Two people are dead after dramatic series of events in Ottawa Wednesday — and it appears that the man who unleashed them was a recent convert to Islam.A Canadian soldier was shot to death by someone who is described as dressed all in black with a kerchief over his face. CBS is reporting Zehaf-Bibeau was born Michael Joseph Hall, and occasionally dropped the name Michael and went by the name Abdul Zehar Bibeau — and at other times he would drop the Abdul.He was apparently a recent convert to Islam — and reports suggest he was considered a high-risk traveller and had his passport revoked.He was also known to police in Montreal and in Vancouver."It's way too early to be able to determine a motive,'' Gilles Michaud, the assistant commissioner of the RCMP, said at a news conference in Ottawa while police were still clearing downtown buildings Wednesday afternoon.The soldier who was shot and killed at the National War Memorial has also been identified as 24-year-old Cpl. Nathan Cirillo from Hamilton, who's being described as a reservist, an animal lover and a fitness fanatic.Cpl. OTTAWA (Reuters) - A gunman shot and fatally wounded a soldier in Ottawa on Wednesday and then entered the country's parliament buildings chased by police, with at least 30 shots fired in dramatic scenes in the heart of the Canadian capital.A suspected gunman was shot dead inside the parliament building, a government minister said.Ottawa police were searching for more suspects near the National War Memorial in central Ottawa, where the soldier was shot, and on nearby Parliament Hill, a police spokesman said.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in a caucus meeting in parliament when gunfire erupted in the building, Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino, a former policeman, told the Toronto Sun.Harper was later safely removed from the building, and parliament was locked down.Fantino said parliament's head of security, Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers, a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), had shot a suspect dead."All the details are not in, but the sergeant-at-arms, a former Mountie, is the one that engaged the gunman, or one of them at least, and stopped this," Fantino said. Chaos has broken out in downtown Ottawa and a Canadian soldier wounded following a series of shootings on and around Parliament Hill.The mayhem started when a uniformed soldier standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was shot and wounded by an assailant who is believed to have hopped out of a Toyota Corolla. CPR was performed on the soldier and he has been transported to hospital by ambulance. CBC reports that the soldier is a reservist who is serving in Hamilton from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada.Gunfire later broke out inside Parliament Hill's Centre Block, where one gunman was confirmed killed, reportedly by House of Commons Sgt.-at-Arms Kevin Vickers. However, police say there are "numerous" shooters involved. A reporter with the Globe and Mail captured the moment in this gripping video:The shooting then continued near Rideau Centre Mall, a shopping centre near Parliament Hill. Two people are dead after dramatic series of events in Ottawa Wednesday — and it appears that the man who unleashed them was a recent convert to Islam.A Canadian soldier was shot to death by someone who is described as dressed all in black with a kerchief over his face. He was said to have raised his arms in triumph after the Wednesday morning shooting.The shooter being identified as 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who once lived in Montreal. CBS is reporting Zehaf-Bibeau was born Michael Joseph Hall, and occasionally dropped the name Michael and went by the name Abdul Zehar Bibeau — and at other times he would drop the Abdul.He was apparently a recent convert to Islam — and reports suggest he was considered a high-risk traveller and had his passport revoked.He was also known to police in Montreal and in Vancouver."It's way too early to be able to determine a motive,'' Gilles Michaud, the assistant commissioner of the RCMP, said at a news conference in Ottawa while police were still clearing downtown buildings Wednesday afternoon.The soldier who was shot and killed at the National War Memorial has also been identified as 24-year-old Cpl. Nathan Cirillo from Hamilton, who's being described as a reservist, an animal lover and a fitness fanatic.Cpl. Cirillo was a member of the Hamilton’s Argylls of Canada — 91st Canadian Highlanders.A Facebook page has been set up in his memory.The incident comes just two days after two Canadian soldiers were run over — and one of them killed — in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu by a man with jihadist sympathies.25-year-old Martin Couture-Rouleau was also under government surveillance, and had his passport revoked.
He was also a recent convert to Islam, and expressed his jihadist convictions on social media.

Cirillo being gunned down at the War Memorial from his fourth-floor office window directly above the monument, just before 10 a.m. Wednesday."I looked out the window and saw a shooter — a man dressed all in black with a kerchief over his nose and mouth and something over his head as well — holding a rifle and shooting an honour guard in front of the Cenotaph, point blank, twice,'' Zobl told The Canadian Press."It looked like the honour guard was trying to reach for the barrel of the gun,'' he continued. "The honour guard dropped to the ground and the shooter kind of raised his arms in triumph holding the rifle.''Zobl said the shooter then ran up the street toward Parliament Hill.It was only earlier this year that the government extended the season for live guards at the monument through the November Remembrance Day ceremonies. The scene on Parliament Hill was frantic.
