North Korea fires three short-range missiles

The UISG represents the superior generals of more than 200 male religious congregations.In 2006 and 2009, when the Vatican would not do anything its Salesian Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone was not okay with, his fellow Salesian Fr. Pascual Chávez Villanueva, Rector Major of the Society of St. John Bosco, served two mandates as head of the Union. Not long after the first Jesuit in history was elected Pope, the world leader of the Society of Jesus has now been appointed as head of the UISG.Up until now, Fr. Nicolas was Vice President of the Superiors General and replaces the Franciscan José Rodriguez Carballo (the organisation’s top man for just one year), who was appointed Secretary of the Vatican Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. The new Vice President will be elected during the General Assembly which has been scheduled for November. The Union of Superiors General is an institution of pontifical tight, founded by the Congregation for Religious.Its purpose is to promote the life and mission of individual institutes that work in service of the Church, so as to make their collaboration more efficient and contact with the Holy See and the hierarchy more fruitful.” All superiors general of religious institutes or societies of apostolic life of pontifical right are members of the UISG. Superiors general of institutes of diocesan right can join the Union as adjunct members. The UISG’s supreme body is the general assembly which is required to meet at least once a year. It is responsible for electing the UISG council, which acts as an executive body, comprising a president, vice-president and ten advisors. The superiors general, who are members of the UISG, hold an assembly twice a year to discuss problems and issues of common interest. The UISG also works through the various Commissions, some of them permanent, others established ad hoc, on an as-needed basis.Fr. Nicolas was nicknamed the “black pope” because of the colour of his cassock, because he has been elected to his position for life, just like the Pope and because as the Jesuit superior, he is the leader of the largest and most powerful religious order in the world. His long experience in Asia -a land that is proving fertile for evangelisation - and his ability to “govern” are qualities the Society of Jesus sought back in January 2008 when Nicolas was appointed as leader of the world’s 19.200 Jesuits. His training and pastoral experience were gained in Asia, especially Japan.The Spanish theologian is the second out of the order’s 29 successors to come from the Land of the Rising Sun, after the missionary Pedro Arrupe (one of the witnesses of the Hiroshima tragedy). Huge Rock Crashes Into Moon, Sparks Giant Explosion

The moon has a new hole on its surface thanks to a boulder that slammed into it in March, creating the biggest explosion scientists have seen on the moon since they started monitoring it.The meteorite crashed on March 17, slamming into the lunar surface at a mind-boggling 56,000 mph (90,000 kph) and creating a new crater 65 feet wide (20 meters). The crash sparked a bright flash of light that would have been visible to anyone looking at the moon at the time with the naked eye, NASA scientists say."On March 17, 2013, an object about the size of a small boulder hit the lunar surface in Mare Imbrium," Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office said in a statement. "It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we've ever seen before." [The Greatest Lunar Crashes Ever] NASA astronomers have been monitoring the moon for lunar meteor impacts for the past eight years, and haven't seen anything this powerful before.Scientists didn't see the impact occur in real time. It was only when Ron Suggs, an analyst at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., reviewed a video of the bright moon crash recorded by one of the moon monitoring program's 14-inch telescopes that the event was discovered.
"It jumped right out at me, it was so bright," Suggs said.Scientists deduced the rock had been roughly 1-foot-wide (between 0.3 to 0.4 meters) and weighted about 88 lbs (40 kg).The explosion it created was as powerful as 5 tons of TNT, NASA scientists said.When researchers looked back at their records from March, they found that the moon meteor might not have been an isolated event."On the night of March 17, NASA and University of Western Ontario all-sky cameras picked up an unusual number of deep-penetrating meteors right here on Earth," Cooke said. "These fireballs were traveling along nearly identical orbits between Earth and the asteroid belt."Though Earth's atmosphere protected our planet's surface from being hit by these meteors, the moon has no such luck. Its lack of an atmosphere exposes it to all incoming space rocks, and the NASA monitoring program has spotted more than 300 meteor strikes that reached its surface since 2005.Part of the motivation for the program is NASA's eventual intent to send astronauts back to the moon. When they arrive, they'll need to know how often meteors impact the surface, and whether certain parts of the year, coinciding with the moon's passage through crowded bits of the solar system, pose special dangers."We'll be keeping an eye out for signs of a repeat performance next year when the Earth-Moon system passes through the same region of space," Cooke said. "Meanwhile, our analysis of the March 17th event continues."The scientists also hope to use NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to photograph the impact site to learn more about how the crash occurred.

