"Israeli Shabbat" is happening parallel to the global initiative "The Shabbos Project" which hopes to bring together Jews worldwide to keep the Sabbath. "Israeli Shabbat" will feature main events such as city-wide dialogue circles, national conferences, community-wide Kabbalat Shabbat services, and hospitality provided by different types of communities in Israeli society, as well as meals hosted by Knesset members and celebrities. In addition, there will be smaller activities encouraging social solidarity and unity. Citizens are being encouraged to shop at community businesses in the South, lone soldiers are to be invited for Shabbat meals, in addition to many more. One of the most exciting aspects of the project is that religious and secular families will host each other for Friday night dinners fostering honest and productive discussion. These activities will be accompanied by a social media campaign. This campaign aims to grow a relationship of positivity and agreement between different sectors of Israeli society with different Shabbat experiences, showcasing that the state prioritizes building bridges between the religious and secular. In what may be a record, in a Bloomberg video interview this Tuesday, Intelligence and Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz repeated three times, in less than 8 minutes of the interview, that withdrawing from Judea and Samaria under today’s conditions would be “like committing suicide.”Steinitz focused on differentiating between the current Palestinian terrorist rocket risk from Gaza after Israel withdrew from there, and the risk that would be posed from Judea and Samaria if they were similarly abandoned.The effect of terrorist rocket attacks on sparsely inhabited areas around Gaza is extremely different from the effect that similar attacks from Judea and Samaria would have, he explained. South African Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein started a revolution last October when he introduced "Keeping it Together," a project to have Jews observe the Shabbat together, and received an unprecedented turnout of over 55,000 participants, many observing for the first time.This Shabbat, the rabbi is planning to take his project global, and he has the Jewish communities of 350 world cities in 35 countries who have already enthusiastically asked to take part.Arutz Sheva got a chance to speak with the rabbi at Tel Aviv's David Intercontinental Hotel this week ahead of the Shabbat, where Rabbi Goldstein explained about the project."The beauty is these communities are all taking responsibility and driving it and owning the project, and obviously from the center we are providing materials...that have been translated into eight languages," reveals the rabbi."People have been flooding in, they want to be part of it," he notes, saying that the driving force behind the will to take part is a "deep desire for Jewish unity."That unity was on display during Operation Protective Edge, the 50-day counter-terror operation in Gaza that began in July, and which the rabbi saw from up-close during a family visit to Israel.But as he notes, that unity was "forced on us by outside, by the hatred of others." In contrast, keeping the Shabbat together is "unity out of choice, out of love."The project enjoyed unbelievable success last October among South Africa's largely non-religious Jewish communities, where 3,000 women gathered to bake challah ahead of Shabbat, and thousands more took part in havdallah ceremonies at the conclusion of Shabbat on the streets of South Africa.

This upcoming Shabbat (Sabbath), October 24-25, Shabbat Noach, and the last before turning the clock, has been declared "Israeli Shabbat". "Israeli Shabbat" is a project focusing on positioning Shabbat as a day of culture and community for all sectors of Israeli society, by encouraging national and communal dialogue.The aim of the project is to formulate a cooperative agreement on the nature of Shabbat in the public sphere. "Israeli Shabbat" is happening parallel to the global initiative "The Shabbos Project" which hopes to bring together Jews worldwide to keep the Sabbath. "Israeli Shabbat" will feature main events such as city-wide dialogue circles, national conferences, community-wide Kabbalat Shabbat services, and hospitality provided by different types of communities in Israeli society, as well as meals hosted by Knesset members and celebrities. In addition, there will be smaller activities encouraging social solidarity and unity. Citizens are being encouraged to shop at community businesses in the South, lone soldiers are to be invited for Shabbat meals, in addition to many more. One of the most exciting aspects of the project is that religious and secular families will host each other for Friday night dinners fostering honest and productive discussion. These activities will be accompanied by a social media campaign. This campaign aims to grow a relationship of positivity and agreement between different sectors of Israeli society with different Shabbat experiences, showcasing that the state prioritizes building bridges between the religious and secular. Partnership organizations for "Israeli Shabbat", including Beit Hillel, HaMidrasha at Oranim, Israel Democracy Institute, the BINA Secular Yeshiva, and many others, are working together to empower such concepts of unity, family, community and social solidarity around Shabbat.Many Israeli public officials are expected to attend this year and the project has received the blessing of President Reuven Rivlin.