Wednesday morning is the busiest day of the week on the Hill, with MPs and senators of all major parties gathering in the Centre Block for meetings.Given the time and day, it was remarkable only four persons were admitted to hospital. One was Cirillo, and the other three are all in stable condition, expected to be released within 24 hours. Only one had a gunshot wound.Witnesses and video suggest a hail of gunfire erupted in the marbled Hall of Honour that bisects the building directly beneath the Peace Tower.Kevin Vickers, better known to political wonks as the ceremonially garbed sergeant-at-arms carrying the mace to open the Commons each day, was reported by multiple sources as the person who shot the gunman.Construction worker Scott Walsh said he was in a manhole near the East Block building, between the memorial and the Centre Block, when he heard two gunshots echo down the street.In the ensuing panic, people around him started screaming, including a woman pushing a child in a stroller.He said she started to run, so he went to help her.That's when he saw a man with long black hair, his face covered by a white scarf with decals on it and wearing a black jacket."He had a double-barrelled shotgun, he was about five feet from me, and he ran right beside us, ran past the woman with the stroller and child,'' he said.The gunman then hijacked a car at gunpoint, he said, and drove it up towards the Peace Tower.Greta Levy, a press secretary for the NDP, said she had just left the building when she saw the gunman walk up the paved ramp under the tower.

More shots were fired, presumably some by law enforcement.The police have confirmed that the gunman was killed inside the Parliament building.The attack took place just one day after Canada’s federal government raised its internal threat level, citing an increase in “general chatter from radical Islamist organizations”.Earlier this week, a man in Quebec drove a car into two soldiers. OTTAWA (Reuters) - A gunman shot and fatally wounded a soldier in Ottawa on Wednesday and then entered the country's parliament buildings chased by police, with at least 30 shots fired in dramatic scenes in the heart of the Canadian capital.A suspected gunman was shot dead inside the parliament building, a government minister said.Ottawa police were searching for more suspects near the National War Memorial in central Ottawa, where the soldier was shot, and on nearby Parliament Hill, a police spokesman said.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in a caucus meeting in parliament when gunfire erupted in the building, Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino, a former policeman, told the Toronto Sun.Harper was later safely removed from the building, and parliament was locked down.Fantino said parliament's head of security, Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers, a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), had shot a suspect dead."All the details are not in, but the sergeant-at-arms, a former Mountie, is the one that engaged the gunman, or one of them at least, and stopped this," Fantino said. "He did a great job and, from what I know, shot the gunman and he is now deceased."Canadian cabinet minister Jason Kenney said the soldier who was shot at the war memorial had died. He said a guard in parliament buildings had been wounded."Condolences to family of the soldier killed, and prayers for the parliamentary guard wounded. As the drama unfolded, police in dark bulletproof vests and carrying automatic rifles flooded the streets near parliament.Some took cover behind vehicles and shouted to people to clear the area, saying: "We do not have the suspect in custody. You are in danger here."Police quickly cleared several blocks of downtown Ottawa. By noon ET, the streets were empty.Several police cars were parked on the lawns outside the parliament buildings. Small groups of police could be seen sheltering behind at least two cars.Members of parliament were told to lock themselves in their offices, and stay away from the windows."If your door does not lock, find a way to barricade the door, if possible. Do not open a door under any circumstances," said a security alert issued by parliament officials.At the time of the shooting the opposition New Democrats were holding their weekly caucus meeting in parliament's Centre Block, where the shooting took place. A tweeted picture sent from the room showed a pile of chairs jammed up against the main door to prevent anyone from entering.Police told people in downtown Ottawa to stay away from windows and off roofs.The soldier who was reported to have died in the shooting was taken into an ambulance in which medical personnel could be seen giving him cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. CBC News reported that he was a reservist who had been serving in Hamilton, Ontario.There was no word yet on the identity of any suspect or suspects or of any motive for the shooting.The incident came just two days after an Islamic convert ran down two Canadian soldiers with his car, killing one, near Montreal, before being shot and killed by police.It also took place as the Canadian government prepared to boost the powers of its spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Chaos has broken out in downtown Ottawa and a Canadian soldier wounded following a series of shootings on and around Parliament Hill.The mayhem started when a uniformed soldier standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was shot and wounded by an assailant who is believed to have hopped out of a Toyota Corolla. CPR was performed on the soldier and he has been transported to hospital by ambulance. CBC reports that the soldier is a reservist who is serving in Hamilton from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada.Gunfire later broke out inside Parliament Hill's Centre Block, where one gunman was confirmed killed, reportedly by House of Commons Sgt.-at-Arms Kevin Vickers. However, police say there are "numerous" shooters involved. A reporter with the Globe and Mail captured the moment in this gripping video:The shooting then continued near Rideau Centre Mall, a shopping centre near Parliament Hill. CBC reports that all military bases in Canada are currently on heightened security, in the interest of the safety of the men and women working at them. Buildings throughout Ottawa's downtown core are also under lockdown.Reuters is reporting that an Ottawa hospital is treating three patients, two in stable condition. Their identities are not yet known.Prime Minister Stephen Harper is safe and off Parliament Hill. He has cancelled a planned Toronto meeting with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who was to be named an honourary Canadian citizen. Harper will make a statement on the attack later today.