2 fires north of LA persist after long fire week

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — A pair of tamed but persistent wildfires still burned in the hills and mountains around Interstate 5 after a wild week of burning brush in the area north of Los Angeles.

A new fire that broke out Friday, the third major blaze in the area in a week, quickly surged to more than 500 acres, briefly threatened an elementary school and led to the temporary evacuation of about 20 homes.
The fire burned very close to I-5 during some of the busiest hours of the week for the heavily traveled route in and out of Los Angeles, but some 350 firefighters were able to get the edge on the blaze as quickly as it arose.The fire was 60 percent contained by nightfall and residents who evacuated were told they could safely return, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.Crews were helped by relatively mild temperatures that were expected to remain into the weekend, but challenged by unpredictable winds and very difficult terrain.With air and ground attacks, firefighters were able to douse the flames closest to Northlake Hills Elementary School and stop a looming threat.The school had a large defensible space around it, so it was easy to protect, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Scott Miller said.The campus was put on lockdown and buses were put on standby for a time in case hundreds of kindergarten through fifth-grade students needed to be evacuated.After the flames were redirected, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Brian Allen said the students were released to their parents without incident.The fire was moving toward Castaic Lake.
The earlier fire that broke out Wednesday near Frazier Park was 55 percent contained Friday after consuming some 4,300 acres.That blaze was not threatening any homes or buildings but fire officials said containing it would be a long, difficult task because it was burning in such rugged and hard-to-reach terrain.

Russia boosts its naval presence in Syria, sends regime new missiles

Many see Russia's anti-ship missile sales and increased naval deployment to Syria as intended to deter Western powers from military intervention in the Syrian civil war.

