Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu: Elections 'A Huge Miracle'-Chief Rabbi of Tzfat calls on Jews to thank G-d for elections results, says alternative was second Disengagement.By Benny Toker and Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 3/22/2015, 8:46 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The elections were a "miracle" and the result of Divine intervention, Tzfat (Safed) city rabbi, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, stated Sunday."God had a positive effect in this election, it is a miracle and we have to thank Him for everything that happened," Rabbi Eliyahu stated in a special Arutz Sheva interview. "It was the rescue of the settlement movement (i.e. Jews in Judea and Samaria - ed.), the Torah world, and the Jewish nature of the state.""We could have been under the control of people who degrade mezuzah and everything holy," he continued, referring to the inflammatory comments by leftist activist Yair Garbuz during a pro-Labor rally earlier this month, "and now we're under these MKs - even if not all observant - who appreciate Torah, God, and the settlements.""Thank God for doing this and purifying our hearts," he added.Rabbi Eliyahu did not spare words over those who lost."There has been a great miracle against all the poison against [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu and the Likud, as the waves of hatred that flooded the Israeli street prosecuted us through foreign money," he noted, referring to the V15 anti-Netanyahu campaign funded by foreign donors, particularly from the US. "But in the end foreign money fights against the holy, and God.""Our sages said, 'Do not celebrate the fall of your enemies,' - enemies if they are from within Israel and not from other nations," he added. "So are not happy that our brothers have fallen, we are only sorry that they were swayed by foreign funding."Rabbi Eliyahu also brushed off concerns over the loss for Jewish Home, the flagship Religious Zionist party, which lost several seats in the 20th Knesset."The train moves forward now, and that's the most important thing," he said. "True, we maybe took a step back, but we're in a train which goes forward - because otherwise we could have seen a second Disengagement, a large chilul Hashem (desecration of God's name - ed.) which we would have needed rescue from."
Likud Unequivocally Recommends Netanyahu for Prime Minister-As consultations with President Rivlin begin, MK Zeev Elkin, speaking for Likud, recommends Binyamin Netanyahu form the next government.By Hezki Ezra, Cynthia Blank-First Publish: 3/22/2015, 11:57 AM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS
President Reuven Rivlin began consultations Sunday morning with the representatives of the ten parties elected to the 20th Knesset."In a democracy the majority decides - and the majority expressed its will clearly in these elections," Rivlin told Likud representatives - the first to meet with him at his official residence Sunday at 10 a.m."The role of the president after elections is to serve as a trustee of the public, and to ensure the process of forming the next government is as fast and transparent as possible," he added.According to the President, in light of the security and social issues Israel faces, and the crucial need for a budget, a new government must be formed as soon as possible - and early consultations will achieve that."With the beginning of the consultations, I call on elected officials to do all they can to speed up the process and the coalition negotiations, in order to allow the system to function properly again," Rivlin said.Noting the stormy and highly passionate election, the President stressed it was time to start the defragmentation process and begin helping Israeli society heal."While the government that will form was elected by the majority of Israeli citizens, it will have to respond to the needs of all the citizens of Israel," he added.MK Zeev Elkin, who served as one of Likud's representatives during the meeting, informed Rivlin that the Likud party wishes to see its leader, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, form the next government."The public has spoken and there has not been a case where the elections were more personal - yes Netanyahu or no Netanyahu - and the public decided," Elkin noted."Therefore, I recommend Binyamin Netanyahu for prime minister and call on all other party leaders, especially those in the national camp, to do this job as quickly as possible and recommend Netanyahu without games, without negotiations and extortions, as much as possible, so as to establish a stable government in Israel."

Rivlin once again promised to give the task of forming a coalition to the party best suited to assemble a government, ''and because the law is not listed and not clear enough, it may be necessary to amend the law."The President stressed that ''all the talk heard during the election campaign that the head of the largest party is responsible for the formation of the government, were without basis."
