Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations to Resume Next Week-Hamas says Israeli and Palestinian Arab negotiators are to resume talks on a durable Gaza ceasefire next week in Cairo.By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 10/21/2014, 3:16 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Israeli and Palestinian Arab negotiators are to resume talks on a durable Gaza ceasefire next week in Cairo, a senior official in Hamas said Monday, according to AFP."Hamas and the Palestinian factions will take part in a session of indirect negotiations with the occupation (Israel) on the 27th of this month at the invitation of Egypt," said Hamas deputy leader Mousa Abu Marzouk. He said on the movement's Al-Ray website that the Palestinians would from the outset demand the opening of a Gaza port and reopening of the territory's airport.A source close to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, contacted by AFP, gave no comment on the reported resumption of talks, but Army Radio quoted unnamed officials who confirmed the report. The two sides last month held their first Egyptian-mediated negotiations since the end in August of Operation Protective Edge in Gaza. The talks are meant to discuss some unresolved issues, specifically Israel’s demand that Gaza be demilitarized and Hamas’s demands for an airport and a seaport in Gaza.Hamas has repeatedly declared that it would reject any attempts to disarm the terrorist groups in Gaza, while Israel has outright rejected Hamas’s demands for an airport and seaport. While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu originally conditioned the rehabilitation of Gaza on its disarmament, the issue did not come up at an international donors’ conference on rebuilding Gaza, which was held last week in Cairo.Israeli officials admitted that in reality, the rehabilitation of Gaza was not contingent upon its demilitarization but only on a ceasefire, adding that Israel will demand the demilitarization in return for the continued development of the coastal enclave.Despite the ceasefire, reports have revealed that Hamas and Islamic Jihad have already started rebuilding the terror tunnels. Video evidence shows that the renewed digging of the tunnels started even minutes after the ceasefire.
Ya'alon: No Gaza Rehabilitation if Hamas Rebuilds Tunnels-Meeting with UN chief, Defense Minister makes clear that Israel will stop Gaza's rehabilitation process if Hamas keeps building tunnels.-By Hezki Ezra-First Publish: 10/21/2014, 4:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon made clear on Monday that if Hamas rebuilds the terror tunnels, Israel will stop the rehabilitation process of Gaza.Ya’alon, who is visiting the United States, made the comments during a meeting with United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at UN headquarters in New York."We want the people of Gaza to live in dignity and prosperity, to rebuild their homes and return to normal life. But we're very concerned. Yesterday, Hamas officials stated they plan to renovate the tunnels, and that’s instead of renovating the homes of Gazans,” Ya’alon told Ban."If this is the case, we cannot allow rehabilitation materials to enter Gaza," he clarified. "We also will not agree that Hamas will arm itself again. We have an interest that the people of Gaza will improve their financial situation and their lives, but it must be clear that the money and the equipment do not go towards terrorism, which is why we are closely watching the developments.”Referring to claims that Israel deliberately hurt civilians and caused damage to property in Gaza, Ya’alon told the UN chief, "When you have to fight for 51 days to protect your citizens, and when Hamas uses civilians as human shields by concealing weapons in populated areas, the result is the severe blow we dealt [to Gaza]. We did not enjoy harming Gaza but we had to protect our citizens.”Ya’alon noted that the IDF is holding an independent inquiry into some incidents that occurred during the fighting in Gaza, but noted, “We have a very bad experience with the Palestinians, which includes a lot of false evidence, and we cannot rely on what is said by them. There were cases where we were accused of attacking civilian areas, and it was ultimately discovered that it was Hamas or Islamic Jihad who fired [at these areas].”The Defense Minister made clear to Ban that he "longs" for peace with the Palestinians, "particularly in light of my experiences of war. But we have an experience of two decades in which we failed. The talks with the Palestinians should go bottom-up. We should promote cooperation with them on matters related to economy, security, law and order and other areas, since we want the residents of the Palestinian Authority to have comfortable lives.”“Only then will it be possible to advance the diplomatic track. But [PA Chairman] Abbas prefers to promote unilateral steps to delegitimize Israel and act against us in international institutions, instead of sitting down with us to try and promote moves,” said Ya’alon.
