Steinitz: Talks with Iran Are Moving in the Wrong Direction-Intelligence Minister suggests that choosing not to reach a deal with Iran might pave the way for a better deal down the road.By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 10/20/2014, 4:14 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The talks between world powers and Iran “are moving in the wrong direction”, Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz warned on Sunday. In an opinion piece entitled “Don't Make a Bad Deal With Iran”, which was published in The New York Times, Steinitz wrote that Israel “is deeply concerned about the trajectory of the ongoing negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear program. The talks are moving in the wrong direction, especially on the core issue of uranium enrichment.”“Although Iran has modified its tone recently, there have hardly been any changes of substance since the soft-spoken president, Hassan Rouhani, took over the reins from his aggressive predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,” wrote Steinitz.“Neither administration has budged from the insistence that Iran should retain most of the 9,400 operational centrifuges it deploys to enrich uranium, as well as its nearly completed nuclear reactor in Arak, which could produce plutonium in the future.”“Iran has softened its inflammatory anti-Western rhetoric and shown some flexibility on less important issues but we must not be duped by these gestures. President Obama must stand by his declaration that no deal with Iran is better than a bad deal,” according to Steinitz.“Many experts argue that because a deal with Iran would necessarily include some restrictions on the Iranian nuclear project, an imperfect agreement is better than no agreement. They are wrong,” he stated.“That’s because Iran has already made considerable progress in its attempt to advance toward nuclear weapons. An agreement that allows Iran to continue circling in a holding pattern will resemble what happened with North Korea after the 2007 agreement left large parts of Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities intact, which enabled the North Koreans to produce several nuclear weapons in the following years,” warned Steinitz. “Under such conditions, nothing will stop Iran’s mullahs from landing, sooner or later, at their ultimate destination.”“Second, a flawed deal would hand Iran practical advantages in return for almost nothing. In return for an insignificant and temporary reduction of its enrichment capacities, Iran stands to reap $100 billion per year when the sanctions are lifted; gain formal legitimacy for its uranium enrichment activities; and, despite its history of nuclear fraud and concealment, preserve the capability to produce nuclear weapons at a time it deems appropriate,” he added.“Finally, a bad deal would pave the road to nuclear proliferation and herald the dawn of a nuclear arms race in the unstable Middle East. Other countries in the region will rush to build equivalent enrichment programs, which the international community will no longer be able to resist in good conscience, and which will drastically increase the risk of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of radical Islamists,” Steinitz warned.“This actually leaves the negotiators with only two real options at the moment: a bad deal, or no deal at all. Barring a surprising change in Iran’s negotiating stance, there is zero chance of reaching a satisfactory good deal before the November 24 deadline.”“Choosing the ‘no deal’ option will very likely produce extra pressure — including some new sanctions — on Iran and, subsequently, might pave the way for a better deal in the near future.”Steinitz’s warnings come as Iran and six world powers - the United States, France, Germany, China, Russia and Britain - aim to end a decade-old nuclear standoff by a self-imposed November 24 deadline. That deadline was set after the sides failed to reach an agreement by a previous deadline in July. The negotiations are centered on curbing Iran's atomic activity, which Tehran says is peaceful but the West fears may be aimed at developing a nuclear weapons capability, in exchange for lifting sanctions. With less than six weeks to go before the target date, Western officials said last week there are still important differences between the sides, especially over the future scope of Iran's production of enriched uranium, which can be used to fuel atomic energy plants but can also provide the fissile core of a bomb if purified to a high degree.Earlier this week, senior Iranian negotiator Abbas Araqchi said that nuclear talks with world powers could be extended again if no deal is reached by the November 24 deadline. However, an American official dismissed the possibility of talks being extended yet again after November, saying there were no talks now about extending the deadline.
Iran: We're Ready to Help Lebanon and Hezbollah-Iran declares its preparedness to provide aid to the Lebanese army as well to Hezbollah to help combat "terrorists".By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 10/20/2014, 6:45 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Iran said Sunday it is ready to provide aid to the Lebanese army as well as the Hezbollah group to help combat "terrorists", reports The Associated Press (AP).Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, was quoted by state TV as saying that "supporting the Lebanese nation, army and resistance will still remain on Iran's agenda.""Iran is ready to transfer its experience in order to improve security in Lebanon and the region, and to combat terrorists," he added, speaking during a meeting with visiting Lebanese Defense Minister Samir Moqbel.Moqbel also met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, noted AP.Iran is a main backer of Hezbollah, which is widely seen as being more powerful than the Lebanese army.Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehqan has said Tehran is ready to provide modern military equipment and strategic assistance to the Lebanese army to help it combat Sunni extremists.During a meeting with Moqbel on Saturday, Dehqan said such aid would have the aim of "consolidating national authority and reinforcing security in Lebanon," according to AP.Hezbollah, which is sworn to Israel's destruction, has recently had its attention and resources diverted to Syria, where it is helping to prop up the regime of Bashar Al-Assad against an array of Sunni rebel forces.Just recently fighting between Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda's Nusra Front left eight Hezbollah terrorists dead. The civil war in neighboring Syria has left Lebanon deeply divided, with Sunnis supporting the Sunni-led rebels and Hezbollah continuing to assist Assad's forces. In August the violence spilled across the border when Syrian Islamists briefly overran the border town of Arsal, killing and kidnapping several Lebanese soldiers and police.
