Most of South Korea's cases have had connections to the first patient — either medical staff who treated him or patients who stayed near him at the hospital before he was diagnosed and isolated, and their family members.Tests on a 58-year-old woman who died of acute respiratory failure Monday showed she had been infected with the disease before her death, the Health Ministry said in a statement. The measure was taken after many parents asked the schools to take action, agency officials said.There is a growing sense of public alarm over the virus, with South Korean media criticizing the government for failing to swiftly cope with MERS in the initial stage of its landing in the country. Major shopping malls have reported a sharp increase in sales of masks, hand sanitizers and mouthwashes, and many people have been seen wearing masks on Seoul streets over the past few days.Last week, the son of one of the patients ignored doctor's orders to cancel a trip to China, where he was later diagnosed as that country's first MERS case. VATICAN CITY-The Vatican’s main spokesman has downplayed comments made about Australian Cardinal George Pell by a member of Pope Francis’ commission on clergy sexual abuse, saying the member was speaking in his own name and not in the authority of the commission.Commission member Peter Saunders, an English survivor of clergy sexual abuse, said in an Australian television interview Sunday that Pell had had an “almost sociopathic” disregard for abuse victims.Responding to Saunders’ interview, Vatican spokesman Jesuit Fr. Federico Lombardi said in a statement Monday that Saunders was speaking in his own name. The papal commission on clergy sexual abuse, Lombardi said in the statement, "does not have the task of investigating and pronouncing specific judgment on single cases.”The Vatican spokesman also referred journalists to Pell’s own statements on the matter, saying those "must be considered reliable and worthy of respect and attention."Saunders serves as one of 17 members of the papal commission, which is formally known as the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. He made his comments about Pell Sunday on the popular television program 60 Minutes, the Australian version of the U.S. newsmagazine broadcast.In his interview, Saunders said he thought Pell’s position as the head of a new office at the Vatican consolidating control of the city-state’s financial matters was “untenable.”“I personally think his position is untenable, because he has now a catalog of denials, he has a catalog of denigrating people, of acting with callousness, cold-heartedness, [he is] almost sociopathic I would go so far as to say,” said Saunders.“He is making a mockery of the papal commission, of the pope himself, but most of all, of victims and survivors,” Saunders continued.Pell, who served as the archbishop of Sydney from 2001-14, was appointed by Francis to lead the Vatican’s new Secretariat for the Economy last year.The cardinal issued a statement calling Saunders’ remarks “false and misleading,” and saying that he was consulting with lawyers about how to respond. BRUSSELS, Today, 09:21-Leaders from Germany, France, the EU and the International Monetary Fund met on Monday night (1 June) in Berlin to prepare what could be a final offer for Greece.German chancellor Angela Merkel, French president Francois Hollande and EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker were in the German capital for a meeting with European Roundtable of Industrialists and had planned to talk about Greece in the margins of the meeting.They were joined in a dramatic last minute move by European Central Bank president Mario Draghi and IMF leader Christine Lagarde.The talks ended around midnight and Merkel's office issued a statement saying the participants "agreed that work must now be continued with greater intensity”."They have been in closest contact in recent days and want to remain so in the coming days, both among themselves and naturally also with the Greek government," the statement continued.The unscheduled meeting of Greece's creditors took place four days before Greece is due to repay €300 million to the IMF, with three other repayments also coming later this month.An agreement with Greece would unblock a €7.2 billion international loan.The talks were to work on a common proposal that would be sent to the Greek government this week, said diplomatic sources.According to the Financial Times, the talks in Berlin focused on a technical paper prepared by the European Commission that could be the basis for a compromise.Greece's lenders hold different views over whether to make concessions to Athens, with the IMF reportedly more strict on the rules and the Commission and ECB more willing to fence off the Eurozone from the risk of a Grexit.The statement issued after the meeting suggests that these differences were not completely overcome.The Berlin meeting also took place the day after Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras wrote in Le Monde newspaper that his government already made "serious concessions" and was not responsible for the lack of agreement.German media said on Monday night that the Greek PM was ready to consider pension cuts and an increase of the retirement age.The question now will be whether a "take it or leave it" offer from the lenders will help Tsipras win the backing of his Syria party, where tensions are growing over the prospect of further concessions.On Tuesday morning, EU Finance commissioner Pierre Moscovici said on French radio that "discussions are starting to bear fruits"."A deal is possible, desirable, necessary and it is within reach," he said.