World Ignores as Hamas Boasts of Continued Tunnel-Digging-As world donates billions, Hamas journal reports from inside a terror tunnel destroyed during operation but currently being rebuilt.By Hillel Fendel-First Publish: 10/20/2014, 7:25 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The destruction of the widespread Hamas tunnel network was considered a major Israeli achievement of the recent war in Gaza, but the Hamas weekly newspaper Al-Risalah reports that Hamas continues digging tunnels from Gaza into Israel.A reporter for Al-Risalah claims to have visited an “offensive tunnel” – a term referring to an underground conduit planned to be used in an attack against Israel. Hamas has attacked Israel via tunnels of this nature in the past, either by sending armed terrorists into Israel to target Israelis, or – as in the famous case of Gilad Shalit - by capturing a soldier nearby and abducting him into Gaza. The tunnel purportedly visited by the reporter was destroyed by Israel during the recent war, but is now apparently being restored by Hamas, dozens of meters underground. The Al-Risalah report confirms other evidence that Israel's successful detection and destruction of terrorist tunnels during Operation Protective Edge is on the brink of coming undone. Last month, for instance, Hamas confirmed that one of its members was killed while helping to dig a tunnel. The IDF discovered and destroyed at least 34 terrorist tunnels during Protective Edge; others are assumed to have survived the war.In the space of five days in July, Hamas terrorist groups entered Israel via three different tunnels, killing six IDF soldiers before they themselves were liquidated. The recent revelation comes after a senior IDF commander of the Gaza Division engineering unit last week assessed that not all Hamas terror tunnels were destroyed, confirming earlier Hamas statements which bragged that not all of the group's tunnels were destroyed. Regardless of that, and the fact that humanitarian materials were siphoned by Hamas to build the tunnels in the first place, Israel began transporting more construction materials into Gaza last Tuesday as a "humanitarian gesture," including 600 tons of cement, 50 truckloads of aggregate and 10 truckloads of steel. The world has likewise turned a blind-eye to the overwhelming evidence of renewed tunnel construction, with world states last Sunday pledging $5.4 billion for Gaza at a Cairo donor conference.
IDF Commander Says Hamas Terror Tunnels Still Remain-IDF Gaza Division commander reveals IDF was caught off guard by number of attack tunnels into Israel; political echelon delayed action.-By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 10/16/2014, 8:22 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
A senior IDF commander responsible for the Gaza region has revealed that the IDF was caught off guard by the number of Hamas terror tunnels leading into Israel - and warns that there likely are more tunnels remaining, ready for use in attacks. An engineering unit captain in the Gaza Division identified only as Lt. Col. Max held an interview with the Hebrew-language Walla! news site, in which he detailed his experiences locating and destroying the tunnels during Operation Protective Edge.Speaking about the tunnel threat and whether the IDF was caught off guard, Max said "in the two years that I was close to the matter there wasn't a single person, up to the most senior political echelon, who did not have the issue presented to him in the most detailed manner.""I think the only surprise that you can really count is how many of the tunnels that we found crossed the border," the colonel admitted in the interview, which was published on Thursday. "Most of the surprise was not the method in which the tunnels were built (such as size and complexity - ed.), but rather how many of them went over the border."When asked whether any so-called "terror tunnels" from Gaza into Israel remained, Max claimed: "I think that it's correct to assume there are. If we don't do that we'll find ourselves in some kind of illusion that will freeze our development in different advancements. There's also the possibility that some of them (the tunnels) are ready for an attack. I think we must not rule that out."The assessment comes after Hamas bragged recently that the IDF didn't destroy all of its tunnels during Operation Protective Edge. The terror group, along with Islamic Jihad, have already been revealed to have restarted construction on the terror tunnels since the August ceasefire that ended the operation.Regardless of that, and the fact that humanitarian materials were siphoned by Hamas to build the tunnels in the first place, Israel began transporting more construction materials into Gaza on Tuesday as a "humanitarian gesture," including 600 tons of cement, 50 truckloads of aggregate and 10 truckloads of steel.More than 30 terror tunnels into Israel were located and destroyed by the IDF during Operation Protective Edge.
Political echelon decided not to deal with the tunnels
Even prior to the summer war with Gazan terrorists, Lt. Col. Max was well-acquainted with the tunnel threat: last October he was one of five soldiers wounded as Hamas terrorists detonated an explosive in a tunnel leading to an Israeli kibbutz soldiers were working to destroy. In fact, Max was commander of the operation to destroy the tunnel; the blast burned his face and left him in critical condition, unable to open his eyes."The moment of the explosion was a feeling of a big miss from my point of view," he recalled. "I felt like they scored a goal against us. We prepared for it, we constructed drills that were supposed to provide an answer to it, and they still succeeded in hitting us."In fact, Max's acquaintance with the tunnels goes back further still, to 2007, when there was not much IDF intelligence on them or awareness of the threat among the general public. At the time he was the commander of the Samur company of Sayeret Yahalom, a special ops engineering unit.Despite the knowledge by military heads of the tunnels' existence way back in 2007, the political echelon decided to ignore the issue and not deal with the tunnels both in 2008 Operation Cast Lead and 2012 Operation Pillar of Defense, he said.In the interim, and prior to the most recent operation, not only did the tunnel incident in which Max was wounded occur, but another "advanced" tunnel was located this March."When you see the concrete reinforced structure and take in the ability to bring in large forces through it (the tunnel), you understand that we 'grew up' from smuggling tunnels to attack tunnels of a scale that can bring about a mega terror attack," said Lt. Col. Max.While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu controversially agreed to a ceasefire with Hamas (which the latter rejected) on July 15, early on in the operation and before the tunnels were revealed or destroyed, Max claims the IDF was intent on destroying the tunnels during the recent mission."After (2012's) Operation Pillar of Defense there was a clear decision that the next operation should include the tunnels," said Max. "The scope wasn't talked about, but there was an understanding that anywhere the IDF conducts maneuvers, emphasis will be placed on dealing with the attack tunnels.""We developed around that (goal) techniques and drills, and in Protective Edge, when the decision was made to deal with the tunnels, we stuck to everything to make it pay off," said the commander.Shortly after the operation, Max was named as head of the engineering branch of the center for ground drills in Tze'elim. He revealed there are several projects currently in development to deal with the tunnel threat, many of which were temporarily postponed during the operation but are not moving ahead.Speaking about the danger moving forward, Max said: "my professional estimation is that the quantity (of tunnels) dealt with and the wide damage dealt will postpone any terror tunnels being carried out for a period, but if we don't take dramatic steps, like creating a physical blockade supported by relevant technologies, we won't return the quiet to the Gaza region."
