Anti-gay clipping upsets Bancroft restaurant-goers

BANCROFT, Ont. — A newspaper clipping of an anti-gay protest that’s been posted on the wall of a small-town restaurant for 10 years has become the catalyst for a battle between the area’s gay community and the restaurant owners.Featuring the words “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”, the clipping has been pinned to the wall of the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant and Bakery in Bancroft, Ont., for a decade,But the trouble only started on Aug. 11, when Nat Brouse and her wife Steph Murphy, new to the area, went to the restaurant for the first time.“The sign caught my eye almost as soon as we sat down,” said Brouse.“At first we were shocked that such an overt sign of hatred was just hanging out in the open to intimidate the queer community.”Co-owners of the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant Sadie and Doug Creighton say the newspaper clipping was not intended to offend anyone and claim to have no ill-will towards the gay community.“Let them keep to themselves,” Sadie said.But others say the Creighton’s reaction shows differently.Gay local business owner/musician and filmmaker Suzy Richter went to see the clipping for herself when one of the owners told her to get out of the restaurant. When Richter asked why, she says that the one owner responded: “Because I want you out of my restaurant.”Asking why again Richter said the owner responded: “Are you looking for Adam and Steve?” She says she was taunted before leaving.
Richter described the overall experience as frightening and confusing.The Creightons say they have the right to their own beliefs and that they should be able to post whatever they choose on their walls whether it offends people or not.“It’s in the Bible,” said Sadie.“Our ancestors would be rolling over in their graves if they knew half of what was going on.”NDP candidate for Prince Edward-Hastings County Sherry Hayes and her daughter Mikaela started a conversation on Facebook where eventually plans began to form for a sit-in at the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant to have the clipping removed.When word of the protest reached the Creightons, they reluctantly took the clipping down.“If you are offended about something you go home and you deal with it. You don’t make a big to-do out of something,” said Sadie.

The outgoing Homeland Security Secretary has a warning for her successor: A massive and “serious” cyber attack on the U.S. homeland is coming, and a natural disaster — the likes of which the nation has never seen — is also likely on its way.So prepare, and bring “a large bottle of Advil,” Janet Napolitano told her yet-to-be-named replacement in a farewell address Tuesday morning.“Many things still need tending, and my successor will most certainly have a full plate on his or her hands,” said Napolitano, who leaves her post next week after more than four years at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security.Napolitano said she faced “many challenges” during her tenure at DHS, from the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009 to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.DHS — backed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal departments and agencies — led the federal government’s response to such disasters.During Napolitano’s tenure, her department managed 325 federally declared disasters, and issued more than 60 emergency declarations, she said at the National Press Club in Washington this morning.Leading a department created in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks meant Napolitano has also been at the forefront of the nation’s counterterrorism and border enforcement efforts.
After the failed Christmas Day “underwear bombing” attempt in 2009, Napolitano launched a worldwide and “historic” effort — in 190 countries — to enhance passenger screening and counter the threat of “nonmetallic devices” on aircraft, she said.Transportation Security Administration officers are stationed at airports around the world.“The lesson is clear: For every attack we experience, every threat we face and every piece of intelligence we come across, we learn,” she said. ”And we get stronger and more nimble.”
During her farewell address, Napolitano, who was governor of Arizona before becoming DHS secretary, touted her department’s work on border security and immigration reform.“Over the past four and a half years, we have invested historic resources to prevent illegal cross-border activity,” she said. “Our borders are now better staffed and better protected than at any time in our nation’s history, and illegal crossings have dropped to near-40-year-lows.”Napolitano also took a shot at Congress, saying that despite her department’s work to “set commonsense immigration enforcement priorities, with a focus on criminals, national security and public safety threats,” some lawmakers thwarted administration efforts to codify those priorities into law.“Congress had a chance to give these so-called Dreamers a way to stay in our country through the Dream Act, but unfortunately, that legislation failed to garner the 60 votes needed for cloture, falling just five votes short, despite strong bipartisan support,” Napolitano said.So last year, Napolitano used her “prosecutorial discretion” to let “young people who meet the strict criteria” temporarily stay in the United States for two years, she said, adding that 430,000 people have already been granted the “deferred action.”
At the end of her address Tuesday, Napolitano offered an “Open Letter to My Successor.”Among her pieces of advice: “You will need to forge strong relationships with all of our partners, including Congress, to make sure DHS has the resources it needs to meet our responsibilities to the American people. …
“You also will have to prepare for the increasing likelihood of more weather-related events of a more severe nature as a result of climate change, and continue to build the capacity to respond to potential disasters in far-flung regions of the country occurring at the same time.“You will need a large bottle of Advil,” Napolitano joked.Still, she said, running DHS is “one of the most rewarding jobs there is.”“What you do here matters to the lives of people all across our great nation, and your decisions affect them in direct, tangible ways,” she said. “You make sure their families are safe from terrorist threats, that their local first responders have equipment and training and funding, and that when disaster strikes, people who have lost everything are given food, shelter and hope.”Napolitano surprised many inside Washington when she announced in July that she would be stepping down from her post to become the next president of the University of California system. Beltway rumors suggested Napolitano, a former U.S. attorney in Arizona, was interested in replacing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, but he has yet to announce any plans to leave the administration.Napolitano’s departure compounds what the Republican head of the House Homeland Security Committee called a “growing list of unfilled key leadership positions” at DHS, including the posts of deputy secretary, intelligence office chief, U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner and Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement director.The head of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency has been nominated to become the deputy secretary, potentially setting up another vacancy.Rand Beers, the current undersecretary for National Protection and Programs, will serve as acting DHS secretary until a replacement for Napolitano is confirmed by the U.S. Senate.Napolitano’s last day at DHS is Sept. 6.