BRUSSELS, Today, 12:53-With Greek leaders in 11th-hour talks on the country’s second bailout, Greek MPs are investigating the legality of the bailouts and whether Greek debt has to be repaid.A “truth” committee on public debt and a committee for the “memoranda”, the name of the documents which contain the bailout terms, were set up in March and April under the leadership of Zoe Konstantopoulou, the speaker of the Vouli, the Greek parliament.Konstantopoulou (c), with Sakorafa (l), and Belgian economist Toussaint on the debt truth committee-Their first findings are expected on 18 June.The probes are complemented by a committee on German World War II reparations and on the return of Greek archeological treasures.They are also complemented by the reopening, on 1 May, of the Siemens and Lagarde List cases by the Vouli’s committee on institutions and transparency.The Siemens case involves bribes for Greek officials in exchange for public contracts for the German firm in the 1990s and in the run-up to the 2004 Athens Olympics.The Lagarde List is a register of tax evaders transmitted to the Greek government by International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde in 2010, but never properly investigated.The various initiatives are designed to delegitmise the austerity measures imposed by Greece’s creditors, the EU - the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the European Central Bank (ECB) - since 2010.They are being used as a “bargaining chip” in the bailout talks.They’re designed to help Syriza heal tensions inside its own ranks, with radical MPs growing more critical of the PM’s, Alexis Tsipras’, concessions.They are also designed to harm his political opponents, the conservative New Democracy (ND) and the socialist Pasok parties.The old Greek elite, which has shared power since the country’s return to democracy in 1974, agreed the bailout terms and stands accused of shady relations with Greek oligarchs.

"Greece is not a liegeman whose lenders can play games behind its back," Tsipras said on 7 April, during the vote which set up the memoranda committee.The memoranda probe could be the most explosive domestically. It’s looking into the circumstances in which the Pasok government of George Papandreou and the ND-Pasok government of Lucas Papademos signed terms with the troika, a group of EU, IMF and ECB officials.Konstantopoulou, the Vouli speaker, who used to be human rights lawyer, told EUobserver it could prompt criminal charges."The committee will look into possible criminal responsibility for the memoranda regime which has basically victimised the Greek population but also totally destroyed the Greek economy,” she said.It’s composed of Syriza, ND and Pasok MPs and has already summoned witnesses from Greece’s Public Debt Management Agency, the General Accounting Office, and the Hellenic Statistical Authority. Some MPs also want to interrogate former Greek finance ministers and international officials, such as former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet, and former EU finance commissioner Olli Rehn.
Truth
The truth committee, despite its name and despite Konstantopoulou’s patronage, is not a formal parliamentary inquiry.It’s an audit conducted by a group of some 30 experts from civil society, half of whom are Greek and half of whom are foreign.It includes academics, jurists, and former civil servants and is co-led by a Belgian economist, Eric Toussaint, and by Ecuador’s former finance minister Diego Borja.Ecuador, under president Rafael Correa, ran a similar audit before suspending international repayments in 2008."It’s very widely believed, justly believed, that a very big part of what is currently called the [Greek] public debt is illegitimate, illegal, and odious, and, of course, unsustainable”, Konstantopoulou said.Her vocabulary refers to notions used by global anti-debt activists.Campaigners say that: if debt harms public interest but favours a minority then it’s illegitimate; if it violates the debtor’s national laws, it’s illegal; that if it violates human rights, it’s odious; and if it can’t be repaid unless it harms fundamental rights, such as the right to healthcare, it’s unsustainable.
Timing
The full audit is to last at least a year.But a preliminary report will be issued on 18 June, shortly before the end of the current bailout programme, when Tsipras is set to ask for debt restructuring and for new, long-term, assistance.Patrick Saurin, a French trade unionist on the truth committee, told EUobserver “our work is to identify the four kinds of debt” in Greece."The government will quickly have a clear picture and will be able to decide on a debt moratorium or cancellation”.It prompts the question whether Tsipras will follow Ecuador and use the “truth” report to also stop repayments."The government has a mandate to serve the people, so I’m sure it will make good use of the outcome of the works of the committee”, Konstantopoulou said.Sofia Sakorafa, a Syriza MEP, who helped initiate the audit, told EUobserver it’s “a robust bargaining chip” in Tsipras’ negotiations."The committee aims to equip the Greek government with legal arguments on the issue of the removal of the debt”.moral high ground-Referring to the mixed bag of Vouli initiatives, Sakorafa added: "clearly, there is a political and moral link" between the probes. JIANLI COUNTY, China (Reuters) - Rescuers fought bad weather on Tuesday as they searched for more than 400 people, many of them elderly Chinese tourists, missing after a cruise boat was buffeted by a freak tornado and capsized on the Yangtze River.The accident on Monday night is likely to end up as China's worst shipping disaster in almost 70 years.Divers and other rescue workers pulled five people they found trapped in the upturned hull of the four-deck Eastern Star, a fraction of the 458 people state media reported were on board when the ship capsized.Distraught relatives of some of the passengers scuffled