Washington (AFP) - The US-led air war against Islamic State extremists targeted oil refineries in eastern Syria on Wednesday, in a bid to undercut the group's oil smuggling profits, the Pentagon said.
Warplanes from the United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates bombed the oil installations in the latest round of air raids in Syria, the Pentagon said.Washington expanded its anti-IS air campaign from Iraq into Syria this week, and Wednesday's strikes focused on 12 targets in the east where the IS group controls "small-scale" refineries, the US military's Central Command said in a statement.A total of 13 air strikes were carried out against the oil refineries and a vehicle, and the initial signs indicated "the strikes were successful.""These small-scale refineries provided fuel to run ISIL operations, money to finance their continued attacks throughout Iraq and Syria, and an economic asset to support their future operations," Central Command said in a statement.The oil installations produce between 300 to 500 barrels of "refined petroleum per day," and the destruction of the refineries further limits the IS group's "ability to lead, control, project power and conduct operations."The Pentagon said Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates played a prominent role in the attack, without providing details.The targets "were struck with precision-guided missiles by coalition aircraft. Islamist militants in Algeria boasted in a video they had beheaded a French hostage captured on Sunday to punish Paris for joining air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq. "The military air strikes will continue as long as necessary."The United States said it was still assessing whether Mohsin al-Fadhli, a senior figure in the al Qaeda-linked group Khorasan, had been killed in a U.S. strike in Syria.A U.S. official earlier said Fadhli, an associate of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, was thought to have been killed in the first day of strikes on Syria. Even as Islamic State outposts elsewhere have been struck, the fighters have accelerated their campaign to capture Kobani, a Kurdish city on the border with Turkey. Nearly 140,000 Syrian Kurds have fled into Turkey since last week, the fastest exodus of the entire three-year civil war.An Islamic State source, speaking to Reuters via online messaging, said the group had taken several villages to the west of Kobani. Footage posted on YouTube appeared to show Islamic State fighters using weapons including artillery as they battled Kurdish forces near Kobani. Washington (AFP) - The US-led air war against Islamic State extremists targeted oil refineries in eastern Syria on Wednesday, in a bid to undercut the group's oil smuggling profits, the Pentagon said.
Warplanes from the United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates bombed the oil installations in the latest round of air raids in Syria, the Pentagon said.Washington expanded its anti-IS air campaign from Iraq into Syria this week, and Wednesday's strikes focused on 12 targets in the east where the IS group controls "small-scale" refineries, the US military's Central Command said in a statement.A total of 13 air strikes were carried out against the oil refineries and a vehicle, and the initial signs indicated "the strikes were successful.""These small-scale refineries provided fuel to run ISIL operations, money to finance their continued attacks throughout Iraq and Syria, and an economic asset to support their future operations," Central Command said in a statement.The oil installations produce between 300 to 500 barrels of "refined petroleum per day," and the destruction of the refineries further limits the IS group's "ability to lead, control, project power and conduct operations."The Pentagon said Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates played a prominent role in the attack, without providing details.The targets "were struck with precision-guided missiles by coalition aircraft. Islamist militants in Algeria boasted in a video they had beheaded a French hostage captured on Sunday to punish Paris for joining air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq. French President Francois Hollande confirmed the execution."My determination is total and this aggression only strengthens it," Hollande said. "The military air strikes will continue as long as necessary."The United States said it was still assessing whether Mohsin al-Fadhli, a senior figure in the al Qaeda-linked group Khorasan, had been killed in a U.S. strike in Syria.A U.S. official earlier said Fadhli, an associate of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, was thought to have been killed in the first day of strikes on Syria. The Pentagon said any confirmation could take time.Washington describes Khorasan as a separate group from Islamic State, made up of al Qaeda veterans planning attacks on the West from a base in Syria.As Obama tried in meetings in New York to widen his coalition, Belgium said it was likely to contribute warplanes in the coming days, and the Netherlands said it would deploy six F-16s to support U.S.-led strikes.The initial days of U.S. strikes suggest one aim is to hamper Islamic State's ability to operate across the Iraqi-Syrian frontier. The campaign has blurred the traditional lines of Middle East alliances, pitting a U.S. coalition comprising countries opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against fighters that form the most powerful opposition to Assad on the ground.The attacks have so far encountered no objection, and even signs of approval, from Assad's Syrian government. Even as Islamic State outposts elsewhere have been struck, the fighters have accelerated their campaign to capture Kobani, a Kurdish city on the border with Turkey. Nearly 140,000 Syrian Kurds have fled into Turkey since last week, the fastest exodus of the entire three-year civil war.An Islamic State source, speaking to Reuters via online messaging, said the group had taken several villages to the west of Kobani. Footage posted on YouTube appeared to show Islamic State fighters using weapons including artillery as they battled Kurdish forces near Kobani. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said leaders must find and nurture "seeds of hope" in the turmoil and despair of a world that may seem like it's falling apart with people crying out for protection from greed and inequality."Not since the end of the Second World War have there been so many refugees, displace people and asylum seekers. Never before has the United Nations been asked to reach so many people with emergency food assistance and other life-saving supplies," Ban said in his state of the world address at the opening of the U.N. General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting.Several leaders including Jordan's King Abdullah and Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the challenges — financial and social — of hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria.Abdullah, whose country is sheltering nearly 1.4 million Syrians, said the refugee crisis "demands a global solution.""To date, the response has not kept pace with the real needs," he said.The global spotlight at the assembly is focused on the rise of radical Islamic extremists, who chose Wednesday to behead a French hiker in Algeria.