Oklahoma town warned off tap water after blood worms discovered

Colcord, Okla., residents were warned earlier this week to keep away from their tap water after health and safety authorities discovered blood worms in the water supply.The small, red insect larvae that grow to a half-inch in length have appeared in water glasses throughout the town, CNN said. The larvae can’t be filtered, and residents are instead were being told to use bottled water only. That meant no cooking, drinking or brushing of teeth with the tap water, authorities said.The warning shut down schools as officials tried to determine the source of the larvae — and how to get rid of them. And it’s also left restaurants and diners scrambling.Workers with CJ’s Country Corner said to KJRH that business was slow and they couldn’t serve even coffee or fountain soda.Health impacts from the worms are undetermined. But authorities were’t taking any chances and sent out teams to hand-deliver warning letters to all 800 of the town residents.A spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality said that the agency was investigating and that it has only seen one prior infestation, more than 20 years ago and 108 miles from Colcord.The Associated Press reported that a spokesman said the city had turned the water back on Wednesday after cleaning and draining the water tower. But other media outlets are reporting that residents still are being advised to avoid the tap and keep to the bottled. Meanwhile, there’s still no word on how the worms got into the water supply.

Why is Blood Falls in Antarctica Blood Red?

Blood Falls is an interesting feature of the Taylor Glacier in Antarctica. It is in the McMurdo Dry Valleys at the edge of the glacier. It pours out of Taylor Glacier and into Lake Bonney. What is so interesting about Blood Falls is its color. You guessed it. It is blood red. The coloration of the falls is odd considering its surroundings. There is virtually nothing else in the area that matches its color. The glaciers and lakes are your typical blues and whites and the valleys are brown where the wind has swept away the snow.