with officials in the city of Shanghai, where many of those on board booked their trips, angry about what they said was a lack of information.Dozens of rescue boats battled wind and rain to reach the ship, which lay upturned in water about 15 meters (50 feet) deep.The Xinhua news agency said rescuers could hear people calling for help from inside the ship's hull and television showed rescuers cutting through it with an angle grinder.One of the people pulled from the capsized boat was a 65-year-old woman. A 71-year-old man who tested positive for the virus last week also died, it said.The statement said both stayed at the same hospital with the first patient.Health officials said Tuesday that about 750 people in South Korea were isolated at their homes or in state-run facilities after having contact with patients infected with the virus. They said the number could rise and that depending on their conditions many of the isolated could be banned from leaving the country.More than 50 schools and kindergartens near a hospital near Seoul where the 58-year-old patient who died was treated have canceled classes from Wednesday to Friday to let children stay home, according to the education agency in Gyeonggi province, which surrounds Seoul. The measure was taken after many parents asked the schools to take action, agency officials said.There is a growing sense of public alarm over the virus, with South Korean media criticizing the government for failing to swiftly cope with MERS in the initial stage of its landing in the country. Major shopping malls have reported a sharp increase in sales of masks, hand sanitizers and mouthwashes, and many people have been seen wearing masks on Seoul streets over the past few days.Last week, the son of one of the patients ignored doctor's orders to cancel a trip to China, where he was later diagnosed as that country's first MERS case. China isolated the South Korean man at a hospital, and Hong Kong authorities said Sunday that 18 travelers were being quarantined because they sat near him, but they were not showing symptoms.MERS was discovered in 2012 and has mostly been centered in Saudi Arabia. It belongs to the family of coronaviruses that includes the common cold and SARS, and can cause fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure. Federico Lombardi said in a statement Monday that Saunders was speaking in his own name. The papal commission on clergy sexual abuse, Lombardi said in the statement, "does not have the task of investigating and pronouncing specific judgment on single cases.”The Vatican spokesman also referred journalists to Pell’s own statements on the matter, saying those "must be considered reliable and worthy of respect and attention."Saunders serves as one of 17 members of the papal commission, which is formally known as the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. BRUSSELS, Today, 12:53-With Greek leaders in 11th-hour talks on the country’s second bailout, Greek MPs are investigating the legality of the bailouts and whether Greek debt has to be repaid.A “truth” committee on public debt and a committee for the “memoranda”, the name of the documents which contain the bailout terms, were set up in March and April under the leadership of Zoe Konstantopoulou, the speaker of the Vouli, the Greek parliament.Konstantopoulou (c), with Sakorafa (l), and Belgian economist Toussaint on the debt truth committee-Their first findings are expected on 18 June.The probes are complemented by a committee on German World War II reparations and on the return of Greek archeological treasures.They are also complemented by the reopening, on 1 May, of the Siemens and Lagarde List cases by the Vouli’s committee on institutions and transparency.The Siemens case involves bribes for Greek officials in exchange for public contracts for the German firm in the 1990s and in the run-up to the 2004 Athens Olympics.The Lagarde List is a register of tax evaders transmitted to the Greek government by International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde in 2010, but never properly investigated.The various initiatives are designed to delegitmise the austerity measures imposed by Greece’s creditors, the EU - the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the European Central Bank (ECB) - since 2010.They are being used as a “bargaining chip” in the bailout talks.They’re designed to help Syriza heal tensions inside its own ranks, with radical MPs growing more critical of the PM’s, Alexis Tsipras’, concessions.They are also designed to harm his political opponents, the conservative New Democracy (ND) and the socialist Pasok parties.The old Greek elite, which has shared power since the country’s return to democracy in 1974, agreed the bailout terms and stands accused of shady relations with Greek oligarchs.

"Greece is not a liegeman whose lenders can play games behind its back," Tsipras said on 7 April, during the vote which set up the memoranda committee.The memoranda probe could be the most explosive domestically. It’s looking into the circumstances in which the Pasok government of George Papandreou and the ND-Pasok government of Lucas Papademos signed terms with the troika, a group of EU, IMF and ECB officials.Konstantopoulou, the Vouli speaker, who used to be human rights lawyer, told EUobserver it could prompt criminal charges."The committee will look into possible criminal responsibility for the memoranda regime which has basically victimised the Greek population but also totally destroyed the Greek economy,” she said.It’s composed of Syriza, ND and Pasok MPs and has already summoned witnesses from Greece’s Public Debt Management Agency, the General Accounting Office, and the Hellenic Statistical Authority. Some MPs also want to interrogate former Greek finance ministers and international officials, such as former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet, and former EU finance commissioner Olli Rehn.