Joint Arab List: Netanyahu is an Illegitimate Leader-Blasting Netanyahu's remarks about Arab voters to the President, Joint Arab List alleges his next government will be 'racist and dangerous.'By Hezki Ezra, Cynthia Blank-First Publish: 3/22/2015, 3:07 PM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS
Joint Arab List representatives met Sunday with President Reuven Rivlin as part of the President's consultations with parties on who will form the next government. The list - comprised of Balad, Hadah, and the United Arab List - expressed strong opposition to a coalition formed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, claiming that a government under his leadership will only continue "the occupation and oppression" against Palestinians. The Joint List's representatives appealed to Rivlin to denounce Netanyahu's "dangerous" behavior from election day, in which he called on citizens to come out to vote to combat the large numbers of Arab voters."Netanyahu's behavior makes his tenure as prime minister illegitimate and stands in sharp contrast to what the President himself said, when he called for all citizens to come out and vote," the contingency alleged.MK Jamal Zahalka (Balad) said that any government [formed by Netanyahu] would be both dangerous and racist."Liberman says he's going to behead us, Bennett said we're car thieves, and Netanyahu says that the votes of Arab citizens are dangerous," Zahalka explained."What do they want from us? If casting a ballot is dangerous, what do they want? That we'll throw stones? This is less dangerous...they need to encourage us to vote," Zahalka charged."We have a great power, and we'll give a fight that you haven't seen before," Zahalka promised. "The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees don't interest us, rather committees that will help us end the occupation.""Netanyahu crossed a red line and we've drafted a complaint that will be filed with the Attorney General tomorrow. We will take and exhaust all measures to ensure Netanyahu gets what he deserves."Joint Arab List Chairman and incoming MK, Ayman Odeh also attacked Netanyahu after the meeting with President RIvlin."The prime minister cannot be someone who chooses election tactics that incite against an entire population and challenge the basic rights of their citizenship," Odeh argued."He chooses to base his leadership on intimidation, despair, and incitement against citizens of the very country he claims to stand as leader for.""We are looking at the next Knesset and know we will have a persistent struggle against racist legislation, a deepening of the occupation and the settlements, and an increase of social gaps," Odeh added.

Obama: US 'Evaluating' its Stance on Palestinian Statehood Bid-Obama says White House takes Netanyahu 'at his word' in opposing 2-state solution, hints US could support PA bids at the UN in response.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 3/22/2015, 12:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
US President Barack Obama has warned the White House was "evaluating its options" vis-a-vis imposing a two-state solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, and specifically regarding the US's commitment to veto unilateral Palestinian moves at the UN.Obama made the comments in a Huffington Post interview, late last week, in which he made his first direct response to the reelection of Binyamin Netanyahu's Likud party to lead the next Israeli government.Asked about Netanyahu's comments both during and after the Israeli elections - first rejecting the possibility of two states given the current realities in the region, and later insisting he was still committed in principle - Obama said he had spoken directly to the Israeli PM to emphasize his own stance."I did indicate to him that we continue to believe that a two-state solution is the only way for the long-term security of Israel, if it wants to stay both a Jewish state and democratic," the president said. "And I indicated to him that given his statements prior to the election, it is going to be hard to find a path where people are seriously believing that negotiations are possible."Asked whether the US would "continue to oppose Palestinian efforts to gain statehood at the United Nations", Obama added that "we’re evaluating what’s taking place.""I think Prime Minister Netanyahu still has to form a government; we’ll be in close consultation with them. We're going to make sure, regardless of disagreements we have on policy, that our military and intelligence cooperation to keep the Israeli people safe continues and that cooperation also helps the American people stay safe."But we are going to continue to insist that, from our point of view, the status quo is unsustainable. And that while taking into complete account Israel's security, we can't just in perpetuity maintain the status quo, expand settlements. That's not a recipe for stability in the region."Asked whether he believed Netanyahu was "serious about a Palestinian state," Obama answered bluntly that "we take him at his word when he said that it wouldn't happen during his prime ministership, and so that's why we've got to evaluate what other options are available to make sure that we don't see a chaotic situation in the region." Obama also addressed the possible impact of Netanyahu's reelection on ongoing nuclear talks with Iran.Netanyahu has been the most vocal opponent of what many both in the Middle East and the West see as an impending "bad deal" which would allow Iran to maintain nuclear weapons capability. But despite that the