affected."All of the plants and trees in Yosemite are important, but the giant
sequoias are incredibly important both for what they are and as symbols
of the National Park System," park spokesman Scott Gediman told the
Associated Press on Saturday.The trees grow naturally only on the western slopes of the Sierra
Nevada and are among the largest and oldest living things on earth.
The Tuolumne and Merced groves are in the north end of the park near Crane Flat. While the Rim Fire is still some distance away, park employees and trail crews are not taking any chances.Fire officials are using bulldozers to clear contingency lines on the Rim Fire's north side to protect the towns of Tuolumne City, Ponderosa Hills and Twain Hart. Tropical Storm Fernand brewed up just off Mexico's Gulf coast
Sunday, and heavy rains and strong winds caused some power failures and
street flooding in the colonial city of Veracruz. The storm was expected
to move ashore before dawn Monday.The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm had winds
of at least 50 miles per hour late Sunday. Fernand was about five miles
north of Veracruz and moving westward at 9 miles per hour.A tropical storm warning was in effect on Mexico's coast from Veracruz north to Barra de Nautla.The government of Veracruz state advised its 7.7 million residents to
stay home, and Gov. Javier Duarte suspended classes in the whole state
to protect children from venturing out into winds and rain.

Britain, Turkey: Syria Intervention Possible without UN

‘So, is it possible to act on chemical weapons, is it possible to respond to chemical weapons without complete unity on the UN Security Council?", asked rhetorically British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "I would argue, yes it is. Otherwise, of course, it might be impossible to respond to such outrages, such crimes and I don’t think that is an acceptable situation."It is possible to take action based on great humanitarian need and humanitarian distress, it’s possible to do that under many different scenarios,” Hague said in an interview for BBC radio. “I’ve pointed that out in Parliament over recent months before, but again, anything we propose to do on this, the strong response that we’ve talked about, whatever form that takes, will be subject to legal advice, must be in accordance with international law so I can be very clear about that."
Hague refused to “rule anything in or out” regarding the various methods of action than can be used. As for consulting Parliament, the Foreign Secretary was also vague:“That will depend on the timing and nature of what we propose to do,” he explained. “We have a good record on consulting Parliament, having a vote in Parliament if we decide to take any military action and, of course, we’re conscious of the views of Parliament on these matters and the need to be consulted, so we’re very conscious of that but our decisions on that will depend on the timing and nature of what we propose to do.”Turkey also said it would join any international coalition against Syria even if a wider consensus on action cannot be reached at the UN Security Council.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted by the newspaper Milliyet as saying on Monday: “We always prioritize acting together with the international community, with United Nations decisions. If such a decision doesn’t emerge from the UN Security Council, other alternatives ... would come onto the agenda.”
“Currently 36-37 countries are discussing these alternatives. If a coalition is formed against Syria in this process, Turkey would take its place in this coalition,” he said.

Russia warns against military intervention in Syria

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow had no plans to be drawn
into a military conflict over the civil war in Syria and that Washington
and its allies would be repeating "past mistakes" if they intervened in

Israelis have also been cleaning out safe rooms and neighborhood bomb shelters, most of which serve older neighborhoods where houses were built without safe rooms. In many neighborhoods, the shelters have long been used for community activities, to run after-school programs, or as synagogues. In a recent campaign, the Homefront Security Ministry has been checking the status of shelters and found many of them to be wanting.Israel, meanwhile, has called for international action to halt the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons. Speaking Sunday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that Israel “expects this to end. The most dangerous regimes on earth must not have the most dangerous weapons on earth.”Speaking with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius Sunday morning, President Shimon Peres said that “Syria has a ruler who kills people with no compunction, and in a horrible manner. No one can ignore the deaths of children. This is the time for an international effort to remove chemical weapons from Syria. We will not allow those weapons to remain there, not in the hands of Bashar al-Assad, or anyone else,” Peres said.
