STRONGEST FLARE OF THE YEAR: A sunspot hiding behind the sun's northeastern limb erupted on May 13th at 02:17 UT, producing the strongest solar flare of the year so far. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme UV flash from the X1.7-class eruption:
Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and
Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) tracked a bright
CME emerging from the blast site: movie.
No planets were in the line of fire. However, the
CME appears to be on course to hit NASA's Epoxi
and Spitzer spacecraft on May 15th.The sunspot that produced this blast
is on the farside of the sun. Soon, in a few days,
it will turn toward Earth, emerging into view over
the sun's eastern limb. Stay tuned for a better
view and, perhaps, more flares.

Tsunami of ice plows into dozens of Canadian homes; no one injured in freak disaster
It took about 15 minutes for the ice floes to pour out of Manitoba’s Dauphin Lake and spill onto a couple dozen properties Friday. Homeowners were left picking up the pieces over the weekend.

A living room became an ice box in one home along Dauphin Lake in Ochre Beach, Canada, on Friday.
A staggering tsunami of ice inundated two dozen lakeside homes in
central Canada, where the unexpected disaster sent residents in a panic
and left some houses completely crushed.The extraordinary event lasted just 15 minutes Friday as families in
Manitoba’s Ochre Beach, a rural community along Dauphin Lake, sat down
for dinner or watched TV.“They heard it before they saw it (the ice) coming up their decks,” local official Clayton Watts told the Winnipeg Free Press on Saturday. “Then it came right in their front windows. It was just a matter of minutes.”The booming noise — like a freight train — alerted many people and gave them enough time to safely evacuate, Watts added.“Fortunately, no one was hurt,” he said. “We were very lucky.”
Six homes were completely wrecked while another 14 suffered various damages, according to CBC News.

MEXICO CITY -- Seismic activity has increased at the Popocatepetl
volcano near Mexico City, leading authorities to alert towns in two
central states and the capital.Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center says the white-capped
volcano spewed a plume of steam more than one kilometre into the sky.
The volcano shook during Saturday night, sometimes emitting glowing rock
over the crater.The government deployed soldiers and federal police to the area Sunday
in the event of a bigger eruption, and officials closed off an
18-square-kilometre zone around the cone of the 5,450-metre volcano.
State authorities prepared shelters.
Popocatepetl has put out small eruptions of ash almost daily since a
round of activity began in 1994. The eruptions started strengthening two
weeks ago and have increased even more this weekend.