president said he didn't think the Israeli elections results would have a significant impact on the course of negotiations with Iran."Obviously there's significant skepticism in Israel generally about Iran. And understandably. Iran has made vile comments, anti-Semitic comments, comments about the destruction of Israel. It is precisely for that reason that even before I became president, I said Iran could not have a nuclear weapon," he said."What is going to have an effect on whether we get a deal done is, number one, is Iran prepared to show, to prove to the world that it is not developing a nuclear weapon, and can we verify that in an intrusive, consistent way."Tellingly, Obama voiced significant skepticism about the course of negotiations, saying that "frankly, they have not yet made the kind of concessions that are I think going to be needed for a final deal to get done."Nevertheless, he said the possibility was still there, although "we've still got some more to do."
What Tensions? Israel's Elbit to Sell Marines New Laser System-President Obama's 're-evaluations' aside, Israeli-American defense cooperation is going full steam ahead with a new deal.By Moshe Cohen-First Publish: 3/22/2015, 4:32 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
U.S. President Barack H. Obama may be “re-evaluating” his administration's support of Israel, but Israeli-American defense cooperation is going full steam ahead. On Sunday, Elbit Systems of America, a subsidiary of the parent defense systems company in Israel, announced that it had won a $73.4 million contract to supply the U.S. Marines with a laser observation system.Elbit's Common Laser Range Finder-Integrated Capability (CLRF-IC) will replace the Marine's currently fielded equipment with new, up to date, and more accurate systems that provides 24-hour observation capability, accurate range to targets, the ability to confirm spot on target with laser designation systems, and accurate target location in a variety of conditions, including magnetically disturbed environments, areas with overhead clutter, and in areas where GPS is unavailable, Elbit said, announcing the deal. The Elbit technology was developed in Israel. Installation work will be done at a Marine facility in Merrimack, New Hampshire.“We are pleased to provide the USMC with their new rugged CLRF-IC, a lightweight system that is mission-ready and safer for the foot-mobile Marine,” said Raanan Horowitz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Elbit Systems of America. “Leveraging the innovative capabilities of our imaging, range finding, and degraded environment navigation solutions, Marines are now able to acquire targets without breaking cover from their concealed fighting positions and minimize impact while on the move.”
Ex-CIA Head Says Iran is a Greater Danger than ISIS-Rebuking Obama rapprochement, Petraeus warns Iran is taking control in Iraq, and is an enemy of the US and its allies.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 3/20/2015, 2:53 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
At a time when US President Barack Obama's administration has shown a softening stance vis-a-vis Iran, even considering an alliance against Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in Iraq and Syria, former CIA head Gen. David Petraeus warned Iran is a greater danger than ISIS in Iraq.In an interview conducted in Iraq and posted by the Washington Post on Friday, Petraeus, who led US troops during the 2007-2008 surge in Iraq, spoke about the challenges facing the war-torn country.Speaking at the annual Sulaimani Forum of Iraqi leaders in northern Iraq's Kurdistan region, the general acknowledged that aside from Iraqi factionalism and sectarianism leading to disaster, the US had made many mistakes in the country as well."This includes the squandering of so much of what we and our coalition and Iraqi partners paid such a heavy cost to achieve," he said, noting how the US withdrew all forces in 2011. Petraeus voiced hopes that the joint efforts in the region can put an end to the chaos."The hard-earned progress of the Surge was sustained for over three years. What transpired after that, starting in late 2011, came about as a result of mistakes and misjudgments whose consequences were predictable. And there is plenty of blame to go around for that," he noted. Obama had made withdrawing US troops from Iraq a key point of his platform.Despite recent focus being put on ISIS and its well publicized atrocities, which have led the US to form a multi-nation coalition conducting strikes against the group, Petraeus pointed the finger elsewhere concerning the greatest threat in the region."I would argue that the foremost threat to Iraq’s long-term stability and the broader regional equilibrium is not the Islamic State; rather, it is Shiite militias, many backed by - and some guided by - Iran," warned the general. The Shi'ite militias may have blocked ISIS from surging into Baghdad, but they have also killed Sunni civilians and committed atrocities, he noted. By doing so, they have increased the Sunni-Shi'ite divide and marginalized Sunnis in a way that strengthens Sunni radicalism and ISIS, said Petraeus.Warning specifically about Iranian designs, he added "longer term, Iranian-backed Shia militia could emerge as the preeminent power in the country, one that is outside the control of the government and instead answerable to Tehran."Via terror proxies, Iran has been seizing power in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and Iraq, as well as great influence in other parts of the region.