Scientists, researchers and explorers have been pondering the possible causes of the coloration of Blood Falls for some time now. Early on, they thought that the color may come from algae. However, algae have never been known to be able to survive below a glacier and Blood Falls' source is beneath the Taylor Glacier. Then there is the fact that the water is very salty. In other words, it is sea water. This only added to the mystery. What is blood red sea water doing pouring out of a glacier in Antarctica? Several theories have come up in the last decades and one of them may just contain the answer to this intriguing question.
Barry Lyons of Ohio State University and a team of scientists did a decade long study of Blood Falls. At the studies conclusion, Barry's answer to the mystery of Blood Falls was that part of Taylor Valley was once covered with a saltwater lake that had come in from Ross Sea. The iron in the water had settled to the bottom of the lake and was later picked up by the Taylor Glacier. Now the salty, iron-rich water is pouring out of the edge of the glacier. This next theory is based on basically the same principle, but it goes even further with the addition of something that may be even more interesting than the falls themselves.
In early 2009, Jill Mukucki from Dartmouth's Department of Earth Studies released a paper regarding her research, and that of her colleagues, on Blood Falls. In this paper, Jill basically agrees with Barry Lyons about the source of the salt water beneath Taylor Glacier. However, the paper's explanation of the color is largely different. Jill and her colleagues discovered microbes that live roughly 1,300 feet inside of the glacier. These microbes supposedly feed on the iron in the sea water under Taylor Glacier. By feeding on the iron, they help to break it down, which gives Blood Falls its red coloring.These microbes may have had ancestors that were ocean life. They have apparently adapted to the lack of light (and many other things) within the glacier. They have utilized the only real resource in Taylor Glacier-the iron-and turned it into food. This is the first indication scientists have ever seen that life can exist beneath a glacier, a glacier in Antarctica, no less. And to think, these little mysterious microbes may be the answer to the mystery of Blood Falls.

GROVELAND, Calif. — Firefighters battling the giant wildfire burning in the Sierra Nevada added a California National Guard Predator drone to their arsenal Wednesday to give them almost immediate views of any portion of the flames chewing through rugged forests in and around Yosemite National Park.
The MQ-1 unmanned aircraft being remotely piloted hundreds of miles away quickly alerted fire bosses to a new flare-up they otherwise wouldn't have immediately seen."They're piping what they're seeing directly to the incident commander, and he's seeing it in real time over a computer network," said National Guard Lt. Col. Tom Keegan.Previously, ground commanders relied on helicopters that needed to refuel every two hours.The 12-day-old Rim Fire continued to grow, expanding to 301 square miles. But crews building lines around the flames made significant progress, and containment jumped to 30 percent. Cooler temperatures and lighter winds are aiding firefighters.Increasingly confident fire officials said they expect to fully surround the blaze in three weeks, although it will burn for much longer than that."We continue to get line around this fire," California fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said Wednesday. "It's not nearly as active as it was last week."

While unmanned aircraft have mapped past fires, use of the Predator will be the longest sustained mission by a drone in California to broadcast information to firefighters in real time.The plane, the size of a small Cessna, will remain over the burn zone for up to 22 hours at a time, allowing fire commanders to monitor fire activity, determine the fire's direction of movement, the extent of containment and confirm new fires ignited by lightning or flying embers.The drone is being flown by the 163rd Wing of the California National Guard at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside and is operating from Victorville Airport, both in Southern California. It generally flew over unpopulated areas on its 300-mile flight to the Rim Fire. Outside the fire area, it will be escorted by a manned aircraft.Officials were careful to point out the images are being used only to aid in the effort to contain the fire.In 2009 a NASA Predator equipped with an infrared imaging sensor helped the U.S. Forest Service assess damage from a fire in Angeles National Forest. In 2008, a drone capable of detecting hot spots helped firefighters assess movement of a series of wildfires stretching from Southern California's Lake Arrowhead to San Diego.

The Rim Fire started Aug. 17 and quickly exploded in size, becoming one of the 10 largest California wildfires on record. Its progression slowed earlier this week when it moved from parts of the forest with thick underbrush that had not burned in nearly a century to areas that had seen fire in the past two decades.
But it will burn for months, possibly until California's dry season ends this fall."My prediction is it will burn until we see rain," said Hugh Safford, a regional ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service.That means the smoke could continue to foul air north of Yosemite in the Lake Tahoe basin and neighboring Nevada, although residents received something of a reprieve Wednesday when for the first time in three days blue sky was sometimes visible through the haze.The air quality index in the Reno area still had improved only to the "unhealthy" level, and in Douglas County, Nev., school children were kept indoors again when the index registered in the "hazardous" category Wednesday morning.

The air was clear, however, in the tourist mecca of Yosemite Valley, home to the towering Half Dome and El Capitan rock formations and the 2,425-foot plunge of Yosemite Falls.The Rim Fire has destroyed 111 structures, including 11 homes, and posed a threat to ancient giant sequoias.The fire also has threatened San Francisco's water supply at the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, but Stratton said it was burning itself out as it approached and that crews were lighting back burns to push it back into the wilderness.