Syria Tunnel Blast Proves Hezbollah Terror Tunnel Threat-Rebels obliterate army post and 60 soldiers using UN equipment and digging in rocky terrain - similar to that of Israel-Lebanese border.By Dalit Halevy, Ari Yashar-First Publish: 10/17/2014, 2:57 PM- ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS
Members of the Syrian rebel group Ahrar al-Sham, part of the Islamic Front coalition, blew up a Syrian army post on Tuesday by digging attack tunnels in rocky terrain - similar to that of the Israeli-Lebanese border - in an incident further raising fears that Hezbollah may use the same techniques.Al Jazeera Arabic reported on the blast and the tunnels on Wednesday, showing how the strike was conducted on the Al Dahrouj checkpoint near Maarat al-Numaan, in the rural northern Syrian region not far from Idlib. In the video, the rebels who identify ideologically with Al Qaeda are seen pulling off a massive explosion that shoots high into the air, obliterating the checkpoint and killing over 60 Syrian soldiers and captains. The fighters are seen preparing the tunnel with drills before placing the explosives, in a digging process that according to the report took around 120 days.Like Hamas in Gaza, which used UNRWA facilities to store rockets on at least three occasions and killed three IDF soldiers with a booby-trapped UNRWA clinic, the Syrian rebels were also seen to be using UN equipment in the video. The equipment from the UN refugee agency UNHCR can be seen in the tunnel, including large plastic bags emblazoned with the UN organization's logo.Syrian rebels similar used tunnels to blow up the Wadi al-Deif checkpoint in May, using 40 tons of explosives and killing at least 30 soldiers.
Hezbollah may be doing the same?
As noted above, the rocky terrain is similar to that on the Lebanese border with Israel, strengthening concerns raised by Israeli residents of the north who have reported hearing the sounds of tunneling and suspicious evidence of such activities on the Lebanese side of the border. The Iran-proxy terror group Hezbollah has already launched numerous attacks on Israel from that space, including an attack last Tuesday with two explosives on the border that wounded IDF soldiers. Security sources warned Israel may be in danger of "losing control" of the Lebanese border.Several senior IDF officers raised concerns about possible terror tunnels; the IDF has refused to acknowledge those concerns publicly, instead launching a private investigation into the issue. While Israel last Wednesday asked the UN to demand the disarmament of Hezbollah following the explosive attack, instead, this Thursday the UN sent an envoy to meet with the terror group's deputy leader.Hezbollah also held a clandestine meeting with a senior Hamas terrorist leader on Wednesday in Beirut, pledging cooperation and strong ties.
Terrorists Attack Jerusalem Home with Firebombs-Terror wave in and around the capital continues, as Arabs throw firebombs towards a home in the Shiloach neighborhood.By Ido Ben Porat-First Publish: 10/21/2014, 12:13 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The terrorism wave in Jerusalem and the vicinity continued on Monday evening, as Arabs threw firebombs towards “Beit Ovadia”, a home in the Shiloach (known as Silwan by local Arabs) neighborhood, near Ir David (City of David).Miraculously, there were no injuries among the residents of the house, who moved in just one day earlier after purchasing it with the assistance of Ateret Cohanim. Border Police officers at the scene dispersed the Arab attackers using crowd dispersal means. In a separate attack, a bus driver sustained minor injuries from broken glass after Arabs threw rocks towards his bus near the Naomi Shemer tunnel in Jerusalem, which leads to Maaleh Adumim. The driver was taken for treatment at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.Earlier Monday evening, Arabs from the village of Dura al-Kara in Binyamin infiltrated into the Jewish town of Beit El, and threw two firebombs at a home. There were no injuries. The use of firebombs has been reported in numerous recent incidents. Rock throwing and firebomb attacks have increased at light rail stops in Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem. Firebombs were also thrown at police in recent riots on the Temple Mount.