US attitude to Middle East has been flawed
Speaking about the push to distance from Iraq, a move that Obama vocally advanced, Petraeus noted "there was certainly a sense in Washington that Iraq should be put in our rearview mirror, that whatever happened here was somewhat peripheral to our national security and that we could afford to redirect our attention to more important challenges.""In retrospect, a similar attitude existed with respect to the civil war in Syria - again, a sense that developments in Syria constituted a horrible tragedy to be sure, but a tragedy at the outset, at least, that did not seem to pose a threat to our national security," he continued."But in hindsight, few, I suspect, would contend that our approach was what it might - or should - have been. In fact, if there is one lesson that I hope we’ve learned from the past few years, it is that there is a linkage between the internal conditions of countries in the Middle East and our own vital security interests."When asked about Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander who has taken a very public role in Iraq aiding the fight against ISIS, after establishing and directing Shi'ite militias that attacks US troops, Petraeus had sharp words."I have several thoughts when I see the pictures of him, but most of those thoughts probably aren't suitable for publication in a family newspaper like yours," he quipped. "What I will say is that he is very capable and resourceful individual, a worthy adversary. He has played his hand well. But this is a long game, so let’s see how events transpire."
Iran is our enemy
The general noted how Soleimani used to be a "man of the shadows," but in recent months he has become strikingly visible in pictures published of him at the battle front. That turns of events underscores "a very important reality: The current Iranian regime is not our ally in the Middle East. It is ultimately part of the problem, not the solution. The more the Iranians are seen to be dominating the region, the more it is going to inflame Sunni radicalism and fuel the rise of groups like the Islamic State.""While the U.S. and Iran may have convergent interests in the defeat of Daesh (ISIS), our interests generally diverge. The Iranian response to the open hand offered by the U.S. has not been encouraging," he noted, regarding Obama's outreach to the Islamic regime.Petraeus added "Iranian power in the Middle East is thus a double problem. It is foremost problematic because it is deeply hostile to us and our friends. But it is also dangerous because, the more it is felt, the more it sets off reactions that are also harmful to our interests - Sunni radicalism and, if we aren't careful, the prospect of nuclear proliferation as well."The general recounted how, in 2008, a decisive battle took place between Iraqi Security Forces and the Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias."In the midst of the fight, I received word from a very senior Iraqi official that Qassem Soleimani had given him a message for me. When I met with the senior Iraqi, he conveyed the message: 'General Petraeus, you should be aware that I, Qassem Soleimani, control Iran’s policy for Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, and Afghanistan,'" he recalled."The point was clear: He owned the policy and the region, and I should deal with him. When my Iraqi interlocutor asked what I wanted to convey in return, I told him to tell Soleimani that he could 'pound sand," concluded the general.