Russia has deployed upwards of a dozen ships to its naval base in Syria over the past three months, and recently sent advanced anti-ship missiles to the embattled Syrian government, highlighting the depth of Moscow’s commitment to the Assad regime and the challenges in finding an internationally palatable solution to the crisis.Some believe Russia’s increased presence is meant to deter Western powers from getting involved militarily with the Syrian conflict, which has killed more than 70,000 people and displaced millions over the past three years. US officials, however, told The Wall Street Journal they do not fear a direct conflict with Russia."It is a show of force. It's muscle flexing," a senior U.S. defense official said of the Russian deployments. "It is about demonstrating their commitment to their interests."Russia supports Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, whereas the US recently stated that a political solution to the crisis would have to exclude the president from the transitional government.The US and Russia last week announced a peace conference on Syria, but a date has not been set. The idea of the conference was met with high hopes from the international community, which has been stymied over how to help draw the Syrian civil war to a close. Today, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the joint conference must be held as soon as possible so that the international community does “not lose momentum.”But Russia’s recent actions around Syria could potentially complicate that goal. Moscow insisted yesterday on the attendance of Iran at any peace conference, another controversial player in the Syrian conflict and on the international stage, reports Reuters.
Iran has long been believed to be moving weapons to Hezbollah via Syria. Earlier this month, Israel conducted an airstrike in Syria, stating that “if there is activity, it is only against Hezbollah, not against the Syrian regime.”Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview posted on a government website yesterday, "Among some of our Western colleagues, there is a desire to narrow the circle of external participants and begin the process from a very small group of countries in a framework which, in essence, would predetermine the negotiating teams, agenda, and maybe even the outcome of talks."Russia's recent delivery of sophisticated anti-ship cruise missiles to Syria also has raised concerns, reports The New York Times. The weapons enable “the regime to deter foreign forces looking to supply the opposition from the sea, or from undertaking a more active role if a no-fly zone or shipping embargo were to be declared at some point,” Nick Brown, editor in chief of IHS Jane’s International Defense Review, told the Times. “It’s a real ship killer.”The Wall Street Journal noted that the missiles appear to contradict earlier Russian reassurances about the kinds of weapons it would supply to Assad's forces.Yakhont missiles are an offensive system. Moscow has told Western diplomats it will supply only defensive weaponry to the Syrian regime. But U.S. and Israeli officials have long been worried about Syria's existing stocks of the weapon. If transferred to Hezbollah or other militant groups, they could provide a serious threat to both Israeli and U.S. warships in the region.Russian Navy and foreign ministry officials didn't respond to requests for comment about the deployments of the warships.French President François Hollande said yesterday that Russia’s ongoing arms supply to the Assad regime was problematic in finding a diplomatic resolution to the civil war, and that rebels needed to be able to keep up military pressure on the Syrian Army."While the Russians are accepting the idea of this conference they continue to give weapons to Bashar al-Assad's regime, so we need to have an attitude that balances that out," Mr. Hollande said.“This weapons transfer is obviously disappointing and will set back efforts to promote the political transition that is in the best interests of the Syrian people and the region,” Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the senior Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement last night. “There is now greater urgency for the U.S. to step up assistance to the moderate opposition forces who can lead Syria after Assad.”Which players will have a role in Syria’s political transition is believed, in part, to be at the crux of the international standstill on Syria. A UN resolution yesterday drew ire from the likes of Russia because it explicitly backed the Syrian National Commission, an opposition group, for future talks on the political transition, reports Agence France-Presse.
“An angry Russia said this would encourage opposition ‘armed actions’ against the Assad government,” AFP reports.

Ex-MI Head: Assad Will be 'Finished' if He Starts a War

If Syrian President starts a war with Israel, he will be “finished”, says former Military Intelligence head Amos Yadlin.

If Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad will start a war with Israel, he will be “finished”, former Military Intelligence head, Maj. Gen. (res.) Amos Yadlin, said on Friday."There is pressure on Assad to respond [to recent Israeli airstrikes in Syria], but he will be finished if he starts a war," Yadlin, who now heads the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), told Channel 10 News.“We must not think that what worked several times will always work,” he added, referring to alleged Israeli airstrikes in Damascus targeting weapons meant for Hizbullah. “Pressure is building up on the other side to respond. We should think carefully if we are ready for an escalation which can develop.”He noted, however, "There is something that I think Assad will avoid at all costs and that is to be dragged into a war with Israel. Assad does not have any interest in Israeli intervention or some external intervention in the terrible war we are seeing there. He is winning because, unlike Mubarak in Egypt, his army is loyal and unlike Qaddafi in Libya there is no foreign intervention. A war with Israel opens the door to foreign intervention in Syria and then he will be finished, so he will be wary of war. But he still has a number of measured and careful steps he might take.”Regarding Russia’s sale of S-300 advanced missile systems to Syria, which Russia has indicated it will go ahead with despite Israeli pressure to drop the deal, Yadlin said, "This is one of the most advanced defense systems, with a long range of about 200 km. It is a mobile system and therefore has a greater chance of survival. It has very advanced systems that can deal with electronic warfare. It has capabilities against low-altitude aircraft."Asked whether the system can hit aircraft at the Ben Gurion Airport, Yadlin replied, “Hitting a plane at the airport will be complicated, but an aircraft at ranges of tens of kilometers above Syria will definitely be in danger.”At the same time, he said, "I would suggest that one understand that there is no air defense system that cannot be dealt with.