Hamas: Israel Holding Bodies of Two of Our Members-Palestinian source tells Turkish news agency that Israel is holding the bodies of two Hamas members killed during Protective Edge.By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 10/20/2014, 2:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Hamas’s so-called “military wing”, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, is claiming that Israel is holding the bodies of two of its field commanders, the Turkish Anatolia news agency reported on Sunday, citing a Palestinian Arab source.According to the report, the two went missing during Israel’s self-defense Operation Protective Edge in Gaza last summer. After a thorough investigation, the brigades confirmed the death the two commanders, Bassil Abul Nagga and Ibrahim al-Ghamour, the source told the Turkish agency on condition of anonymity. He said Hamas also learned that the Israeli army had kept the remains of the two commanders until the present time. The source said that the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades was tipped off by one of its members in an Israeli jail that the two commanders were killed by the IDF in eastern Khan Younis.Hamas had reportedly searched for the remains of the two commanders ever since a long-term ceasefire went into effect on August 26, according to Anatolia.Hamas has not officially announced the death of the two commanders yet and there was no confirmation of the claims from any Israeli sources.Gaza terrorists are still holding the bodies of two IDF soldiers, Second Lt. Hadar Goldin and First Sgt. Oron Shaul, who were killed in Operation Protective Edge.Hamas has linked the release of the bodies of the two soldiers with Israel releasing hundreds of jailed terrorists. In fact, a Hamas official claimed last week that such a swap was imminent.
UN Envoy Meets Hezbollah Leader Who Called to Destroy Israel-Israel asked UN to disarm Hezbollah after attack on border last week - instead, UN envoy and coordinator chat with deputy chief.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 10/17/2014, 10:52 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Israel last Wednesday asked the UN to demand the disarmament of the Iran-proxy Hezbollah terror organization in Lebanon a day after it wounded IDF soldiers with two explosives set on the border - instead, this Thursday the UN sent an envoy to chat with the terror group's deputy leader.UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura was accompanied by UN special coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly on Thursday as he met Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, reports the Lebanese The Daily Star. The two then met with Sheikh Naim Qassem, second-in-command behind Hassan Nasrallah of the terror organization that has pledged to destroy Israel and launched numerous attacks to do so.Making the meeting the more astonishing is the fact that Hezbollah's "military wing" was added to the European Union's (EU) official terror list last July. After meeting Qassem in his Beirut office, de Mistura said his visit to the terror group was part of consultations with all parties to find a "political solution" to problems in the Middle East, particularly the internecine bloodshed in Syria where Hezbollah is helping to prop up President Bashar Assad's regime. The UN envoy said his viewpoint was identical with the terror group that a Syrian solution should be political - despite the fact that the group has been sending thousands of troops and is actively engaged in the bloody fighting."It has been confirmed that a political solution will save Syria and its people. Everyone must expect painful concessions in this respect. But it is the only solution at hand. There is no other solution," said Qassem.De Mistura also called for political unity in Lebanon while meeting with the terror group, saying "the Lebanese political environment should be stabilizing the sooner and the better."
Israel, "enemy of humanity"?
Meanwhile the Hezbollah deputy in May called Israel the "main enemy," adding "Israel is the enemy of humanity and truth. It cannot coexist with anyone," and promoting violent terrorism instead of political dialogue with the Jewish state. After claiming the attack last week, Qassem said his terror group is ready to fight Israel. The meeting comes as Hezbollah is expanding its influence, holding a clandestine meeting on Wednesday in Beirut with a senior Hamas official and vowing strong ties with the group. For the UN's part, the meeting comes amid a recent upsurge in anti-Israel rhetoric, with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon slamming "settlement activity" on Monday in Ramallah despite Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's covert building freeze against Jews.Ban also called for a return to peace talks on Tuesday while receiving an IDF tour of Hamas terror tunnels - even though Hamas has already restarted construction on the terror tunnels, and bragged that the IDF didn't destroy all of the tunnels, an assessment this week backed by an IDF commander.Regardless of that, and the fact that humanitarian materials were siphoned by Hamas to build the tunnels in the first place, Israel began transporting more construction materials into Gaza on Tuesday as a "humanitarian gesture," including 600 tons of cement, 50 truckloads of aggregate and 10 truckloads of steel.