Truth
The truth committee, despite its name and despite Konstantopoulou’s patronage, is not a formal parliamentary inquiry.It’s an audit conducted by a group of some 30 experts from civil society, half of whom are Greek and half of whom are foreign.It includes academics, jurists, and former civil servants and is co-led by a Belgian economist, Eric Toussaint, and by Ecuador’s former finance minister Diego Borja.Ecuador, under president Rafael Correa, ran a similar audit before suspending international repayments in 2008."It’s very widely believed, justly believed, that a very big part of what is currently called the [Greek] public debt is illegitimate, illegal, and odious, and, of course, unsustainable”, Konstantopoulou said.Her vocabulary refers to notions used by global anti-debt activists.Campaigners say that: if debt harms public interest but favours a minority then it’s illegitimate; if it violates the debtor’s national laws, it’s illegal; that if it violates human rights, it’s odious; and if it can’t be repaid unless it harms fundamental rights, such as the right to healthcare, it’s unsustainable.
Timing
The full audit is to last at least a year.But a preliminary report will be issued on 18 June, shortly before the end of the current bailout programme, when Tsipras is set to ask for debt restructuring and for new, long-term, assistance.Patrick Saurin, a French trade unionist on the truth committee, told EUobserver “our work is to identify the four kinds of debt” in Greece."The government will quickly have a clear picture and will be able to decide on a debt moratorium or cancellation”.It prompts the question whether Tsipras will follow Ecuador and use the “truth” report to also stop repayments."The government has a mandate to serve the people, so I’m sure it will make good use of the outcome of the works of the committee”, Konstantopoulou said.Sofia Sakorafa, a Syriza MEP, who helped initiate the audit, told EUobserver it’s “a robust bargaining chip” in Tsipras’ negotiations."The committee aims to equip the Greek government with legal arguments on the issue of the removal of the debt”.moral high ground-Referring to the mixed bag of Vouli initiatives, Sakorafa added: "clearly, there is a political and moral link" between the probes. JIANLI COUNTY, China (Reuters) - Rescuers fought bad weather on Tuesday as they searched for more than 400 people, many of them elderly Chinese tourists, missing after a cruise boat was buffeted by a freak tornado and capsized on the Yangtze River.The accident on Monday night is likely to end up as China's worst shipping disaster in almost 70 years.Divers and other rescue workers pulled five people they found trapped in the upturned hull of the four-deck Eastern Star, a fraction of the 458 people state media reported were on board when the ship capsized.Distraught relatives of some of the passengers scuffled with officials in the city of Shanghai, where many of those on board booked their trips, angry about what they said was a lack of information.Dozens of rescue boats battled wind and rain to reach the ship, which lay upturned in water about 15 meters (50 feet) deep.The Xinhua news agency said rescuers could hear people calling for help from inside the ship's hull and television showed rescuers cutting through it with an angle grinder.One of the people pulled from the capsized boat was a 65-year-old woman. The ship's captain and the chief engineer, who were among the few to be rescued, had been detained by police for questioning, Xinhua said.According to the Yangtze River navigation administration, the pair said the ship sank quickly after it was caught in the tornado.Xinhua reported that initial investigations had found the ship was not overloaded and it had enough life vests on board for its passengers. Those rescued were wearing life vests, Xinhua said.Among those on board were 406 tourists, many of them elderly, along with 47 crew members and five tour guides, the People's Daily said.State radio said the ship went over in about two minutes and no distress call had been issued. 12 And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be desolate forty years: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries.

Ukraine and the West suspect it was destroyed by a Russian surface-to-air missile fired by Russian soldiers or Russia-backed separatist rebels fighting in the area. Washington (AFP) - The US military released a video Monday of a Russian Su-24 bomber flying past an American warship in the Black Sea to dispel what it called inaccurate media reports about a routine encounter.In the video, a Su-24 aircraft appears in the distance, then zooms by the USS Ross -- a guided-missile destroyer.Other Russian bombers also flew within sight of the ship, officials said.Such footage is rarely released publicly but the US Navy decided to post it "because we were unsatisfied with the press reporting, and we wanted to show exactly what happened," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren told reporters.None of the Russian aircraft that flew by the ship were armed and neither side took any aggressive action, Warren said."This was simply a ship and a plane passing in the day in this case," he said.Some Russian media had suggested that the aircraft forced the American destroyer to shift course away from Russian territorial waters off the coast of Crimea.But the Pentagon said those reports were "erroneous" and "didn't reflect the facts."The USS Ross was in international waters and "never changed course, never deviated from its mission," he said.And there was no communication between the Russian planes and the US vessel.The Russian aircraft got to within about 1,600 feet (500 meters) from the ship while flying at an altitude of about 600 feet, officials said.With tensions rising over Moscow's armed intervention in Ukraine over the past year, Russia has stepped up flights of its bomber fleet, particularly over the airspace of NATO states.