Revealed: US Paid Suspected Nazis Even After they Left-Due to a legal loophole, dozens of suspected Nazi war criminals collected Social Security payments after being forced out of the US-By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 10/20/2014, 6:13 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Dozens of suspected Nazi war criminals and SS guards collected millions of dollars in Social Security payments after being forced out of the United States, an Associated Press (AP) investigation revealed Sunday has found.According to AP, the payments flowed through a legal loophole that has given the US Justice Department leverage to persuade Nazi suspects to leave. If they agreed to go, or simply fled before deportation, they could keep their Social Security, according to interviews and internal government records.Among those who benefited, the investigation found, are armed SS troops who guarded the Nazi network of camps where millions of Jews perished; an SS guard who took part in the brutal liquidation of the Warsaw ghetto that killed as many as 13,000 Jews; a Nazi collaborator who engineered the arrest and execution of thousands of Jews in Poland; and a German rocket scientist accused of using slave labor to build the V-2 rocket that pummeled London.AP's findings are the result of more than two years of interviews, research and analysis of records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and other sources. The Justice Department denied using Social Security payments as a tool for removing Nazi suspects, noted the news agency, but records show the US State Department and the Social Security Administration voiced grave concerns over the methods used by the Justice Department's Nazi-hunting unit, the Office of Special Investigations (OSI).State officials derogatorily called the practice "Nazi dumping" and claimed the OSI was bargaining with suspects so they would leave voluntarily.Since 1979, AP found, at least 38 of 66 suspects removed from the United States kept their Social Security benefits.Legislation that would have closed the Social Security loophole failed 15 years ago, partly due to opposition from the OSI. Since then, according to AP's analysis, at least 10 Nazi suspects kept their benefits after leaving. The Social Security Administration confirmed payments to seven who are deceased. One living suspect was confirmed through an AP interview. Two others met the conditions to keep their benefits.Of the 66 suspects, at least four are alive, living in Europe on US Social Security, according to the report. In newly uncovered Social Security Administration records, AP found that by March 1999, 28 suspected Nazi criminals had collected $1.5 million in Social Security payments after their removal from the U.S.Since then, AP estimates the amount paid out has reached into the millions. That estimate is based on the number of suspects who qualified and the three decades that have passed since the first former Nazis, Arthur Rudolph and John Avdzej, signed agreements that required them to leave the country but ensured their benefits would continue.Among those who benefited from this loophole, AP discovered, is Jakob Denzinger, against whom Croatian prosecutors opened a war crimes investigation last January, on suspicions he was a guard in several Nazi concentration camps during World War II.The Social Security Administration refused AP's request for the total number of Nazi suspects who received benefits and the dollar amounts of those payments.Spokesman William "BJ" Jarrett said the agency does not track data specific to Nazi cases. A further barrier, Jarrett said, is that there is no exception in US privacy law that "allows us to disclose information because the individual is a Nazi war criminal or an accused Nazi war criminal."The Justice Department declined AP's request for an official to speak on the record. Spokesman Peter Carr said in an emailed statement that Social Security payments never were used as an incentive or as a threat to persuade Nazi suspects to depart voluntarily. In recent months, Germany has begun a crackdown on former Nazi war criminals and made several arrests of suspected criminals. Some 220 others are still being investigated for possible charges but have not been located. The series of arrests comes following the 2011 Munich trial of John Demjanjuk, a Nazi war criminal charged of assisting in the murder of 28,060 people at the Sobibor death camp and sentenced to five years. He died in 2012.Germany said in May that some 20 former guards at the Majdanek death camp could face charges, following a widespread probe of the Nazi SS men and women who served there during World War II.
Simon Wiesenthal Center Urges to Prosecute Nazi 'Death Squads'-List of 80 suspects - participants in Nazi 'mobile killing sqauds' - handed to German authorities for prosecution.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 10/1/2014, 8:52 PM / Last Update: 10/1/2014, 9:04 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The Israeli branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center on Wednesday urged Germany to prosecute alleged members of Nazi death squads during World War II, giving it a list of 80 suspects, according to AFP. The Jewish rights group said the 76 men and four women whose names it provided to Germany's justice and interior ministries belonged to "mobile killing squads."All of the suspects were born between 1920 and 1924, it said, making them "alive and healthy enough to face prosecution." Efraim Zuroff, who heads the Los Angeles-based group's Jerusalem office, told AFP they believed two percent of "Nazi criminals" were still alive and that half of them could still be tried. The 80 people listed by the Center allegedly belonged to the Einsatzgruppen, special mobile death squads deployed mainly in occupied Poland and the former Soviet Union before the camps opened."The list was submitted in the hope of encouraging the German judicial authorities to expedite the efforts to bring these killers to justice and to offer the Center's assistance in this important project," Zuroff added.Since the Nuremberg Trials in 1945-1946, about 106,000 German or Nazi soldiers have been accused of war crimes. Some 13,000 have been found guilty and around half sentenced, according to the authority charged with investigating Nazi crimes.Since 2011, German prosecutors have been searching for death camp guards and death squad members, who can "now be brought to trial without proof that they had committed a specific crime against a specific victim," the Center said. The Simon Wiesenthal Center is named after the Holocaust survivor who was perhaps the best-known Nazi hunter until his death in 2005.
